Episode 5: 'Clean Water' Mission Two large-scale projects have been implemented by the Municipality of Shumen with the help of European funding. After nearly four decades, the wastewater treatment plant has started operation, as wastewater no longer pollutes the local environment and the adjacent water basins. Bulgaria is one of the EU member states eligible for support from the Cohesion Fund. In addition, in the new programming period, Bulgaria disposes of over BGN 3.2 billion under the fund. The Clean Water Mission is already in its final stage - the construction of a drinking water treatment plant. In the autumn of last year, another large-scale project with European funding was launched. It is now only months until the residents of Shumen will be able to drink clean tap water in their homes thanks to European solidarity and the joint efforts of all stakeholders. What are the expectations and what is the reality? Learn more from the report made in co-authorship between Stoyan Stoyanov, reporter in Radio Shumen, and Violeta Ashikova, reporter and deputy editor-in-chief of the BNR Horizon program. Vratsa and St.Zagora: these are 2 municipalities on the path of modernizing their urban environment via complete electrification of the local public transport with one goal in mind – convenience for their residents and visitors, construction of neighborhoods with healthy climates, energy-efficient buildings which not only consume but also produce energy, electric charging stations, electric cars, electric buses and modern trolleybuses. All this is being done to achieve zero harmful emissions in Europe by 2050 in compliance with the Euro Green Pact The European Commission has envisaged huge funds for the electrification of transport under the Cohesion Fund and the Environment Operational Programme. All it takes is initiative and entrepreneurship on the part of local and national authorities. Bulgaria is to receive BGN 2 billion more than in the previous programming period for development and modernization of its transport infrastructure In their efforts the municipalities of Vratsa and St. Zagora are working on projects to upgrade their transport systems, introduce innovative urban traffic management systems, replace currently operating vehicles with fully electrified ones and upgrade the overhead line Local residents respond readily to the policies for modernizing the transport system and a greener urban environment A problem on the way to the implementation of the projects is the appeal of the tender procedures, which slows down the work but does not stop the process entirely The first new trolleybuses in Vratsa are expected in June. The contract for the implementation of the project is worth BGN 32 million. Of these, 26 million are grants, and the remainder will be covered by own funds of Vratsa municipality. It was signed in 2019 with an implementation period of 3 years
