Your brain doesn't just run on chemistry. It runs on time.Every day your body broadcasts signals through sleep timing, light exposure, body temperature, hormones, and circadian rhythms—yet most people ignore these patterns while chasing pills, supplements, and productivity hacks. In this episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with Benjamin Smarr to explore a new frontier of human biology: how time-series biology and wearable data may unlock powerful, non-drug ways to improve brain health, mood, and performance.Dr. Smarr's research looks at the body not as a snapshot—but as a movie, where continuous biological signals reveal patterns that traditional medicine often misses. In this episode, we explore:Why “normal” is a misleading concept in human biologyHow circadian rhythms and sleep timing shape mental performance and moodWhat wearable devices can reveal about your hidden biological patternsWhy body temperature rhythms may be linked to depression and mental healthThe overlooked role of light timing, temperature regulation, and daily rhythmsHow “social time” vs biological time affects cognition, sleep, and productivityWhere self-tracking and wearable data help—and where they can backfireWhether the future of medicine could include “time prescriptions” instead of drugsThis conversation reframes how we think about health, performance, and mental well-being—not as something fixed, but as something that shifts with how we live in time.If you're interested in sleep science, circadian biology, wearables, mental performance, precision health, and the future of non-drug brain optimization, this episode will challenge how you think about your own body.About Dr. Benjamin SmarrBenjamin Smarr is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering and Data Science at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). What happens when everything you thought defined you… is taken in a single moment? For Daniel Carlton, that moment came in 2012 while serving as a U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret, when he stepped on an IED—losing one leg and nearly losing the other. It was a near-death experience that would have ended most people's story. It didn't end his.In this episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we go far beyond injury and recovery. This is a conversation about identity, resilience, purpose, and what it really takes to rebuild a life after everything changes.Daniel didn't just survive—he chose to push the limits of what's possible. From endurance rucks and extreme physical challenges to beekeeping, and leading others through suffering with purpose… he's redefining what strength actually looks like. This is not motivation. This is perspective. In this episode, we explore:The moment everything changed—and the decision that followedWhat the darkest days actually looked like after limb loss and traumaHow to rebuild identity when your body and life are no longer the sameWhy people who suffer often choose harder paths—not easier onesWhat endurance rucks reveal about pain, trauma, and human connectionThe mindset that allows someone to keep going when most people quitHow to turn loss into purpose—and help others do the sameIf you've ever faced adversity, loss, or a moment that forced you to question who you are… this episode will stay with you.About Daniel CarltonDaniel Carlton is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret) soldier, Ranger qualified, and 2? Congress intended most first-time non-violent offenders receive a non-custodial sentence. That's how federal law worked before the guidelines. What if spine surgery isn't the breakthrough—it's the backup plan?In a world where millions are told “scalpel first” for back pain, joint degeneration, and nerve issues, a quiet revolution is happening in regenerative medicine, non-surgical spine care, stem cells, exosomes, and peptides. On this episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with one of the true pioneers in the field—Dr. Jeff Gross, a spine-fellowship trained, board-certified neurosurgeon who's pushing healing beyond the knife and toward regeneration.Dr. Gross has spent over two decades treating back pain, neck pain, disc issues, and sports injuries using both traditional neurosurgical expertise and the latest in regenerative therapies, helping thousands of patients find alternatives to spinal surgery and accelerate healing naturally. In this episode we break down:• When stem cells and exosomes actually help back and joint pain• How peptides are being used responsibly in regenerative care• The filters Dr. Gross uses to decide who truly needs surgery—and who doesn't• What the science actually says (and what's hype) about regenerative spine repair• How doctors can match the right biologic tool to the right problem• What real healing metrics look like—beyond pain scores and imagingIf you've ever typed “Can stem cells fix my back?”, “alternatives to spine surgery”, or “non-surgical regenerative spine care” into Google… this episode finally gives you evidence-based answers from someone who's lived both sides of the scalpel. She Survived a 113-MPH Crash — Kali Parkinson's Story of Trauma, Healing, and Becoming Someone New | Crackin' Backs PodcastOne moment, you're a college student planning your future. The next, you're in a car going 113 miles per hour, rolling 15 times down a 300-foot canyon in rural Utah.On this powerful episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with Kali Parkinson, a college student whose life changed in a single, violent moment—and whose story of survival, recovery, and identity will stay with you long after the episode ends. The driver of the car died on impact.Kali survived—but only because of a chain of unlikely “coincidences” that defy explanation.Random hikers happened to be out on a Wednesday night in a remote canyon.Despite minimal cell service, they were able to call 911.A medical helicopter was already in the area on a training flight and arrived in less than 25 minutes. One hiker carried a pocket knife with a seatbelt cutter, just in time to free Kali as the belt tightened around her neck and began to suffocate her. This episode isn't about shock value. It's about what happens after—when survival becomes the starting line, not the finish. In this conversation, Kali shares:• What she remembers from the moment everything changed—and the first clear thought that cut through the chaos• How surviving a near-fatal car accident affects not just the body, but the mind• The hardest emotions she faced once the dust settled• What it's like when your body becomes something you must relearn instead of trust• The challenge of going from independence at college to suddenly needing help in ways most young adults never experience• Whether accepting help—or trusting herself again—was the harder battle• How facing mortality at such a young age changed her relationship with time, priorities, and what truly matters• Who she hopes people sense she is today—not what she survived, but who she has becomeThis episode speaks directly to anyone who has experienced trauma, loss, or a life-altering event—and to anyone navigating the quiet, unseen work of healing. Why This Story MattersKali Parkinson's story reminds us that healing isn't linear, strength isn't loud, and survival is not the same as living. Her experience offers insight not only for those recovering from physical trauma, but for anyone re-learning trust—in their body, their mind, and their future. This is not just a story about what happened. It's a story about who you become afterward. Are medical students and young doctors really becoming better clinicians — or just better prompt engineers with stethoscopes? In this episode of Crackin' Backs, we go deep with Dr. Ti Pence to unpack AI in healthcare, how it's reshaping medical training, clinical decision-making, ethical responsibility, bias, and what the next decade of medicine might look like. From daily AI use in study and documentation to hospitals quietly embedding tools into clinics, we ask the hard questions:What happens when medical training prioritizes AI fluency over clinical judgment? How can future physicians use AI to augment — not override — human expertise?Where does bias pose the greatest risk in real-world medicine?Who should be held accountable if AI harms a patient? And what does an ideal AI-powered healthcare system look like by 2030?Whether you're a clinician, medical student, health professional, patient advocate, or curious about the future of medicine and technology, this episode challenges assumptions and shows the human side of AI in health care.About Our Guest — Dr. Ti PenceDr. Ti Pence, DC is a clinician, healthcare strategist, and thought leader at the intersection of artificial intelligence, clinical judgment, and medical education. With advanced training in healthcare administration and cutting-edge insight into how AI tools are shaping practice, Dr. Pence explores the balance between technology and human expertise — especially in how doctors are trained, evaluated, and held accountable today. He's been featured talking about AI's impact on manual therapy, chiropractic education, and the future of clinical skills — challenging traditional norms and offering practical, big-picture insight into where medicine is headed next. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why AI is already embedded in how medical students study, write notes, and plan care One real example where AI impressed — and one where it missed the mark How bias in healthcare data can harm real lives What professionalism with AI should actually look like The “rules of engagement” every future physician should follow A hopeful — and a cautionary — vision of medicine in 2030Whether you're preparing for med school, navigating clinical practice, or just curious about AI + human judgment, this episode makes complex ideas feel understandable and urgent.Listen, Subscribe & ShareAvailable on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, and wherever you get your podcasts. If this episode made you think differently about medicine and AI, please subscribe, rate, and leave a review — it helps other curious minds discover the show.We are two sports chiropractors, seeking knowledge from some of the best resources in the world of health. Most people fear one life-changing setback. Matt Blanchard has survived two. And today on Crackin' Backs, we're not just talking about recovery — we're talking about life after paralysis. What happens when the crowds fade, the rehab ends, and an entirely new version of living begins?Matt's story is as raw and real as they come. In 2006, a rollover accident left him with a T-12 spinal cord injury, paralyzed from the waist down. After 15 years of relentless therapy he defied the odds and walked again. Then in 2021 a head-on collision with a drunk driver erased his progress — the jaws of life, an air-lift to a trauma center, paralysis again. Through it all, Matt founded St. George Adaptive Sports, became a nationally recognized motivational speaker, and rewrote what resilience, strength and real living mean. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeHow identity dies and is reborn when you rebuild life twice after paralysis — the truth behind “starting over.”The smallest, most overlooked daily habit that keeps Matt grounded, mentally resilient and strong — still to this day. What happens after the world stops watching: how do you create momentum when no one is cheering and your body still carries the load? What healthcare providers still get wrong about the long-term physical realities of paralysis — and the hidden mental load they often miss.A perspective every fully-mobile athlete would gain if they lived just one day in Matt's body — about training, gratitude and physical mastery.Connect & Support the MissionIf you feel inspired by Matt's journey and want to join the cause:Visit St. George Adaptive Sports (Utah-based nonprofit) to donate, volunteer or learn how adaptive golf and inclusive recreation are rewriting strength HEREFollow Matt on Instagram: @mattyblanch3 & Facebook: Matt Blanchard 333 to stay updated, share his message and support his speaking mission.Book Matt as a speaker or connect for collaboration via BlanchardInspires.comWe are two sports chiropractors, seeking knowledge from some of the best resources in the world of health. On today's episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with one of the most quietly powerful humans we've ever met—Dennis Lappin, a career firefighter, father, and American Ninja Warrior who embodies what real strength looks like when no one's watching.Dennis runs toward burning buildings for a living…and for fun, he runs straight into obstacles most people wouldn't ever attempt. But his story isn't about the spotlight. It's about the moment the lights went out. While training for American Ninja Warrior, Dennis tore his Achilles and calf—an injury known to end athletic careers, especially for tactical athletes who rely on explosive strength and stability. Doctors told him he might never compete again. Most people would've taken that as their cue to step back.Dennis didn't.He didn't fight his way back for cameras, applause, or a redemption storyline. He came back because ordinary people don't do extraordinary things—extraordinary decisions do.In this raw, emotional, and deeply human conversation, we explore: The exact moment he decided “I'm not done”Was it in the firehouse, during rehab, or alone at home when doubt got loud? Dennis opens up about the internal line he refused to cross. How he built elite-level fitness around 24-hour firefighter shifts, stress, trauma, and unpredictabilityFirefighting isn't structured—so neither was his training. His system wasn't built on convenience… it was built inside chaos. How he balanced three identities: firefighter, athlete, and fatherWhat happens when the heaviest “hat” isn't the one people see? Dennis talks about emotional load, fatigue, and showing up even when you're empty. Why his rehab philosophy wasn't to “get back,” but to LEVEL UPHe breaks down the one rehab principle everyone ignores—and why it completely changed his recovery. The real fear he faced—on a fire call and on the Ninja Warrior courseAnd the exact mindset tool he used to get through the type of fear you don't talk about. His message for anyone who says: “I'm too tired, too old, too busy, too late”Dennis doesn't give motivational clichés. He gives truth earned in smoke, sweat, and setbacks. What healthcare providers often misunderstand about firefighters and tactical athletesIf you treat firefighters, law enforcement, or military personnel—this is a masterclass in understanding stress load, biology, and performance under pressure. The one life lesson he hopes his kids remember from watching him fall and rise againA moment that will hit every parent, coach, and athlete right in the chest. This episode isn't about Ninja Warrior. It isn't about firefighting. It's about every human being who has ever been knocked down and had to decide whether today is the day they stay down… or rise.We are two sports chiropractors, seeking knowledge from some of the best resources in the world of health. In this compelling episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Andria Klioze—physician, disease-reversal pioneer, and founder of the wellness platform Shield of Life. After years inside the rule-bound system of the Veterans Affairs (VA) caring for patients with advanced illnesses, Dr. Klioze made a bold decision: to leave the traditional structure and build a new model of care focused on gut health, soil microbiome, energy medicine, and true resilience. In this episode you'll learn:What it costs a doctor to trade “prescriptions for possibility,” and how hope, truth, love and faith can meet evidence-based medicine. The hardest lessons she had to unlearn after stepping away from the VA, and what healing really looks like when you remove bureaucracy. Why she calls her garden philosophy – and how the soil beneath your feet may reflect the health within your body. Her breakthrough integration of the human gut microbiome, soil biology and pulsed electromagnetic activation (PEMA), uniting energy medicine and biology.A life-changing patient story that redefines “reversal,” and the tools she uses when everyday life feels numb or cynical to keep belief alive.Whether you're looking for ways to reverse disease, reboot your health, or question the limits of modern medicine, this discussion cuts deep. It's for the seekers, the skeptics, and anyone ready to step into possibility.About Dr. Andria Klioze:Dr. Klioze graduated from the Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1995, completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1999 and a fellowship in faculty development in 2002. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine. In 2002 she left her role as Director of Faculty Development at UF and as a hospitalist for the VA in Gainesville, to work in the VA's new metabolic clinic in Daytona Beach. Today she leads Shield of Life, a physician-led program that focuses on disease-mitigation, remission and reversal through holistic, science-driven protocols.Learn more & connect with Dr. Klioze: Website: Shield for Life Instagram: @drandriaklioze Facebook: Shield of Life Facebook Page(Check for her podcast, webinars and educational series at her site.)Don't miss this—tap in now and discover what modern medicine misses, what your body knows, and how one physician is rewriting the rules of healing. We are two sports chiropractors, seeking knowledge from some of the best resources in the world of health. What if greatness isn't something you're born with… but something you grow into?On today's episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with one of the nation's leading minds in performance psychology: Dr. Amy Athey, Chief Wellbeing Officer at the University of Arizona, former NCAA athlete, and trusted mental performance advisor to Olympians, Special Forces operators, professional athletes, and high-pressure CEOs.Dr. Athey has spent decades inside the mindset of the world's highest achievers — and her message is both powerful and radically freeing:Greatness isn't fixed. Talent isn't destiny. The truly elite are simply… still evolving. In this eye-opening conversation, we dive deep into: The biggest myth about talent and greatness — and why believing it is dangerous for your potential How elite performers fall in love with the process, especially when results stall Why reflection is a performance superpower (and what the “action of reflection” actually looks like in real life) How Olympians and executives keep going when motivation dies The role of connection, purpose, and community in building mental resilience Self-compassion vs. inner fire — how to stay driven without destroying yourself The internal shift that separates those who crumble from those who evolve after injury, loss, burnout, or failure And the personal moment that forced Dr. Athey herself to evolve — reshaping her work and her missionThis episode is a must-listen for athletes, coaches, clinicians, leaders, and anyone chasing high performance without sacrificing wellbeing. 2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month! Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! And with that, please enjoy the absolute block party that is C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol 1, and keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 2nd (rerun) and 3rd (fresh) installments! Cheers! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 40 for Theme Thursday, December 20th, 2018. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. What if Alzheimer's isn't something we merely “treat” but a biochemical imbalance we can restore? On this episode of Crackin' Backs, we go deep with neuroscientist Dr. Dayan Goodenowe — a pioneer in the science of plasmalogens, memory, and brain restoration. We begin by peeling back his personal journey: what sparked his fascination with Alzheimer's, biochemical disease, and the hidden chemistry of consciousness. Then we dive into the heart of the episode:What are plasmalogens and why are they essential for brain health, memory, and cognition? How could plasmalogen deficiencies be the missing link in dementia and Alzheimer's disease?Which other biochemical pathways may hold keys to closing the gap between molecules and awareness? Can restoring a brain's chemistry truly void the myth that Alzheimer's is irreversible? You'll hear stories, concrete science, and a vision for the next frontier of Alzheimer's and other disease prevention, possible reversal, and cognitive restoration.Whether you're caring for someone with dementia, curious about brain longevity, or fascinated by the intersection of biochemistry and consciousness — this episode offers new hope and actionable insight. About Dr. Dayan Goodenowe, PhDDr. Goodenowe is a trailblazing neuroscientist, inventor, and the driving force behind Prodrome Sciences. He has led more than 15 years of research into metabolic biomarkers, Alzheimer's, and neurological disease. What do a struggling student, a decorated Navy SEAL, and a hospital CEO all have in common? The answer: Jeff Mengenhausen. In this explosive episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with the only Navy SEAL in the country running a hospital—a man who's rewriting the rules of leadership, resilience, and what healthcare should really be.Jeff's story is anything but ordinary. Today, he's transforming Montrose Regional Health into one of the most respected community hospitals in the nation. But his mission doesn't stop there—Jeff is exposing the cracks in America's hospital culture and challenging the grip Big Pharma and profit-driven systems have on patient care.Inside this episode, we ask:Why isn't the Navy SEAL ethos of “embrace the suck” translating into healthcare leadership? What behind-the-scenes SEAL lessons still drive Jeff's decisions as a hospital CEO?Why are so many hospitals failing their patients—and how is Montrose setting a new standard?Has Big Pharma hijacked the direction of care in America? And after trillions spent on cancer and chronic disease, why aren't outcomes improving? This conversation isn't just about medicine. Ever feel your body slam on the brakes at the worst moment—or light up just from someone's tone of voice? That's your nervous system running the show. In this episode of the Crackin' Backs Podcast, polyvagal performance coach Michael Allison (Polyvagal Clinic / The Play Zone) shows us how to find clarity in chaos and silence within the noise—teaching practical tools to shift from stress to calm, from pressure to play right when it counts.Michael breaks down Polyvagal Theory for non-experts—what it is, why it matters for peak performance, and the top myths he wants coaches and clinicians to retire (looking at you, oversimplified “fight-or-flight” narratives). Then we dive into his frameworks: The Play Zone and Autonomic Agility™—how to read your physiological state, respect its impact on performance, and shift under pressure. You'll get a crisp 90-second routine Michael uses with athletes and performers (such as high end tennis professionals and golfers) and learn exactly what a coach should observe and what the athlete should feel when it's working. Why listen? What if the fastest way to change your life isn't more willpower—but a better doorway into your subconscious? On today's Crackin' Backs Podcast, hypnotherapist Dayana Muzinek (Grace Method™ certified) pulls back the curtain on how hypnotherapy works, why it's more than “stage hypnosis,” and how focused consciousness can help rewire cue–craving–response patterns that drive anxiety, insomnia, IBS/gut issues, chronic pain, vaping, and doom-scrolling. Is chronic pain really “in the body”… or in the brain's predictions about the body?Today on the Crackin' Backs Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Jorge Esteves, PhD, DO—an osteopath, educator, and researcher whose work reframes low back pain, sciatica, and other MSK issues through the lens of predictive processing, active inference, and interoception. Dr. Esteves explains why pain is more than a physical signal: it's shaped by mood, memory, context, and environment—and how the right mix of smart touch, simple movement, precise language, and meaning can rewrite faulty predictions and dial down threat in the nervous system. We explore what he calls “smart touch”—the affective, well-timed, well-paced contact that improves therapeutic alliance, entrains breath and rhythm, and helps the brain feel safe enough to update its story about the spine. We also unpack fresh imaging work suggesting hands-on care can influence connectivity in pain and interoceptive hubs, including the insula—right where body-signal meaning is made. You'll leave with a 5-minute daily recalibration (breath cue + one gentle movement + one self-touch drill) to keep predictions aligned with reality—especially during a flare. What You'll LearnPain ≠ damage: Why back pain often persists due to over-protective predictions and how to nudge them toward safety.Smart touch, real change: How affective touch, pacing, and breath cues shift interoceptive processing and calm threat.Therapeutic alliance matters: The first 10 minutes that build trust—and the phrases clinicians should avoid because they raise threat.Brains on hands-on care: New imaging insights on how manual therapy may modulate brain connectivity in chronic low back pain.Learn More / Contact Dr. EstevesOfficial site: Prof Jorge EstevesGoogle Scholar (Atlântica University, Portugal): Google ScholarResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Jorge-Esteves-3 ResearchGate(En)active Inference paper (open-access): FrontiersEmail (from CV): osteojorge@gmail.com Pro OsteoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-jorge-esteves-27371522/ Pro OsteoTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/JEsteves_osteo Pro OsteoWe are two sports chiropractors, seeking knowledge from some of the best resources in the world of health.
