He discusses the impact of his visits, how prisoners react to his Brooklyn accent, and the power of seeing someone who once walked their path now living a fulfilling life in recovery. He stresses that carrying the message to those in dark places is his most meaningful service work. The role of service in recovery is a central theme in this episode. Raymond emphasizes the importance of H&I (Hospitals & Institutions) service, recalling how he first heard the message of recovery in a similar setting. He encourages consistent service, noting that people often stop doing what worked for them once they get clean, which can lead to relapse. The conversation highlights the significance of simple service commitments, like making coffee at meetings, and how they contribute to stability and responsibility.Raymond shares his childhood struggles, growing up in Brooklyn as a Nuyorican with a single mother and experiencing deep-seated trauma, including his mother's grief over losing a child and his own battle with a congenital heart disease. He talks about the emotional pain of an absent father and how early feelings of shame, abandonment, and separation anxiety planted the seeds for addiction. Reflecting on recovery, he discusses how step work helped him uncover and address these underlying wounds. His addiction began early, starting with alcohol at the age of five and progressing to marijuana by age ten. By 13, he was using cocaine, and at 15, he was smoking crack. He describes how his life quickly spiraled, leading him to crime, violence, and a complete loss of control. His turning point came at 17, when he heard an H&I speaker share the message of recovery, sparking hope and change. Since getting clean, he has dedicated his life to helping others, particularly those who are still suffering in jails and institutions.Raymond discusses the necessity of a spiritual solution in recovery, sharing that many people relapse because they neglect their spiritual growth. He explains that addiction isn't just about substances—it's a disease that affects the mind, body, and soul. The conversation highlights the importance of humility, continued learning, and staying connected to recovery principles. This episode serves as a powerful reminder of the life-changing potential of recovery. Raymond's story is one of transformation, resilience, and service, making it an inspiring listen for anyone struggling with addiction or working in the recovery space.Tune in to Addicted to Recovery for more raw and real conversations about the journey to sobriety.

A bursting moment of electricity, the well intentioned first version of World music, and working in the Roosevelt Hotel Lobby 4-5 nights a week for 3 hours a night. Jacob Faulkner (LA LOM, The Americans) Los Angeles League of Musicians Album (Videos)- https://www.youtube.com/playlist "LA LOM In the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles's music scene, LA LOM stands out for its ability to seamlessly weave together the diverse genres and cultures of the city into its music. Short for The Los Angeles League of Musicians, LA LOM is composed of LA natives Zac Sokolow (Guitar), Jake Faulkner (Bass), and Nicholas Baker (Drums/Percussion). The roots of LA LOM reach back to 2019, when the band was assembled to play five nights a week in the lobby of the historic Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. Initially tasked with providing background music for hotel patrons, tourists, and passersby off the street, LA LOM soon began experimenting with a genre-transcending repertoire that reflects the diverse musical diaspora of Angelenos. LA LOM started out reimagining instrumental renditions of the soulful ballads from the 1950s and '60s that they grew up listening to on LA's oldies station, K-EARTH 101, evoking the laid-back aesthetic that defines the region, and drawing inspiration from luminaries like Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, and Brenda and the Tabulations. Their sonic palette expanded to encompass the romantic allure of classic Mexican Boleros and the Cumbia Sonidera woven into the very fabric of the city's soundscape, resonating through the streets from car stereos, backyard parties, and lively dance halls. LA LOM carved out a sound that blends all of these elements with the guitar-driven twang of Peruvian Chicha and Bakersfield Country. Zac Sokolow's musical lineage spans generations. He began his creative journey performing alongside his father, a respected figure in LA's bluegrass community, whose family relocated from Buenos Aires to LA in the 1930s. Jake Faulkner comes from a family of Venice artists and met Zac at age 16. Zac and Jake honed their craft through years of collaboration in various bands within Southern California's vibrant Rockabilly scene before eventually joining to form LA LOM. Nicholas Baker was steeped in Latin music from childhood by his grandmother, who hailed from a musical family in Durango, Mexico, and gained fame as a DJ on a Spanish-language radio station in Tucson, Arizona. He studied Latin percussion with renowned Nuyorican bassist and percussionist Roberto Miranda. LA LOM have quickly ascended to playing to thousands of people and have captured the attention of Beck, Vampire Weekend and Zane Lowe." Loísada was also a hot bed for activism, with residents coming together to fight against discrimination and for better housing and working conditions. Guzmán admits to I SEE U that his calling was to be a social worker as he embraced the culture and spirit of his community, working extensively with youth to enhance their lives and help guide them to their own aspirations.Guzmán started performing in popular street theater as a hobby to showcase his acting ability through the art of social and political advocacy. To supplement his social work with more cash, he also appeared in several indie films, including his first movie role in 1977, Short Eyes—a prison life drama written by close friend and playwright, Miguel “Mickey” Piñero. Co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Café, a haven for Black and Latinx artists and activists, Mickey even helped him land a role on NBC's Miami Vice in 1985—a role that would change Guzmán's life forever. 50 years and nearly 200 film and TV projects later, his comedic brilliance and authentic bravado have positioned him to become one of the most renowned and recognizable actors around the world.Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats with award-winning actor and producer, Luis Guzmán, from his farm in Vermont. She shared how prioritizing diversity, inclusion and equity can make being with horses better for all.  We also had a chance to nerd out about Michele's volunteer work for Equus-Soma Equine Osteology and Anatomy Learning Centre (a.k.a. the Bone Room) and talk about the value in horse trainers educating themselves about what's going on beneath their horses' skin. I am so appreciative of Michele's willingness to offer her perspective and share solutions and ideas surrounding these important topics, as well as her emphasis on empathy as a guiding standard when it comes to working with horses and humans. I hope you learn something new from our chat, and that it motivates you to take action in your corner of the horse world to help push forward much needed change to make our industry more inclusive, equitable and diverse. Michele Arana is the founder of In Stride Equestrian, a lesson and training facility that is dedicated to inclusion and education in the equine industry. As a Nuyorican woman, she is more than familiar with the discrimination BIPOC people in the equine world face and looks to have horses bridge that gap in her program. For this week's Latino USA, we're bringing you an episode from the newly released podcast series from WNYC Studios and Futuro Studios, La Brega, The Puerto Rican Experience in Eight Songs. Created by Nuyorican street kids in the mid-80s, freestyle music became the sound and story of second-generation Boricuas. Hip-hop and pop, Latin Caribbean rhythms and instruments, all came together in freestyle. The sound was ubiquitous in New York and later in Orlando, FL. Young Puerto Rican women became the face of the genre. They sang about love, heartbreak, and their sexual desires. In Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's “I Wonder If I Take You Home” —a huge hit in the genre— a young woman sings about that on her own terms and without shame, opening up mother-daughter conversations that weren't happening. You can subscribe to La Brega here.

How do we sustain nourishing roots in a time of displacement? This week, guest Alynda Mariposa Segarra invites listeners to examine their relationship to place, comfort, and survival as they discuss their newest album LIFE ON EARTH. Through the art form of music, Alynda holds together the complexities that come with wanting and needing to run away from oppressive systems while simultaneously having to confront what is happening right in front of us. Tapping into these themes, Alynda discusses their work with Freedom for Immigrants, emphasizing the urgency of action and compassion as we work to end systems of detainment and punishment.Winding through the intricacies of making art under capitalism, finding humility in our purposes, and fostering the safe havens of mutual aid, Alynda reminds us of the capacious ability we have to continually queer our culture. Drawing anger and vulnerability together through love, Alynda leaves us with the resounding call to live deeply in this world and to love it hard. Alynda Mariposa Segarra is a songwriter/storyteller who performs under the name Hurray for the Riff Raff. They are a Nuyorican queer artist born and raised in the Bronx, who got much of their musical/political education from the anarcho squatter punk scene of NYC. Alynda spent years as a freight train rider and eventually learned to make music on the street in New Orleans. Alynda has used the craft of songwriting as a tool for communication and protest. They have released 8 albums of music, most recently the critically acclaimed LIFE ON EARTH in February 2022.Join us on Patreon at patreon.com/forthewild for an extended version of this episode.Music by Hurray for the Riff Raff. This episode focuses on the special relationship between New York City and Puerto Rico, via the tales of pioneros, the first migrants to make the city their home and the many hundreds of thousands who came to the city during the great migration of the 1950s and 60s. Today there are more Puerto Ricans and people of Puerto Rican descent in New York City than in any other city in the nation — save for San Juan, Puerto Rico. And it has been so for decades. By the late 1960s, hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans lived in New York City, but in a metropolis of deteriorating infrastructure and financial woe, they often found themselves at the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder, in poverty-stricken neighborhoods.Puerto Rican poets and artists associated with the Nuyorican Movement, activated by the needs of their communities, began looking back to their origins, asking questions. In this special episode Greg is joined by several guests to look at the stories of Puerto Ricans from the 1890s until the early 1970s. With a focus on the origin stories of New York's great barrios -- including East Harlem, the Lower East Side and the South Bronx.FEATURING The origin of the Puerto Rican flag and the first bodegas in New York City!WITH Dr. Yarimar Bonilla and Carlos Vargas-Ramos of CUNY's Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO), Kat Lloyd and Pedro Garcia of the Tenement Museum and Angel Hernandez of the Huntington Free Library and Reading Room and the Webby Award winning podcast Go Bronx.

On the night of the presidential elections in 2016, Xochitl Gonzalez was at the Javits Center in New York City attending an event in support of Hillary Clinton's presidential nomination. She was talking to “other very liberal, Democratic volunteers” when the subject of Puerto Rico came up. Xochitl, born and raised into a Nuyorican family, was stunned and frustrated when she realized that nobody knew anything about the injustices her family's ancestral home had gone through. It was then and there that she decided that her first book would be about the experiences of the Puerto Rican diaspora. Xochitl's debut novel, Olga Dies Dreaming (2021) tells the fictional story of a Nuyorican family from Brooklyn. Olga, the main character of the novel, is an amalgamation of Xochitl's own life experiences as a daughter of Latino militant activist parents and her career as a wedding planner for wealthy New Yorkers. In this episode of Latino USA, Xochitl sits down with Maria Hinojosa to discuss why she wanted her first book to be so autobiographical but also highly political. And how she decided to leave her wedding business behind to fulfill her dream of writing.
