A few weeks ago, we talked to two sonic branding experts who compose music for household appliances. And we played for them a song “sung” by a washing machine that they didn't really appreciate. But many of our listeners immediately identified the tune, a famous melody by 19th-century composer Franz Schubert. And, as our guest tells us, it's not just any tune—it's one of Schubert's most beloved compositions, “The Trout,” which he returned to several times during his short but prolific career. L. Michael Griffel, a Schubert expert and former head of the music history department at The Julliard School, joins us for our mea culpa to “Die Forelle.” A transcript for this episode will be added to the original segment page: Who's composing music for my washing machine? In this episode of Disaster Tough Podcast, John Scardena breaks down the latest FEMA developments, including the FEMA Review Council recommendations and @Cameron Hamilton's nomination for Senate confirmation. More importantly, this episode focuses on what emergency managers, crisis leaders, and public safety professionals should actually do when major news occurs. Rather than getting consumed by rumors, predictive analysis, or “what if” thinking, this episode challenges leaders to focus on operational readiness, credibility, adaptability, and mission execution. John introduces practical leadership concepts like the “So What? Now What?” mindset and the “Washing Machine” framework: Keep, Stop, Enhance, or Start.

In other interviews, Ayabonga Cawe, Chief Commissioner at ITAC talks about South Africa’s decision to impose anti‑dumping duties on imported Chinese and Thai washing machines, unpacking the findings behind the ruling, its impact on local manufacturers and jobs, and the possible consequences for pricing and choice for South African consumers. The red mic light is stuck on… permanently. So today’s show is being held together with duct tape. It’s Monday Winners & Losers, Things That Make You Go Grrr & we played Baby Boomer movies in Timewasters. Plus, Christian’s glasses actually broke mid show after Patsy had just been celebrating her new ones. All that, and somehow we stayed on air. Neil Austin of Xeros Technology: This Technology Should Feature in Every Washing MachineXeros Technology was recognized for its innovation by TIME magazine, which named its technology one of the "Best Inventions" in 2010.Whilst it has taken a long time to commercialise this technology, it is as relevant (arguably more so) in today's world as it was in 2010.Its IP protected tech can reduce water usage by up to 80%, energy & chemical consumption by up to 50% plus it can also improve a garments lifecycle by 100%.Why this company is worth researching now is because they have just raised money which could take them to profitability and have also signed a significant contract with a major washing machine manufacturer (in the top 10 of the world and are in discussions with 3 others). To find out more about Xeros Technology #XSG visit their website:https://xerostech.com/Nothing in the podcast should be considered as investment advice. How do you identify and act on the biggest levers in your environmental footprint? In this episode, Marcel Niederberger, Head of Sustainability, and Marc Vetterli, Sustainability Expert in Engineering, explain how V-ZUG used life cycle assessment to discover that material intensity (and not just energy efficiency) drives environmental impact in home appliances. What you'll hear in this episode: • Why it is essential to carry on life-cycle assessments of all products. • The development process behind high-quality recycled ABS for visible white panels in washing machines and dryers, and its scalability. • V-ZUG's self-imposed CO2 penalty that funds fundamental research and early-stage circular projects. The episode also explores practical implementation topics, including closing material loops with suppliers, designing for reuse across product generations, and building competitive advantage. This episode concludes the "Recycled Plastics for Premium Brands" series, sponsored by HolyPoly. The series focused on the practicalities of using technical recyclates in long-lasting, high quality products.

What happens when technology grows faster than the rules meant to guide it? We toast the season finale by tackling that question head-on—starting with a bold move to centralize AI regulation at the federal level and preempt state-by-state rules. We lay out what a single national framework could fix, what it could break, and how lobbying from the biggest AI players complicates the path forward. Uniform standards might speed innovation and reduce compliance chaos, but local expertise matters, and trust depends on safeguards that balance industry power with public interest. Then we shift from policy to pavement. Waymo keeps making headlines for the wrong reasons: riders passing out in driverless cars, a recall tied to passing stopped school buses with flashing lights, and a bizarre three-car standoff that jammed a steep San Francisco street for nearly an hour. We unpack what these incidents reveal about human behavior in autonomous systems, the limits of remote intervention, and the public's patience when “driverless” becomes neighborhood gridlock. Safety updates and voluntary recalls are essential, but accountability, transparency, and resilient design are how this technology earns the right to scale. Not everything is caution tape and traffic cones. We spotlight the AirFly Pro 2 from Twelve South, a small Bluetooth transmitter that lets two people share audio from any 3.5 mm jack—perfect for flights, older TVs, and road trips. It's simple, reliable, and exactly the kind of travel tech that quietly improves your day. We also marvel at a $380,000 “human washing machine”—part luxury, part lab experiment—hinting at future wellness and eldercare tech where biometrics and comfort meet. And we raise a glass to a standout Jack Daniel's single barrel heritage barrel release, trading tasting notes on char, sweetness, and that long, confident finish.Along the way we nod to Perl's enduring place in internet history, reminding ourselves that the tools that last aren't always the flashiest—they're the ones that solve real problems again and again. As we wrap season seven, the through-line is clear: when tech outruns law, human behavior fills the void. The best builders anticipate that gap, and the best policy keeps pace without strangling the spark. If that balance excites you as much as it challenges you, you're our kind of listener.Enjoyed the season? Subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review to help others find us. In this episode, Connery DeHuff co-hosts and dives into some absurd and hilarious stories. The guys discuss bizarre things people have been caught stealing, including a whole stash of beef sticks (which Connery can totally relate to). Then, they shift gears to supermodel Kathy Ireland, who's taking on an unexpected new career—commercial fishing! Next, things get a little wild with the "human washing machine" now available in Japan. While it's a cool innovation, Connery definitely adds his own... interesting twist to the conversation. The sports section heats up as they break down the Denver Broncos' wild win over the Washington Commanders, with Bo Nix showing out. The big question: can the Broncos still make it to the playoffs with a struggling run game? Finally, LeBron James gives major props to Nikola Jokic on his podcast Mind the Game. And the hosts debate whether older drivers should be required to retake their driver's test more frequently. #Podcast #PodcastEpisode #ComedyPodcast #SportsPodcast #FunnyPodcasts #PodcastLife #ConneryDeHuff #KathyIreland #HumanWashingMachine #NikolaJokic #LeBronJames #BoNix #DenverBroncos #WashingtonCommanders #BeefSticks #OlderDriversTest #StupidThingsPeopleSteal #SupermodelTurnedFisherwoman #NFLTalk #SportsNews #DriverSafety #WeirdTech Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Wait, what? Is it time for the podcast again? Seems like only yesterday that Dan joined Elliot for the weekly rundown of the choicest hacks for the last 1/52 of a year. but here we are. We had quite a bit of news to talk about, including the winners of the Component Abuse Challenge -- warning, some components were actually abused for this challenge. They're also a trillion pages deep over at the Internet Archive, a milestone that seems worth celebrating. As for projects, both of us kicked things off with "Right to repair"-adjacent topics, first with a washing machine that gave up its secrets with IR and then with a car that refused to let its owner fix the brakes. We heated things up with a microwave foundry capable of melting cast iron -- watch your toes! -- and looked at a tiny ESP32 dev board with ludicrously small components. We saw surveyors go to war, watched a Lego sorting machine go through its paces, and learned about radar by spinning up a sonar set from first principles. Finally, we wrapped things up with another Al Williams signature "Can't Miss Articles" section, with his deep dive into the fun hackers can have with the now-deprecated US penny, and his nostalgic look at pneumatic tube systems.

This week we're discussing the remaining albums by Sonic Youth. This era covers everything from 1994 until their breakup in 2011. Aside from a couple of exceptions, not many of their most well known albums are in this era, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of worth here. Even though Sonic Youth isn't a band for everyone, they have a style that is unmistakable and continued to push themselves until the very end. What makes washing machines such a vital household invention in the modern world? How did washing machines transform household chores from 8-12 hours to a fraction of that time? Could you explain the role of water temperature in washing effectiveness and fabric care? Why do some fabrics, like suits, require special cleaning methods instead of traditional washing machine cycles? ... we explain like I'm five Thank you to the r/explainlikeimfive community and in particular the following users whose questions and comments formed the basis of this discussion: peteymcpetey, trutheality, flashwastaken, draftstone, caliph_ate, silverbolt2000, danielfaa, unique_username1. British Sikh engineer, Navjot Sawhney gave up his lucrative career to go and work in India, to use his skills to help solve problems for rural communities. While there, he became fascinated with the problems his neighbour, Divya, was facing while handwashing clothes, sometimes for up to three hours a day.Broadcaster and journalist Nkem Ifejika finds out how Nav promised to design a hand crank, off-grid washing machine for his neighbour, to help her avoid the sore joints, aching limbs, and irritated skin she got from her daily wash. Within two years of coming up with the idea, Nav had set up his own company, The Washing Machine Project, and trialled his first machine in a refugee camp in Iraq. From that first trip, over five years ago, the project has now provided nearly a thousand machines, free to the users in poorer communities and refugee camps, in eleven countries around the world. Nkem hears how seven years on, Nav fulfilled his promise to return to India with a machine for his neighbour, Divya. The Washing Machine Project is now partnered with the Whirlpool Foundation, the social corporate responsibility arm of the company that designed the first electric domestic machine over a hundred years ago, and together they hope to impact 150,000 people.Nkem asks if a project like this can really make a difference, given that roughly five billion people still wash their clothes by hand.Producer: Alex Strangwayes-Booth A CTVC productionImage: Navjot Sawhney sitting between two hand crank, off grid washing machines. It Hour Tua time, and we are all in on the football talk… how the Dolphins played in their preseason game over the weekend, and Leroy gives us insight on what it feels like when a guy is trying to punch the ball out of your hands to force a fumble… Let's just say Leroy has had a couple of broken ribs! Tobin sparks the conversation about whether or not there is a backup QB competition going on between Ewers and Wilson… and somehow we end up with Leroy annoyed by Tobin's analogy about a washing machine? We round out the hour with a good old fashion debate of old vs. new as Tobin wasn't happy to see them using virtual measurements, surprisingly Leroy is on the side of technology while Tobin and Brittney say there is no better feeling then seeing the chains come out to measure yardage!

Welcome back to All One Song, A Neil Young Podcast presented by Aquarium Drunkard. We're spending the summer talking to a few of our favorite artists and writers about their favorite Neil Young song. This week, we've got someone very special: Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Steve spent about 25 years behind the drum kit for Sonic Youth as the band radically redefined and reimagined rock and roll. He's easily one of the greatest drummers of the past four decades, as heard on such classics as Sister, Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, Murray Street, and beyond. His style is explosive, sensitive and always imaginative. Steve is so much fun to listen to, in pretty much any context. Since Sonic Youth called it quits, Steve has kept incredibly busy, not only managing the ever-expanding SY archives, but also playing with his former bandmates Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, Can vocalist Malcolm Mooney, Bush Tetras, Tape Hiss and the forthcoming Orcutt / Shelley / Miller LP coming out on Silver Current Records later this year. We've heard this one already and it is absolutely fantastic. Steve also currently is handling drumming duties for the killer Winged Wheel. For those of you seeing Neil at Bethel Woods in upstate New York on August 24 this year, be sure to get there a little early. Winged Wheel will be warming things up on a separate stage, which is sure to be amazing. Now, the topic has already come up in previous episodes — Sonic Youth's early 1991 tour with Neil Young & Crazy Horse, which saw both bands bringing their ear-shredding, feedback-laced sound to arenas across North America. Steve goes deep into that never-to-be-repeated moment in time plenty over the course of our discussion. But we also talk plenty about Steve's All One Song selection, "Vampire Blues." A song that just so happens to have inspired the name of Steve's record label, too. "Vampire Blues" was released in the summer of 1974 on the classic Ditch LP On The Beach. A seedy, bluesy shuffle, it seems to be sung from the point of view of an oil tycoon of some sort; though it doesn't really sound like it at first, this is one of Neil's ecological songs. He barely ever played it live at first, but he's revived it in the past decade or so; it showed up most recently in solo electric guise on the Coastal soundtrack. Republican Georgia Rep. Andrew Clyde is the lead sponsor of the joint resolution of disapproval H.J. Res. 42, which aims to nullify a rule issued by the DOE on October 9, 2024 under former President Joe Biden which added new efficiency and reporting regulations for appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and AC units. Sen. Jon Husted forwarded the resolution to the House, where it passed on March 5 on a bipartisan vote. “I am hereby instructing Secretary Lee Zeldin to immediately go back to my Environmental Orders, which were terminated by Crooked Joe Biden, on Water Standards and Flow pertaining to SINKS, SHOWERS, TOILETS, WASHING MACHINES, DISHWASHERS, etc., and to likewise go back to the common sense standards on LIGHTBULBS, that were put in place by the Trump Administration, but terminated by Crooked Joe,” President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on February 11. “I look forward to signing these Orders. THANK YOU!!!” Source: dailycaller.com https://twitter.com/unusual_whales/status/1917931259642429539 Following Massive Surge in First Quarter USA Purchases, Chinese Manufacturing Output Now Drops in Second Quarter Remember, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) of the first quarter is a hindsight review. Meaning the information released today was based on activity in January, February and March 2025.U.S. companies surged the purchasing of import goods, mostly from China, by more than 50% in the first quarter. They were/are building inventory. So, what happens in China starting in April? Hong Kong, CNN – The U.S. has front-loaded the inventory. So, orders to China drop now. It's a natural outcome. We have purchased goods in advance. So, orders to China drop. As a result, the cargo shipments from China to the USA drop in April, May and June. It's not that U.S. consumers don't have the product to purchase; the reality is the product is already here, awaiting purchase. to retain an oppositional perspective toward Donald Trump, the media narrative will not look back at the 50% surge in first quarter purchases; they will only look at the severe drop in second-quarter orders. With less being ordered, the media will now say the Trump tariffs are hurting consumers, deliveries to ports are substantially less, without ever mentioning the products are already here. On the upside, there will be a massive rebound in Second Quarter GDP as the imports have dropped; meaning there is less to deduct. However,
