Meg Wolitzer presents four works drawn from an evening of satirical stories about American political history, hosted by Andy Borowitz.Nothing is sacred.  First, Joe Yan imagines Abraham Lincoln, huckster, in “I'm Abraham Lincoln and I Beg Of You, Please Commemorate My Birthday With Mattress Sales,” read by Ikechukwu Ufomadu.  In “Running for Governor,” Mark Twain imagines himself in the political horse race.  The reader is John Cameron Mitchell.  John and Abigail Adams had a famously happy marriage, despite often being apart, and why not imagine them taking advantage of the 18th century version of modern media options?  That's the premise of Alexandra Petri's “John and Abigail Adams Try Sexting,” read by Ophira Eisenberg and Ikechukwu Ufomadu.  And the show wraps with a piece by Borowitz himself, “A Very Nixon Halloween,” inspired by a photograph of Nixon as an awkward civilian after he left office. The reader is Caroline Aaron.

When it was released just over 25 years ago, The Big Lebowski was a flop with critics. Now it is regarded as among the funniest movies ever made, one by which we all, well, abide. Josh Karp tells us how it came to be, the people who inspired it, and those who turned down roles in it. Can you imagine Mel Gibson playing the Dude? It almost happened. Then Melania Trump was in the news this week as her memoir entitled—what else?—Melania was released. Andy Borowitz has read it, and he tells us all about what's in it. Finally, Katya V. joins us from Moscow with her report on how Putin is fighting one war in Ukraine but another one within Russia and against its citizens.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The US Constitution became effective 235 years ago. It is a document that was way ahead of its time. Yet, while the document is the same as it was, much of our world has changed since then. We can talk about what it says and debate aspects about it. But what would it be like to live daily life according to what the document says? AJ Jacobs (https://ajjacobs.com/) is a New York Times bestselling author. He is also one of the funniest, smartest, and most curious people I have ever known. Each of his books have involved stretching his knowledge through experience and I call him a stuntman driven by his desire to learn. Instead of putting his body in danger, however, his stunts are doing things like bringing the constitution to life by walking through the streets of Manhattan with a tricorn hat and a musket. He does these and other feats while following various aspects of the Constitution to the letter. His latest book, The Year of Living Constitutionally: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Constitution's Original Meaning was a total delight to read. The book has received copious praise and the words that resonated most with me came from Andy Borowitz who said, “I didn't know how I learned so much while laughing so hard.” This is AJ's fifth interview on the SuperPsyched podcast, and I am so delighted to have him back. His commitment for personal growth, to live life according to his values, and to waving his freak flag fully is utterly inspiring to me. So, listen in as AJ talks about his year of living constitutionally.

is a satirical genius whose hilarious headlines alone are enough to help us survive all of the MAGA madness. He's a best-selling author, a comedian, a musician, and he just started his own Substack. I highly recommend you get to know more about this American hero. There's something special about comedy in times like these. It helps bring folks together to take a breath of fresh air.  And few people do it as well as Andy. He's smart, funny, and relentless in his effort to call out the absurdity of Trump world through scholarly wit. That's why I was thrilled to host him for my very first Substack interview. I hope you'll watch and enjoy it as much as I did.In our lighthearted and genuine conversation, Borowitz provided a clear way forward for all of us—not just to survive this election cycle, but to thrive. You might not hear a ton of jokes, but you will hear a lot of sage wisdom.I asked Andy what he thought about the recent violent political rhetoric and the MAGA culture today. As he covers in hilarious but frightening detail in his bestselling book Profiles in Ignorance, he said, “Trump is not smart. Trump is a very ignorant, poorly informed, stupid person. However, he's very talented…he is very good at reading the thirst for violence, and the anger and the revenge, the desire for retribution, and playing off of that.”He continued, “That's the thing that people have taken a long time to figure out. A lot of his followers like him because of how horrible he is.”One bit of our conversation that really stuck with me is when Andy explained how the current political environment has impacted how he approaches comedy.“Trump did change the calculus…And I think that's why I dispute people who think that Trump has been great for comedy. I think Trump's made comedy harder, because it's hard to make fun of a clown.” He explained, “So I kind of changed my approach a little bit. And rather than try to outdo Trump, I would try to take Trump's logic to its extreme and just work it out.”I also asked Andy what his thoughts are on Trump being the GOP nominee again, despite all the reasons they had to nominate anyone else.“What's really interesting, in recent history, you have to go back to the 1950s with Adlai Stevenson where a party has re-nominated somebody who lost,” Andy told me. “But we're not dealing with a political party anymore. We're dealing with a cult and a cult or religion really ignores facts.”Borowitz is absolutely right. Trump is a cult leader. And defeating him is going to require every bit of energy we have from now until November. And this work is exhausting. That's why I'm glad we have folks like Andy and interviews like these to help us refocus and recharge for the campaign ahead. Finally, speaking of the campaign ahead—I asked Andy what advice he has for our readers to stay positive and energized despite the constant onslaught of negativity in the news and on social media. His insight is powerful:“Even though I'm online, I'm telling people to get offline. All the evidence shows that the more we're on social media, the more we're on our phones, the unhappier we'll be,” Borowitz said.“Another piece of advice is if you're an activist or prone to be an activist, and you want to make the world a better place, for example, you want to reelect President Biden because he believes in democracy...If that's important to you, stop being an observer, stop being an audience member, be a participant.”Andy explained how he now serves on his local library's board, to do his part and be a participant. He put his sage wisdom into practice, and that's something I hope we all can try to do.The Dworkin Report is a reader-supported publication. For years, one political satirist has dared to push the limits of comedy with such groundbreaking fake-news headlines as “Matt Gaetz accuses Kevin McCarthy of behaving like an adult” and “Trump accuses media of not listening to the voices he hears in his head." But could that be set to change? With news that The New Yorker has laid off its resident liberal jokesmith, we consider the comedy and philosophy of Andy Borowitz. Look at the British press most days, and you'll find that the government and the royals are being skewered and made fun of. The Brits have a long tradition of publicly calling out their leaders for absurdity, stupidity or embarrassing behavior. In America, it seems that part of the population almost embraces this kind of behavior; that rather than calling it out, it votes for it. It celebrates it on talk radio and on Fox. Imagine an entire portion of the electorate for whom ignorance is bliss. What we do have, however, is a healthy tradition of satire but almost entirely on the left. Historically, from the likes of Will Rogers or H.L. Mencken or Ambrose Bierce and in more contemporary times, folks like Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce and Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Al Franken and Andy Borowitz. Andy is an award-winning comedian, a New York Times bestselling author, a graduate of Harvard College, where he became president of The Harvard Lampoon, and in 1998, he began contributing humor to The New Yorker‘s Shouts & Murmurs and Talk of the Town column. And in 2001, he created The Borowitz Report, a satirical news column that's must reading for anyone that cares about the country. Not only are we living in a time where people are proud of their ignorance, argues the writer and comedian Andy Borowitz, but some of our most educated politicians are now playing down their intelligence as a strategy to get elected. Borowitz, the author of the long-running satirical column The Borowitz Report, examines this phenomenon in his new book, “Profiles of Ignorance: How America's Politicians Got Dumb and Dumber.” “When Trump was elected, a lot of us supposedly knowledgeable people were taken by surprise,” he tells David Remnick. “But the more I researched the past fifty years, the more likely and plausible—and maybe even inevitable—his election was, because he actually had a great deal in common with his forebears.”

Andy starts the conversation with some anecdotes from his time working on 'The Facts of Life' and 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' and then pivots into the three-part structure of the book (4:02). In the opening "Ridicule" section, Andy details the history of anti-intellectualism in the modern conservative movement and how it contrasts with the "egg head" candidates often sought by the left (19:41). Next, they talk about the "Acceptance" phase, which breaks down how raw charisma and the cultural zeitgeist propelled Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump to mass popularity and positions of power (40:03). After the break they get to the "Celebration" chapters, which examines how Trumpist firebrands like Ron DeSantis became the face of the current GOP (51:21). Larry and Andy end the pod by pondering whether it's the politicians making the voters stupid or if the stupidity is already within the voters themselves (1:09:52). In their original habitat, the fish are kept under control by natural predators: groupers, eels, and sharks. But, elsewhere, predators can't compete, and lionfish—with their voracious appetite and high fecundity—are upending the equilibrium of reef life. The staff writer D. T. Max takes a stab at lionfish spearing off the coast of Florida and talks with one of the most passionate lionfish hunters diving today, Rachel Bowman.

His new book Profiles in Ignorance: How America's Politicians Got Dumb and Dumber is now available. Review “How did we slide into the abyss of liking our politicians to be—or to act—dumb rather than smart? In this funny but serious book, Andy Borowitz chronicles our embrace of anti-intellectualism.” —Walter Isaacson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Code Breaker “This is one of these brilliant books that makes you laugh until you cry. Borowitz masterfully throws light (and shade) on the confederacy of dunces who have fumbled their way into power. His writing has never been smarter, sharper, or more necessary.” —Susan Orlean, New York Times bestselling author of The Library Book “A devastatingly funny takedown of a veritable Mount Rushmore of incompetents . . . In the hallowed tradition of Will Rogers, Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, Ambrose Bierce, and other clear-eyed satirists, Borowitz skewers all manner of chronically befuddled, willfully ignorant dolts. . . . Ravaging this seemingly endless rogues' gallery of buffoonery and corruption, Borowitz marshals mind-boggling, breathtaking evidence. . . . While there are countless laughs in the book, they have a rueful edge given that we are all affected by such widespread ignorance.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Readers may laugh, cry, or swear under their breath (sometimes all at once) with this scathing survey of the seemingly increasing ignorance of American politicians. Borowitz, a writer of page and screen and satirist for The New Yorker, humorously examines the ever-increasing, lowering-of-the-bar expectations of presidential candidates' knowledge and beyond in this book that is perfect for fans of The Daily Show or John Lithgow's “Dumpty” series. . . . For readers who have ever looked at the political landscape and asked how or why, this is a book that will inform and infuriate.” —Library Journal (starred review) “Andy makes me laugh out loud, that's a given. In this book he has also made me think out loud. Profiles in Ignorance is hilarious, original, scary, prescient and a wake-up call for us all. A must read.” —Susie Essman, HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm “[Borowitz] sheds light on the cultural and economic trends that gave intellectualism a bad name and identifies the political operatives . . . who facilitated the rise of ignorance. Fans of The Borowitz Report will gobble this up.” —Publishers Weekly --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Jane Goodall is as revered a figure as modern science has to offer, though she prefers to call herself a naturalist rather than a scientist. Goodall learned a great deal about being human by studying our close relatives among the primates. When she began working, some of her research habits, such as naming her subjects and describing their personalities, caused consternation among other primatologists, who insisted that intelligence and emotion were the exclusive province of human intellect; Goodall persevered, and shifted how we conceive of the relationship between humans and other creatures. She's the author of more than thirty books for adults and children, including a new volume called “The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times.”    In her work as a conservationist and a United Nations “Messenger of Peace,” the eighty-seven-year-old Goodall used to travel as many as three hundred days per year. Since the pandemic began, she's been at her home in England, in the house where she grew up. In a conversation for the New Yorker Festival, The New Yorker's Andy Borowitz (known primarily as a humorist) asked Goodall about the secrets to her success as both a researcher and an advocate. “I'm very passionate,” she told him. “Secondly, I'm probably obstinate and I'm pretty resilient. So knock me over and I'm going to bounce back up. Because I will not be defeated.”

Doesn’t a debacle make us feel a kind of fearlessness for whatever may come next? This week, creative sparks fly from truly cringe-worthy inspiration.

Today's Rapid Response Friday does not take a victory lap about our successful prediction that Brett Kavanaugh would be Donald Trump's next nominee to the Supreme Court (but seriously, we called that right, y'all.)  Instead, Andrew and Thomas break down some of the current stories surrounding Kavanaugh to separate  fact from fiction and try and articulate the best mainstream case against confirming Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. In the pre-show, we give a shout-out to everyone who made the Opening Arguments Wiki possible -- go check it out!  It's amazing! After that, Andrew Was Wrong returns with a clarification from Episode 187 where Andrew misspoke.  And also, the guys have a slight laugh at Andrew's inability to pronounce locations of things. The main segment tackles a bunch of current stories surrounding Judge Kavanaugh, including:  (1) the allegation that Judge Kavanaugh has concluded that sitting Presidents can't be indicted; (2) the Yale open letter opposing his nomination; (3) a truly stupid article in The Hill arguing for a lawsuit to block Kavanaugh; (4) the potential conflict of interest with Kennedy's retirement; and (5) the notion of "packing the Court" in 2020.  Phew! Next, Andrew gives us an eight-second sneak peek at a court's refusal to permit the Trump administration to modify the Flores settlement and why that's good news. Finally, we end with an all new Thomas Takes The Bar Exam #83 involving spousal privilege.  If you'd like to play along, just retweet our episode on Twitter or share it on Facebook along with your guess and the #TTTBE hashtag.  We'll release the answer on next Tuesday's episode along with our favorite entry! Recent Appearances Andrew was just a guest co-host on Episode 75 of the Skepticrat podcast; go check it out!  Also, Andrew will be discussing Judge Kavanaugh with conservative talk show host Chuck Morse.  If you'd like to have either of us as a guest on your show, drop us an email at openarguments@gmail.com. Show Notes & Links For starters, here is the Tweet from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez we criticized, along with the pretty funny humor piece from Andy Borowitz. You should definitely read Kavanaugh's 2009 Law Review article “Separation of Powers During the Forty-Fourth Presidency and Beyond” in the Minnesota Law Review. This is the Yale Open letter. This is the dreadful Ken Levy article in The Hill that Andrew debunks. These are the actual Senate Rules, and remember that we broke down the "nuclear option" way back in Episode 59. On Anthony Kennedy's negotations, check out Rule 3(C)(1) of the Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges, which we previously discussed in Episode 129. As homework for next week, read the Court's order denying the Trump Administration's request to modify the Flores settlement, which we first covered in Episode 184. Jenny Allen, the humorist and author of the guffaw-inducing new book Would Everybody Please Stop: Reflections on Life and Other Bad Ideas, derives as much pleasure from eating as anyone I know. Consider this anecdote she shared with me about her food-loving stepmother: "One day she said, 'I made you something. I thought you'd like it.' It was an entire mixing bowl full of chocolate mousse...It was a huge bowl, and I just took it up to my room and just read and ate it all afternoon. I'm sure I felt sick afterwards, but it was...oh, my God, the best present ever." The New Yorker's Andy Borowitz, who is no slouch in the humor department has called Jenny one of the funniest writers alive, and so I had to ask her for the one piece of advice she would give to aspiring humor writers: "Something I say sometimes, which is I think even true for me is, when you think the piece is so eccentric or so idiosyncratic or so neurotic or so weird and so personally your own peccadilloes and anxieties, just when I think, boy, I'm gonna send this in, and my editor's gonna think, this woman is really nuts. That's when it's ready to send. And not before that." Jenny also happens to be one of the bravest souls I've ever met; her hilarious and moving one-woman play I Got Sick Then I Got Better, which describes her experience as a cancer survivor, is a testament to that. And I think anyone who listens to her in Part 1 of her Special Sauce interview will come away with more than a little inkling of her humor and her wonderful character, and will be left wanting more. (But that's what Part 2 is for.)

Joe Anderson rightfully exposes the dangerously bland Andy Borowitz for the black hole of comedy he is. Arish Singh takes the left wing media to task for wasting time futzing about with white status wars when there are Nazis to fight, Megan Kirby explores the tenuous place of ephemeral pop-culture comfort food in an increasingly uncomfortable world, and Sameena Mustafa gives us a glimpse into the beating white heart of Pantsuit Nation. Oz Elgun and Nic Wehrwein faced off in the Skewer debate to decide what's the best way to make Americans care about Aleppo: say dogs are being killed instead of humans, or rename Aleppo "White People Town"? Kevin, creator, and the host of RISK!, started his comedy career on the legendary sketch series The State on MTV. But in 2009, everything changed. “I was doing a solo show out West, playing characters as usual,” he says. “Afterward, Michael Ian Black [also of The State] said, ‘I kept hoping you’d drop the act and tell some of your own stories.’ I said, ‘Yikes, that just seems so risky…’ But even as I said it, I could feel in my gut that that kind of risk could lead to the best stuff.” The very next week, Kevin was on stage telling his stories. “Suddenly, I was looking right into the eyes of audience members. We were reacting to each other, like friends. After the show, people didn’t just say, ‘That was funny,’ they said, ‘Thank you. That got to me.’ I was finding the meaning in my own experiences and the people listening felt like they’d lived through these things with me. The more I worried I was taking a risk with a story – because it was too emotional, too provocative, or just too nuts – the more the audience lit up.” In August of 2009, host Kevin and producer Michelle Walson started the live show RISK! “where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public” at Arlene’s Grocery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was an instant hit. Stories ran the gamut from the sacred to the profane, the hilarious to the horrific – and for the audience, it was a chance to re-connect with the things that make us human. It’s still just about the most cathartic, laugh-out-loud, anything-goes kind of smorgasbord you’re likely to see anywhere. The monthly RISK! Live show, winner of an ECNY Award for Best Variety Show, now lives at The Bell House Theater in Brooklyn and the Nerdmelt Theater in LA. RISK! also tours to sold-out international crowds. Many remarkable people have shown a side of themselves on RISK! that you probably haven’t seen elsewhere, like Michael Ian Black, Janeane Garofalo, R. Ben Garant, Lisa Lampanelli, Kevin Nealon, Margaret Cho, Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman, Michael Showalter, Maria Bamford, Nick Swardson, Lili Taylor, Adam McKay, Rachel Dratch, Andy Borowitz, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Joe LoTruglio, and more. The audio podcast of RISK! – also hosted by Kevin Allison – premiered online in October of 2009. The podcast includes not just the best stories from the live shows but also “radio-style” stories and interstitial music and comedy from artists all over the world. Most episodes of the show are free and easy to download from iTunes and other sources. With new episodes released each Monday, the RISK! The podcast is the winner of an ECNY Award for Best Podcast and has been downloaded tens of millions of times to date. In 2010, Chris Castiglione and Jeff Barr joined RISK! As producers (and co-founders). With the new team in place, the RISK! Podcast grew from being a bi-monthly release to a regularly occurring weekly podcast. Meanwhile, the RISK! Live show went bi-coastal with live performances in Hollywood at the NerdMelt Theater (hosted by Beowulf Jones). In 2011, Kevin and Chris created The Story Studio, at www.thestorystudio.org, a school dedicated to teaching people from all walks of life to turn their most meaningful experiences into powerful self-expression. “Practically anybody will benefit from this training,” Kevin says. “We always say that, from the bar to the boardroom, a good story well told is what leaves a lasting impression.” New workshops through The Story Studio start each month, and corporate workshops can be custom-tailored to a company’s needs. RISK! is a labor of love, a public groundswell, and a start-up with one hell of a future in the works. Be a part of it all.
