Confidence grows when we feel safe to fail and make mistakes. Sports people typically attribute confidence to believing they can beat anyone. So I was surprised when an England cricketer linked the team's recent historic success to their willingness to lose games. The England test cricket team has been playing a completely different brand of cricket. It's expansive, exciting, and "fearless". As a result, it comes across as extremely confident. But is that confidence built on what they can expect to happen when they fail instead of simply believing they can beat everyone? In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I explore the idea that confidence (and excellence) can be grown in unlikely places when people, things, cultures, and processes make it feel safe to mess up. Table of contentsThe Three Little Pigs | 3:12Confidence And The Desired Outcome | 10:16Misplaced Confidence | 13:50Confidence is The Safety to Fail | 20:10Good Leaders Show It's Safe To Fail | 28:30Playing It Safe Is a Failure of Safety | 31:32Bringing vs Burying Failure | 33:48What Happens When We Run Out? | 36:32Fear of Being Misunderstood (Bad Faith Is Unsafe) | 41:00The Team Makes It Safe To Fail, The Crowd Not So Much | 45:20Arrogance ("Over-Confidence") is a Lack of True Confidence | 50:32Safety To Fail And The Road To Excellence | 57:40Hunting For Confidence (A Courtyard Workshop) | 58:56 The Three Little Pigs | 3:12 Do you remember the story of the Three Little Pigs? It's a perfect tale to help us consider different sources of confidence in everyday life. Confidence And The Desired Outcome | 10:16 We often think about confidence in broad and general terms. When we do this, very few of us would not wish we had more of it, making us susceptible to products and services advertised with a promise of helping us become more confident and self-assured in life. As such, we will always come up short again. So it's far better to consider our confidence in particular situations, environments, and projects. The three pigs had an objective. They needed to build strong, resilient houses that withstand adverse winter weather and keep the big bad wolf at bay. Misplaced Confidence | 13:50 The first little pig wanted to build his house as quickly as possible so he could play. He had confidence that there was nothing to worry about. The second little pig wanted to build a better house but was distracted when he saw his brother playing. He had confidence that if there weren't any storms or wolves, things would probably be okay. The third little pig wanted to build a house that he could trust. He had confidence that if he did the job properly, his home would protect him from the weather and the wolf. Confidence is The Safety to Fail | 20:10 The third little pig creates a safe environment. WHEN the winter weather hits and WHEN the wolf comes knocking, he knows he can rely on the house he's built to keep him safe from what would otherwise be harmful. The environment that the current English cricket leadership have built is similar. Rather than saying, "we won't lose", like the first two pigs, they have created an infrastructure around the safety TO lose. Safety is a source of confidence. It means you're free to focus on what matters more than worrying about what happens when things go wrong. Good Leaders Show It's Safe To Fail | 28:30 We are often so afraid of failure that we try to deny its inevitability. However, in many industries, if you're not failing, you're not succeeding. Failure is a by-product of taking risks. If you work in intelligence, innovation, or any industry that makes predictions, if you're not getting things wrong, you're not taking the necessary risks to get things right. Certainty is only possible when it's too late. The best leaders show us that it's safe to fail. Not to encourage sloppiness but to reassure us that it will be OK on the other side.

Transcript: Hello! This is Pastor Don of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective! In our current cultural climate, we are increasingly tempted to become anxious over politics. We can be tempted to get upset that things are not going the “right way”. However, as Christians we need not be anxious. Rather, we are free to walk in faith, despite political disappointment or disagreement. Now, why? Our anxiety and anger stem from a misplaced confidence—fixing our eyes on self and would-be saviors, instead of Christ. The Scriptures are clear: The kingdom of God is not inaugurated with the next session of Congress. The Messiah doesn't arrive on Air Force One. Jesus is not coming to take sides. He is coming to take over. As Abraham Lincoln put it so well at a time of great division: “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.” Remember, the early Christians were put to death for their simple confession, “Jesus is Lord!” By this, they were saying that no human leader or political regime is ultimate. Their hope and allegiance were in Christ Jesus, and the powers-that-be saw that as a threat. These Christians had their own center of gravity and so could not be manipulated by the state or society. As Christians, I urge you with renewed fervor to look to the Savior, not to Caesar. This allows us to engage the public square both courageously and peaceably. It frees us to enter the voting booth with the proper perspective: rightfully fulfilling our duty as citizens, not frantically looking for salvation. Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective. “For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.” ~ Ephesians 1:15-23 (ESV)

(as presented by Lisa Bishop) If you want unwavering confidence in life, it matters who and what you place your confidence in. As a follower of Jesus, we need to take inventory of the ways we pursue assurance, and how we misplace our confidence in things other than him. What is a fail proof method to grow in unwavering confidence? Immersing yourself in the Word of God so that you are reminded of the character of God and his promises to you. When you remember who God is, your confidence will increase. I know it can be hard to remain steadfast in our confidence in the Lord. Life circumstances come, we are caught off guard and our confidence can be like a teeter totter. One minute it is high, the next minute it is low. But as we mature in our faith, we level out and we learn that no matter our circumstances, God can be trusted. “In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge” (Proverbs 14:26, ESV). When we are instructed to fear the Lord the word fear means to show honor, reverence, and a sense of awe towards God. And in Proverbs 14:26 the fear of the Lord, means an awe of God that moves us from self-confidence and towards strong confidence in his love and greatness. As his child, God will always provide himself as a refuge for you. This means when life is hard and you are tempted to despair, be discouraged or doubt God, he is, as the Psalmist says in Psalm 46:1, your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. While life may throw you curveballs and loss and chaos may ensue at the most surprising times, you serve a God who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is not surprised by the things that life throws your way, He sees you. He knows, he cares, he is with you. “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you” (Hebrews 13:5b, NLT). What is one step you will take in building your unwavering confidence in God? Maybe it is journaling so that you can reflect back on the ways that you saw God working in your life. Maybe it is reciting the names and attributes of God so that you remember his character. As the Psalmist says in Psalm 62:8, “Trust [confidently] in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” (Click here to download the message for the entire week.)

(as presented by Lisa Bishop) In Psalm 16:7-9 the Psalmist declares: “I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.” You can hear the Psalmist's unwavering confidence in receiving the counsel and instruction of the Lord. He knows God will guide him! And notice the reason that the Psalmist is so confident in receiving godly wisdom, why he is not shaken and his flesh dwells secure. The reason he does not waver is because he has set the Lord always before him. And when he sets the Lord before him, when he puts God first and seeks him first, the Psalmist's heart is glad and his whole being rejoices. I love how God is so straight forward. How he makes his promises so clear in his Word and the benefits when we obey. James 1:5 instructs us when it says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Where are you relying on your own wisdom when God is inviting you to ask for godly counsel? Where are you putting your confidence in human instruction and not divine guidance? Maybe you are in the midst of a career transition and up until now you have tried to figure out the next steps on your own. Perhaps you are in a financial crisis or your marriage is in ruin and you are seeking the counsel of friends before putting God first and asking him to instruct you. If you are a follower of Jesus that means that you received the Holy Spirit the moment you put your confidence in and received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. And Jesus says that his Holy Spirit is your counselor, your guide, your helper, your wisdom. Bring your current circumstance before the Lord, put him first. Resist seeking human advice before seeking the counsel of God. Watch out for ways you misplace your confidence and redirect your trust to Jesus. Ask him to help you. He is waiting to give to you generously.

(as presented by Lisa Bishop) Have you ever tried to figure something out, relying on your own knowledge and perception only to be frustrated and maybe a little discouraged? A very dear friend of mine, Mercy, lives in Zambia. She and I met five years ago when she was in the United States. We quickly became friends even though we are separated by over 8300 miles. Thanks to technology we keep in touch. Last year when I spent time in Zambia I was able to see a project that Mercy is working on. After being in an abusive marriage and losing a niece to suicide because of spousal abuse, the Lord gave her a vision to build a safehouse for abused women and children. Mercy was pastoring full time when the Lord instructed her to quit her job and sell everything. As Mercy tells the story, it did not make sense to her so she delayed two years until finally she could no longer ignore God's call. Mercy said yes when the Lord gave her this incredible God-sized vision. She had no clue how the funds would be raised to buy a plot of land in the bush and to build and staff the safehouse, but Mercy stepped out in faith. Her confidence in God propelled her forward. It is quite amazing to witness. Being the planner that I am and wanting to feel some measure of control, I marvel at how Mercy has completely surrendered and trusted the Lord to provide what she needs to fulfill God's vision. Just the other day I asked her how things are going with the safehouse. She said, “I just take each day and trust. The Lord started it and he will finish it. I am trusting him to finish and accomplish what he began.” If that isn't unwavering confidence in the Lord I don't know what is! Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.“ Jeremiah 17:7 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.” Where is your confidence and trust? Are you in the midst of a circumstance where you are relying on your own understanding to reach a solution? Maybe a relational breakdown, work conflict or a job loss? Are you in a situation where you are trying to lean on your own understanding? Ask God what he wants you to do at this moment. Ask Jesus to help you put your confidence in him and to submit your ways to him…and he will make your paths straight.

(as presented by Lisa Bishop) In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul reminds us to put no confidence in the flesh but to put our confidence in The Lord. “Boast in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: (Philippians 3:3b-4). And then in verses 5-6 he starts a laundry list of reasons for his flesh boosting confidence: “Circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless (Philippians 3:5-6). In his days before following Jesus, I can see Paul pounding his chest with pride as he read through this list, but now that his allegiance is to Jesus and he is living his life for God, his posture is different. Even with his own impressive pedigree, Paul warns us to put our confidence in the Lord and not in our accomplishments, in our own abilities. We can so easily find ourselves boasting and bragging about our achievements that we can become arrogant and prideful. Proverbs 16:18 signals us about misplaced confidence when it says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Now does this mean we can't be confident in our abilities? No, but it does remind us that our ultimate confidence is not in ourselves but in Jesus himself. On the other hand, maybe you are not arrogant and prideful and boastful. Maybe you sell yourself short and shrink back because you don't think you are enough or that you are inadequate. That is putting confidence in your flesh too because you aren't relying on who Jesus says you are and your identity in him. Thinking less of yourself is not the antidote to pride. Placing your confidence in Jesus is the ultimate prize. Confidence in the flesh can go both ways. Boasting and hiding when our confidence is misplaced. What or who is your confidence dependent upon? Ask God to reveal areas where you are boasting in your flesh and not in him.

(as presented by Lisa Bishop) Several years ago, 40 to be exact, my best friend and I wanted to be part of the 8th grade cheerleading squad. I had never done the splits, nor come close in my life, but we decided to practice and give it a shot. For several weeks we perfected our cartwheels and roundoffs. I remember inch by inch getting closer and closer to doing the splits as I looked in the wall of mirrors in my parent's bedroom. I was trying to build my skill and my confidence as we prepared for tryouts. Fast forward a few weeks and it was time to put our skills to the test. I distinctly remember walking into my middle school building and approaching the gymnasium with fear gripping me and butterflies in my stomach. Have you ever felt that? We got a few feet away from the door when we both looked at each other and in total fear and panic turned around and high tailed it the other way. We had lost our confidence and fear caused us to run. I never ended up trying out for cheerleading. I will never know if I could have made the cut but to this day I wonder what would have happened if I did not let fear of failure grip me. The fear of being rejected, not making the team, looking like a fool and what other people would think of me overruled my confidence to try. It reminds me of when Noah built the arc. Now I am not saying that 8th grade cheerleading tryouts hold a candle to Noah building the arc, but stick with me here. We see Noah's story in the book of Genesis. As God is preparing to bring judgment on the earth through a massive flood, he instructs Noah to build a huge boat when there is not even a drop of rain or a cloud in sight. Yet regardless of what he could not see, Noah obeyed God. He followed God's instructions even when they did not make sense at the time. I can imagine the mocking and jeering that must have happened as Noah labored to build and obey God. He probably looked ridiculous. Yet, if Noah would have put his confidence in what other people thought of him, he never would have picked up that first piece of wood. Even though others probably thought he was crazy, he remained faithful. His confidence was not in what others thought about him but what in God instructed him to do. When we put our confidence in the opinion of others, what people think about us, it will cause us to miss out. When we live our lives to avoid the feeling of rejection or in the mode of self-protection, we can forfeit a fulfilling future. When we give power to the opinions of others, we play small rather than stepping into obedience and a grand adventure with God. Where are you putting your confidence in—the opinion of others and not in God?

What happens when you put your confidence in man? Let's break it down. Trump and disgraced pervert Bill O'Reilly were on a nationwide “History” tour to discuss how things were accomplished, both good and bad, during the four years of Mr. Trump's presidency. The bad would be Operation Warp Speed, the Trump initiative which siphoned billions of taxpayer dollars to the pharmaceutical industry to aid in their creation of an experimental gene therapy. Supporters have found themselves reeling over Trump's admission to not only getting the vaccine and booster, but his encouragement to get the vaccine with an obligatory nod to freedom of choice. You could hear the collective anguish as the clip spread like wildfire around the Internet. But the disappointment is not in the Don's seemingly new adherence to the global elites' depopulation plan, but in how our trust in true change was based in one man. See, Trump burst in the scene as the antidote to the deep state, running as an outsider to the establishment which had held us captive for so long. This energized many who were normally not politically active. Like all other trends, this has come to an end.Man tends to lean towards solutions which advance his own purposes. This often involves double-mindedness, leading to waffling of ideas, and the eventual abandonment of principles. When you put your confidence and trust in man, you will be let down. However, if we place our trust in Jesus Christ, He will never change for He is God, and He is the same yesterday, today and forever. The Sweet Psalmist of Israel said it best when he penned Psalm 118:8-9: “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” Be sure to put your trust in the right Person. For more Daily Breakdown, go to: https://breakdradio.com/category/the-daily-breakdown/Follow on all the socials: https://breakdradio.contactin.bio/

So where should our confidence lie? This text (and many others in the Bible) tells us that our confidence should rest in Jesus alone.

Wednesday 29th May 2019 Consumer confidence in the US hit a six month high, yet there’s a continued flight to bonds, pushing treasury yields to the lowest level since September 2017. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Ray Attrill whether the confidence is misplaced? After all, manufacturing data is showing a slide and forecasts are predicting a cut in growth when more tariffs are added on Chinese imports. They also discuss reports of a housing bounce after the Australian election and what to expect from the RBNZ today, with the Financial Stability Report and a session in front of a parliamentary committee for the Governor. Plus, a Brexit poll shows what markets fear – widening support for Brexit and a Labour win if the UK heads to another general election.

This week Pastor Cazis continues the series "Uncommon. A Study in Philippians. The message today is "Uncommon Confidence." Who have you placed your confidence in? In these verses Paul makes a few important points: I. Misplaced Confidence v. 1-2 Beware of dogs. Beware of evil workers. Beware of the concision. II. True Confidence v. 3-9 They worship by the Spirit of God. They glory in Jesus. They have no confidence in the flesh. Life Application: Paul made life-changing decisions. 1.Paul counted his “gains” as “loss.” 2.Paul reordered his life priorities. Our text is Philippians 3:1-11 1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. 3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. I'm not sure why, but this weekend made me take pause from a General Aviation perspective.  There were two fatal accidents in SW Missouri that caught my eye.  The first, was a tragic story of a father, mother, and two children that were killed when the A36 took off from a friend's grass field, only to stall at about 100 feet over the tree tops.  Their 5 year old is in critical condition.  The second was a business owner that entered into a thunderstorm which ripped his Saratoga into pieces.  As a pilot, I immediately jumped to the conclusion in the first accident that the field may have been short, soft, and probably at a high density altitude.  With 5 people, even though three were children, luggage, and who knows how much fuel, I can imagine the pilot saw the trees coming at him, pulled back and took aim for the tree tops.  My theory could be way off base, but if it is, then this type of accident probably happened somewhere else recently.  Since no thunderstorm has ever outpaced an airplane, the pilot flew into the storm, expecting to get through it.   My experience is that when there is an accident, pilots that read about it, generally figure out what went wrong in less than 30 minutes, which is proved right a year later, when the NTSB releases its findings that the pilot was unable to maintain control of the airplane when it (fill in the blank).  The reason why our community is able to pinpoint the issue, is because the list of alternatives is finite, and we've been through this before.  So the question is, if the list is so small and its the same mistakes over and over, then why aren't pilots (especially the good ones), staying out of those situations?   The answer is discussed and discovered in tonight's show.   As pilot's we are taught about proper flight planning to limit risks associated with making a flight.  We are given cool mnemonics, like, IMSAFE (Illness, Medications, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion/Eating) and PAVE (Pilot, Aircraft, environmental, External pressures).  We're also taught about dangerous attitudes:   * Anti-Authority * Impulsive * Invulnerability * Macho * Resignation   And to top it off, all pilots are taught to make and respect personal minimums.  Seems like we have plenty of education on how to make intelligent decisions regarding a flight.   The problem is that pilots are also taught to be procedural and to stick to a process, whether its GUMPS (Gas, Undercarriage, Mixture, Prop, Safety/Switches or the 5 (or 7) T's (Turn, Time, Twist, Throttle, Talk, Tires, Track).  It doesn't matter if your plane doesn't have retractable gear, just skip that step.  We can apply our acronyms to a diverse set of circumstances.  The same is said for personal minimums.  We're taught to determine our minimum ceilings, visibility, and cross wind component and commit that to memory.  There are two problems with this.  One, the list is incomplete.  Doesn't it also make sense to add items like how much fuel should you have when you land at your destination, how much sleep you should have the night before a flight, and various other factors.  Second, the personal minimum equation assumes it only changes when your confidence supports making the change.  In reality, your personal minimums should change with each flight, based on what aircraft you'll be flying, the weather, the passengers, the destination airport, and so on.  And why don't we do live by this concept?  COMPLACENCY and MISPLACED CONFIDENCE.  We fly between these two airports all the time, I can go.  Never mind that you're flying in a different aircraft that doesn't have the horsepower and avionics that you're so used to flying.  Never mind that you didn't sleep so well and that you skipped breakfast.  It's decent weather, so I am good to go!     True confidence comes from practicing with a purpose, proper planning, and understanding the factors and alternatives in play for each flying event.  That confidence will drive a proper set of considerations in building your custom personal minimums for that flight.  As pilots, we have the power to make a significant contribution to making our passion a safer and more rewarding experience.  I have a saying that everyone is either committed or complacent, there is no in-between.  Right now, which one is you?  More important, starting from this point forward, which one will be you?   BLUE SKIES and TAILWINDS!

What's the appeal of crystal meth? Is it really worth taking, just so you can experience our podcast in 3D? Probably not, for at least two reasons. Stick with the alcoholism, OK? Our Name 5 Things segment this week takes a pornographic turn when Warren asks us to derive the adult movie parody titles for several recent Hollywood films. You might think that those few minutes spent thinking of bad puns have limited appeal. Good call! But it's still fun to learn about our favourite porn genres. Spoiler alert: T-Bone knows a lot about this topic.
