Article V of the U.S. Constitution provides two avenues for amending the Constitution. One of those avenues – an Article V Convention – has never before been used, in part because it could put the entire Constitution on the chopping block. Factions of the far Right, however, are now actively working to orchestrate such a convention, with the goal of radically rewriting the U.S. Constitution to achieve partisan outcomes. If the outcomes of a mock convention held by factions of the Right in 2016 are any indication, an Article V Convention could see amendments aimed at disassembling modern government and the century-old New Deal consensus, returning the country to the troubling, splintered times when the federal government could do little to provide for national welfare or defense. This could include amendments to repeal the federal income tax, to require onerous supermajorities akin to the filibuster to raise other taxes, and to enable state legislatures to nullify federal laws and regulations. Given current political dynamics, it's easy to also imagine amendments to ban abortion and enshrine extreme interpretations of the 2nd Amendment. ACS is actively educating the public about the dangers of this radical effort and the potential for it to send this country into a constitutional crisis even more dire than January 6th.

Game Trayz bring us this GORGEOUS looking game that promises a sandbox experience with 12 characters, each with their own and unique story to tell. Find the campaign here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gametrayz/forsaken-5 From the boardgamegeek page: Far from the galactic core, Thyrria and its moons have been strip-mined and left for dead. Abandoned workers huddle together in makeshift settlements, struggling to survive in a world of scarce resources and lawlessness. Native nomads and bizarre creatures resurface to take back the wasteland. Factions and adventurers rise and fall, but only the greatest will be remembered in legend. Forsaken is an immersive sandbox adventure game where you take the role of a character looking to leave their mark in the harshest of worlds. Every character has a personalized branching story, with every path uniquely-tailored to the choices you make along the way. How will you change the face of Thyrria, and how will Thyrria change you? Your goal is to secure your place as a legend in any way you can, but there are many ways to become a legend. Navigating through personal and public story objectives, doing odd jobs, hunting down bounties, fulfilling prophecies, and even gambling at the Cantina can all advance your legend tracker. Finding the right opportunities to upgrade your gear, weapons, and skills can help you along the way. Once a player reaches the end of the track, the player with the greatest legend wins. At the end of your turn, you may trigger an event or encounter, which allows you an opportunity to permanently change the game and the emergent story based on the decisions you make. These changes can determine your character's motives and goals personally, or guide the shared stories to impact the world itself. The more you change about the world, the bigger the mark you make and the greater your legend will be. The American populace received a crystal-clear message delivered by Darth Brandon against a blood red Constitution Hall in a speech that sent the Socialist Sith Lords howling for a civil war. The Department of Justice is salivating at another chance to come after Americans after branding concerned parents as Domestic Terrorists, all for simply living up to their civic duty and bringing their local government to heel. Indefinite confinement without trial for innocent Americans of January 6th continues while the real terrorists in Antifa and BLM go free. On this episode of the On the Balcony podcast, Michael is joined by Julia Fabris McBride today to discuss the eighth chapter of Ron Heifetz's book, Leadership Without Easy Answers.  Today the pair reckon with the idea of leadership as it functions without authority.  McBride is an actor, author, and President and CEO of the Kansas Leadership Center (KLC). In her work with KLC, McBride strives daily to foster civic leadership and create stronger and healthier Kansan communities.  In doing so, she must engage with different factions, their values, and opinions.  It can be hard fulfilling an authority role, especially when those you lead have differing versions of success.   But as McBride says, progress happens when we embrace diverse opinions, understand one another, and come to decisions for the common good.  It's also challenging when holding an authority role that confines you to an organization's code of conduct and job description.  Many people, though, go beyond those informal expectations and duties and do what they aren't authorized to do.  Take some of history's greatest changemakers for example:  Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony, and Martin Luther King acted without authority, asking the provocative questions, and influencing society to think differently.  They did, but only because these trail blazers had the courage to make waves in domains where they weren't always welcome. Thanks to their ability to practice leadership without authority, we all benefit greatly from the  progress they inspired. The Finer Details of This Episode:  The difference between self and role  Working across factions  The “risk” in practicing leadership without authority Working across factions in rural communities in Kansa  The value of diverse perspectives  Having the courage to fail Leadership case examples around abortion and LGBTQ rights Quotes:  “What I loved about this framework, from the very beginning, was the idea that there's a distinction between role and self.” ‘The Kansas Leadership Center's mission is to foster civic leadership for healthier, stronger, more prosperous Kansas communities. And our vision is a civic culture in Kansas and beyond that is healthy and prosperous.” “In fact, many people daily go beyond both their job description and the informal expectations they carry within their organization, and do what they are not authorized to do.” “He's just talked about how leadership without authority has been the domain of women for a long time. And he's starting to get into examples of people like Rachel Carson and Gandhi and Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King, who exercised leadership beyond the scope of their authority.” “Even if you're the board chair of a nonprofit, you're having to deal with governance issues and nominating the next slate of officers. But if you're, you know, if you really don't have any authority, you can ask the dumb question or the provocative question.” “Progress [happens] when we understand each other…Progress is a civic culture that's more able to make decisions for the common good.” “I encourage people to speak their mind, to ask hard questions, to stretch beyond their comfort zones. We need people who have the courage to say this is what I care about.” Links: On the Balcony on Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-the-balcony/id1627073051 ( https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast) Leadership Without Easy Answers on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-Without-Answers-Ronald-Heifetz/dp/0674518586 ( https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-Without-Answers) Julia Fabris McBride with KLC: https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/team/julia-fabris-mcbride/ (https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/team)  The Kansas Leadership Center: https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/team/julia-fabris-mcbride/ (https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/) Julia Fabris McBride on Twitter:...

The 2020 presidential election has cast a long shadow over American politics. Much of the decorum, propriety, and cordiality of the political world was replaced by even more polarization, and violent aggression as demonstrated by the insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 in support of President Donald Trump. Partisan polarization continues to plague daily life, and unfortunately, as it increases, so does inter-party polarization. The Democratic Party, divided between more establishment candidates and those on the more progressive wing of the party, saw an increasing gap between these ideologies as represented by the 2020 candidates for the presidential nomination. The Republican Party has a somewhat similar dynamic, divided between moderates and conservatives within the party, but also, in 2020, between those willing to criticize President Trump and those who were loyally supporting him. Polarization and Political Party Factions in the 2020 Election (Lexington, 2022) sheds light on the major changes seen during the 2020 campaign and election, while also exploring the longer-term implications of these shifts and changes. This edited volume breaks down key understandings of the American political landscape in order to paint a full picture of the dynamics during the course of the entire 2020 election season. Each chapter examines specific conditions connected to presidential and congressional primaries, polling, activism in online spaces, essential voting rights, ideologies, and more. The focus of the chapters looks at two forms of factionalism: the first and rather obvious form of factionalism is between the Democratic and Republican parties, which leads to our current polarization; the second is the internal and asymmetric dynamic in each party, where tension between different factions push and pull the workings of the parties themselves and the candidates running as members and representatives of these parties. The contributing authors help make sense of a fragile and, at times, frightening era in politics, while also teasing apart the broader implications for national electoral politics. Editors Jennifer C. Lucas, Christopher J. Galdieri, and Tauna S. Sisco (all of whom are members of the faculty at St. Anselm College) have brought together an insightful and illuminating collection of chapters from some of the most respected authors in the field. This is an engaging and accessible book that will appeal to students, scholars, and citizens. Emma R. Handschke assisted in the production of this podcast Lilly J. Goren is a professor of political science at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. The 2020 presidential election has cast a long shadow over American politics. Every company has its own internal factions: engineers vs. designers, East Coast vs. West, IT vs. everybody. The trick is turning factionalism into healthy competition that propels you toward your shared mission. At Motorola, Cisco, and now her start-up Fable, Padma Warrior has tapped into the power of internal divisions. It's not about separating people into warring camps; it's about building bridges from our differences, rather than divisions.Read a transcript of this episode: https://mastersofscale.comSubscribe to the Masters of Scale weekly newsletter: http://eepurl.com/dlirtXSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
