https://www.paypal.me/Truelifepodcast?locale.x=en_USWhile working as a pediatric nurse in October 2016, I suffered both a traumatic brain (TBI) and whiplash injury to my neck. Due to this, I have been unable to work as a nurse ever since. My injury also comes with some debilitating symptoms, which include cognitive issues, chronic headaches, and severe neck pain. Cannabis helps alleviate my pain, bringing it from a 7/10 daily pain and down to a more tolerable 2 and 3. Other symptoms of my injury include impacted balance/coordination, visual impairment, and depression/anxiety.I live in Buffalo, NY and I actually travel to Canada every few weeks in order to access legal Canadian cannabis and medicate; it is my medical hiatus if you will. As I have a Canadian prescription for cannabis, I travel to Ontario where I have an address. While I do have a prescription in the state of NY and CA, the quality of Canadian cannabis is unmatched, especially the strains available to me through my Licensed producer. It aids with all my symptoms above and has truly given me a quality of life back. While I have been prescribed numerous, pharmaceutical drugs to treat my injury, most have had severely negative and damaging effects on me physically and emotionally, while cannabis helped me come of off these horrible medications.I had been a recreational consumer prior to my injury, but it is only since beginning to learn about cannabinoids and terpenes have I really been able to maximize and harness the benefits of my cannabis intake.https://www.nikkiandtheplant.org/http://linkedin.com/in/nikki-lawley https://www.paypal.me/Truelifepodcast?locale.x=en_US

Nikki, a NY state resident, has always been a proud and diligent worker. She's served as an HVAC filtration salesperson, later starting her own company, then as a casino dealer, and most recently, as a pediatric nurse. She had suffered two traumatic brain injuries during her younger years, but it was the third TBI that suddenly changed everything. In a heartbeat, her life changed from one of optimism, vibrancy, enthusiasm, confidence, and extroversion, to one of constant pain, withdrawal, depression, and hopelessness. While trying to help administer a routine vaccine to a young boy, Nikki was thrown against the wall, suffering a significant TBI and cervical instability in the process.  Nikki's TBI has caused cognitive deficiencies, confusion, memory loss, anxiety, and pain. She found herself unable to work, unable to interact with others, and in a very dark place. None of the numerous traditional medications she's tried helped, and if fact, their ghastly side effects left her even worse off. She had long since reached the end of her rope, when, on a whim, figuring she had nothing more to lose, she turned to cannabis.  Little did she know that this seemingly mundane weed would save her life and restore her hope. Cannabis helps Nikki alleviate her pain, reducing it from unbearable levels to more manageable ones, and empowering to her to live her life again. Nikki has struggled to find the type of cannabis that works best for her and to have legal access to her medicine. In fact, she regularly travels from Buffalo, NY to Ontario, Canada for legal access to cannabis to medicate herself. Nikki's experiences with cannabis have filled her with a passion to learn more about the science behind the plant to advocate for patients everywhere, and to expose others to the wonders of cannabis. She has shared her story and journey with many, she is a member of multiple online support groups for individuals that have suffered head injuries, she serves as an active voice in the cannabis communities, and she hopes to use her story to inspire others to never give up.  You can find more information about her journey at https://linktr.ee/Nikkilawley On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, see how one health care professional changed her opinion of cannabis from a “bad” recreational activity to a lifesaving drug free of side effects and negative reactions. Nikki found medical marijuana in Nevada, and ever since, she's been advocating for a better TBI patient experience through medicinal cannabis. Now, she's her own advocate and an advocate for others to stand up for their health, find their right strand, and reclaim their personalities and lives. What You'll Learn:  How Nikki gets quality cannabis from Canadian producers  What advocacy work Nikki is doing, and how sharing her story is helping others find their way Why Nikki's life changed so drastically after her third TBI And so much more! The decades-long War on Drugs campaign in America has been incredibly successful at spreading harmful rhetoric and shaping people's perception of cannabis use. The resulting prejudice can often discourage folks from seeking out medical cannabis as an option, and can even affect state legislature, forcing patients to overcome unnecessary and prohibitive obstacles in order to receive the treatment they need.Today on the show we welcome Nikki Lawley, a Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor, and founder of NIKKI and the Plant, an advocacy group for medical marijuana use, with a special focus on helping women who have suffered a TBI. We talk with Nikki about her life-altering TBI, her previous prejudices around cannabis use, and how her journey led her to the founding of NIKKI and the Plant. After being prescribed over 60 medications and seeing dozens of healthcare professionals, Nikki finally found relief and a reason to be optimistic when she tried medical cannabis. In our conversation, Nikki shares how difficult it was transitioning from her role as a nurse, and health care provider, to being a patient. She explains how the state legislature in New York prevented her from accessing the medication she needed, as well as how difficult it was navigating the world of medical cannabis and finding a product that reliably worked for her.We delve into Nikki's advocacy work, her approach to addressing people's prejudices, and why she is dedicated to changing the narrative around medical cannabis use. Nikki's story is deeply inspirational, and we are honored to have had her on the show. It's an imported reminder of the real-world impact that medical marijuana and advocacy can have on the lives of everyday individuals!Key points from this episode:An introduction to cannabis use for traumatic brain injuries (TBI).Some of the early evidence on the positive effects that cannabis could have for TBIs.An introduction to Nikki, how she received a TBI, and her difficult journey from nurse to patient. How Nikki found medical cannabis and how it transformed her recovery.Nikki's previous opinion of cannabis and how her worldview was shaped by the "War on Drugs" rhetoric.Nikki's first dispensary experience and why the initial results were so frustrating. Why Nikki's unique digestive system affects her ability to absorb fat-soluble products effectively. Why this hampered the efficacy of the cannabinoid products she was using at the time. How Nikki's friends in Canada, and her support network, helped her persevere in her journey with medical cannabis. The founding of NIKKI and the plant as an advocacy and awareness initiative. How their mission focuses on helping women with TBIs.Why Nikki remains motivated in helping and empowering patients to institute change in the medical industry. How Nikki approaches naysayers and people's prejudice against cannabis use.The Americans for Safe Access segment: the compliance, certification, and training side of ASA's offerings to the industry.Links mentioned in today's episode:NIKKI and the plantNikki Lawley on LinkedInNikki Lawley on InstagramNikki Lawley on FacebookHeather Despres on LinkedInCannigma

Ok I don't want to say too much about  Nikki Lawley before we jump into the interview, but this was kind of out of the normal realm of interviews for us. The reason that we wanted to talk to Nikki is because she is really a good example of why Cannabis needs to be legalized and the challenges the criminalization of cannabis has brought to people who simply need to use it as medicine, kind of a fuel for why the cannabis industry needs to move forward. Before we jump into it  we would like to give a shout out to: Vessel Brand Camino innovative cannabis confectionsNikki & the Plant Nikkiandtheplant.orgNikki is passionate and infinitely interested in the benefits of cannabis, many of which are still being researched. She is determined to help patients find access to medical cannabis products that provide them relief, in the hopes that no one has to suffer what she has.  Nikki commented, "cannabis should be offered as a treatment for TBI / Concussion symptoms"https://www.instagram.com/nikkiandtheplant/Nikki and the Plant (facebook.com)

While trying to help administer a routine vaccine to a young boy, Nikki was thrown against the wall, suffering a significant TBI and cervical instability in the process in 2016. Nikki's TBI has caused cognitive deficiencies, confusion, memory loss, anxiety, and pain. She found herself unable to work, unable to interact with others, and in a very dark place. None of the numerous traditional medications she's tried helped, and if fact, their ghastly side effects left her even worse off.She had long since reached the end of her rope, when, on a whim, figuring she had nothing more to lose, she turned to cannabis. Www.Nikkiandtheplant.org   Episode brought to you by Integrated Brain Centers Support the podcast on Patreon: www.patreon.com/amyzellmer
