WELCOME BACK! HAPPY NEW YEAR!   The day is near! The time is right! It's time for the #ELOsoFumarTakes Top 10 Cigars of 2023!   Once again, the legendary George Brightman joins us for the Top 10 Countdown for the ages!  I've sent George my top ten cigars for him to sample and taste test blind.  He gives an honest breakdown alongside my own assessments, Enjoy!   Criteria: 1) It's vitola based. 2) I had to have smoked the cigar for the first time in the last year and a half.* 3) It must not suck. 4)No limited edition cigars (i.e. TAA, shop exclusive) are eligible. 5) A previous number 1 cigar winner (blend-specific, i.e. 2017 Winner Espinosa Habano) cannot be on this year's Top 10 or repeat as winner.* 6) A company cannot have more than 1 cigar on the Top 10, however, may be considered for honorable mention.* 7)THE BIG ONE: frequency of smoke. Basically, I had to have the means AND opportunity AND did, in fact, smoke the cigar frequently.   Just to review, here is last year's list: Top 10 2022: : 1) Espinosa Crema Box Press Toro 2) Artista Cigars Buffalo Ten Connecticut 3) St. Luis Rey Carenas Toro 4) Howard G Magic Stick Cameroon Toro 5) CAVALIER GENÈVE BII Japala Viso Robusto Gordo 6) Crux Bull & Bear Double Corona 7) Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Brulee Blue 8) Rocky Patel Disciple Robusto 9) The Arrival Robusto 10) Luciano Cigars (ACE Prime) The Seargeant   Honorable Mentions 2023: Macanudo Flint Knoll Churchill Black Label La Madonna Negra Atabey 10th Anniversary 601 La Bomba Warhead VIII Ferio Tego Timeless Limited 10 Years     Top 10 Cigars of 2023 (this year): 1) Gran Habano 20th Anniversaro Edicion Limitada El Sueno Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo Shade Wrapper Binder: Nicaraguan Filler Nicaraguan, Colombian, and Peruvian Country of Origin: Honduras Factory: GR Tabacaleras Unidas SA 2) Luciano Cigars Maria Lucia Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Binders (Double): Sumatra Ecuador / HBN 92 Ecuador Fillers: Nicaragua, Dominican, and Peru Country of Origin: Nicaragua Factory: Luciano Cigars S.A., Maria Lucia 3)Black Label Trading Co Deliverance Porcelain Robusto Wrapper: Connecticut Binder: Nicaraguan Habano Filler: Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Country of Origin: Nicaragua Factory: Fabrica Oveja Negra   4) Alec Bradley Double Broadleaf Gran Corona Wrapper: Honduran Broadleaf Binder: Honduran Broadleaf, Nicaraguan Filler: Honduran, Nicaraguan Country of Origin: Honduras Factory: Tabacos de Oriente 5) Casa Cuevas Sangre Nueva Double Perfecto Wrapper: Ecuadorian Cameroon Binder: Honduran Corojo Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan, Pennsylvania Broadleaf, Kentucky Fire Cured Country of Origin: Dominican Republic Factory: Las Lavas 6) Espinosa Knuckle Sandwich Connecticut Short Churchhill Factory: San Lotano Factory Wrapper: Ecuador (Connecticut) Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua   7) Quesada Cigars Liga F toro Wrapper: Ecuadorian Corojo (Sun Grown) Binder: Dominican Filles: Dominican, Nicaraguan Country of Origin: Dominican Republic Factory: TABADEX (Quesada Cigars Factory) 8) HVC Selección No. 1 Natural Poderosos Wrapper: Habano '92 Ecuador Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan Country of Origin: Nicaragua Factory: Fabrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. 9) United Toro Maduro Wrapper:  Mexican San Andres (Maduro) Binder: Dominican Filler: Dominican Broadleaf, Quisqueya, Dominican Seco, Dominican Olor Country of Origin: Dominican Republic Factory: Tabacalera Magia 10) Kristoff Cigars Guardrail Robusto Wrapper: Brazilian Arapiraca Binder: Dominican Filler: Burma Valley Zimbabwe, Dominican Country of Origin: Dominican Republic Factory: Tabacalera Von Eicken (Charles Fairmorn)

Coming in at #10 is the Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Brimstone Un Presidente. Southern Draw lands on the 2021 Countdown for a second time. Much like the #18 ranked Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale was an offshoot of the Rose of Sharon line, the Brimstone is an offshoot of the Jacobs Ladder line. Notably, it's the second year in a row each of these blends have placed on the Countdown. Like the original Jacobs Ladder, the Brimstone uses a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper. The remainder of the blend is different. The binder is a USA Maduro and a filler that consists of triple ligero Nicaraguan tobaccos. Late in 2020, Southern Draw introduced a massive 9 x 48 line extension dubbed "Un Presidente." It's easily the longest cigar since the Debonaire 33rd Maduro landed #2 in 2015. Last year, it was the Brimstone Perfecto that landed on the list at #9. Brimstone was originally positioned as a bolder version of the powerhouse Jacobs Ladder blend, but over time I saw the Perfecto mellowed and instead became richer in flavor. In the case of the Brimstone Un Presidente, these cigars were aging in Nicaragua for over a year and already had mellowed a bit. These cigars delivered a medium strength, medium-bodied profile with notes of coffee, earth, fruit, chocolate, red pepper, and toast. It's going to take an investment in time, but it will be worth every second. 2021 is the fifth year Southern Draw Cigars has landed on the Countdown - all of those years have been consecutive since 2017. It's also the fourth time there has been an AJ Fernandez-made cigar on the Countdown. Nicaragua has been the dominant country on this year's Countdown. Of the 21 cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the 15th one from Nicaragua. For details of the 2021 Cigar of the Year Countdown, see our 2021 criteria: https://cigar-coop.com/2021/12/announcement-criteria-for-the-2021-cigar-of-the-year-countdown.html Cigar Coop Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-lJB

Chris Cannon, who earlier asked Bob and Dale how they would spend $50 to obtain a variety of cigar flavors, gives an update to his progress. Listener Loren Molders reviews the new La Casita Criolla. The August winner of a Palio cutter is Gregory Dunn from Massachusettes. Congratulations Gregory! Starting in October, we will be revising the Palio contest so start thinking now. We will be looking for photos of you and your friends enjoying cigars with every entry. The featured 'Cigar of the Week' is the Master by Carlos Torano. The 'What's My Band?' cigar is the La Aurora Cameroon Double Corona suggested by Dan Crouch. Check out the live show! Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/live/ where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST. Cigar of the Week - Master by Carlos Torano From the Carlos Torano web site: A perfect collaboration creates a new premium Cigar. Charlie Toraño, at the helm of a fourth generation family cigar company, and Felipe Sosa, one of the world's finest master cigar rollers, invite you to enjoy this unique blend. Determining the final blend for Master was a long and experimental journey. With two passionate tobacco experts working side by side, only the very best blend would suffice and ultimately be worthy of the name "Master". Wrapper: Habano from Ecuador Binder: Esteli, Nicaragua Filler: Esteli & Jalapa, Nicaragua What else have you been smokin' Dale? Liga Privada L40 - 7 x 40 Lancero - Finally, the LP blend in a Lancero size! Although admittedly tweaked for this format (from 38 ring to 40 ring to add an extra leaf), the LP blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos is bound by a Brazilian Mata Fina leaf and a Connecticut Sun Grown Habano wrapper. Pre-light aroma is very barnyard/earthy with deep rich scents not unlike opening a tin of English pipe tobacco. From the start this cigar provides blasts of spice over a woody, leathery core. Also touches of coffee and dark fruit. Not perfectly balanced in the first ½” or so, but smooths out and balances the spice with the other flavors the rest of the way. Full bodied, full flavored and leaning towards the strong side, yet never gets harsh or bitter. This format now beats the T52 as my favorite Liga Privada - more refined and complex with a tad less strength. La Carrida del Cobre Jabalina - 7.25 x 38 Lancero One of the “Vitolas Especiales” our friend Frank Herrera has added to his line, this lancero has a closed foot and head, both with a sharply pointed end, thus the Jabalina (Javalin) moniker. The fillers are Dominican and Nicaraguan, the binder is of the Criollo ‘98 variety and the wrapper is a Pennsylvania Broadleaf maduro. The sample I smoked last Sunday at the 2nd Annual Rocky Mountain Cigar Fest was entirely hand bunched w/o the benefit of a mold and exhibited perfect construction! Molds for regular production will be delivered soon and these will be available this fall. Very smooth and med-full bodied with medium strength. The flavors are savory and complex. Another outstanding LCDC cigar in a fantastic format! My Father El Hijo San Lotano Oval - 6 x 54 Toro Nicaraguan & Honduran fillers, a Nicaragua binder and a 4 yr aged Habano 2000 wrapper in a unique oval shape. Outstanding construction exhibited by a slow, cool burn that lasted over 2.5 hours! Tremendous flavors of well aged tobacco - cedar, caramel, almonds, espresso, black tea and balanced with red wine tannins. A superior cigar. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Le Bijou 1922 Petite Robusto - The petite robusto is a an exciting new size from My Father Cigars. It is a perfect way to enjoy this flavorful Le Bijou and I believe, makes it the best of the Le Bijou line and maybe the best in the My Father line as well. The cigar starts with just a hint of spice, cedar and sweetness and then transitions in to a leather and floral experience with just enough body to make you sit up and take notice. The cigar ends with a little spice again and a fond farewell to the floral leather. A 4.5 x 50 Nicaraguan Puro with a Habano Oscuro wrapper. Jameson Declaration - Brad Mayo is the living embodiment of what many every day cigar smokers aspire to - an enthusiast turned brand owner. The Declaration comes out of the Dominican Republic factory of Luis Sanchez of La Tradicion Cubana fame. Declaration was created with purpose and passion to celebrate independent spirit and personal liberty. “Smoke to be Free” is the favored catch phrase of Brad and the crew at Jameson. The Declaration features an aged Habano ’98 wrapper paired with a Criollo ’98 binder and select filler tobaccos from the prime growing regions of the Dominican Republic. This is a deep, bold flavored cigar that has a wonderful room aroma, just ask Liz. That is a nice bonus when smoking around others; however, the real prize is the deep floral and mild spice that is all wrapped in a subtle sweetness. What else have you been smokin' Craig? Cohiba 1966 - I’m normally a smart cigar smoker; I swear. This time I let my lack of patience get the best of me. I received one of these as a gift last week and lit it immediately without thinking of the cigar’s condition. My experience suffered exceptionally. I tasted nothing but generic tobacco sweetness and had to endure a rather spongy & wet smoke. The one salvageable thing I’ll take from the experience is that the wrapper leaf, when smoked separately, did exhibit some enjoyable flavors. Gran Habano (GAR) Opium - This cigar was so intriguing. It reminded me of other GHs but at the same time showed some flavors RARELY found in any N/C cigars. I can’t pinpoint what it tasted like or even what other cigars it reminded me of but whatever it was, I liked it. Look for these cigars and decide if they’re for you. I have a feeling this line might be a real sleeper among the consuming public. Look for more people to erupt about it’s terrific flavors as it becomes more widely available. What's My Band? - Unbanded #978, the La Aurora Cameroon Double Corona suggested by Dan Crouch. Bob: Pre light aroma, sweet spice, hay/grassy flavor slightly, mild cocoa and cedar flavors are very smooth and tastefuly done. Smoked with a blackberry port that really overwhelmed the cigar with its sweetness. Very cedar on the retrohale and a slightly sharp acidity. Craig: A lot of sweet spice on the start. Reminiscent of the Tatuaje Boris. The flavors left almost immediately and continued with tobacco & pepper. Nice full strength and medium body. 2nd third was very jalapa-esque. Transitioned to a more milder character & medium body. Continuing sweetness & slight coffee character. Decent cigar. If not for the Jalapa characteristics I’d enjoy it more. Palio Cutter Contest: The August winner of a classic black Palio cutter is Gregory Dunn from Massachusettes. will be announced next week. Enter the September contest now. Remember, you must re-enter each month to be eligible to win the featured Palio cutter. Starting in October, we will be revising the Palio contest so start thinking now. This week Bob and Dale are joined by special guest Bill Featherton, a long-time listener.Cigar of the Week - Panacea Green Label ToroOver a year in the making, the Panacea Green label uses a specially fermented Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper to balance out a triple Ligero filler in a very exciting 2010 release from Flatbedcigars.com.Dark Side - HOYO DE MONTERREY LE HOYO DU GOURMETOrigin: Cuba Manufactured: Hand MadeGauge: Thin Length: 170Format: Palma Ring: 33Weight: 6,76 gr. Presentation: Slide lid box of 25"Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo du Gourmet" Review:Discontinued in 2002, this cigar has what some call the "experts" size, long and slim. With a peculiar creamy sweetness, Le Hoyo du Gourmet needs to be smoked slowly so that it does not overheat, what would give the cigar a different taste than it was meant to have.Herf Line Reviews - If you call and leave a cigar review on the herf line and it is played on the show, you will receive a DogWatch Cigar Radio patch! You can reach the Herfline at 321-594-4373 - or cigar.radio on Skype. You can also send email to theshow@cigarmedia.tv.Origin of the term HERF: From Cigar Craig, http://cigarcraig.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/the-origin-of-the-word-herf/What else have you been smokin' Dale? Bow Tie Green - my last sample from BowTie Cigars, a light Conny Shade wrapped rubusto without that typical airy-grassy flavor I usually find from that wrapper. Mild bodied, lots of cedar & leather flavors and smooth. Not much complexity, but far better balanced then the other two lines. Good mid-morning cigar I'd recommend to mild cigar lovers.Famous Nicaragua 3000, 2008 - Dark flavors have smoothed over time - coffee, cocoa and some of that meaty savoryness all still come through with that Nic Zing. Still one of my favorite everyday cigars. What else have you been smokin' Bob?  Padron 1926 Torpedo - What a beautiful box pressed cigar this is. Foot aroma was distinctive barnyard. It's a complicated smoke - I mean with three bands to remove, it almost took an engineering degree to get them off with the overlap and wrap around....Gurhka Triad Churchill 7x52 - Adorned with a 10-year-old Connecticut Ecuadorian wrapper around a 7-year-old Dominican binder and a 7-year-old Nicaraguan/Honduran filler, this is one of the smoothest cigars you may ever smoke. Kaizad only made 300 boxes of these and they are a special treat. Great medium-to-mild cigar with toasty flavors of leather and sweet spices.Whats My Band - #920 from Liz, Padilla CazadoresBob - I had high expectations at the beginning of this cigar because of its light barnyard pre-aroma and good flavors of slightly bitter dry grasses. But the excitement faded as the cigar began to burn lopsided and the flavors got decidedly sour and the stench of poorly fermented tobacco came out. Could not wait to put this one down.Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week?  Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions.  Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer.  If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv.July Palio Cutter Contest Winner:  Robert Brown.  The August prize will be a gold Palio cutter!  Enter this month's contest by clicking here.  (You must be a registered member to enter.  Not a member?  Join now!)Music provided by the 25 Smokin' Figurados from their new album, "Lesson Two," and The Surfonics.
