The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Getting into the sports industry by learning the revenue creation side of the business - that's our topic today with Kelsey Smith, Tampa Bay Lightning Account Executive.Hi everybody I'm Brian Clapp, Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast…When do you get started? How do you figure out what you want to do?These are some of the most common questions I get each and every week from fans – what is surprising to most is that they are intertwined. You figure out what you want in your sports career by getting started doing something. So ask yourself what is available? Is there an athletic department at your college or university? Likely there is, so get involved – try media relations, communication, sales, sports information, ticket sales, operations, recruiting, fundraising. What about a minor league baseball team, or basketball team – is there a golf event nearby? Road race?By getting involved as early and often as you can, you figure out what you like and what you don't like.Say you worked in sports information at your college and figured out…nope not for me! That doesn't mean it was a waste of time, quite the opposite, it means it was time well spent.. because what if you spent your entire college career planning for ajob in sports information, then got a job and hated it.Now what? You're out of school not like you can change course with ease! The earlier you get started the better suited you are to figure out your logical path. Don't get crazy about exactly what, where or how --- just get in there and start doing!I've known too many people that waited and waited and waited…and then the moment passed them by.To further clarify this point – this week I'm bringing on friend of the podcast Kelsey Smith – Kelsey is in her second year as a Master's student at University of South Florida and already has 10 legitmate experiences on her resume, including the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Lightning. And you know what… she's changed career objectives over that time, because by doing the job she learned what she didn't like which is just as valuable as what she did.Listen in and learn from this high riser in the sports industry – here's Kelsey Smith!Questions for Aspiring MiLB General Manager Kelsey Smith1: The first thing I notice about you Kelsey, is that you have a clear vision for who you want to be – the very first words on your LinkedIn profile say “Future Minor League Baseball General Manager” – how important has it been for you to have clarity in your goals?A: When and how did you figure out who you wanted to be?B: Since you know where you want to end up, has it made your decisions on subjects like – where to intern, what courses to take – has it made those choices easier?2: You completed your undergrad at Miami Ohio from 2013-2017 – and right away in 2013 you began interning in the Athletic Department – what was that experience like as a freshman new to college but thrusting yourself into your career.3: After that you worked for the Hamilton Joes collegiate summer league baseball team in their communication department, then as a sports information director for the Miami of Ohio swimming and diving team, then for Penn FC in media relations – all during your undergrad – you were hella focused. These are varied roles, how important was it for you to get exposure to many different things in the industry in order to figure out what you really wanted?4: All this on your resume by the time you finished your undergrad – but instead of joining the workforce, you went for your Master's – why?5: You and I have spoken before about Master's programs and I feel many programs don't do a good job preparing people for the real world – they don't provide real experience, or hands on application of the classroom experience – but you've staunchly defended the University of South Florida program, why is that program different in your eyes and why did you choose it?6: OK,
Lots of wins to talk about this week. In the third segment, Slape, Ben, and Andy preview Nashville's upcoming match in the 4th Round of the US Open Cup, as the Boys In Gold host MLS side Colorado Rapids. Matt and Steve are talking about this week in sports updates, including: The Riverhounds took its first USL loss of the season 1-0 to Nashville, but had a 0-0 tie with Penn FC after. The Riverhounds returned home for the weekend with the Richmond Kickers. Pitt Baseball made it to the Final 4 of the ACC tournament, but lost to Louisville. It seems that the ACC has elevated PITT in smaller non-mainstream collegiate athletics. Mark Madden wrote an article on Sullivan and Kessel. In PGA news, it's the last week in the Forth Worth Invitational. Justin Rose won with a -20. Steve got to check out some of the Memorial at Muirfield Village “Jack's Place” It's fun to see the pros do some of the same things Steve does. The NHL Stanley Cup Finals! Game one went to the Knights with a back-and-forth game with a 6-4 final, and game two went to the Caps 3-2. Tom Wilson of the Caps had a few questionable hits in game one - especially the one on Jonathan Marchessault. Ryan Reaves' punch to the nose in front of the Caps net in game two sent a message to the not-so-nice Wilson. The NBA Finals started. It's the 4th straight year of the Warriors and Cavs in the final. The first game went to overtime, and Lebron had some issues with it. Hill made the tying free throw and missed the second with 5 seconds left on the clock. Cleveland passed the ball around and looked like they were playing keep-away to protect a win they didn't have. On the replay, JR Smith said he thought they were ahead. In OT the Warriors go on a 7-0 run, and end up with Klay Thomson ejected and the Cavs losing. Steelers' OTAs continue and the rookies are getting to learn the play book and figure out their exact positions. Jerald Hawkins, the back-up OT, was carried off the field with a ruptured quad. Third pick, Oakafore, is now up for the position. Jake McGee also limped off the field with injury. Most of the stars of the team (the “Skilled Position Players”) were absent for the second week of OTA’s, but that was no shocker. 1978 throwbacks. The Pirates lost 2 of 3 to the Reds, 2 of 3 to the Cards, and 2 of 3 to the Cubs with some drama on the base pads in the Cubs series. The Buccos are still above 500 by 2 games and 6.5 back in the division. The offense was solid, Polanco had a 3-hit night. Cervele and Bell went yard, but Vasquez gave up the winning HR in the 9th. The Pirates sitting Austin Medows when Marte came back over Polanco might be a mistake. The bullpen is suspect, and the offense has cooled a bit with some brained moves on the base pads. A lot of games to discuss on this week's episode! In the first segment we review Nashville SC's 3-1 win over Mississippi Brilla in the 3rd round of the US Open Cup. We talk positives and negatives, and share postgame comments from striker Brandon Allen and manager Gary Smith. We also review Nashville SC's 1-1 draw away to Charleston Battery. Although a frustrating game to watch, we talk about why it was a good result and a decent point on the road. In the second segment, Slape sits down with Justin Ashcraft of the Mongoals Podcast to talk about Wednesday's upcoming game away to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Check out their preview and the full episode here: Mon Goals Preview Show In the third segment, we break down the game in Pittsburgh, as well as Nashville's home re-match against Penn FC on Saturday, as well as FC Cincinnati's recent announcement as the next MLS expansion side. Matt and Steve are talking about this week in sports updates, including: The Riverhounds tied 2-2 with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. They took on FC Cincinnati in The US Open Cup and ended in a 3-1 loss. The Riverhounds are on the road to face Penn FC. Pittsburgh is currently in 4th place with a 9, 12, 5, 17 record. F Romeo Parkes was named to USL Team of the Week after his first goal of the season. The PGA played at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas for the Bryon Nelson Classic. 21-year-old Aaron Wise (South African) took home 1.39 Million and his first win on the PGA Tour. Wise's mom travels with him and when he was in the lead after day 3 he had to make her leave the room during the 4-hr rain delay prior to his Tee Time. His final score was -23 for the tournament. It's time for the Fort Worth Inv. at the Colonial Course in Texas as we're gearing up for the Memorial at Muirfield Village in Columbus. The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore was a rainy, foggy, muddy mess with Justify by a 1/2 length to win. Bob Baffert (Trainer) is on his bid for his second Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes in Belmont Park. American Pharoah ended the 37-year drought three years ago. Baffert is now tied with 14 triple crown wins as a trainer and could only be the second trainer to have 2 Triple Crown winners. Belmont is the longest of the 3 races and is the hardest to win. The Vegas Golden Knights move on to the Stanley Cup Final over the Winnipeg Jets. The Caps/Lightning had a very exciting game 7 with the Caps moving on to the final. Of course Pittsburgh is with the Knights mainly because of Fleury, but some other former Pens are on the team as well. Football OTAs have begun and the vets are meeting the rookies and invited free agents for the first time. There is no sign of Lev Bell, and we don't expect him 'til after camp. They have until July 15th to reach a long-term deal. These are voluntary to attend. Nashville is selected to host the 2019 NFL Draft, and Arizona is selected to hold Super Bowl LVII and New Orleans to host Super Bowl LVIII. Rodger Goodell and the NFL have implemented the new standard and rule regarding the national anthem. All personnel on the field during ceremonies must stand and show respect for the anthem, and if they choose not to stand they are able to stay in the locker room or like area off the field for the opening ceremonies. If anyone doesn't stand and show respect for the anthem, the organization will be fined. Each organization can make its own work rule regarding the situation. The commissioner will impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect. Does this still leave open what is considered respect or disrespect? The Buccos have dropped 3 in a row to the Padres, and 1 to the Reds and pulled out an extra inning win. The Bucs have been beating the teams that they should, until now. The bullpen is still suspect, but the offense has cooled off. The Bucs were in first place for a day or so, but are now 3 games back in the division. The NL Central is one of the weakest divisions in the MLB. The much awaited call-up of Austin Meadows has been worth the wait. he is 5-11 with 2 homers. Manager, Clint Hurdle, says he is being aggressive, seeing pitches. Clint summed it up in two words: Visualization and Confidence.
