EPISODE 100 UFC 256 recap: Epic flyweight title fight, Do Bronx dominates El Cucuy, Kevin Holland is for real - 2:06 Q&A with John Nash - 20:25 There was a recent development in the UFC antitrust lawsuit. Brief us on what is going on with the suit. *Joint list: what is it? *What kind of unsealed docs might we expect? Some fighters were excluded from this class, specifically, Nate Quarry. Was there anyone else excluded and why was Nate? Dana came out and said the UFC has had its best year ever, that they’ve broken records. How have they thrived when other promotions are clearly struggling? Cub Swanson hopes for long term insurance for fighters. Is that a pipe dream or could it be reality? Anthony Johnson recently signed with Bellator after what was termed a “mutual parting of ways.” I’d imagine it all came down to the money. Do you think Bellator can offer more than the UFC? At first, everyone was passing on signing Yoel Romero, but now there is renewed interest from several promotions. Who can actually afford him? (recorded before the news of Yoel’s Bellator signing) Bellator and DAZN - What’s up with that relationship? Joshua vs Fury seems like the fight to make. Do you foresee any major hiccups in making that blockbuster? Thoughts on Zuffa Boxing never getting off the ground and whether Dana actually expected to amass all the top talent like he does in MMA Warner Brothers/HBO Max Deal and how it could affect people in your line of work? (note: unions) Remember, if you’re looking for us on SoundCloud or iTunes, we’re under the Bloody Elbow Presents name. Our compilation show is a deep dive with host, Trent Reinsmith, into the bigger news and goings on in MMA, both inside and outside the cage; presented with a critical, unbiased eye. Here is some detail on what’s going on here. The “regular” ‘C’mon Now MMA Podcast’ is a daily podcast of varying lengths, the concept of the podcast is to look at goings-on in MMA and dig below the surface of that news — it can be found here: cmonnow.substack.com/. This show is a compilation of some of the best topics covered over the past week. Here is a summary of the topics discussed, during the latest episode of the weekly “Best of” edition of the podcast. We hope you enjoy listening to the show and will continue to support it going forward. This week's topics include: 1. Dana White sure sounds like he is making an excuse for Conor McGregor re: sexual assault allegations. 2. UFC fighters could band together and support Dustin Poirier and make a stand against the UFC. It would be a small show of force, but it would be a show of force. 3. Why didn’t the ref use instant replay in the Mike Rodriguez vs. Ed Herman fight, because he could have and what happens next? 4. This is what Dana White wants and expects from the UFC media. How are you feeling if you’re Gerald Meerschaert? Probably not too good and maybe a little bit pissed off. 5. MMA media is focusing on the wrong thing when it comes to Nick Diaz. Overwhelmingly, the media is doing fantasy matchmaking instead of making the story about Nick Diaz the fighter. 6. American Top Team looks like it is going to be a COVID-19 hot spot for a while and that’s not bad luck, that’s bad decisions. 7. Brendan Schaub actually compared the UFC to Rosa Parks! 8. Bethe Correia, is she getting a UFC retirement fight because the promotion is having problems filling cards? 9. Are fighters who turn down fights for health and safety reasons getting time added to their UFC deals? 10. Why are so many fighters interested in fighting Nick Diaz? Nick Diaz who hasn’t won a fight since 2011? 11. UFC fighters should heed the words of retired fighter Nate Quarry. 12. Dana White lies about the NBA and MLB re: COVID-19 and he still needs to answer the question as to what is going on inside the UFC “bubble” as far as positive COVID-19 tests. Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado & Victor Rodriguez as they relive the UFC 91 PPV (pay-per-view) event this week, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. This week we feature the Nov. 15th, 2008, UFC 91 PPV: ‘Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar’ event, (last episode on a non-fight week we covered UFC Tuf 2 Finale: ‘Sanchez vs. Diaz’). This was a jam packed nine-fight card, eight of which were finishes, leaving only one Decision for the entire event. UFC 91 went down from the infamous MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event that night showcased one of the best fights of the year, when heavyweight standouts Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar battled it out for the World Heavyweight Championship, going only two of five rounds. Lesnar was still relatively new to the UFC at the time, after going 1-1 in the UFC against Frank Mir and Heath Herring, the WWE import received an unprecedented and controversial title shot against the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. ‘The Natural’ was entering the octagon on a two-fight win streak against the giant Lesnar, having won against both Gabriel Gonzaga and Tim Sylvia prior to this event. The rest of the card was one of the best of the year, with all nine bouts shown on the PPV broadcast. In the co-main event we watched Joe Stevenson quickly succumb to ‘KenFlo’. We also got to watch the exciting Jeremy Stephens deliver the ‘Knockout of the Night’ to Rafael dos Anjos, catch Dustin Hazelett with the ‘Submission of the Night’ against Tamdan McCrory and rounding it all out our ‘FOTN’ was actually not Lesnar/Couture but a battle that went the distance between Aaron Riley and Jorge Gurgel. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with MMA pioneer and fighter Carlos Newton. He is one of the many people working with those who have filed a class-action lawsuit against the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) alleging illegal market monopolization. This lawsuit was filed December 16 by fighters Cung Le, Nate Quarry, and Jon Fitch, who seek "to represent a class of similarly situated current and former UFC professional combatants". A virtually identical lawsuit was filed December 22 by fighters Dennis Hallman and Javier Vazquez, with more fighters expected to join these legal actions. The original suit is entitled Cung Le, Nathan Quarry, Jon Fitch, on behalf of themselves and all others similarly situated, Plaintiffs, v. Zuffa, LLC, d/b/a Ultimate Fighting Championship and UFC, Defendant. It can be read, in a PDF file here. We spoke with Carlos Newton, who attended the December 16 news conference in San Jose, California, announcing this lawsuit, by phone Tuesday. Although he is not a plaintiff in this suit, Carlos Newton played a key role behind the scenes for some time in getting this suit filed. "The suit that is being filed is a culmination of my hard work, and getting it filed was a great milestone and I was able to witness it," he said. "It's something I pretty much decided I was going to do a couple of years back, and I just had to figure out how I was going to do it. And getting Cung Le, Jon Fitch, and Nate Quarry to file that suit on behalf of all of us was the first step in doing that. I thank those guys for coming forward." Calling these three fighters "the face of this whole endeavor", he stated that the overall aim of this suit is to "fix this sport and get it on the right path on behalf of all the fighters in the industry." We discussed how other sports are not structured like MMA, how MMA promoters are not legally held "in check" like boxing promoters are, why UFC is the "fastest growing monopoly in the world", why public perception of this suit will be favorable to it, and much more.
