Each of the questions I'm answering could be a whole episode on it's own, (and where I've done a deeper dive on this already, I'll pop a link in to these notes directing you to the relevant episode), but I wanted to give you some tips in this show, so that you can get going on improving your speaking and increasing your impact for better results in the coming year. What you'll discover: How you can be more authentic. How you can press your audience's buttons more. How you can be more coherent and articulate. Sometimes you have to escape the nest in order to learn how to flap your wings, if you know what I mean. In this episode, Margot Leitman escapes her parents' gaze—they'd rather focus on each other—to Puerto Rico, where a handsome man in a lavender shirt awaits her. Storyteller Mike O'Connell, on the other hand, completely fails to escape the nest. Plus, Dan tells the story of the time he tried to escape to San Francisco but, unfortunately, couldn't get off (the bus). This episode of Hot Mic with Dan Savage features "The Not So Virgin Islands" by Margot Leitman told live at Don't Tell My Mother and "Anti Custody" by Mike O'Connell for Dirty Birdie Story Hour. In each episode of Hot Mic with Dan Savage, relationship expert and columnist Dan Savage showcases and provides commentary on the best true stories about sex and relationships from live storytelling shows across the country.
The key to growing a YouTube channel and engaging an audience is to be able to tell stories that capture people's attention. Yes, metadata, YouTube SEO, titles, tags, descriptions, thumbnails, captions, etc., are all important, but none of those things actually make people want to keep watching your videos. Growing your channel's watch time really comes down to storytelling, and how you tell those stories visually on-screen. I've been learning a lot about how to tell stories better, which led me to Margot Leitman and her book, "Long Story Short." I read it and found it to be very helpful, so I brought her on the show to share some of her insights with you so can you can learn to tell better stories on your YouTube channel and better engage your viewers. Our cohost today is mom to a 2.5 yr. old, storyteller extraordinaire and author of "Gawky" and soon-to-be released "Long Story Short" MARGOT LEITMAN! We discuss the challenges of sleep troubles plus our good/bad/funnies (including a super funny about toddler love as well as a train debacle) before giving our unqualified advice to listener questions about how to help parents with their parenting issues when you are the nanny, and how to explain death to a child in a way that they understand at the age of 4. Enjoy!

Margot Leitman, amazing author and storyteller joins us to share a story about growing up awkward, gawky and on vacation in the Bahamas. All of this, through a John Hughes filter. We had a great show in Chicago last week, helped IMPACT and entertained our friends in the windy city! Thanks to IMPACT, Northwestern and The Laugh Factory!
The December show was stellar with standing room only and a crackling energy in Rafa's Lounge! Aaron Gilmartin started the night off with original songs on Flamenco Guitar and continued to accompany the letters with Flamenco, banjo and ukulele.Marlene Nichols read a saucy letter from her 80 year old self to her present day self with advice we can all take to heart.Lisa Waugh and Chris Sheets transported us to Alabama and the hardships endured by her Uncle Lee who grew up poor amidst fifteen siblings. A theatrical first at To Whom It May Concern as Chris played the part of Uncle Lee and spun a tale of drinking, fighting, thieving and redemption.Drew Droege improvised a letter based on the audience suggestion of a scarlet letter. As usual he was loose, witty and hilarious.Margot Leitman proved why she is a five time Moth winner with letters of a high school crush gone horribly wrong. To Whom It May Concern's producer, Jayne Entwistle, read a letter to none other than Santa Claus or, as is more accurate for her British upbringing, Father Christmas.
Comedian MARGOT LEITMAN's critically acclaimed memoir “Gawky, Tales of an Extra Long Awkward Phase" reveals why she was born to tell stories and perform. We talked about why storytelling rocks, stand up blows, how to quit a temp job, and win money (and a Prius) instead. www.margotleitman.com CATIE LAZARUS is the host of Employee of the Month Show. Gawky: Tales of an Extra Long Awkward Phase
Perennial Moth Grandslam winner and hilarious storyteller/writer Margot Leitman comes in for this latest episode in This Better Be Funny's Despicable Edition mini-series to challenge co-host Jeremy Paul in who has the more embarrassing, shameful, or despicable story for the prize of cassette tapes. Margot's had a story which could be the seed that started a brand new world regime and Jeremy's story is so shrouded in secrecy as we've never knew that he knew sleazy winemakers. Listen to both stories and see which one host Jake Kroeger (a man who admitted that the closest he would get to going to a strip club is watching an Air Sex Competition) will pick as the aforementioned most shameful, embarrassing, or despicable.
Gawky: Tales of an Extra Long Awkward Phase (Seal Press) Some tall girls grow up to have perfect posture and are later seen gracing the pages of magazines. Some are natural athletes with toned legs that mask their overlarge feet. Then there are "other" tall girls: the ones who are always tripping over themselves; who never look normal in any size of clothing; who literally don't fit in. Comedian Margot Leitman was one of these awkward giants, and "Gawky" is the painfully funny chronicle of her experiences growing up tall. Reaching five feet six inches in fourth grade--and approaching six feet in high school--Leitman realized early on that she'd always stand out from the crowd. To cope, she developed a thick skin and a sharp sense of humor, and instead of forever trying to blend in, she decided to embrace her center-of-attention status. Leitman wears funky, Ziggy Stardust-era jumpsuits (in the 90s); takes up any cause she can find (whether saving the public beaches or protesting prom); and generally makes as much use of her big presence as humanly possible. Leitman's memoir is a hilarious celebration of growing up gangly. Endearing and encouraging, "Gawky" is a cathartic release of everything awkward girls endure--and a tribute to a youth larger than life. "If Judy Blume and Chelsea Handler had a baby, and that baby was a book, it would be "Gawky.""--Rachel Dratch Margot Leitman's humorous, autobiographical writing has been published in Playgirl Magazine and The NY Press, as well as online at LifetimeTV.com, theFrisky.com, CollegeHumor.com, and 236.com (the comedy division of the Huffington Post). Her former monthly column, “From Behind the Bar,” was a reminiscence of bartending at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre and was featured multiple times on Comedy Central Insider, BrooklynVegan.com, and Gawker. She is a regular monologist at Assscat (UCB Theatre's long running improv show hosted by Amy Poehler), Heeb Magazine's Storytelling, Moonwork, Jill Soloway's Sit N Spin, and Comedy Central's Crash Mansion, among others. In 2012, Margot was nominated for an ECNY Award (Excellence in Comedy, NY) for “Best Storyteller.” Margot Leitman lives in Los Angeles. Visit her online at MargotLeitman.com.
