Album Review - Mosaic

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2023 6:39

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate. Today we're bringing you another metal album review, featuring the latest from US metallers Theocracy titled Mosaic. Let's take a dive into this release track-by-track… Mosaic goes right for the throat with the rapid-paced opener “Flicker” which is reminiscent of Dragonforce in its versing. Here we hear the first of many masterful lead breaks executed by new guitarist Taylor Washington, who some might know as frontman for the band Paladin. The next track, “Anonymous,” is classic Theocracy. The vocal melody in the chorus is just a tad sugary for my taste, but fits with the overall vibe of the song and I do love that final shout vocalist Matt Smith gives at the end. There's also some sturdy riffs scattered throughout by guitarists Washington and Hinds. Third on the listing is the title track “Mosaic,” which was released in advance and in music video format. The song starts softly and then hits hard with Unleash The Arches worthy riffs and leads. I really enjoy the overall feel of that's created by the band: killer from start to finish with galloping guitars and beautiful, subtle overtones. The next track on the docket is “Sinsidius (Gods Of War).” If found the song bit disjointed at points but it's still kind of a banger, and definitely one of the heavier tracks on the album. I'm not sure everything works perfectly on this song, but I really appreciate that Theocracy tried a lot different things. Speaking for myself, sometimes the imperfect experiment is more appealing than the safe sure thing, and ultimately it works enough to makes it a fav of mine on the album. In contrast, “Turn To Dust” is much more traditionally structured – a very straightforward and incredibly catchy track. That main riff is a killer, and I am in love with Washington's solo. I hear hints of “Breaking The Chains” era Dokken in this one. “Turn To Dust” is followed by “The 6th Great Extinction.” Another song where the chorus is slightly too sweet vocally for my taste, although the killer lead makes up for any shortcomings. The band channel Iron Maiden on the intro to “Deified,” which is another fast paced rocker. This song does a great job of creating some dramatic build-ups, with the guitars adding jubilant bursts of sound. The chorus brings it home for the most part, although the track loses some of its steam at the end. “The Greatest Hope” is a brief, ballady track. More than just an interlude, but light in delivery as a full song. Smith's voice is beautiful but I wasn't a fan of the melody or pacing used here. The acoustic guitar really didn't do much for me – I probably would have preferred this one with more orchestrations supporting the vocals instead. Thereafter we find the somewhat schizophrenic “Liar, Fool, or Messiah.” For me there's a bit of a disconnect between the verses and chorus – they just feel like they're not quite on the same page. The vocals though are really strong on both counts. The album finale is “Red Sea” – a 19 minute monster that truly delivers. I won't try to summarize this epic which contains more music than most Eps, but I will say it's a cohesive song – not merely an amalgam of musical ideas that you sometimes get with such efforts. I love the production, particularly the amazing guitar tone and well-crafted, nuanced keys. Washington's lead guitarwork is fantastic and longstanding drummer Ernie Topran executes quite well throughout keeping things interesting rhythmically. Smith hits all the notes just right and belts the lyrics with amazing passion. He's a gem of a singer who sadly has been hidden under a bushel basket as far as popular recognition. This is great stuff, and more than competitive with more recent efforts by Blind Guardian, Beast In Black, or Gloryhammer. I think this is the best album Theocracy have ever put out – I'm giving Mosaic a 9 out of 10.

Just a few weeks ago, New Orleans' own Big Freedia debuted her new series, Big Freedia Means Business. The show follows the Queen of Bounce's new music and entrepreneurial endeavors since her last documentary series, “Big Freedia Bounces Back.”  We spoke to Big Freedia in January, ahead of the show's release. Today, we listen back to that conversation.  This month marks 157 years since a deadly riot at the Mechanics Institute, when a mob of white former Confederates attacked a group of Black residents marching for their right to vote, resulting in nearly 50 deaths and over 100 injuries. And while the event, which has come to be known as the New Orleans Massacre, was undeniably tragic, many argue it shaped positive Reconstruction-era policies.  To remember this story, we bring you an episode of the Tripod Podcast, where NPR's Laine Kaplan-Levinson aims to uncover the truth about this event and explore the relevance today.  Content creator Joshua Darien started making videos on TikTok about Southern urban legends last summer. But the story leading up to this latest Spider-Man movie has been its own epic saga. When Marvel licensed the Spider-Man film rights to Sony Pictures in the 1990s, the deal made sense — Marvel didn't make movies yet, and their business was mainly about making comic books and toys. Years later, though, the deal would come back to haunt Marvel, and it would start a long tug of war between Sony and Marvel over who should have creative cinematic control of Marvel's most popular superhero. Today, we break down all of the off-screen drama that has become just as entertaining as the movies themselves. This episode was originally produced by Nick Fountain with help from Taylor Washington and Dave Blanchard. While women were granted the right to vote in 1920 with the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, that right was not easily protected for Black women. Back when Jazz Fest first began in New Orleans in 1970, many said there were more performers than guests in attendance. But over the years, more attendees, performers, and vendors found themselves at the Fairgrounds each spring, building exciting and meaningful experiences. And for nearly a decade, LSU Libraries has been capturing Jazz Fest memories in their oral history archive. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Monday August 23rd.   Millions of businesses across the country received financial relief during the pandemic through The Paycheck Protection Program. And those that used it to pay employees are eligible for 100 percent forgiveness.    Today - we dig into the loans that were given to Colorado businesses.   Before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today we're going back to August 23rd, 1883 when a grand jury indicted three men on charges of murder in an infamous intersection of crime and politics. The trouble started as a struggle between two county Republican politicians John Mills and Edward Weber who battled over many things including county seats and gubernatorial candidates.  The feud boiled over when Mills, the local sheriff, and two other accomplices ambushed and gunned down Weber and two associates. Mills also perished in the fighting.   The murderous scandal astonished the state and nearly led to the abolition Grand County altogether.    Now, our feature story.    The federal Paycheck Protection Program loans provided nearly $800 billion in financial relief for millions of U.S. businesses during the pandemic. The attraction was that if the money was used to pay employees, it would be eligible for 100 percent forgiveness. Colorado Sun reporter Tamara Chuang has been tracking these PPP loans in Colorado since the program launched in April 2020. In July, the Small Business Administration began sharing data on which businesses have received forgiveness. Tamara is joined by Taylor Washington in today's podcast and they share what it was like to dig into the numbers and write the story.   Tamara and Taylor's Paycheck Protection forgiveness story has more than a dozen charts detailing what happened to Colorado's $15.1 billion in PPP loans. Find this story and more at coloradosun.com   Thanks for listening. Finally, here are a few stories you should know about today:   Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters is reportedly in hiding after allegedly receiving threats related to a security breach in her election office. About 250 people from across Colorado showed up in Grand Junction on Saturday to support the embattled clerk, who is accused of facilitating the public release of elections system passwords and copies of the system's hard drives. Peters' election office is under investigation by the Colorado Secretary of State, the FBI and the Mesa County district attorney. About 87,000 Colorado residents will lose their unemployment pay when federal benefits expire on Sept. 4. Another 29,000 people will lose the $300 federal bonus paid to anyone on unemployment. As the clock runs out on the aid to jobless people, the state labor department is working to help them find jobs. One of the ways is through the state job board at connectingcolorado.com where there were more than 118,000 openings posted as of Sunday morning.  Tiny Mineral County posted one of the biggest population gains according to 2020 Census data released last week. But officials in the central mountain community say they don't have more people today than 10 years ago, it's just that they did a better job counting this time around. County administrator Janelle Kukuk was worried Mineral County was going to lose out on crucial federal funds if the population was undercounted so she called every property owner in the 865-person community and served as tech support for those who were having trouble filling out forms. That resulted in a 153 person gain, which Kukuk says is a big deal. For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Now, a quick message from our editor. McComb School District down in McComb, Mississippi doesn’t just believe in the power of technology when it comes to personalized learning. In fact, for superintendent Dr. Cederick Ellis and Summit Elementary School principal Lakya Taylor-Washington, the bigger asset in going personalized comes down to removing arbitrary grade level assignments and creating “learning labs,” a style of competency-based learning that Summit has been experimenting with since 2015. At Summit, “scholars” are grouped by readiness and performance—not by traditional grade levels—and indicate evidence of mastery by completing projects at their own pace. In theory, the rollout and success of this instructional approach sounds feasible, but oftentimes, it’s the adults who explain how the program works—without the opinions or inputs of students. How about Summit students adjusting to the change? What do they like? What do they wish was different? In order to hear exactly how different stakeholders feel about this competency-based system, EdSurge brought two Summit students, Kianna and Patricia, together with Ellis and Taylor-Washington to ask the question: “Do students, principals and superintendents all see eye-to-eye on saying goodbye to grade levels?”
