Alan Alda spent his early years in the burlesque theatres where his father, the actor Robert Alda, would perform. Those early years opened his eyes in more ways than one: “I was very aware of the naked women,” he told The New Yorker's Michael Schulman, “but I was also aware of the comics.” Watching from the wings, Alda grew an appreciation for being funny, being creative, and being present. He put those skills to use for eleven years on “M*A*S*H” and in dozens of other performances on stage and screen—recently, as a divorce lawyer for Adam Driver's character in “Marriage Story.” But it was only later in life that Alda realized his skills might be useful in another arena: science. Alda made it his crusade to help scientists communicate their ideas to a broad audience. “What occurred to me,” Alda told Schulman, “was that if we trained scientists starting from actually improvising, they would be able to relate to the audience the way they were relating to me.” He hosted a series of science programs and founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. He also started a podcast. On “Clear+Vivid with Alan Alda,” Alda interviews luminaries from the fields of science, politics, and entertainment, drawing on his training to make their specialist knowledge accessible to listeners. Interviewing, he thinks, isn't unlike performing with a scene partner: “You have to relate to the other person,” says Alda. “You have to observe the other person. You have to be watching their face, their body and language” to determine what it is the guest “really means.” Plus, if you're still looking for something for the kids to do this summer, have you considered Horse Camp? A comedy sketch by Emily Flake and Sarah Hutto.

In September, “Free Fall” seemed to be everywhere. In her latest long form work for The New Yorker, Emily Flake captured a sense of existential ennui that permeated much of the population six months into a pandemic-driven shut down. It was, one of the cartoonist’s most widely-shared works for the magazine since “Young and Dumb Inside,” which explored her decades’ long love for the punk band, Jawbreaker. Flake is probably best know as the long-time publisher of New Yorker gag strips, but her deeply personal comics essays strike an entirely different chord among its readership. Flake joined us to the discuss the process of putting heartfelt and personal work on paper and how the pandemic has impacted her comics.

Emily Flake is a hugely successful New Yorker cartoonist, MOTHER, wife and so much more. She is inspiring but in the best most real way. She breaks down motherhood for me in a manageable way. Emily Flake began cartooning for The New Yorker in 2008 and has had more than a hundred cartoons published in the magazine since. Her cartoons, essays, and illustrations have also appeared in Mad, the New York Times, the New Statesman, the Wall Street Journal, the Globe and Mail, and in many other publications. Her most recent book is “That Was Awkward: The Art and Etiquette of the Awkward Hug.” More about Emily HERE: https://www.newyorker.com/contributors/emily-flake

Talking about death can be difficult. But Lois Perelson-Gross believes people are eager to find a way in and begin to feel comfortable talking about the inevitable, so she helped launch Reimagine End of Life, a not-for-profit whose mission is to publicly explore death and celebrate life through creativity and conversation. Reimagine recently held its first ever festival in New York City, where some big questions about life and death were explored in over 300 unique events. On the show, Lois tells us how she went from being a Vice President at Goldman Sachs to launching her second career as a palliative care chaplain focused on humanism in medicine. She talks about how Reimagine evolved and about the Graphic Medicine-related events at the NYC festival, which included exhibits and panel discussions with cartoonists Emily Flake, Ben Schwartz, Roz Chast and others who address mortality in their often funny and poignant comics. Lois tells us about her own project, “Never the Right Time,” which debuted at the festival and combines the work of New Yorker magazine cartoonists with factual information about end of life care and end of life wishes. She also offers tools you can use to get past the stigma of talking about death and dying, and start having meaningful conversations. Tina Brown is a legend in New York publishing. She was barely thirty years old when she was recruited from London to take over a foundering Vanity Fair. Take over she did, becoming one of the power centers of New York culture by bringing together the intellectual world and the celebrity world of entertainment. She later brought enormous change to The New Yorker (including, for the first time, photographs); she launched Talk magazine with Harvey Weinstein; and she helped launch the Daily Beast. Her new book, “The Vanity Fair Diaries, 1983-1992” is a kind of coming-of-age story about a pre-Internet era of unruffled ambition, unlimited budgets, big shoulders, big hair, and fabulous parties. Tina Brown tells David Remnick that her experience with Weinstein, as unpleasant as it was—she found the mogul “bullying [and] duplicitous,” profane and erratic—did not prepare her for the revelations of brutality and intimidation that have been published in The New Yorker and elsewhere. The experience has shaken her. “I have friends who've been accused of things who I want instinctively to defend, but I've held back,” Brown says. “Because I don't know what's coming next. The truth is, you realize you don't really know anybody.” Plus, the cartoonist Emily Flake on the joys of Rudy's Bar, where the combo of a shot and a beer costs five bucks. The sense of history and ritual, and the troubles confessed across generations, remind her of church—but at church, Flake points out, “they're not going to let you sit around for six hours and drink.” This episode originally aired on November 10, 2017
