But lest you think we're going to be talking about the three or four songs before a sermon or our preferred style of music, let me assure you this conversation isn't just for people who can carry a tune or for those who know how to navigate their Apple music ap! Frankly, our tendency to associate worship solely with music is like limiting ourselves to one food group for every single meal for the rest of our lives – I love Tex Mex y'all, but if I had to eat chips and queso three times a day, every day, for the rest of my life it would be sadly and unnecessarily reductive! In the Christian context, worship is so much wider and deeper and more comprehensive than a song list or a musical genre. Case in point, listen to what one of our favorite theologians here at BPT – Dr. N.T. Wright – says about the centrality of worship: All kingdom work is rooted in worship. Or, to put it the other way around, worshipping the God we see at work in Jesus is the most politically charged act we can ever perform. Christian worship decares that Jesus is Lord and that therefore, by strong implication, nobody else is. What's more, it doesn't just declare it as something to be believed, like the fact that the sun is hot or the sea wet. It commits the worshipper to allegiance, to following this Jesus, to being shaped and directed by him. Worshipping the God we see in Jesus orients our whole being, our imagination, our will, our hopes, and our fears away from the world where Mars, Mammon, and Aphrodite (violence, money, and sex) make absolute demands and punish anyone who resists. It orients us instead to a world in which love is stronger than death, the poor are promised the kingdom, and chastity (whether married or single) reflects the holiness and faithfulness of God himself. Acclaiming Jesus as Lord plants a flag that supersedes the flags of our nations, however “free” or “democratic” they may be. In other words, WORSHIP is the fruit and fuel of our faith, the flagpole we rally around as those who've been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Worship is the very essence of our spiritual DNA. Just as a half dozen and six communicate the same number of eggs, to have faith in Jesus Christ and to be a worshipper should be synonymous. Worship isn't simply a verb for the musically inclined among us, it should be the passionate preoccupation of God's people. Okay, as you can tell we're pretty fired up today so you'd better grab a cup of something caffeinated and your Bible – unless you're listening to this while simultaneously trying to figure out how to increase the incline on the treadmill at the gym you just joined because you're determined to ditch the Spanx in 2025 – and come hang out on the porch with us for some genuine, digital community and hopefully some real encouragement. We're really grateful to get to spend this time hanging out with y'all. Save on Dwell hereLearn More about Upward Sports here
On this episode of the FTC Podcast, Jared visits with Dr. Scotty Smith, one of the spiritual fathers of gospel-centrality, to talk about his early influences and ministry, pastoring early CCM artists, and how to stay focused on grace through decades of shifting cultural distractions.
Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology is like getting to eat dessert before the entree because Alli and I get to sit down with my long-term spiritual mentor, Scotty Smith. Scotty became my pastor when I moved to Nashville in my early twenties - almost forty years ago. He was also the adjunct professor at Covenant Seminary and shepherded me through a master of theological studies during my first seminary stint back in my thirties. He's been my pastor, professor and spiritual big brother for three and a half decades now and getting to sit at his feet and learn more about Jesus remains one of God's great gifts in my life! And while Scotty is one of the most brilliant theologians I've had the privilege of learning from, he's also very transparent about how he spent the first half of his adult life accruing and disseminating biblical data because he didn't know how to have relational intimacy with God, much less anybody else. However, our Creator Redeemer is so kind and mercifully pursued Scotty's heart until he was finally able to experience the deep emotional healing he'd been desperate for since his mom died when he was in high school. I really believe the next forty-five minutes are going to usher in tangible hope for some of you precious saints who subconsciously put a fence around your heart after childhood trauma too. So many of us want to experience deeper intimacy with God and others, we just aren't sure how to go about dismantling our self-protective fences. Today's going to be an awesome kind of group-demo-day, y'all so please grab your favorite summer beverage – mine is sparkling water mixed with strawberry Crystal light and freshly squeezed lime – and your Bible, unless both of your hands are now occupied rummaging through the utensil drawer trying to locate your lime squeezer – and come hang out on the porch with us. We're so glad we get to spend this time leaning into God's embrace with you.Join the free Hidden Online Bible Study hereSponsored by BetterHelp. Save 10% at BetterHelp.com/LisaHarper

Ruth 1:6-22
Discussion Questions:Scripture MemoryOur church-wide scripture memory this year will be selected passages from Ephesians. This is a great opportunity to dive deep into the goodness God has for us from Paul's letter.Sermon OverviewThe main idea of this week's sermon was: knowing God is a work of God, so growing in knowing God requires praying to God.Ice Breaker· When you pray for Christian friends or family members, what kind of things do you tend to pray about?[1]Digging Deeper Read Ephesians 1:15-23. · This passage teaches us that those who know God are marked by faith and love. What are some of the specific evidences of faith and love you see in your brothers and sisters in your Gospel Community? Take this opportunity to “encourage one another,” by pointing out specific evidences of faith and love you see in their lives. Take this opportunity to thank God for these evidences of his grace. · To know God better, who will need to be at work in us? (see vs. 17)[2] · Most of this section is Paul praying. What does Paul pray for? How are his prayer requests similar or different from the prayers you normally hear?[3] · Paul already knows that his readers know Jesus and love him. Why would he keep praying for them to know even more about all that they have in Jesus? Think of several possible reasons.[4] · At the end of verse 18, we might expect Paul to say: “the riches of our glorious inheritance in heaven.” What does Paul say, and why is this surprising?[5] · In verse 18, Paul (who is in prison, see 3:1) is teaching us to pray not for our circumstances to be altered but for our hearts' view of our circumstances to be altered. Why do we find this hard? What would be great to see life this way?[6] · How should verse 20 excite us about the kind of power that is at work in and for us?[7] The following truths are found in this passage. Spend a minute reviewing them quietly. Then, use them as inspiration to pray for one another.[8] · Jesus is my resurrected savior, proof of God's immeasurable power toward us who believe (vv. 19-20)· Jesus is my ascended Advocate, representing me from his seat at God's right hand in heaven (v. 20)· Jesus is ruler of all things, controlling all other authorities, powers, and people of great name (v. 21)· Jesus is King of the ages, controlling everything about my future both in this life and the age to come (v. 21)· Jesus is the victor over evil, able to trample beneath his feet any evil that threatens me (v. 22)· Jesus is the head of the church, which he cares for as his body (vv. 22-23)· Jesus is the filler of all things, so that when I am filled by him I can be a blessing throughout the world (v. 23)Prayer Requests➔ ➔ [1] Ephesians: Your Place in God's Plan, Richard Coekin, 13.[2] Ephesians: Your Place in God's Plan, Richard Coekin, 14.[3] Ephesians: The Love We Long For by Scotty Smith, 15.

Episode 733: Everything about planting screams, “Emergency!” Host Ed Stetzer talks with Scotty Smith and Adam Muhtaseb about the importance of taking the long view on church planting.
Last summer my wife, Lois, heard a radio interview with Barbara Miller Juliani, who told about growing up in a Christian family, rejecting her parents' Christianity, and joyfully reconciling with her parents and with the Lord. Lois bought the book that Barbara wrote with her father – Come Back, Barbara. When I realized that Barbara's father was Jack Miller – professor at Westminster Theological Seminary, founder of World Harvest Mission (now Serge), and a mentor of Scotty Smith -- I reached out to Scotty because I had heard him talk about Jack Miller in reverential tones for nearly as long as I had known Scotty. One of Jack Miller's sons said the story “is not just the story of a prodigal daughter, but also of a father who was acting like the elder son. Dad's willingness to first take the beam out of his eye transformed him into the kind of dad a prodigal would want to return to.” Jack Miller died 26 years ago and cannot be with us in person. Scotty will be Jack's stand-in to tell us the story of a father's pursuit of a prodigal daughter.

This Lord's Day, we conclude our Mission Conference. The theme of the conference has been "The Word Made Flesh," which is a reference to Jesus' incarnation from John 1:14. The Word that was with God, that was God, became flesh. The Word became human, which means the Word became touchable. The Word became vulnerable, even killable as one commentator put it. Think of it. The eternal God who created all things and holds all things together by the power of His Word became vulnerable...for you and for me. And he calls us as his disciples to live in such a way that bears witness to his incarnation, to make real, to make "fleshy" the transforming power of the gospel to redeem and renew life in Him. Scotty Smith, our conference speaker, will help us flesh that out (pun intended) as he preaches on the heartbeat, the hands, and the hope of Incarnational Living from Philippians 2:1-11. As we gather for worship, our opening hymn points us not to Jesus' first coming, but to his second coming, when we, who see things dimly now, will see with eternal clarity. It is one of Charles Wesley's most beloved hymns, "Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending." This hymn gives us a sense of God's transcendence, his otherness like few can. As we transition to the Acclamation of Praise, we see not God's transcendence, but his immanence, his closeness, and nearness, as we sing verses 1 and 3 of "How Deep The Father's Love For Us." Our final hymn reminds us that we bring nothing to Christ but our need of him. There is no good work or service that renders us merit before God. It is Christ alone that we stand before Him. If you'd like to do some reading prior to the service, I'd recommend Colossians 1:15-20 and John 1:1-18.

During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology, I have the HUGE privilege of introducing you to one of my living heroes of faith – the man who introduced me to grace. I've been attending church since I was in utero and have been reading the Bible – or having it read to me - from my earliest memories but the concept of grace – of God's unmerited favor - was always like wet soap to me – it was hard to hang on to. Until I moved to Nashville at the age of 21 and began attending a church led by a Birkenstock wearing pastor named Scotty Smith. It's not hyperbolic to say that the Holy Spirit used Scotty to create a seismic shift in my heart toward Jesus – the long season I enjoyed as a member of his church, and ultimately as one of the students he mentored at Covenant Theological Seminary is what built the spiritual scaffolding that supports my belief system, as well as the intimacy I now have with Jesus. I love and respect this man so much that if I had a son, I'd probably name him Scotty – of course, that implies getting married and having this old jar of clay restored back to its pre-menopausal vitality, so I digress! The bottom line is, I'm beyond happy to have Pastor and Professor Scotty Smith here today so please grab a cup of coffee and your Bible, unless you're driving or shelling peas of course, and come hang out on the porch with us. All of life matters to Jesus. Dr. Scotty Smith talks about the message of love grace from 1John and how it counters the message of the law and legalism. Dr. Scotty Smith's book is "1 John: Relying on the Love of God"
"I don't know of a more discombobulating, imprisoning power on the earth than shame. To me, shame is personalized demonization." "Here's the good news: When you really get the proper diagnosis, Grace becomes all the sweeter. You're never going to shock the Father. You may know 4% of your sin - He's taken on the other 96% as well." We've got another Pirate Monk roundtable with Nate, Chris, Rob and Justin on the topic of emotional triggers, followed by an interview with a man who played a key role in the founding of the Samson Society - Scotty Smith. In this episode, Ciara and Jessi wrap up their discussion on idol worship and how Christians accidentally fall into violations of the second commandment. Even when we know better, it's hard to resist the temptation to make our material possessions the center of our worlds. Worse yet, the culture has turned loving ourselves into an even more appealing form of idolatry, that's sometimes too subtle to even recognize. Paul warns believers not to become lovers of self or of money, and yet, we've all stumbled into this sin. But, praise God, He gives us a way out.
