History tells us the Wars of the Roses was a chivalric struggle between two great houses that ended with Henry Tudor's victory at Bosworth and the dawn of the Tudor age. That's the cover story.What actually happened across 30 years — between 1455 and 1487 — was something much darker. Two cousin lineages of the same royal family, Lancaster and York, fought a sequence of battles that didn't just transfer the crown. They systematically destroyed the English aristocracy. In 1450, England had roughly 200 noble houses with the wealth and military power to shape the kingdom. By 1490, half of them were extinct.At Towton on Palm Sunday, 1461, an estimated 28,000 men died in a single afternoon in a blizzard — the bloodiest day in English military history before or since. Henry Tudor didn't found the Tudor dynasty by defeating Richard III at Bosworth. He inherited a country where the class that could have stopped him had already killed itself.This is the pattern when an aristocracy turns its weapons on itself. It doesn't get replaced by reform or restoration. He's described by one chronicler as being nothing more than ‘a stuffed wool sack lifted by its ears'.  But Henry makes one pliable puppet for Warwick, who makes himself the king's lieutenant — basically England's decision maker in chief. Lining up behind Warwick are a cast of characters who are more than happy to see England wobble, not least the French King Louis XI.  But beneath Henry VI's return is a tremor that won't settle. It's a gorgeous, calculated provocation.  In the summer of 1469, in Calais, the Earl of Warwick, marries his daughter Isabel to George, Duke of Clarence, brother and heir to King Edward IV.  It's another shot across the bow to Edward, who doesn't seem to understand that the kingmaker wants him out. Within weeks, Warwick's rebels crush a royal army at Edgcote and the Kingmaker imprisons the king himself in the Tower of London.  England collapses into anarchy.  Warwick, humbled, is forced to release Edward. Astonishingly, he is pardoned. More astonishingly, he rebels again. In the 1980s, Pamela identified the potential in a defeated Bill Clinton, mentoring him on public presentation and helping him believe in his political future. She used her Georgetown home to raise massive funds, becoming a kingmaker who helped shape the modern Democratic electoral machine. Beyond domestic politics, Pamela played an extraordinary role in Cold War diplomacy. In 1983, she and an ailing Averell traveled to Moscow to open back-channels with Soviet leader Yuri Andropov. Later, Raisa Gorbachev specifically requested to visit Pamela's home, bypassing Nancy Reagan to acknowledge Pamela's role in fostering nuclear arms treaties. During the 1992 election, Pamela drew on Winston Churchill's 1945 defeat to convince Clinton that a popular war-time president like George H.W. Bush could be beaten on economic issues.
