UFC 312 seemed to signal a community-wide awakening on Sean Strickland. After watching him go out with a whimper against Dricus Du Plessis (again!) it felt like everybody had kind of had enough of his bullshit. Sure, the visionaries on this podcast have been saying for AWHILE that what Strickland advertises prefight (a bloodthirsty maniac!) is quite different than what you actually get inside the cage (a careful point fighter, who came into this bout apparently having made like ZERO adjustments). After this one, however, it felt like fans knew it, other fighters knew it and even his own corner sort of seemed to know it. So, that feels like curtains for ya boi Sean. The irony is, of course, that Strickland actually DOES feel like a psychopathic lunatic in all other aspects of his life. Just ... not when he's fighting. Plus, damn you can't doubt DDP anymore. Except in his next fight against Khamzat Chimaev ... surely he'll lose that one ... right? Also, are Dana White and Ari Emanuel about to try to "fix" boxing by going after the Ali Act? Well, shit, of course they are! Why didn't we see that coming?  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

EPISODE 11: LISTENER Q & A How much were UFC fighters making from sponsors prior to the Reebok and Venom deals? I realize there is a lot of variation, but if you have a range or some examples, that would be helpful. And how much are they losing compared to what they were/are paid in the Reebok and Venom deals? Boxing promoters are apparently funneling money to sanctioning bodies through some form of lobbying. Can you explain how this works? Why do you think Bellator and PFL struggle financially? Is it just because the UFC has superior talent? If not, what are Bellator and PFL doing wrong that they can improve on? Do you see the influencer/YouTube star thing in boxing (and coming to MMA with Jake Paul) as a temporary thing or will it last a while or possibly even become permanent? Do you think it has the potential to create any lasting changes in MMA? Someone recently asked Dana about the low ratings his Power Slap league has gotten on TV. He said that Power Slap is more successful on social media and digital than on TV. He said that the clips do ten million views on TikTok, much more than other sports. Is there any way it can survive and even be profitable that way? Why do we WANT to use a sport that is a “structural disaster” as a benchmark for MMA in pushing the Ali Act expansion and why is it imperative that MMA fighters be paid their “free market value”? In order to have a successful sport, isn't it imperative that both the athletes and the fans are taken care of? In boxing, this is clearly not the case for the fans. So, why is it critical that a “free market” prevails in MMA with all of the issues this will likely create? People compare the UFC's revenue split (17-18%ish) with those of the major sports leagues (50%ish). Is this a fair comparison, considering the UFC's margins are 50% and profitability is critical to it because it is publicly traded company, whereas sports team franchises are generally bought for their asset appreciation as opposed to profitability? Instead of signing a washed Pettis for 800k a fight or million dollar tournaments, why doesn't Bellator try signing the whole UFC bantamweight division since some of those guys have name value yet make less than $100K/ fight. If they were able to get 60% of the top ten fighters, that would be a much bigger blow to the UFC. MTK alleged as Irish gangsters named as co-conspirators in lawsuit | Part 3

Going back to the genesis of the lawsuit, in brief, Boxrec refused to list the results arising from the Dubai Event mentioned in Part 2 that took place a year ago, and in this regard, the lawsuit claims "MTK owner Daniel Kinahan and his business partner Ahmed Seddiqi were personally involved in the decision and execution of conspiracy in collusion with the BoxRec Defendants to suppress the results at issue." In paragraph 222, it says with respect to the several events in question: "All the fighters that participated in the three promoter events at issue did their job." And then in 223: "They prepared to compete, risked their lives, only to have the result of their efforts arbitrarily excluded by a website acting as the final judge and jury, while the ABC cannot do anything." Followed by 224: "The ABC did nothing to intervene and resolve the issues related to the Event and Zimbabwe Event." And finally in 225: "The ABC did try to get BoxRec to enter the results of the Brazil Event, but BoxRec has refused to do anything. BoxRec has refused to enter the results regardless of the pleas made to it." In addition to libel and tortious conduct alleged in the lawsuit, and stated losses, as well as unfair business practices, discrimination and a civil conspiracy, we need to bring the RICO act by way of explanation because in paragraph 439: "The root cause of this action is BoxRec's refusal to list the April 10, 2021 Event and to record its results at the command of a widespread criminal enterprise engaged in a pattern of racketeering activity across State lines, a conspiracy to suppress Plaintiff Mendy and his company Lion Heart Boxing Productions as well as events he and his fighters are involved in, and a conspiracy to engage in racketeering activity involving numerous RICO predicate acts during the past ten (10) calendar years." And in paragraph 440: "The predicate acts alleged here cluster around not only the criminal acts of MTK Global and Kinahan, but also the criminal acts of ABC and various of its officers and directors." Critically, in paragraph 449. "This dispute arises from Defendant's (1) violation of the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act 18. In paragraph 450: "At the center of and the driver of the conspiracy is Mr. Daniel Kinahan, Mr. Kinahan's company MTK, and his UAE partner Ahmed Seddiqi, and their associates." Followed by "MTK, a Dubai, UAE, and British based company, holds itself out as the “biggest force in business of boxing” in its capacity as a boxing management and promotional company. MTK was co-founded and is in part owned and controlled by Mr. Daniel Kinahan, a noted member of Ireland's notorious Kinahan Cartel, also known as the Kinahan Organized Crime Group (“KOCG”) by law enforcement officials." Furthermore, it is alleged: "MTK and Mr. Kinahan do not possess a proper license or authority to perform either management or promotional services in the UAE or United States. MTK is not licensed in the UAE and the United States as a boxing manager or a boxing promoter. MTK, however, provides both manager services and promotion services in the UAE and the USA through proxies, which are prohibited under the Ali Act firewall provisions." Finally, it should be noted, as it is clearly explained in the lawsuit: "MTK was co-founded by Mr. Daniel Kinahan. Mr. Daniel Kinahan is known as the head of Kinahan Organized Crime Group (“KOCG”) in Ireland. The KOCG is allegedly responsible for several murders, drug trafficking, and money laundering. The KOCG is one of Europe's biggest drug cartels. Law enforcement experts believe that Mr. Daniel Kinahan started MTK to launder ill-gotten gains from drug trafficking. Mr. Daniel Kinahan is wanted for question by several law enforcement agencies due to the murderous activities of the KOCG. On or about September 16, 2018, the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) banned Mr. Kinahan and roughly twenty-six other members of the KOCG from entering America due to narco-terrorism concerns."

EPISODE 19 Name some MMA fighters that are on their way to or already have generational wealth. Bonus if you leave Conor McGregor out of the conversation. Moving forward, now that the ESPN deal has netted both the UFC and ESPN such lucrative results, is there a possibility we see another megastar rise like McGregor, or is the UFC stomping out the need for such PPV magnets? Francis Ngannou's situation is a tricky one. Discuss the finer details of contract extensions for champions and why Ngannou not signing a new deal might not matter in the long run because he's still the champion. Can he give up the belt to get out from under? Georges St. Pierre hasn't fought since 2017, but the UFC has managed to put the brakes to a proposed charity boxing match he wanted to do. How long do they have control over him in that regard? Is there a statute of limitations on his contract? We've discussed unions and/or associations many times and have come to the unfortunate conclusion that fighters are selfish creatures by necessity because of the UFC's stranglehold on the entire market. Is there some other way outside unionization that could make their position more tenable? More and more fighters are airing their extreme financial woes including Francis Ngannou, who stated that he had to borrow money to stay afloat. The UFC blames the media, but to my knowledge, the media isn't telling these fighters to get on the mic and say these things in interviews. Will any of these horrible stories of near destitute scenarios be enough to draw attention from govt. institutions to make a more fair and just environment? You mentioned that Joe Silva used to basically hold fighters hostage to their contracts by offering fights while they were under commission suspension. Please explain that and if that's even legal. And by commission suspension, would that apply to USADA suspensions or strictly the AC suspensions? What are your thoughts on this new World Fight League that a network of former promoters, former NFL, NBA and MMA athletes are putting together? Does this have IFL written all over it? Do you see any red flags already? If somehow we get to see the Ali Act instituted in MMA, give us an idea of what that would look like. What would change? Are there any updates on the antitrust suit? Has any new documentation been revealed? Dana White said that Fury-Wilder 3 was what boxing needed, as though the sport is somehow in the toilet. What is the health of boxing like right now? Is there trouble on the horizon, or is Dana just spinning his wheels to make the UFC look better? EPISODE 96 Weekend recap: RDA beats Felder, Khaos reigns, Bud blasts Brook - 2:22 TWITTER MAILBAG - 19:12 1. Any chance we see crowd events in the middle of next year? (Kenta Thuesen) 2. I heard Joe Rogan refute Luke Thomas’ criticism of UFC fighter pay by emphasizing the expense of running the promotion. Would Nash be able to compare fighter pay as a percentage to general expenses and overall profit? Seems like UFC apologists are just saying ~20% is all that the UFC could pay even if it’s not ideal. (Combat Artist) 3. I’m always amazed the UFC can get away with putting on PPV cards like 255 with absolutely no star power or appeal outside of the hardest of hardcore fans...I know John has spoke about this in the past, but a refresher on how little PPVs the UFC needs to sell for these type of events to be profitable would be cool, thanks. (James Lowson) 4. How major is it that Biden won since Trump and Dana are buddies? With the change in the Labor department coming in January, could we see a renewed effort in classifying MMA fighters as employees versus independent contractors? (Mark from Wombat Sports) 5. Several reports have Zuffa Boxing starting Dec. 11. Since boxing is under the Ali Act, how do you think Zuffa will handle the contracts? (Mark from Wombat Sports) 6. How are fighters benefitting from the extension of the EA UFC deal through 2030? How does the election of Biden affect the Ali Expansion Act initiative? (Chris from Jersey) 7. Has there been any push back on Nevada no longer releasing fighter purses (MMA or Boxing) and does it look like other states’ ACs will follow suit? (Finley Beaton) 8. Andrew Yang has made it clear he wants to take on UFC with labor laws and Ali Act among other things. How realistic do you think is a significant change coming in the stronghold UFC has on the market if such new legislation and laws are passed? (NatrajMMA) 9. What can fans do differently to encourage this conversation within the wider MMA community? It feels like the only way to get the fighters to engage with it is to have fan backing so they can talk freely about pay without fear for retribution from the promotions. (Jordie Weeds) 10. Since Biden has won the election and Andrew Yang is pretty much set to be a member of his cabinet do you see any meaningful full change happening regarding MMA fighter pay and more specifically an increased emphasis on pay transparency? Cung Le joins the show in the wake of multiple UFC athletes calling foul in regards to how they have been treated and compensated by the company. Cung has long been an outspoken voice for change in the world of MMA and is part of a class-action lawsuit against the UFC as well as a member of the MMA Fighters Association. The former Sanshou and Strikeforce champion parted ways with the UFC in 2014 following a myriad of soured business dealings with the company and Le quickly made his complaints public. Being one of the original dissenting voices in the MMA world, Cung Le, as with many others, believes that the only way for MMA athletes to be properly compensated is through the Ali Act. Cung gives us his perspective on the kind of change the sport needs for the betterment of all the athletes while ensuring a positive future for the next generation. No Holds Barred: Rob Maysey on Ali Act for MMA and Growth of MMAFA

No Holds Barred with Eddie Goldman

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2016 81:03

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Rob Maysey of the Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association (MMAFA). We spoke with him by phone Friday. Among the many activities of the MMAFA is the fight to expand the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 2000 and enacted then, to cover all professional combat sports, including MMA. You can view and sign the online petition to expand the Muhammad Ali Act here. The rebellion of fighters against unfair contracts and treatment has grown tremendously in recent years, entering a new stage where numerous fighters are today publicly speaking out for change and in support of the MMAFA. These issues and the activities of the MMAFA have been covered for many years on No Holds Barred. "I'm not sure if your show was the first or not. It was definitely one of the first. I think it was way back in 2008 or so," Rob Maysey said about when we first spoke on this show. "Since that time, as you know and have seen, the MMAFA has grown by leaps and bounds. You're now seeing numerous, highly prominent fighters come out in support of the MMAFA. They're supporting our petition to have the Ali Act expanded to cover all combat sports. They filed the antitrust lawsuit currently pending against Zuffa. And they generally are the reason you're seeing other fighters now voice complaints. For years that wasn't the case. "So when I started doing this, when I was coming on your show years ago, I would say things I knew were true, because I was getting it from the fighters and their agents, and people just didn't believe it because the fighters weren't yet saying it themselves. "Now you're just seeing what we knew all along, because the fighters are saying it in public. That's the biggest difference. And as they get more comfortable voicing their story to the public, you'll see more and more fighters doing it. That's something we work on every single day." We discussed many topics, including: how boxers have many more contract protections than MMA fighters and earn a much larger percentage of the overall revenue from their events; how UFC adapted the business model of WWE to a real sport; how the structure of MMA gives promoters control over titles rather than independent bodies; the differences between the MMAFA and what a union would do, including various Johnny-come-lately outfits which have popped up following the recent UFC sale; how there is a need to create the mechanics of competition in MMA to serve the fighters' interests; the effect or lack thereof on all this of that UFC sale; the bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress for expanding the Ali Act; the important use of social media by fighters and fans; the role of MMA journalists; and much, much more.
