For the ninth episode of 400 Floor we talk to Gabriel Saloman Mindel & Pete Swanson aka Yellow Swans. One of the premier US noise bands of the '00s, they melded the sonic experimentation of noise music with the intensity and DIY ethos of hardcore punk, touring relentlessly and famously always making sure to fit in smaller cities in their route often skipped over by other bands. They play their first show in 15 years on June 16th, headlining the Oblivion Access festival in Austin, TX. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Pete Swanson joins us to melt icebergs and flood alleyways with “Cities in Fog” by Jeff Greinke. Swanson recommended this strange '80s muted atmospheric haze for us to cover and we couldn’t have been happier to swim in this watery abyss. Pete brings his deep knowledge of obscure experimental scenes and sounds as we discuss where this album comes from and where it takes us. Let the dark tides roll in.
Michele Mercure's musical activities began in the 1980s with her experimental theatre scores and 10-second animated bumpers for the burgeoning MTV. Drawn into the community of tape trading, she became pen pals with Conrad Schnitzler, The Nightcrawlers, and a pre fame Yanni. Michele’s self released cassettes have recently been reissued by labels such as RVNG and Pete Swanson’s Freedom to Spend, who made her album Eye Chant their inaugural release. She has now returned with a recharged motivation to share her creations from these fertile early years and move forward with even more to come in 2020.
In ep 118, Shannon Mason interviews Pete Swanson about the language teacher shortage and how recruitment and retention efforts may help address the issue. Shannon and Pete are two of the leading scholars researching the issue, and the show notes link to a bit of additional research so listeners can follow up after hearing the episode. Freedom To Spend is an american label run by Pete Swanson and Jed Bindeman that “examines fully realized yet under recognized sonic statements from other eras when accessibility to technology did not always equate to accessible music”. This episode features: Rimarimba, Michelle Musser, Ursula K. Le Guin & Todd Barton, Pep Llopis, Richard Horowitz, Marc Barreca andMichelle Musser.
It's week six and joining Tim and Samara is one of Melbourne's most eclectic selectors, Anuraag. Is he a man? Is he a band? Is he a computer? All will be revealed in this week's episode of Enthuse the Muse featuring tracks from Will Long, Pete Swanson, Cocteau Twins and many more.
