There is no explicit provision within the Federal Constitution which addresses the issue of whom the King should appoint as prime minister, should there be a hung Parliament. What convention then governs a hung Parliament situation that Malaysia is currently facing? On a state level, we've seen a unity government being formed in Perak, with Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional coming together to form the new state government. Will we see a unity government at the Federal level, and what role does the Yang di-Pertuan Agong play in determining these sorts of solutions to the many post GE15 political issues? We discuss this and more with Kee Hui Yee, a lawyer with Kanesalingam and Co.Image Credit: Shutterstock
With Istana Negara having extended the deadline for the main coalitions to present their respective numbers and candidates for Prime Minister by 22 November, we explore what are the obligations of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, as spelled out in the Federal Constitution, when faced with a hung Parliament. Constitutional lawyer New Sin Yew joins us to explain, and also clarifies what the Federal Constitution says about the role of the monarchy in appointing a Prime Minister. All eyes will be on whether Prime Minister Dato' Sri Ismail Sabri opts to hold a confidence vote when Parliament reconvenes next week, as recommended by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. What would be the potential implications for Ismail Sabri's government if they forego the vote? We discuss this with political analyst Dr. Azmi Hassan. Image credit: Adam Yusof / Shutterstock.com

The deadline is over. At 4PM sharp on 18th of August, all 220 MPs submitted their statutory decorations to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Who will be the next Prime Minister, the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia? After months and weeks of political turmoil in Malaysia, in the face of rising Covid-19 cases in the country, Malaysia finds itself deep in the triple crisis in health, economy and politics. It does seem like there is no end to this, but by this weekend, we may have a new prime minister, until the next general election which may be held sometime next year, or maybe in the next 21 months until the tenure expires in 2023. With me in this episode, Dr. James Chin, political analyst at the Asia Institute, University of Tasmania in Australia. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/norman-goh/message

Spearheaded by the NGO Malaysian Care, the YouTurn project aims to give chances and equal opportunities to prisoners and ex-prisoners, a group that's often marginalised. The project hopes to make an impact and inspire people from all levels of society to change their views, perspectives and actions towards this group. We find out more about this group's mission and goals from Sam Lim, the Manager of the Community Development Department at Malaysian Care, and also Samuel* and Ashraf*, two former inmates who are now volunteers with the YouTurn Project. We also hear the stories of Samuel, who served a prison sentence for 28 years before he was released after obtaining a pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Since his release, he has been helping the homeless, drug addicts and ex-prisoners. Then we learn about Ashraf, who served three years in juvenile prison and took his STPM while he was there, without a teacher. These days, when not working on his day-job, he is actively involved in prison-related programmes to bring awareness and inspire change whenever he can. *names have been changed to protect their privacy Image source: Shutterstock

Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim finally had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday morning, 3 weeks after he first announced that he had the support of a “convincing majority” of MPs. However his bid to become the Prime Minister of Malaysia is far from certain as after the press conference, it was revealed that the Agong would be meeting with the respective political parties to ascertain their support. Meanwhile Umno issued a press statement stating it is considering withdrawing its support for Perikatan Nasional. To help us unpack all this, we spoke to Dr. Bridget Welsh, Honorary Research Associate, University of Nottingham Asia Institute. Image Credit: Lens Hitam / Shutterstock.com
