After releasing a handful of mixtapes, he was discovered by Kanye West in 2010. That same year he signed with West's G.O.O.D. Music compilation Cruel Summer. In 2013, he earned numerous co-writing credits on West's album Yeezus then, in 2014, G.O.O.D. Music released Black Hystori Project, his conceptual mixtape which honored African-American history with tracks like "Huey," "Coretta," and "Basquiat." A second volume, subtitled N.A.A.C.P., followed in 2015. The Stoned Mountain Playlist, a brief collaboration with publicist/producer Jonathan Hay, appeared in 2016. Cyhi's long-delayed debut studio album, No Dope on Sundays, finally arrived in November of 2017, featuring appearances by West, Pusha T, 2 Chainz, Estelle, and many others.Nearly five years after the release of his debut studio album, CyHi returns with his new project EGOT the EP.The four-track EP contains the previously released single “Tears” featuring Jacquees, as well as new songs featuring Baby Rose (“Help Me God”) and Big Bank Black (“Slide”). How does the spiritual coexist with the secular? We discuss how Southern Hip-Hop artists investigate their spiritual practices through religion, acts of faith and their music. Plus, we get a visit from the South’s favorite Pastor. The episode starts with a look at the role of faith in the South, and the extent to which the hip-hop generation does (or doesn’t) feel welcome. Listening to Killer Mike and UGK, Cyhi the Prynce’s “No Dope on Sunday,” No Malice, Lecrae’s “Can’t Stop Me Now (Destination),” and more, we explore the idea of songs and verses as prayers to make sense of the world. Then, we talk to our good, good friend Lee Hale, a religion reporter who’s reported himself into a faith crisis. And we get story-time with Pastor Troy. We chop it up about the beginnings of his rap career, his controversial song “Vice Versa,” and his relationship with the original Pastor Troy: his father.

On this episode we welcome producer duo Nate & Charity to the show. This talented up and coming production team dropped some gems on us that all up and coming producers could benefit from. They discuss:Being from different parts of Texas and eventually linking up after being in the same beat battlesWhat there work flow is like as a production teamWhat it’s like being a duo where each producer producers in a different DAW (Machine vs. Ableton)Moving from Texas to Atlanta to pursue better opportunitiesWorking with CyHi The Prynce on the critically acclaimed “No Dope on Sundays” Album and how they landed their placement on thereCharity specifically discusses navigating in the industry as a female producerWhat’s next for Nate & Charity?Follow them:@nate_coop@charityevaughnAlso discussed this episode:Streaming pay! After rapper Nipsey Hustle shared his streaming income numbers, the entire industry has been buzzing. Should you only put your music on Tidal since they pay the most? Should listeners subscribe to Tidal as he said? WLPWR and Brian Onrea sort this out. Also sorted out is the concept of producer payment rights and how much you should charge for your beats. This is in respose to Jermaine Dupri’s recent Breakfast Club interview where he talked about a producer selling a beat for $200 that became a huge hit. What’s the issue here? It gets broken all the way down! Make sure you share this podcast and follow us!@FreeGamePodcast@WLPWR@TristinBlake@Brian OnreaThe podcast was recorded at Gray Matter Studios in Atlanta, GA and mixed by Joey Stanca @dreamsonparade for @checkmatecreative
