The nominations are in, Slackers! This week I discuss the nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2023. The HOF has refined their criteria to explain some of the less "rockin'" inductees from recent years. Perhaps it is time to change the name from the Rock and Roll to the Music Hall of Fame? This year's list draws from hip hop, R&B, rock, metal, country and pop. All can legitimately be considered worthy entrants, so it is definitely no longer a "rock only" HOF.It is cool to see bands that have solidly Gen X members (Rage Against The Machine, The White Stripes, A Tribe Called Quest) mixed in with some long overdue artists (Willie Nelson, Cyndi Lauper, Warren Zevon) in this year's group of nominees. What do you think of this year's nominees? And who do you think will make it in?

Hey, Slackers! This is a super sized episode of the podcast!Although it is almost hard to believe, it's been 30 years this month since Carlos and I graduated high school. What better excuse to take a look at the top of the charts for 1991 and 1992, and check out the top movies of those years?! There might also be a guilty pleasure or two (don't judge me)!We compare our own top 10 songs from senior year, and unsurprisingly we have very similar tastes! Our number ones may surprise you!So settle in and take a journey back to the years when grunge broke out, hip hop was taking unexpected turns, Will Smith made the leap from TV to film, and the T-1000 freaked everyone out!
Jeff Bezos is a punk. Inspired by the wave of unionization and political awakenings over the past few years, the Tribe decided to recruit an OG in this grassroots warfare in sussing out music's role, if any, in getting political messaging across and affecting change. Guest Caullen Hudson (of SoapBox Productions), aka Dr. Cornell Mid-West himself came through and enlightened the pod on the dual rise of political activism and drill rap in the city of Chicago, and how much they have in common. 0:00 Intros, AKAs 4:40 Roe v Wade oof. 7:30 Kendrick Lamar Heart Pt. 5 reaction 12:00 Check the Rhyme 30:30 Modern Day Negro Spirituals 56:00 Conclusions SoapBox Productions: https://www.soapboxpo.com/ IG: @caullenfit Intro music: Panama Rain Prod. by Danya Vodovoz | https://danyavodovoz.bandcamp.com/track/panama-rain | Royalty-free music. “All the videos, songs, images, and graphics used in the video belong to their respective owners and I or this channel does not claim any right over them. In 2019, Noname posted a tweet stating she was no longer going to do music for predominantly "white crowds" at rap concerts. This brought up the question, was she right? Is she right to believe that rap music should be mainly consumed by POC? Denzel hosts this weeks episode of the Tempo Tribe going deeper into the infamous Noname tweet and the subject of rap concerts and predominantly white crowds. Tune in! Shahid Mohammed, cut it with precision: this week Pop Screen is going back to the Daisy Age of hip-hop with Michael Rapaport's documentary Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. Somewhat incredibly the first ever documentary about a hip-hop band, this warts-and-all look at Tribe's history annoyed Q-Tip by focusing on the tensions between him and the late Phife Dawg. But the film as a whole is fonder and more sensitive than Rapaport's career as a social media nuisance would have you believe. This week, My Favourite Film's Gav Smith joins us for the first time to discuss Tribe's vast musical legacy, as well as the golden age of semi-legal sampling, the film's evocative portrait of East Coast hip-hop back when it was an underground scene, and Graham's slightly delusional belief that The Love Movement isn't that bad. There's also room for digressions on The Source magazine's fall from grace, Manic Street Preachers song titles and Spike Jonze's Beastie Boys documentary. Podcasts to go: if you want more Pop Screen, our Patreon backers get a bonus episode every month. This month's launches tomorrow, and it's about Tom Hooper's Cats, so, y'know. You also get our other movie podcast Director's Lottery and Graham's twice-weekly classic Doctor Who reviews.
Considering it was the first album I ever owned, I don't think there could be a more fitting episode 1 than The Low End Theory. My guest today is my longtime friend Tom Pelisson, or as we call him Pel. For over 25 years, Pel and I have been hanging out and obsessing over music. This is one album we both hold in the highest of regard. We even saw A Tribe Called Quest live together. If this feels like two old friends talking it's because it is. I learned a ton about the format of the show as I went so stick with me. Enjoy!

On March 22, 2016, Malik Izaak Taylor, aka Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, died at the age of 45 due to complications related to diabetes. He left a massive void in hip hop music and culture, forever changing the way hip hop sounds, breathes, and lives on. On S6E06, I talk to Phife's longtime manager, producer, and friend, DJ Rasta Root, about his personal and professional relationship with Phife, the five-year journey of completing Phife's sophomore album, and what we can expect from the upcoming posthumous release.
Our special guest this week is Virginia's very own, Mad Skillz! The infamous ghostwriter talks about his early link up with Q-Tip, working with J Dilla, writing the yearly rap-ups and more. This week The Bassment Boys chop it up about the cultural impact of The Native Tongues. Were they the forerunners of the Neo-Soul movement? Which group was the best? Who dropped the best album? We discuss all of this and more on this episode of The Bassment.
While I believe we are all given individual talents and skills, and I believe we have a duty to use those talents and skills to the best of our ability, very few of us are blessed with a calling. It is so rare that we are hit over the head with a pre-chosen destiny, that we have no choice but to follow that path all the way through. Some authors, songwriters, and artists experience this. Where they feel as though they are simply a conduit for their medium. It’s exactly why I am doing this podcast. And it is this calling that emerged within one of the founders of conscious hip hop, Speech Thomas. Creating Arrested Development in the early ’90s, Speech saw fame, fortune, and success at a very young age. But that didn’t mean it came overnight. Speech started out like most rappers, speaking about all the typical things. But once he came to Atlanta and found another like-minded voice in the hip hop community, all that changed. Thanks to the influence of groups like public enemy and BDP, the conscious rap genre emerged. And thanks to groups like arrested development, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and many others, a new stream of thought found its place in the hip hop world. This voice was different, this message stood for something and as soon as it was recognized for what it was and the impact it was making, it was promptly shut down. Back to the same stereotypically images the entertainment industry wants you to see, especially that of black life and culture. But Speech never let this slow him down. Despite struggles within the band and a solo career that never materialized stateside, Speech kept with music and the mission. Most recently taking a big leap into the field of Documentaries, Speech has chronicled the systematic exploitation of the black image in a 3 part docu-series out now. And coming out this week is his groundbreaking new documentary “16 Bars”. This full-length feature film takes you inside County jail, spending time with inmates, and producing an album that gives a voice to those who don’t have one. And what a voice! His compassion for his fellow man has given Speech his calling, and that calling keeps him constantly moving, growing, and speaking. Check out my recent conversation with Arrested Development frontman, 2-time Grammy winner, and one of the most conscious humans you will ever meet, my man, Speech….

This episode of Long Night with Vish Khanna was recorded before a live studio audience at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, Ontario during Long Winter on Friday January 5, 2018. Our topic was the state of Canadian hip-hop and our guest panellists were Erin Ashley, DTS, Tia Gordon, Just John, and Jwyze. With sidekick James Keast and our house band, the Bicycles. Produced by Vish Khanna and Long Winter. Recorded by Matthew Lederman. Photos by Shane Parent. Harrison is a young music producer based in his hometown of Toronto, Ontario. Now in his early 20s, Harrison first turned heads when he began uploading sample-based songs to Soundcloud in his teens. He has evolved into one of Toronto’s most prolific producers, crafting his own original electronic, hip-hop, R&B, and pop sound that has won him legions of fans and peers. In 2016, Last Gang released his debut LP, Checkpoint Titanium, which Harrison continues to tour behind when not working hard on a follow-up. I was invited into his Toronto home recently where we discussed his hometown and musical awakening, his love for Netflix and video games, why he doesn’t sing or rap over his music, his special guest vocalists and whom he’d love to work with, and much more. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Peace. You might have heard us alluding to the homie Chad's tapes on recent episodes, well here's the deal. Out of the blue the dude hit up the Hip Hop hoarder @Large looking to donate his legendary tape collection to @'s Dope Vault. The collection is full of dope tapes that used to get played back in the school days on one of those yellow Sony Sports Walkman's with the latch that flipped over the buttons or on a ghetto blaster wedged between the two front seats of Chad's pops late model Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue (It might have been a Plymouth Diplomat, same damn thing really). This was inevitably going to lead to a mix of some music that could be found on these tapes... and here it is! As a matter of fact the .mp3 rip of DJ Stress' "Homeless Fate" was amongst the tapes. Thanks to the homie Chad for keeping it in the fam and for keeping a brother laced with many a dub back in the day.
