In the world of cult bands, Memphis power pop band Big Star reigns mythically. And while the former teen heartthrob Alex Chilton might be the first member who springs to mind, guitarist and songwriter Chris Bell figures heavily in the band's tragic saga. In this episode of The Spindle, John Howard and guest co-host Jason P. Woodbury drop the needle on Bell's 1978 single "I Am the Cosmos," b/w "You And Your Sister." Released in scant quantities by Car Records, an imprint founded by Chris Stamey of The dB's, the single balances Bell's mysticism with flesh and blood heartbreak. #623 - Heidi Hyatt Heidi Hyatt is a special guest on The Paul Leslie Hour. It's a great honor to welcome Heidi Hyatt on The Paul Leslie Hour. She keeps the legacy of her husband the late Walter Hyatt going, through King Tears Music which she heads. She manages the catalog of Walter Hyatt and his influential Uncle Walt's Band. Uncle Walt's Band included Walter Hyatt, Champ Hood and David Ball. They made some truly exceptional recordings with unique songs and influenced some renowned artists: Marcia Ball, Lucinda Williams and some of our past guests: Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Walter Hyatt sadly passed away in 1996 and the following year Austin City Limits broadcast a tribute featuring Lyle Lovett, Willis Alan Ramsey, David Ball, Champ Hood, Marcia Ball, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Junior Brown, David Halley, Allison Moorer and Shawn Colvin. On October 1, 2021 Omnivore Records is releasing the 11 songs from that ACL broadcast on CD and digital. Also included will be songs that didn't get aired and some previously unreleased Walter Hyatt recordings. The release is entitled "Mighty Fine: An Austin City Limits Tribute to Walter Hyatt." Heidi Hyatt makes a great interview, and we hope you enjoy. Do yourself a favor and check out the album. You'll be very glad you did. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.

Today on WASTOIDS, a legend of recorded history: Van Dyke Parks. His name appears in the liner notes of so many of our favorite albums—LPs by the Beach Boys, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Joanna Newsom, Grizzly Bear, and many more—and to boot, he's one of pop music's great storytellers and raconteurs. In 1995, he released a collaborative album with Brian Wilson called Orange Crate Art. Last year, to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the folks at Omnivore Records reissued the album along with rarities and instrumental takes.  VDP grew up in Mississippi, but travel has long been a fixture in his discography and Orange Crate Art found him and Wilson exploring the idyllic myths and hidden corners of the California Dream, evoking the sensations Van Dyke felt as a young kid first visiting to appear in a movie, The Swan with Grace Kelly, in 1955. Van Dyke took a few minutes out of his day to join us here on WASTOIDS to discuss the record, and, because we can't help but ask about it: we also talk about his appearance on Twin Peaks in 1990. This is WASTOIDS, thanks for listening. Give us a call to discuss the California Dream or whatever other weird tales you have to share. 1-877-WASTOIDS. Leave us a message and you just might hear it in an upcoming WASTOIDS broadcast.

Skinny dippin' in the oil o' joy.....Set 1 opening up the card game with a royal flush in my books! NRBQ from their very first self titled LP just re-released for the first time ever on vinyl by Omnivore Records and baby they nailed it! Covering Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody". Country Music Hall of Famer sweetens the pot with "Baby, I Just Want You". Helping out Floyd is Cajun God Link Davis! Davis is a triple-threat cat....fiddle, sax, harmonica and he can sing! We'll hear more from Mr. Davis in the next round....Horace Andy stokes the pot with his version of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine"...someone get me a spliff, mon! Mark Oliver Everett AKA The Eels is "Kinda Fuzzy" from all the action..... Set 2: Link Davis gets to sit at the "big pot table" and immediately bluffs with "Don't You Big Shot Me"...The Replacements won't fold and raise with "I Will Dare"....you know when your playin' poker with the big boys it pays to blend in like a "Chamelion" like Herbie Hancock from his genre breaking LP HEADHUNTERS. The Onion Radio News chimes in with a timely report on North Korea....Country Joe can't stand the tension and declares..."Hold On It's Comin"...Jessie White takes a break from his gig as a Maytag repairman and with his Jungle Drums declares...."We got the tenor sax, guitar and drums...we're all set to make a R&R record....all right now let's hear it" Set 3: After the game everyone sits back and partakes in their stimulous of choice...I'm guessin' that The Pretty Things' "Walking Through My Dreams" is hinting at Dr. Albert Hoffman's chemical compound LSD...remember that the good Dr. was the first. We all know how Willie Nelson relaxes so we played his NORMAL radio ad. Rosetta Howard best known for the first version of "If Your A Viper" plays a different song with The Harlem Hamfats.."Candy Man". And nodding out with The Jim Kweskin Jug Band from a soundtrack of my childhood..."If Your A Viper" offa their 1967 LP GARDEN OF JOY. Well that's it for this week my friends....I'm leaving you in the good hands of Canada's Mother Earth and "Soul Sacrifice"

Cindy Lee Berryhill is a singer-songwriter and a Los Angeles native who has released 6 acclaimed albums and many compilations since Who’s Gonna Save The World? (Rhino/Capitol) debuted in October 1987. She has worked with Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye on several albums. Berryhill coined the name Antifolk which she and her friends, including Beck, called their disenfranchised music on the lower east side of Manhattan, and the name/genre continues on today with young artists coming out of Europe. You may have seen her and her son (by late husband Crawdaddy Magazine founder, Paul Williams) starring in that CoveredCalifornia health-care commercial, if you were on the west coast. In fact the reason she was cast in the commercial was due her very popular blog about caring for her ailing husband; Beloved Stranger. Her seventh album, The Adventurist will be out on Omnivore Records spring 2017.

Sam Phillips has released eight critically-acclaimed studio records, she’s scored the music for the Gilmore Girls TV series, and she acted alongside Bruce Willis in Die Hard With a Vengeance. But, of all the great work she’s put out, many people continue to gravitate toward her 1994 album Martinis & Bikinis, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Performance. Produced by then-husband T-Bone Burnett, the album is a mix of gritty guitars, muscled drums, and Beatle-soaked harmonies.Although not a commercial smash, it regularly makes critics’ “Best of the Nineties” lists. Omnivore Records has just reissued the classic album, making the record even better with the inclusion of four bonus tracks, including a newly recorded version of her song “Strawberry Road.” Icon Fetch sits down with Phillips, who gives us the background on that great album. She also talks about the circumstances that led to her role in Die Hard. She also talks her fan subscription series and upcoming projects
