"If you're invested in security and certainty, then you're not going to feel good a lot of the time."

The Daily Buddhist: 366 Days of Wisdom for Happiness, Inner Freedom, and Mindful Living by Pema Sherpa, Brendan Barca Amazon.com Thedailybuddhist.net 366 daily doses of profound and practical Buddhist teachings for true transformation. Why do so many people still embrace the wisdom of Buddhism, even after twenty-five hundred years? The answer lies in the fact that, although the world may look different now, humans still grapple with the same fundamental challenges: overwhelming emotions, discontentment, and a longing for happiness. These are the very challenges that Buddhist philosophy can help us overcome, empowering us to transform into fearless, compassionate, and joyful individuals. Buddhism provides a framework we can use to lead a great life—one in which we are kinder, have greater resilience, are more adaptable to change, and experience greater lightness and joy. The Daily Buddhist offers daily teachings of Buddhist wisdom and practices to help us navigate the challenges of everyday life. Drawing from many of the greatest Buddhist masters throughout history—renowned Indian philosophers like Nagarjuna and Santideva; Tibetan masters like Milarepa, Patrul Rinpoche, and Chögyam Trungpa; and, of course, the Buddha himself—the authors, Buddhist scholars and practitioners, deliver daily doses of Buddhist insights tailored for 21st century living. Each day of the year, you'll receive an insightful quote from a Buddhist master paired with a thought-provoking reflection that's accessible, practical, and modern. Over the course of the year, you'll learn: How mindfulness can help you find inner peace How to make friends with yourself through meditation How to overcome difficult emotions like anger, jealousy, and anxiety Why cultivating compassion leads to happiness Why you are not your thoughts How to tame your inner critic How to discover happiness that actually lasts This profound yet practical approach to Buddhist philosophy provides tools for true transformation. By the end of the year, you'll see the world and your mind in a new light, propelling you along the path to lasting happiness, self-mastery, and inner freedom.About the author Brendan Barca is an author, keynote speaker, entrepreneur, and Buddhist practitioner. He discovered Buddhism in his twenties, initially turning to meditation to cope with stress and burnout. Since then, he has practiced Tibetan Buddhsim for years, traveling to Nepal to learn from revered masters such as Dudjom Tenzin Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche. Experiencing the transformative effects of mindfulness, meditation, and Buddhist teachings in his own life, he co-founded Brema Solutions with his wife, Pema Sherpa, to bring these invaluable principles to corporations worldwide. Together, Pema and Brendan wrote their first book, The Daily Buddhist, and also run their popular newsletter of the same name. Brendan lives with his wife and daughter Samaya in Brooklyn, NY.

About the Author: Pema Chödrön, born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in New York City in 1936, is one of the most influential spiritual teachers in the West. A former teacher and wife, her life transformed after a series of personal challenges, including a painful divorce, which led her to explore Tibetan Buddhism. She became a student of Lama Chime Rinpoche in the French Alps and was later ordained as a Buddhist nun in London by the Sixteenth Karmapa. Under the guidance of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, she deepened her practice and teaching. Pema is the director emeritus of Gampo Abbey, the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery for Westerners, in Nova Scotia, Canada. She is a prolific author, known for works like When Things Fall Apart and The Places That Scare You, which explore mindfulness, compassion, and resilience. Her teachings emphasize finding liberation through vulnerability and embracing life's challenges as opportunities for growth. About the Book: In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön invites readers to explore the Tibetan Buddhist teachings on the bardo, the transitional state between death and rebirth. As a side note, Buddhism embraces the concept of reincarnation. These teachings highlight how the impermanent nature of life mirrors the bardo experience and how the way we live daily reflects how we will face life's ultimate transition—death. In essence, she's saying that the gap between birth and death is what we call life. She contends that by cultivating mindfulness, compassion, and acceptance of birth, life and death, we can navigate the uncertainties of life and death with a calm state of grace and wisdom. My personal take on this topic? I think it's important in some way to acknowledge and accept the reality of death in order to live your life fully in preparation for it. Make Sense? I truly appreciate all of the Spiritual Artists who have followed me during my June Doodle Book Club. Here's a bonus reading of a very relevant and informative chapter from Pema Chodrin's book titled, "The In-Between State."It reminds me of the chapter from my book called, "The Rule of Medium," but speaks to our human situation. After Project Blue Book was deactivated in 1969, civilians were left with no official government body prepared to deal with UFO reports. This is still the case (the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office only takes reports from military personnel) and this has left local agencies, such as the police, as the organizations that people often turn to, and each one handles reports in its own way. It recently came as a surprise to Pennsylvania state representatives during a budget meeting when it was mentioned that UFO reports were received by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. Records recently acquired from PEMA provide an inside look into how they were handled by organizations in that state. Welcome to another inspiring episode of Inspire Us, hosted by Jay Paul Nadeau, a renowned motivational speaker, and former hostage negotiator. Jay was also the author of Take Control of Your Life. In this episode, he continues his insightful readings from the book, The Zen Monkey and the Lotus Flower, 52 Stories That Will Change Your Life by Tempa Yeshe. Today's enlightening tale is The Dancing Monk and the Rainbow. It paints a picture of a youthful monk named Pema, who loves to dance. Despite criticism from his fellow monks, Pema's dance becomes a form of meditation, embracing each minute of life with gratitude, joy, and a deep spiritual connection to the universe. When he dances in rain and sunshine, he not only brings delight and beauty to his monastery but also teaches us the importance of living in the present and weathering life's storms with grace. Paul beautifully adds his thoughts to the story, expanding on the concepts of self-expression, acceptance, and the presence of mind. He inspires us to learn from Pema's example, to stay authentic, and to embrace the things that bring us joy and happiness. He urges us not to let the judgments of others deter us from experiencing the beauty and magic in every moment, whether resplendent or challenging. By the end of this episode, you'll be left with a heartening reminder that "this too shall pass". With these thought-provoking insights, Jay encourages you to live your life proactively, knowing that while storms may pass, joy is a continuous process, and rainbows are around the corner. So why not find your dance, embrace the present moment, and let your spirit shine?

Hope & Fear are two sides to the same coin according to Pema Chodron. In this episode I share some passages from Pema's book When Things Fall Apart that relate to hope and fear.
Last month, in January, several stolen cultural heritage were returned to Nepal from the United States. Among them were sacred idols of the Hindu god Uma-Maheshwar that were stolen almost 50 years ago from Chyasal, Patan. They were identified recently in the storage facilities of the Brooklyn Museum, which began repariation, after the efforts of Newa Guthi New York. Locals welcomed their Gods with heartfelt celebrations and a puja for forgiveness. The idols were taken around the city in chariots and, finally, re-instated in Chyasal hiti. In recent years, Nepal has seen many such successful repatriation efforts. The trafficking of cultural heritage had once left local communities with immeasurable pain and loss. So, In this re-broadcast, we bring my conversation with criminologist Dr Emiline Smith about cultural heritage trafficking in Nepal. Originally aired on 26 September 2022, in this episode, PEI's Khushi and Emiline delve into the obscure world of cultural heritage trafficking and its impact on communities, with a particular focus on Nepal. The two tap into Emiline's expertise as a criminologist to understand the processes involved in the trafficking of cultural objects and its history and persistence in Nepal. They then discuss the repatriation of such objects and how restorative justice can be achieved in the process. Dr. Emiline Smith is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Glasgow (Scotland). She is a Fellow of the Centre for Criminology at the University of Hong Kong and a member of the Trafficking Culture Research Consortium and the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime. In addition, she is an advisor to the Nepal Heritage Recovery Campaign and several other NGOs. She recently authored and published a trilingual storybook for children titled ‘Pema and the Stolen Statue from Dolpa'; for more information, see www.stolenstatues.com. Chödrön also talks about how to deal with difficult people, set boundaries, and keep a sense of humor in the face of our human foibles and failings.Pema Chödrön was born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in New York City. In her mid-thirties, Ani Pema met and studied with Lama Chime Rinpoche, becoming a novice nun in 1974 in London. She received ordination from His Holiness the Sixteenth Karampa during that time. Pema first met her root guru, the teacher with whom she had the most profound connection, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in 1972, and she studied closely with him until his death in 1987. In 1984, at the behest of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Ani Pema moved from Boulder, Colorado to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to be the director of Gampo Abbey. She currently teaches throughout the United States and Canada and continues her studies and meditative retreat under the guidance of Venerable Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche. In this episode we talk about:How to deal with difficult people and set boundariesHaving a sense of humor about our own foibles and failings Keeping a sense of ok-ness in the face of whatever happens Why coming from a place of love doesn't preclude us from getting angry or standing up for what we believe inKeeping a sense of humor when we're setting intentions or taking a vow so we don't set ourselves up for failureThe actual language of the Bodhisattva vow and why admitting how vast and impossible it is to achieve can actually be empoweringWhy putting others first doesn't mean leaving yourself out of the equation How healing yourself can affect your relationships with other people and create a virtuous circle Taking a "one person at a time" approach to sufferingRelated Episodes:The Dalai Lama's Guide To HappinessFull Shownotes:https://www.tenpercent.com/tph/podcast-episode/pema-chodron-2024See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[00:01] I'm on a break. So today you're going to be listening to one of my alltime favorite stress therapy episodes. And next week, I will be back to join you in celebrating are you ready for this? The 100th episode of stress therapy. Yes, it's going to be great. But for now, relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy special edition session, what to do when everyone is driving you nuts, is about to begin right now. Hey, beautiful people. [00:44] It's time for some stress therapy, a podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to park my 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now, your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherry Flake. [01:13] Before we get into this of it, we're going to take a teensy tiny break. [01:17] Be right back. Hey, beautiful people. [01:21] Are you ever looking around and just thinking, oh, my gosh, everyone is nuts, everyone is driving me crazy? Today, I'm going to tell you exactly what's going on, when this is going down and how to fix it. It's season six on stress therapy, all the little secrets that this psychotherapist wants you to know. So relax and settle in and listen up because your stress therapy session is. [01:45] About to begin right now. [01:59] Hey, you beautiful people. [02:01] It's time for some stress therapy, a podcast about how to meditate and get better at stress for people living in the real world. Finally, a place to park my 25 plus years of experience of working as a psychotherapist in the mental health field. And now, your host, me, the stress therapist, Sherry Flake. Hey, beautiful people, what's happening? [02:31] Okay. So have you ever had the experience where everywhere you look, every person you talk to, every situation you're in, you're convinced that everyone is nuts, they're all just driving you absolutely crazy and that no one is getting it, no one understands you, everyone is annoying, no one is kind like you're just getting it and getting it. And everywhere you turn it's just going poorly no matter what. I totally get it. I had a day like this like a week ago and I was like, oh, my gosh. And I was lucky it was only for a day, right? Sometimes it lasts and lasts. And here's the bummer. Okay? So now before I get into it, I just want to ask you a question that everyone has been asking me lately. And the question is, have you seen the show Shrinking, right, where this guy is a psychotherapist and he just throws it all out. He throws out all of his clinical knowledge and he just starts telling all of his clients things that are not ready to hear, things that aren't even really that kind but he thinks might really help them in the long run anyway. And he's dealing with his own struggles, of course. But the point of it is, here's the thing that I kind of wish that I could say to my clients who come to me with this problem and what I had to realize for myself when I too was having this problem, because no one is spared of this awful feeling that no one gets you. Everything's sucking and everyone is sucking. And here's the thing. When everyone is driving you nuts, not one person, not one situation, not one decision, not one day, not one event, but everyone is driving you crazy. It's not them, it's you. That's the bad news. And when I was on a retreat once, a long, long time ago, one of the retreat leaders played this video of Pema Trojan. I'll put it in the show notes. It's amazing. She is a Tibetan Buddhist monk, and what makes her so lovely and relatable, well, according to me, is that she's American and she was a householder, she used to be married, and before she became a monk, she was a lot like you and me, right? And she's just so sweet and she presents her lessons in such a relatable way. And this video was only like a minute long. And again, I'll put it in the show notes for you. But she starts talking about being on retreat. And I'm leaving today to go on retreat. By the way, I'm going to be going to the Ignatius house here in Atlanta. It's really close. Usually I go kind of far and usually I go kind of long. This is like a half hour from my house and it's only going to be three days. It is going to be silent, which would be nice, but it's very short. So she starts talking about being on retreat and it can be kind of annoying to be on retreat because you can't talk and all of these noises are going on and on. And I've done podcasts about being on retreat and maybe when I come back, I'll cover that again. But you're with all these people and your brain is just so busy trying to judge and figure everybody out without talking to anybody, right? Like, you can't talk to anybody. And depending on the retreat, you renunciate your phone, you can't read, you can't write, you can't even take pictures with your phone. They really want you to just face yourself, man, and listen to what your thoughts are saying and listen to the listener and separate yourself from your thoughts and realize that you're not your thoughts. But your ego is just so obsessed with trying to label everybody. And of course, at the end of the retreat, you realize everything you thought about everyone was wrong. But she's sitting at the retreat and she's like, oh, this person, they're taking this too seriously. And that person's cologne is so strong. And they're not supposed to wear any oils in the retreat room or pardon me, in the meditation hall, and that person's driving me nuts, and this person's too noisy and all this stuff. And then she describes the idea that a lot of us are just going around this Earth, and we all know someone like this. I mean, I am thinking of particular person in my life right now when I say this that just is constantly going around and little by little, with every single thing that's driving them nuts, they're trying to fix it, address it, get mad about it, express anger about it, confront it, whatever. And they go around and go and around and go around and do this over and over and over. And Pema says, I actually have a. [07:10] Plant in my kitchen named Pema because I love her so much, but she. [07:15] Know they're going around the Earth and. [07:17] They'Re trying to cover everything in leather. [07:20] So everywhere they step, they don't get burned. After hearing concerns on social media of Matt and I practicing yoga and prayerful meditation, I knew it was time to invite my dear friend Amber Mattingly, DMin to the podcast to share her story. This is a faith-based episode that addresses the biggest fears and questions around these practices. Amber began yoga when her son was newly diagnosed with autism. She was overwhelmed, frightened for his future, worried about her marriage, and frustrated at life. At the height of this experience, she stopped sleeping for a whole year. She was not the youthful mom coming to yoga to learn handstands and complicated poses. Instead, she was the young mom barely able to make it through the day who ended up spending most of the time crying on her mat. For her, yoga is a tool that reconnected her with her true self, strengthened connection with something greater than myself, and built relationships based on humility, compassion & radical amazement! Amber met Pema while pursuing her Doctor of Ministry degree in Compassion based Leadership and they wondered what might happen if people from different faith traditions shared a prayer/meditation practice. Would they grow spiritually together while deepening their connection to their own faith tradition? This curiosity lead them to develop a study that included Buddhist and Christian practitioners. What we found were some hidden treasures! Find out more about Amber: https://ambermattinglylivefree.com/ Read Amber and Pema's book: A Leap of (inter)Faith
