PRESS REVIEW – Friday, April 4: We bring you reactions from South Korea after the constitutional court upholds parliament's impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. What comes next for the disgraced leader? Also, we look at reactions from Hungary after Prime Minister Viktor Orban withdraws his country from the ICC. Plus: a US tourist is arrested after leaving a can of Diet Coke for an isolated tribe in the Andaman Islands and King Charles plays a carrot instrument in his first public outing since being hospitalised. We bring you early reactions from the South Korean press after President Yoon Suk Yeol was officially removed from office. All eight constitutional judges voted to uphold the impeachment ruling against Yoon in a verdict handed down this Friday. The Korea Herald offers us an autopsy of his career. It notes that he was once touted as an anti-corruption investigator, but no one thought he would meet the same fate as ex-president Park Geun-hye, whom he helped put behind bars. The conservative leader was impeached by parliament last December after an ill-fated move to impose martial law, albeit for only six hours. It nonetheless plunged South Korea into a political and financial crisis: soldiers were deployed to government sites, clashes with citizens ensued and the unrest evoked painful memories of military rule. The Korea Times focuses on the jubilation of South Koreans, millions of whom are celebrating the president's ouster. The paper also looks at what's to come. Yoon will leave office with no possibility of appealing. He'll lose special privileges like a presidential pension or a national burial. More importantly, he'll face multiple criminal investigations, including for treason. Probes into scandals could also begin. He will face legal accountability, and possibly prison time if found guilty. Fresh elections will be held in two months. In the editorial pages, a lot of reactions came in before the verdict but are still noteworthy. Hanyoreh, a liberal paper, urged the court to remove Yoon from office. It's the only way to restore the nation's trust and fulfill its role as the last bulwark of the constitution, the paper added. JoongAng Daily, a conservative paper of reference, focused more on its call for calm and unity after the court's ruling. It reminds readers that Korean democracy was built on the sacrifices of the citizens and urged citizens to "end this turmoil" by accepting the court's ruling.Next, we look at reactions after Hungary's announced withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC). Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced the decision amid an official visit by Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu to Hungary, which is the first EU country to leave the ICC. The German-language Hungarian website Budapester Zeitung goes with the headline "Danke Viktor", echoing comments by Netanyahu thanking Orban for his decision. The daily reminds us that Orban invited Netanyahu last November after the ICC issued an arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Orban reiterated his criticism of the court, saying it has not been impartial for years and functions as a political court. The Jewish News Syndicate, a conservative news syndicate of Israeli and Jewish news, hails Orban for "systematically standing up against EU policies selected by the elite in Brussels and West European capitals". It adds that those who stand up against Islamic radicalism and progressive globalist order can thank Netanyahu, Donald Trump and Viktor Orban. For one cartoonist though, Berend Vonk, the red carpet rolled out for Netanyahu in Hungary is merely the blood that the men have shed through their ruthless politics. In other news: the New York Post reports that India has arrested an "idiotic" US tourist for visiting a remote tribe in the Andaman Islands. The 24-year-old influencer travelled for nine hours in a rubber dinghy to reach the North Sentinel islands. He tried to get the tribe's attention by blowing a whistle and left soda and a coconut as an offering, before being arrested. As the Post reports, the man fashions himself as a daredevil traveller, having travelled to Afghanistan and posed with the Taliban. The hunter-gatherer tribe on the Sentinel Islands are extremely isolated and therefore have no immunity from modern diseases. The last person to visit them, a Christian missionary who tried to convert them, was promptly killed. So you could say this tourist got lucky! Finally, Britain's King Charles III has made his return to public duties after a brief period of hospitalisation related to his cancer treatment. The king returned to public service with a heartwarming video of him with the London Vegetable Orchestra. They are the UK's only musical ensemble to play instruments made of local vegetables. Take a look at this video of King Charles playing the most royal of vegetables: the carrot, filmed by the royal family's cameraman!
Since relocating to Jeju Island in 2017, Park Geun-joo has been capturing the essence of Jeju's buildings through his photography. He reimagines these structures with colors and shapes, creating images that resemble paintings. His work explores the boundary between reality and idealism, encouraging viewers to reflect on this interplay. Buildings that we often pass by unnoticed, unaware of their presence, are reborn as works of art through his lens. His photography invites people to closely observe and appreciate the details of everyday life. Park operates a studio in the small village of Jongdal-ri in Jeju City, where he is also working on a series titled “Romantic Melancholy”—a collection of photographs capturing the back appearance of local residents.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with John Carl Baker, director of programs at Ploughshares, to discuss the ongoing political unrest in South Korea. Then, she speaks with Giorgio Cafiero, CEO of Gulf State Analytics & adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University, to discuss the recent developments in Syria after rebel forces entered Aleppo. First, Emma runs through updates on the search for the UnitedHealthcare CEO's killer, SCOTUS' oral arguments on Tennessee's ban on trans care for minors, Memphis Police discrimination, Trump's elite-led cabinet, questions about Tulsi Gabbard's loyalties, Pete Hegseth's myriad embarrassments, Israel's genocide in Gaza, Trump's legal woes, and the future of Democratic leadership, before parsing a little deeper through yesterday's oral arguments for US v. Skrmetti in front of the Supreme Court, and the fear that they might uphold Tennessee's violently transphobic policy. John Carl Baker then joins, diving right into a step-by-step breakdown of how South Korean President Yoon's attempt (and failure) to declare and enforce martial law last Tuesday developed, beginning with his declaration and assembling of soldiers and police around the National Assembly, through the rampant protests to allow legislatures to enter the assembly to vote down Yoon's attempted coup, and to the overwhelming 190-0 (in an assembly of 300) veto of the President's martial law. After briefly touching on the limited vocal support for Yoon from among his conservative allies, Baker steps back to explore the history of South Korea's conservative ties to dictatorship, beginning with Japan's brutal 30-year occupation of Korea through the end of the Second World War – an occupation bolstered by cooperation and support from conservative, capitalist, and right-wing Koreans – and through the sequential regimes of Chon Doo-hwan and Park Chung-hee from the 1960s-80s, with Park Geun-hye (daughter of Chung-hee) even rising to the Presidency just a decade ago only to be impeached over her corrupt practices, also unpacking the continued prevalence of authoritarian strains within the South Korean right over the last century. He and Emma then look at the non-coup-related failures of Yoon's regime that created both his overwhelming unpopularity and the strong opposition he sought to undermine via coup, wrapping up the interview by unpacking the role of the US in backing Yoon's regime, and what the ideal future of US-Korean relations would look like to the Korean electorate. Professor Giorgio Cafiero then joins, first running through updates on the recent sweeping offensives by Syrian rebels, successfully taking both Aleppo and Hama from the Assad regime, before taking a sharp step back as he walks us through the evolution of the 13-year Civil War, beginning with the Arab spring and spurring the intervention of myriad regional and international actors, through the 2015 intensification of conflict at the hand of increased Russian support for Assad and Iranian-backed groups, and to the lull in tensions that started in 2020, only to break this past week. After parsing through the more specific history of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the deep and complex ties between the Syrian and Iranian regimes, Emma and Professor Cafiero tackle the prevalent role of external conflicts in how the impact of these Syrian Rebel conquests will unfold, with Iran's involvement in Hezbollah's conflict with Israel and Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine giving two major parties conflicting interests. Cafiero expands on the precarious state of the Syrian state at this moment, looking both at what that means for a potential (however brief) lull in conflict and for the future of the Syrian government, before wrapping up with the ongoing role of Israeli relations in shaping Middle Eastern politics. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they listen to Eddie from Fort Worth's Stetson Kennedy recommendations, talk with Gary from North Carolina about the divide between Trump voters and down-ballot GOP voters, and admire Jane Fonda's performance on Bill Maher. Meg from Seattle unpacks the harrowing and life-threatening impacts of repressive reproductive care, and Megyn Kelly aids in the attempted resuscitation of Pete Hegseth's potential career, plus, your calls and IM! In this episode of The Korea Pro Podcast, John is joined by Joon Ha, Korea Pro's junior news reporter, to discuss recent developments in South Korean literature, diplomacy and international relations. The duo begin by celebrating Han Kang's Nobel Prize in Literature, making her the second Korean to receive a Nobel Prize. Joon Ha highlights the international acclaim for Han's work and the role of translators in bringing Korean literature to a global audience. They also touch on the controversial blacklisting of cultural figures, including Han, during the Park Geun-hye administration. The conversation then shifts to last week's meeting between South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Laos. John and Joon Ha analyze the leaders' efforts to continue the rapprochement process while navigating domestic political sensitivities, particularly in light of Ishiba's ceremonial offering to the Yasukuni Shrine. The duo then discusses former U.S. President Donald Trump's claims about South Korea's financial contributions for U.S. troop presence. They examine the potential implications for U.S.-ROK relations if Trump were to win the upcoming U.S. presidential election, considering the recent negotiations of the 12th Special Measures Agreement. Looking ahead, John notes the anticipated meeting between Yoon and ruling People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, discussing the potential impact of recent by-election victories on their relationship and party dynamics. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. Episode 184 - BFYTW Gets PoliticalGame 1 - The Cost is Correct Our players will take turns bidding on political memorabilia, trying to get as close to either the actual listed price or the winning bid in a previous auction without going over, whoever's closest wins the listing for their team, and the team who wins the most listings wins the game and earns one episode point.Game 2 - Tinfoil Hat It seems a waste to invite podcasters who are well versed in conspiracies and scandals and NOT play a game about conspiracies and scandals, so welcome to Tinfoil Hat! I'm giving our players three seemingly unconnected things, and here they are: The toilet paper shortage in 2020 Bratz dolls South Korean former President Park Geun-hye's bizarre corruption scandal All our players have to do is spin me a conspiracy theory linking the three, and the player who spins the CRAZIEST conspiracy theory WITHOUT losing me will win the game and earn two episode points for their team.Game 3 - 4 Out of 5 Dentists I'm going to ask five survey questions, such as 'what percentage of Americans believe in ghosts', and one team will guess the exact percentage out of 100. Their opponents will then decide whether they think the correct answer is higher or lower, if they're correct, they win the survey, otherwise the original guessers win it. Then teams will swap roles and we'll move onto the next survey. And of course, this episode's surveys are all about politics. First team to win three surveys wins the game and earns three episode points.Shoutouts to our Patrons; Mexi, Justin, Kristin, Flaose, Todd, Jim, Flaos, Bridget F., David M., Erin S, Donna/Colin Maggs,The GateLeapers, Kacey S., William M.Promos @MuckPodcast @Infectious_PodFounding Members of @OddPodsMediahttps://www.patreon.com/BFYTWShow Music by @KeroseneLetter and @MexigunOur Merch Store https://www.teepublic.com/user/bfytw-podcasthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyJG-PDn6su32Et_eSiC6RQwww.BFYTWpod.comhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100094350980128This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4771234/advertisement
The third episode, "Trouble in the Blue House," dissects the corruption scandal often called "South Korea's Watergate." When former President Park Geun-hye was first elected in 2013, she held widespread conservative support and was internationally celebrated as the country's first female president. No one could have predicted that just 5 years later, she would end up embroiled in a corruption case that would leave her disgraced, impeached, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Although not without its controversy, Park Geun-hye's impeachment shows how anti-corruption movements can pursue accountability and reform while protecting democratic norms.

In this episode, we discussed: how Tiffany's personal journey has informed her approach to creating value for her network. Tiffany's key strategies and mindset hacks for building powerful professional relationships in Washington. how 'The Beat' is helping policy professionals in Washington stay on top of what's happening and find relevant networking opportunities. Resources: The Beat (send news leads to: info@thebeatdc.com) The Raben Group Task Rabbit The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver NEWS ROUNDUP Donald Trump named former New York City Mayor and early Trump supporter Rudy Giuliani as an informal cybersecurity advisor. He'll head the President-elect's cybersecurity working group. Abby Phillip in the Washington Post writes that, since leaving the New York City Mayorship, Giuliani has started his own cybersecurity consulting firm-Giuliani Partners. Now a bunch of people are saying, "What the hell does Guiliani know about cybsecurity?" Well, Motherboard's Jason Koebler and Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai looked into it and found some folks familiar with Giuliani and Partners' work ... It turns out their expertise is more along the lines of telling companies how to legally cover their asses if they're the victim of cyberbreach, as opposed to advising on actual cybersecurity solutions. So it's looking like this job is more of a thank you for to Giuliani for his help during the campaign. It also turns out, as Rob Price at Business Insider found, that Giuliani's company website--giulianisecurity.com--is replete with vulnerabilities. -- You've heard all about Trump's dossier--people calling him PEEOTUS and things like that on Twitter, so we won't go into all the details on that--especially since the dossier is still largely unsubstantiated. But Scott Shane put together a nice summary just in case you don't want to sit there all day trying to figure out what's going on with this. Basically, this all started when the Republicans retained a company called Fusion GPS to look into Trump to figure out how to hurt him politically. Then, when it turned out he was going to be the Republican nominee, the Clinton campaign took over and retained Fusion to continue the investigation. The dossier has been floating around Washington for quite sometime, but the President and President-elect were briefed on it, and that's when it made its way to the public via BuzzFeed and other sites. Mr. Trump says the entire dossier is a total fabrication. But if it's a total fabrication--it's pretty detailed, so someone must have had a lot of time on their hands. In any case, the FBI is investigating the claims ... although no one knows if Trump will authorize that investigation to continue. Some are also wondering why FBI Director James Comey was so interested in Hillary Clinton's email but not this. So this issue isn't going away anytime soon, basically, is the takeaway here. -- Matt Hamilton at the LA Times reports that BackPage--the classified ad website -- shut down its adult section last week after the U.S. Senate released a scathing report accusing the company of hiding targeted search terms related to prostitution and child abuse. BackPage Founders Michael Lacey and and James Larkin were scheduled to testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland and Governmental Affairs' subcommittee on investigations. The committee's report alleges that its review of some 1.1 million documents revealed evidence that the company facilitated sex trafficking and child abuse. Testimony from a BackPage site moderator seems to show the company actively removed search terms so they wouldn't lose ad revenue, but still keep the ads posted without actively promoting crimes. But BackPage says it adheres to the the Communications Decency Act which provides immunity to websites that host content by third parties. The company also claimed the government investigation was an violation of its First Amendment Rights One children's advocate--Lois Lee--founder of Children of the Night--even said the site has actually helped law enforcement identify predators and locate missing children. But Senators Bob Portman--the Republican from Ohio and as Democratic Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill--both of who led the bi-partisan investigation-- say BackPages's decision to shut down the adult section shows how damning the evidence they uncovered was. -- Congress has selected its leadership for its communications and tech-related committees. Senate Commerce Committee Chair John Tune announced that Mississippi Republican Senator Roger Wicker will lead the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet.
People around the world are used to expecting a certain level of corruption from their leaders. Greed and self-interest are a part of the universal human experience. What most people aren't used to, however, is the idea that the leader of their country may be subservient to a shadowy religious figure that has been manipulating their life for over three decades. Join us for this episode of "No One is Competent" as we go over the Park Geun-hye scandal, one of the most intriguing and bizarre events in South Korean politics.

Dr. Bong explained who president-elect Yoon Seok-yeol is and why he has built a reputation for fairness and justice in South Korean society, including the investigations into former Jsutice Minister Cho Kuk and two ex-Presidents, Park Geun-hye and Lee Myoung-bak. He then criticizes elements of Yoon's victory which focused on a divisive approach to gender. He offered insight as to Ahn Chul-soo's possible future and why his unification with Yoon nearly backfired. Today, I'm ready to share the column. Usually, I share the news, but today is exceptional. There is no major difference between Column and Blog. I may say the following issue should be taken over to the next generation. Comfort Woman is the most hesitant and complicated topic. The Japanese government founded the foundation in Korea to support former victims of wartime sexual slavery. Last November, South Korea announced the desolvation from that foundation. South Korea said the foundation didn't sufficiently reflect the opinions of the women. In announcing the decision, Seoul's ministry of gender equality and family, which managed the foundation, said: "We will try our best in setting up policies to recover the honor and dignity of the victims. I think it's fair enough. As you know, people are protesting for the victims. South Korean people are offended when the Japanese Government offers apologies and money. Japanese has kept defending the subject from the critical opinions that point out the subtle survey of government's institution. TBS Radio's program "Session 22" interviewed Yoshiaki Harada the former leader of the international information inquisition. The LDP organized the group which is very defended of their opinion. The interview shows the LDP's policy very well. And I found this political party stands by side of revisionism. The issue is: Military forced the comfort women. Under the name of "Japan–Korea Treaty of 1910" Japanese government started colonizing Korea. Built a parliament and summoned politicians. Banned the anti-government demonstrations and send the military police scaring people. Historian says 200,000 women were forced or tricked into working in military brothels between 1932 and 1945. 1993, Kono-statement was published by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yōhei Kōno. "The then Japanese military was, directly or indirectly, involved in the establishment and management of the comfort stations" "The recruitment of the comfort women was conducted mainly by private recruiters who acted in response to the request of the military." "In many cases, they were recruited against their own will, through coaxing, coercion, etc." "At times, administrative/military personnel directly took part in the recruitments." "They lived in misery at comfort stations under a coercive atmosphere." At the moment, only 27 of the victims were alive, out of 240 who were registered with the South Korean government. Whole world's eyes focused on the victims. New victims were found, more testimonies were revealed. 2015, an agreement was made between Japan's prime minister Abe and previous Koren's president Park Geun-hye. The victim's family and many citizens complained about that agreement. More than 80 statues of comfort women were built all over the world so far. Japan contributed about US9m to establish the foundation. About US$3.9m has been paid to 34 surviving victims and 58 families of deceased victims according to South Korea's Yonhap news. But the Japanese Government didn't show any counter-evidence: Military forced the comfort women. And the victims are yet to be confirmed as a comfort woman. Today in Japan, people are on the Golden Week which provides 10days off this year. And today is the last day as Heisei era. Tomorrow, people spend the day in the new era. As the time past, people forget the fact that we invaded the country and human rights. The memory you obtained in those days were stood on the tragic history. That what I want you to know. Since 2009, the Singapore-based non-profit has facilitated training workshops for everyday North Koreans in Economics, Entrepreneurship and Urban Planning in metropolitan Pyongyang and elsewhere around the country. In this conversation, Chosun Exchange Associate Director of Research Dr. Andray Abrahamian discusses how the introduction of some aspects of a free market economy under the Kim Jong-eun regime is changing the way North Koreans look at capitalism. We'll also talk about the prospects for further change in North Korean society and discuss how initiatives like Chosun Exchange could impact how the United States, South Korea and other countries approach North Korea policy. Also: how can political leadership in the United States and the Koreas move past saber-rattling and militaristic rhetoric? How will South Korean policy towards the North change in the post-Park Geun-hye era? And what's it like to fly Air Koryo? Music on this episode is 'Great Comrade Kim Jong-eun, We Know Nobody But You' from KCTV State Television: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLbWjwIwKrI This episode was produced in collaboration with the University of Michigan's Nam Center for Korean Studies.
