TOO MUCH is the gripping true story of a woman driven to the brink, sacrificing everything—love, loyalty, and sanity—in the name of retribution. I wonder if it all started with a single impulsive decision: joining the U.S. Army for "free" medical school. But the reality of military medicine was far different. I found myself trapped in a system that values hierarchy, patriarchy, and conformity over compassion and care. My mental health deteriorated. Addictive habits became my crutch. TOO MUCH is the story of my battle to reclaim my sanity and my voice. It's a raw and honest look at the dark side of medicine and the challenges of mental illness. It's a story that will remind you how a brighter future is possible, even when it feels like everything is broken. This is my story. But maybe it's your story, too. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Cindy Lee Neighbors is a retired US Army physician and writer whose work centers on mental health advocacy. Her debut memoir, TOO MUCH, chronicles her experiences navigating mental health challenges and a toxic work environment within military medicine. She's also a passionate children's book author, with her debut title, Benji and Briana Become Booger Doctors, and the creator of the coloring book series, "Adventures in Surgeryland." Cindy's mission is to inspire others to overcome adversity and find their voice through storytelling. You can learn more about Cindy and her work at https://www.cindyleeneighbors.com TOPICS OF CONVERSATION The Inspiration and Purpose Behind Too Much – Cindy Neighbors discusses why she wrote her memoir, emphasizing her struggles with mental health during her surgical residency and her desire to break the stigma surrounding these challenges. The Role of the Ocean as a Symbol in the Memoir – Cindy explains why she opened the book with a scene on a Hawaiian beach and how the ocean serves as a recurring motif representing transformation, reflection, and healing. The Challenges of Writing a Memoir – Cindy talks about working with her developmental editor, making difficult decisions about what to include and exclude, and the emotional difficulty of revisiting traumatic experiences. Her Journey Through Mental Health Struggles and Addiction – She details her experiences with substance use, the breaking point that led her to seek help, and how rehabilitation ultimately set her on a different path. What's Next: Fiction Writing and Children's Books – Cindy shares her plans to write fiction, her recent children's book (Benji and Brianna Become Booker Doctors), and her efforts to remain engaged in the community through creative projects.

"The Last Ranger" had its premiere at the Pan African Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its story of rhino poaching and conservation efforts in Amakhala Game Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa, during the pandemic. Based on actual life events, the story was brought to the producers by David S. Lee after witnessing the results of a poaching attack. Director Cindy Lee & Producer/Writer Darwin Shaw were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. We're brat(s). And, as we do every December, the most brat thing we can do is to step out of the O3L era and count down our favorite albums of the year. 2024 has provided a treasure trove of pop culture highlights - it was a big pop girl year with a new crop of superstars. There were massive albums (in terms of sales, impact, and length) like The Tortured Poets Department, COWBOY CARTER, and Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee, but also records that were "short n' sweet" (literally and figuratively). There was the Kendrick v. Drake beef. Everyone had a Brat summer (well, almost everyone). And did we mention Shaboozey?!? Oh, actually, we didn't mention Shaboozey, but we wish we had...because it is kinda fun to say. It's also become O3L tradition to have someone who actually created one of the year's best albums join us for this episode, and this year is certainly no exception. This year, we welcome prolific singer/songwriter/producer Tamar Berk to join us for this discussion. Tamar has played in numerous bands in the Chicago, Portland, and San Diego scenes since the mid-90s, and in September she released her fourth solo album, Good Times for a Change. The new album is another brilliant mix of power pop hooks, '90s-leaning indie rock, and introspective songwriting. Every one of the Tamar's records has made Brett's year end Top 100 Albums list for their respective years...if that ain't a feather in your artistic cap, we don't know what is. But she's also received a rave review in Creem magazine and has made a whole lot of other year end best of lists. We guess that's cool too. Can we get a big ol' "Shaboozey" to that?!? Vic (Inspired by cover art from Diamond Jubilee by Cindy Lee) //文案 Ricky Hi大家好,2024(农历)的最后一天,我们终于把这期节目发出来了! //Songs Intro: Kingdom come - Cindy Lee 13:49 Kingdom come - Cindy Lee 27:58 If You Hear Me Crying - Cindy Lee 33:14 Two Times Water - Wendy Eisenberg 40:58 In The Pines - Wendy Eisenberg 46:42 The Magician - Geordie Greep 54:33 Holy, Holy - Geordie Greep 58:35 27 Questions - black midi 1:03:07 The Magician - Geordie Greep (cont.) 1:18:35 Girl So Confusing - Charlie XCX 1:23:19 Everything is Romantic - Charlie XCX 1:25:30 Everything is Romantic featuring Caroline Polachek - Charlie XCX 1:36:43 Noid - Tyler, The Creator 1:45:10 Loud Bark - Mannequin Pussy Outro: Endsong - The Cure //Albums Diamond Jubilee - Cindy Lee View Finder - Wendy Eisenberg The New Sound - Geordie Greep BRAT - Charlie XCX Brat and it's completely different but also still brat - Charlie XCX Chromakopia - Tyler, The Creator I Got Heaven - Mannequin Pussy 欢迎大家微信搜索LIPU_RickyBradDylan,添加离谱小助手进入我们的听众群~

Escuchar audio

Steven and Ian begin this week's episode with some shocking news: It looks like Steven is going to win the Fantasy Albums Draft this quarter (1:57)! Big help comes courtesy of new albums out today from Michael Kiwanuka and Kim Deal of the Breeders, which have been very well reviewed. Then the guys talk about candidates for "Album Of The Year" according to critical consensus, including Charli XCX's Brat, Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter, MJ Lenderman's Manning Fireworks, and Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee (13:00). Then they dive into the new album from Father John Misty, Mahashmashana, and how it compares to his previous records (32:25).In the mailbag, the guys address one of their all-time best questions: Who is the most "dudes rock" quarterback of all time (45:24)?In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the Philly indie band 22° Halo while Steven stumps for the cult singer-songwriter Lee Baggett (56:11).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Cory Atad (The Baffler) Joins Dr. Movies and The Corb to talk about "MEGALOPOLIS," a movie about Francis Ford Coppola getting extremely baked and creating a drastically less efficent method of public transit. Corbin writing this right now just wants to say: my opinion on this movie has curdled into something meaner and less forgiving after recording this episode. I have come to think of it as a monument to one man's narcissim, a canker sore on the art of cinema, a pile of garbage for precisely no one. I will concede that it is not boring, though, and John Voight does say "Gargatua is here!" Also, this week, Musk announced the Robotaxi thing. The cars have two seats in them, just like the crummy cars in this movie. Corbin reccomends Diamond Jubilee, an album by Cindy Lee you can acquire here. Matt reccomends the new Blood Incantation record. Cory reccomends High Potential, a new TV show. Next week's episode is about "The Breaking Ice," which you can see here. Matt said this: "Can you note the song at the end? It's Cult of Luna on a Metropolis themed record called "Vertikal."
In which The Curmudgeons shake, shake, shake that booty and revisit one of popular music's most unfairly maligned genres. Disco was essentially funky orchestral music--grand, reverb-heavy, maximal, showy, dramatic. Yet it was also energetic and fun as hell. Here, we explore disco's birth as a movement of freedom and uninhibited expression in Black and Hispanic gay nightclubs and how, once a production house in Philadelphia put an official musical sheen on the proceedings, it erupted into the mainstream. We also lament disco's demise among burnout, derision and plain' ol macho racism, sexism and homophobia. Hey pals. We're back with the first of five new free episodes that we've cooked up for your listening pleasure. If you want to keep getting episodes whenever we take a pause from publishing the free stuff, you can sign up for a paid subscription, which gets you 1-2 paywalled episodes a month, whether or not we're on break. Once you sign up, you'll also get an invite to CUJOPLEX, a private Discord server and online hangout zone where folks who like talking about the evolving state of independent music, culture, and media can congregate, share links, and talk about the news of the day. To sweeten the deal, we're also offering 30 percent off on annual subscriptions until June 13. That means you pay $35 instead of the usual $50. Today, we're diving into The Living Wage for Musicians Act, a new bill circulating through Congress aimed at increasing the amount of money musicians make when fans stream their music online. Introduced in March by reps Rashida Tlaib and Jamaal Bowman and created in partnership with the United Musicians and Allied Workers, it proposes the creation of a new streaming royalty just for musicians, separate from what streamers are already paying out to labels and other rights holders. All of which is to say, the streaming industry, with its long-broken and winner-take-all system of compensation for artists, may finally be getting regulated. Among those leading the charge is UMAW organizer and former Galaxie 500 drummer Damon Krukowski, who you may know as one half of the psych-folk duo Damon & Naomi as well as the creator of the excellent Dada Drummer Almanach Substack. Damon joins us to give us a crash course in the history of digital music royalties, and why the current system makes it so incredibly difficult for most artists to see any meaningful revenue from their recorded music. We also get into what challenges the bill currently faces, its radical mechanism for redistributing wealth from the most popular streaming artists to their less-streamed counterparts, and whether we're headed for a future where some independent musicians may choose to opt out of streaming altogether — Cindy Lee style. The song featured in today's episode is “$$$” by Vundabar. Steven begins this episode like he has many other installments of Indiecast — by complaining to Ian about the performance of his Fantasy Albums team. In this instance, he thought he had a sure thing — a new Taylor Swift album — but after a predictable wave of early raves, Taylor's Metacritic score has tumbled amid a critical backlash. What happened? (0:30) Steven and Ian also recap their recent experiences at two very different concerts, Phish at Sphere and Cindy Lee in San Diego. (16:08)After that, Steven proceeds to rant about Oasis not get inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this year, and how this underlines once again the Rock Hall's bias against alt and indie bands of the 1980s and '90s. (25:24) He also compares Foreigner and Peter Frampton to former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer. and it definitely makes sense. Then the guys review the new album by the charming Austin indie-pop duo Hovvdy, who make very good patio music. (36:23) In the mailbag, a listener brings up new music from Menomena and if it's ever bad to sound too much like yourself. (45:07)In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the “sasscore” band SeeYouSpaceCowboy while Steven goes for a classic rec with the '80s band Love And Rockets. Steven and Ian begin this week's episode by talking about shows they plan on seeing this weekend — Ian is going to check out the buzzy retro-pop master Cindy Lee (3:56) while Steven is venturing to Las Vegas to see Phish play the Sphere (0:29). They also briefly touch on the iffy-looking Taylor Swift album out today, The Tortured Poets Department, which has high “unintentional comedy” potential (12:16).From there they follow up on last week's Coachella discussion to cover some of the festival's viral performances, which also happen to be the biggest trainwrecks of the opening weekend: Blur's indifferently received spot and Grimes' glitch-filled DJ set (18:07). Then they review two albums out today by veteran rock acts: Pearl Jam's Dark Matter (25:36)and Cloud Nothings' Final Summer (39.18). Do they still have the juice? The guys hash it out.In Recommendation Corner, Ian recommends Chanel Beads and Steven raves about the new single by Ben Seratan (50:06).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. This week's episode opens with Steven and Ian remembering the old Pitchfork "stunt" review of Jet's 2006 album Shine On (0:27), which was dissected this week in an article by The Ringer. While stunt reviews are kind of dumb, Steven and Ian still miss them a little. The guys also explore the indie-rock guest stars on Beyoncé's new blockbuster album Cowboy Carter (7:11), including Adam Granduciel, Jonathan Rado, and some dude from The Stills. From there, they review the great new Vampire Weekend album, Only God Was Above Us (12:49), which manages to change the band's just enough while retrenching with some classic themes. They also look back at Modest Mouse's Good News For People Who Love Bad News (28:06), which turns 20 this week, a crucial album in the mainstreaming of indie rock in the aughts that might also be... not that great? In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the band Cindy Lee while Steven stumps for the latest from Phosphorescent and the Philly band A Country Western (52:36).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
