Nearly 25 million women live below the poverty line in the U.S., but menstrual products are not covered by food stamps. Additionally, 38 states tax tampons and other feminine hygiene products as non-essentials. In this episode, we speak with Molly Hayward, a founder on the frontlines of destigmatizing menstrual care. Molly is the founder and Chief Brand Officer of Cora, a company that sells organic feminine hygiene products, including tampons, pads, and more. Cora also provides menstrual products to women in underserved communities in the U.S. and abroad. Molly is also the founder of Blood & Milk, a community covering a wide range of women's health issues. "Often, women and girls are left to fend for themselves and come up with alternative solutions to a basic level of care," says Molly. "I wanted to create a brand that reflected period care in a positive light. Looking ahead, we're asking: what's the next pain point that exists in the experience of life in a female body that we can address?"For more on the podcast, see the Beyond Capital Podcast website.
Today’s conversation is with Molly Hayward. A graduate of a tiny and feminist liberal arts school, Molly was inspired early on to pursue a career in social impact. Assuming she would end up in the nonprofit sector, her career took a twist after a trip to Africa inspired a deep desire to disrupt the female hygiene industry. Molly joins us to talk about feminism, social impact, and her personal experience innovating in an industry that hasn’t really evolved in decades. We’re talking tampons, women’s rights, and social entrepreneurship and it’s a conversation I think you’re going to love!

Meet Molly Hayward, the founder and CEO of Cora. Cora is a certified organic tampon company that provides menstrual products for girls in need around the world for every box of tampons that you buy. When Molly learned about the millions of girls around the globe who miss or drop out of school during their periods, she made it her mission to do something about it. We sat down with Molly to hear how she got Cora off the ground, managed to grow a company in a taboo area, and what advice she has for others.
This conversation was RICH with reality that a woman’s period, something that is natural, and divine, and LIFE GIVING, is the very thing that keeps us from education, opportunities, and basic rights throughout the world.
“Of course, I got my period today,” my bestie said. It was moving day with her two kiddos and there was no way she was going to find a tampon or pad among the boxes. Have you ever experienced something like this? From navigating pool parties in middle school to first-date surprises in your 20s, it can be such a pain to deal with Aunt Flo. Physical pain and discomfort, along with tampon and pad expenses, can amount to a pretty bad monthly experience. Periods are just one testament to how we girls and women are strong as hell. We are all meant to change the world… some people just get to working on it sooner than others. Today's guest, Molly Hayward has felt called to speak up for and take a stand against social injustices since she was just a little girl- and since then she has never stopped. Molly is the visionary founder of Cora, a lifestyle brand giving women a modern method for managing their periods. Cora gives body-conscious organic tampons and sustainable menstrual products to girls in underdeveloped countries for every package shipped, using her business and her voice as an opportunity to speak for women who don't have the chance to speak for themselves. Molly Hayward is changing (and in many instances creating) the dialogue about women and their periods- one that has been hushed beneath shame and cultural norms- on a global scale. I am honored to have her on the show today, so get ready- this conversation is going to change the way you see your body, your global sisters, and yourself. What our society does does not honor- is that moment.” “You don't devote your life to something for a paycheck; you do it because you know that it has meaning and it has greater purpose.” “Having severe pain, having severe discomfort, having a negative perspective on this experience is not natural. This is learned- this is culturally ingrained.” “Honoring my intuition and maintaining a positive perspective on everything is what moves this train forward.” LINKS MENTIONED: Start your subscription today by going to Cora.life! Molly Hayward is the visionary female founder of Cora, a San Francisco startup and disruptive consumer brand pioneering products that fit women’s lifestyles, prioritize their wellness, and empower women globally. Molly was the first entrepreneur in the now-trendy menstrual management space to establish a modern, healthy, socially conscious brand, presenting the issues of healthier products and women’s global social justice to the mainstream female consumer. In this episode, we discuss: -The story behind Cora: from idea to successful subscription business -How passion and perseverance disrupted the feminine product industry -The importance of removing unessential daily tasks as your business grows -How to position a product to enhance quality of life and foster a worldwide community -And so much more! Molly sought to create a mission driven company with Cora and has successfully helped women in developing countries continue their education during their monthly menstruation. Molly stresses, “Girls education and female empowerment is completely essential to economic development and poverty alleviation.” Most entrepreneurial opportunities begin when you yourself find a need not being served in the marketplace as Molly reminds, “It does start from a problem that you yourself experience.” From Molly’s experience, she shares that, “It’s critical to get started because it’s such a learn-as-you-go process.” Entrepreneurs tend to want to do it all and are eager as momentum starts to grow. Molly Hayward was searching for her next step when she travelled to Kenya and saw the devestating consequences of limited access to feminine hygiene products. Girls all over the world miss out on their educations and resort to unhealthy alternatives for tampons and pads. Period products in the US are no better: they have a host of chemicals in them that are linked to health problems. From these revelations, Cora was born: an all-organic tampon company that delivers right to your door, while giving sanitary products to girls in the developing world. Molly talks about building a socially conscious company that not only designs for the best user experience for her customers in the US, but also supports social enterprise in the developing world.

Molly is the visionary female founder of Cora. If you haven’t heard of Cora tampons before, Cora is a brand committed to providing healthy, modern menstrual products (i.e. tampons) in a completely new way. After travelling the world through many developing nations Molly saw how menstruation negatively affects girls and women living in low resource settings. Many of these girls are unable to afford menstrual products and have to resort to using old rags, newspaper, tree bark, and even pieces of old mattresses to manage their monthly bleeds. As you can imagine, using unhygienic methods such as these can cause infections, reproductive health problems, not to mention leaking. When Molly later learned that many of the menstrual products widely sold in North America use harmful chemicals and materials (i.e. pesticides, and other synthetic chemicals) that can cause endocrine disruption, cancer and other illnesses she decided to take matters into her own hands. Molly joined forces with her business partner Morgen and founded Cora. Not only are Cora tampons made from premium organic cotton (and free from harmful pesticides & synthetic materials), but Cora’s is on a mission to empower girls in developing nations. For every product sold, Cora provides sustainable menstrual products to girls in low resource settings. In today's episode, we expose the dangers of using conventional menstrual products, and we also have a much-needed discussion of the challenges that girls and women face in low resource settings. What it means for women and girls when they don't have access to the menstrual products they need to manage their periods. Topics discussed in today's episode Why women in low resource settings are managing their periods with old clothes, tree bark and pieces of old mattresses The reality for women and girls in low resource settings who are not able to attend school and work because of their periods What toxic chemicals are lurking in your menstrual products The link between synthetic materials like rayon and polyester and Toxic Shock Syndrome The health benefits of using 100% organic cotton tampons compared to the regular tampons you buy at the store Why women and girls in low resource settings lack access to menstrual products and what they use instead How the lack of access to menstrual products prevents girls from attending school during their period in many countries worldwide. Why menstrual products should be provided free of charge besides every toilet just like toilet paper How Cora has integrated the fundamental issue of access to menstrual products their company's mission How your purchase of Cora Tampons benefits girls in India and Kenya The connection between conventional menstrual products and health issues like painful periods, yeast infections, and bacterial vaginosis. The inspiration behind the design of Cora Tampons and accessories (i.e. say no to the obnoxious pink and purple packaging characteristic of conventional menstrual products) Why the design savvy carrying case and other accessories are not about hiding your period or being ashamed of it but instead are about embracing it and creating a positive experience of menstruation Why women who buy Cora tampons don't pay the tampon tax Connect with Molly You can connect with Molly on the Cora Website, on Facebook, and Twitter Resources mentioned Cora | Organic Tampons That Work FFP 078 | Lunapads & The Diva Cup | Sustainable, Eco-friendly & Healthy Menstrual Products | Madeleine Shaw & Suzanne Siemens FFP 065 | 6 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Xenoestrogen Exposure with Lisa | Fertility Friday Join the community! Hayward’s new venture, Cora, was launched early this year and with just four employees isn’t yet profitable.
