A new Gallup poll shows that the wave of anti-immigration sentiment in the U.S. is cooling, even among Republicans, as Donald Trump's 2025 immigration policy continues his hateful purge of migrants in America. Behind deportation, there are personal stories to be shared.According to the poll, 79% of Americans say immigration is "a good thing" for the country, up from 64% a year ago, while only about 20% of adults say immigration is a bad thing, down from 32% last year.In this episode of the Lean to the Left Podcast, we explore the heart-wrenching consequences of Trump's harsh deportation policies with guest Robert Thompson. Robert shares the personal story of Miss Doris, a long-term Honduran immigrant and household cleaning lady, who is being forced to leave the country after 26 years. They discuss the broader implications of these policies on hundreds of thousands of immigrants, the cruelty of the current administration, and the necessity for collective action to hold elected officials accountable. Tune in for a powerful conversation on immigration, justice, and human compassion.CHAPTERS:00:00 Introduction to the Podcast00:21 Personal Impact of Deportation Policies00:38 Miss Doris' Story01:18 Historical Context and TPS02:16 Current Administration's Tactics04:10 Community Reactions and Broader Implications06:48 Critique of Trump's Policies10:26 Call to Action10:51 ConclusionAbout Bob Gatty Bob Gatty is a former journalist and communications consultant, the founder and editor of the Lean to the Left blog and host of this podcast. Tommy and Ben take a break from impersonating Marco Rubio to cover Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington to kiss Trump's ass, the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Qatar, the IDF's latest plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza, and shifting opinions on Israel within the Democratic Party. They also discuss Trump's confusing about-face on sending weapons to Ukraine, the continued incoherence of Trump's tariff policy and his needless antagonism of the BRICS countries. Finally, they talk about the finger-wagging at Tucker Carlson for his interview with Iran's president, the border crisis in Afghanistan, the Dalai Lama's succession plan and how China could interfere, the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia that's caused a political meltdown in Bangkok, and the administration's cruel termination of Temporary Protected Status for Hondurans and Nicaraguans. Then, Ben speaks with Representative Jason Crow about how the “Big Beautiful Bill” will tank America's global standing, intelligence in the age of Trump and Tulsi Gabbard, and where the Democratic Party needs to go on foreign policy.

This Day in Legal History: Vermont Abolishes Slavery for MenOn July 8, 1777, the Vermont Republic adopted a constitution that became the first in what would eventually become the United States to formally abolish slavery. At the time, Vermont was not yet a state—it was an independent republic formed after declaring independence from both New York and British colonial rule. The new constitution, influenced by Enlightenment principles and revolutionary ideals, declared that “no male person born in this country, or brought from over sea, ought to be held by law, to serve any person, as a servant, slave or apprentice” after the age of 21.This clause effectively outlawed slavery for adult men and set the groundwork for emancipation, although enforcement was inconsistent. Vermont's action was revolutionary, especially considering that slavery remained deeply entrenched in both the southern and northern American colonies. While other Northern states like Pennsylvania and Massachusetts would later take steps toward abolition, Vermont's constitutional ban was a bold and early legal rebuke of human bondage.Despite its symbolic significance, the legal impact was somewhat limited. Vermont did not join the Union until 1791, and historical records indicate that some slavery-like practices may have persisted unofficially. Nevertheless, the 1777 constitution established an early legal precedent for anti-slavery sentiment, showing how legal documents could be used to challenge institutional oppression. The language also hinted at the contradictions between American ideals of liberty and the reality of enslavement.Several major U.S. medical organizations filed a lawsuit on July 7 against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the HHS, challenging recent changes to federal COVID-19 vaccine policy. The plaintiffs—including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Physicians—are seeking to overturn Kennedy's directive removing COVID-19 vaccines from the CDC's immunization schedules for children and pregnant women. They argue that the move poses an immediate threat to public health and undermines evidence-based medical policy. The complaint accuses Kennedy of dismantling the federally established vaccine framework that has historically saved millions of lives. Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, took control of HHS earlier this year and has taken steps to reshape vaccine policy. In addition to altering the immunization schedules, he also dismissed all 17 members of the CDC's independent vaccine advisory committee and replaced them with seven individuals, some of whom have publicly opposed vaccination.Medical groups contend that these actions are not grounded in science and place vulnerable populations at significant risk of preventable diseases. HHS has not yet commented on the lawsuit.Medical groups sue HHS, Kennedy over vaccine policy | ReutersThe Biden administration had extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans and Nicaraguans in 2023, citing lingering effects of Hurricane Mitch, political instability, and economic hardship. But on July 7, the Department of Homeland Security under President Donald Trump announced it will end those protections effective September 6, 2025, impacting roughly 72,000 Hondurans and 4,000 Nicaraguans. TPS offers deportation relief and work permits to migrants from countries experiencing crisis, but Trump officials argue the program has been overused.Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said both countries have recovered significantly, referencing tourism, real estate, and energy developments. Critics, including Democrats and migrant advocates, say ending TPS will uproot people who have legally lived and worked in the U.S. for decades and may force them to return to dangerous or unstable conditions. The Honduran deputy foreign minister acknowledged the decision wasn't country-specific, but part of a broader rollback of TPS protections.Trump's administration has already targeted TPS designations for migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Afghanistan, and Cameroon. Legal battles continue over the policy's rollback: while the Supreme Court recently upheld ending TPS for Venezuelans, a federal judge blocked the termination for Haitians just last week.Trump to end deportation protections for thousands of Hondurans and Nicaraguans | ReutersMy column for Bloomberg this week focuses on Maryland's new 3% digital services tax, which took effect on July 1. I argue that while the state's goal of modernizing its tax base is understandable, the execution creates more problems than it solves. Rather than taxing consumption—the standard, more efficient route—Maryland is taxing business inputs like data hosting and web services. This approach violates basic tax principles, potentially stifling investment and driving up operational costs for firms doing business in the state. The administrative burden is uniquely complex. Vendors must determine how much of each service is used in Maryland, secure pre-approval for calculation methods, and issue separate certificates per transaction. No other state requires this, which leaves businesses with a costly choice: build a Maryland-specific tax compliance system, risk penalties, or exit the market entirely. The true burden, then, is not just the 3% rate, but the compliance infrastructure that must be created from scratch.Ultimately, the tax may hurt the very businesses Maryland is counting on for economic growth. Consumers may face higher prices, companies may route around the state, and the tax may collapse under its own administrative weight. I argue that the smarter path forward lies in multistate coordination, where shared definitions and harmonized rules could make enforcement more efficient and less distortionary. Without collaboration, Maryland risks substituting short-term revenue for long-term competitiveness. This is a public episode. Today's Headlines: Trump's budget bill advanced in the Senate with a narrow 51-49 vote, cutting $1 trillion from Medicaid and handing massive tax breaks to the wealthy while adding $3 trillion to the national debt. Two Republicans voted no, and the final vote was delayed as Democrats forced a reading of the 940-page bill. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ruled that parents can pull kids from public school over LGBTQ content and narrowed lower courts' power to block Trump's executive orders. A Honduran mother is suing ICE after she and her two kids—one of whom has leukemia—were detained during an asylum court date. DHS also announced the end of Temporary Protected Status for over 300,000 Haitians, forcing them to leave by September. Iran's top cleric issued a fatwa calling for the deaths of Trump and Netanyahu. At a Senate hearing, the U.S. military admitted it never used bunker-busting bombs in Iran strikes, contradicting Trump's “total obliteration” claims. Trump abruptly ended trade talks with Canada over its digital services tax, prompting Canadian retaliation. Consumer spending and income both dropped in May, sparking recession concerns. Miami postponed its November election by a year, extending current officials' terms—likely illegally. The University of Virginia's president resigned under Trump administration pressure over DEI efforts. And in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, an active shooter killed two firefighters in an ambush; the story is still developing. Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: WaPo: GOP Sen. Send us a textChristina Korpi, fresh out of college with degrees in Spanish and psychology, arrived in Honduras with practical preparations but couldn't anticipate how profoundly this Central American nation would challenge her American perspective. The cultural adjustments began immediately. Despite Spanish fluency from previous stays in Spain and Mexico, Honduras presented its own linguistic nuances. More surprising were social expectations—Christina packed practical clothes for the tropical climate but discovered Hondurans prioritized style and formal dress despite the heat. Even medical norms differed dramatically, exemplified by her startling experience with a dentist who diagnosed eight non-existent cavities. What emerges most powerfully through Christina's story is the stark contrast between American individualism and Honduran community-orientation. Where Americans schedule playdates, Hondurans gather spontaneously in communal spaces. Where Americans isolate in climate-controlled homes, Hondurans live predominantly outdoors. Where Americans buy fully-constructed homes through mortgages, Hondurans traditionally purchased land first, then built room-by-room as finances allowed—though Christina notes with concern how American-style credit systems have increasingly penetrated Honduras in recent years. We also discuss the ethical dimensions of American expatriation. With average Hondurans earning $600-700 monthly while American retirees live on several thousand, economic disparities become starkly visible in places like Roatan, where luxury developments for foreigners neighbor impoverished communities. Christina emphasizes awareness and engagement with local economic realities when considering relocation. For those contemplating international moves, Christina's advice centers on openness rather than expectation. Success abroad requires genuine engagement with cultural differences—not attempting to recreate American standards. Three years in Honduras taught her that what appears as American convenience often masks disconnection, while what might seem like Honduran simplicity fosters deeper community bonds and authentic joy.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock
The vast majority of Hondurans would have never dared to set foot in Nueva Suyapa, a mountainside barrio that was under the thumb of a gang whose bravado and cruelty were the stuff of legend. But that is precisely where Kurt Ver Beek, an American sociologist, and Carlos Hernández, a Honduran schoolteacher, chose to raise their families. Kurt and Carlos were best friends who had committed their lives to helping the poor, and when they accepted that nobody else—not the police, not the prosecutors, not the NGOs—was ever going to protect their neighbors from the incessant violence they suffered, they decided to take matters into their own hands. In magnetic prose, journalist Ross Halperin chronicles how these two do-gooders became quasi-vigilantes and charged into a series of life-and-death battles, not just with this one gang, but also with forces far more dangerous, including a notorious tycoon who commanded about a thousand armed men and a police force whose wickedness defied credulity. Kurt and Carlos would eventually get catapulted from obscurity to being famous power players who had access to the backrooms where legislators, ambassadors, and presidents pulled strings. Their efforts made some of the most violent neighborhoods on earth safer and arguably improved a profoundly corrupt government. But they were forced to compromise their principles in order to make all that happen, and furthermore, they acquired a large number of outraged critics and precipitated some heartbreaking collateral damage.A remarkable and dangerous feat of reportage, Bear Witness shows what happens when altruism, faith, and an obsession with justice are pushed to the extreme.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. True Crime Tuesday Presents: Bear Witness: The Pursuit Of Justice In A Violent Land with Journalist/ Author, Ross Halperin! As young men, Kurt Ver Beek, an American sociologist, and Carlos Hernández, a Honduran schoolteacher, devoted their lives to helping the poor. But it wasn't until they moved to Nueva Suyapa— an extraordinarily dangerous neighborhood in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa—that they came to a radical conclusion: The charity world was combating poverty incorrectly. In gripping prose, journalist Ross Halperin chronicles how these two best friends became quasi vigilantes and charged into a series of life-and-death battles through their grassroots organization, The Association for a More Just Society (ASJ): first with the gang that terrorized their community, then with a notorious tycoon who commanded about a thousand-armed men, and finally with a police force whose corruption and brutality defied credulity. Their efforts made some of the most violent neighborhoods on earth safer and arguably improved the functioning of a national government, but in the process of pulling that off, they compromised their principles, precipitated collateral damage, and acquired their share of outraged critics. On today's program, we talk with Ross about how a program like ASJ could work in the inner cities here in America, how it was offered to Chicago almost two decades ago, the positives of community involvement and how much quicker things could get done, and the drawbacks that the American justice system could provide considering the success that ASJ had was in a third world country.... Send us a textChild welfare is undergoing a profound transformation worldwide as organizations shift away from institutional orphanages toward family-based care models. But what does this transition actually look like on the ground? How can we redirect well-intentioned support toward solutions that truly serve children's needs? This eye-opening conversation brings together true pioneers in the global care reform movement. Stephen Ucembe draws from his lived experience growing up in a Kenyan orphanage to advocate for family care through Hope and Homes for Children and Transform Alliance Africa. Phil Aspegren shares his remarkable journey from orphanage founder to family care champion as Executive Director of Casa Viva, supporting transitions across Latin America. Together with host David Titus Musa of Sierra Leone, they unpack myths about orphanages that perpetuate family separation. The statistics are sobering: for every three months in an institution, a child loses approximately one month of development. Yet there's tremendous hope in the successful transitions happening worldwide. We hear about a Honduran children's home that reunified all 40 children with families, then redirected their resources to support 125 vulnerable families in the community, preventing separations before they happen.Whether you're a donor, volunteer, or simply care about vulnerable children, this conversation presents a compelling vision for reform. They reflect back on their vocation stories and experience of Jesuit formation and wrestle with some of the biggest questions surrounding priestly ordination. On this episode, Eric talks with David Inczauskis and they consider what it means to be in religious life and a member of a particular religious community. David shares stories from his Jesuit formation and his experiences working at the frontier of justice. David was born and raised in Illinois. As you'll hear, he encountered the Jesuits while studying liberation theology at Oxford University. He's the author of two books: one on Honduran cinema and another on Honduran theater. Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores (1971-2016) was a Honduran environmental activist who spent decades leading various land and water struggles in western Honduras. In 1993 she helped found and coordinate the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras, known by its Spanish acronym COPINH. In the late 2000s, Berta organized a lasting resistance to the construction of the Agua Zarca Dam on the Gualcarque River, whose construction violated the rights of indigenous peoples, and would have effectively cut them off from important resources. She was awarded the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize (the highest honor in the field) for her success in stopping the dam’s construction through grassroots movements. SEASON 3 EPISODE 121: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The District Attorney for New Orleans Jason Williams must indict and issue arrest warrants for Tom Homan, Kristi Noem (Now With 8 Action Adventure Dress-Up Outfits) and the other members of the ICE Gestapo who disappeared a two-year old New Orleans born girl and sent her to Honduras - possibly making up a story that her Honduran-born mother wanted to take her with her - AND also abducted and renditioned a four-year old US Citizen toddler with Stage 4 Medication and sent her and her mother to Honduras, too. The charges should be led by Child Trafficking, kidnapping, violation of 5th and 14th Amendment rights, and be predicated on the fact that ICE has degenerated into a violent gang threatening the safety of Americans. Throw the RICO act at the Brownshirts. The event was so egregious, so redolent of Moral Cannibalism, that the Trump Appointee judge who brought the case to public attention and tried to stop it referred in his writings to their plane being above "The Gulf of America." But he also voiced his "strong suspicion that the government just deported a U.S. citizen with no meaningful process." Indictments of Noem and the others may be fruitless. But it will at least symbolize that democracy will at least fight back against what Trump is doing: which is verging on Ethnic Cleansing. MEANWHILE IN WISCONSIN the ICE stormtroopers who arrested a judge in her courtroom for not collaborating with a raid should themselves be arrested. And unlike Trump, authorities there will not have to fabricate or pervert laws to do so. PLUS I'll analyze Trump's sudden pathetic pleadings to Putin, his bat guano crazy interview with Time, and most imperatively, his writing that he suspects Putin is "just tapping me along." There is no indication anywhere that this phrase "tapping me along" has ever been used by anybody else, ever. There is every indication Trump's mind may have now degenerated further into the stage where he is making up his own words and phrases. B-Block (36:00) Dedicated to Karoline Leavitt whose first and last names both contain the letters for the word "lie." Trump himself gets a bronze for boasting about spending $58,000 of his own money on behalf of the country while he syphons off millions daily. The runner-up is Ed Martin and his embrace, then disengagement, from the world's stupidest looking Hitler cosplayer. But the winner again is Bill Maher, who perpetuates his career-ending decision to go to the White House for dinner with Trump. He claims Larry David's soon-to-be-Pulitzer-Prize winning satire of the event has insulted "six million dead Jews" because of the comparison between Trump and Hitler: "I think the minute you play the ‘Hitler’ card, you’ve lost the argument." Ooops. It's a shame Bill's memory is so damaged. Guess who played the Hitler card, made the comparison to Trump, and thus presumably lost the argument? Twice? On his own show? IN 2015? C-Block (46:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Someone mentioned the great Cornell astronomer and planetary scientist and 26-time Tonight Show guest Carl Sagan and I was flashed back. Sure enough, it was 47 years ago last week that he won a Pulitzer Prize. Our Cornell radio station called him for an interview and he said yes, on one condition: "Is your sportscaster Keith there? I want him to do it. He gets it." This would be the first time I ever interviewed anybody famous, and he requested me, even though we'd never met. I'm as stunned now as I was then, and I'll explain why it happened. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
