On this week's episode we recap the 2025 Rom-Com Oh, Hi! Starring Molly Gordon, Logan Lerman and Geraldine Viswanathan. This movie is a cautionary tale of why, as a man, you need to think before you act and keep yourself safe. Taking a girl on a romantic weekend away and then telling her that you're not really looking for a relationship is, statistically, the #1 cause of men being held hostage by their 'not girlfriend' at a lake house. Take notes bros, stay safe out there.

Roll out the tracks and load the main gun—this week, we are reviewing David Ayer's intense 2014 war drama, Fury. We're breaking down Brad Pitt's chilling performance as “Wardaddy,” Logan Lerman's descent from pacifist typist to hardened killer, and the film's unapologetic look at the psychological toll of late-stage combat. Chris Paul and Burning Bright tackle David Ayer's 2014 World War II film Fury, starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, and Michael Pena. Burning Bright picked it as a Memorial Day rewatch and argues it is one of the most underrated war films of the modern era, deserving way more credit than Saving Private Ryan style lionization tends to allow. The guys dig into the five very different spiritual approaches of the tank crew, the dehumanization of war daddy, bible, gordo, kunas, and the painfully innocent Norman, and why the infamous early execution scene is not the glorification it gets accused of being. They unpack the central biblical passage from First John chapter two, do not love the world or anything in the world, as the real moral spine of the film and the heart of all discernment. From there they go big picture, hitting Jevons paradox and how better military tech just means more efficient mass sacrifice, why World War II had the cleanest cartoon story of any modern war, the controlled opposition Nazi op being run on MAGA right now, narrative shielding through Donald Trump's hyper Zionist posture, and the fiery tank as a birth canal delivering Norman into a second chance.
This week we welcome to the main feed, for the first time ever, resident Film Bro, one of our earliest patrons, and #MySistersBoyfriend, DYLAN DELUCA! In this episode, we dissect the surprising pairing of Kirsten Dunst with Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid's Secret. We break down what their dynamic could bring to the thriller vibe, tease potential plot twists, and look at what this means for the project's momentum and release plans. We then explore Netflix's take on 13 Going on 30 with Logan Lerman and Emily Bader. We discuss how updates could land in today's streaming era, casting chemistry, and how the update might honor or depart from the original's charm. In other news, Jamie Lee Curtis is steering a Murder, She Wrote movie with a holiday 2027 release window. In this segment, we outline what to expect from the tone and mystery DNA, potential cast moves, and how a big-screen adaptation could pay homage to the beloved series while carving its own path. The writers for Aunt Gladys Weapons' prequel are also revealed, and we break down what this backstory could reveal about the world and its characters. We discuss possible eras, tonal directions, and the implications for the character moving forward. Rumors and confirmations also swirl as Ryan Gosling briefly joins—and then exits—a secret Universal Pictures collaboration from The Daniels. We unpack what this tells us about the project's scope, casting realities, and how such changes affect production timelines. What's your favorite scary movie? Scream 8 is officially in the early stages, with the Zuckerman Sisters scripting the next chapter. We speculate on where the franchise could go, how meta-horror evolves with new voices, and which returning elements fans might expect to see. In more surprising news, A Troop Beverly Hills sequel is moving forward with Cameron Diaz leading the pack and Clea DuVall writing and directing. We talk about the tonal shift from the original, potential updated themes, and how Diaz's return could shape a fresh, funny adventure. Action fans rejoice! Extraction 3 is officially happening, with Chris Hemsworth back in action. In this episode, we map out what a third installation could look like, the stakes for the character, and how the franchise might elevate its signature action pacing. Lastly, it's a movie trailer round up with looks at The End of Oak Street, Supergirl, A24's Backrooms, Masters of the Universe, and A24's The Invite. It's time for another look at a movie about and featuring video games but not actually based on a video game. This time it's 2009's Gamer starring Gerard Butler, Logan Lerman, Michael C Hall and directed by Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Set in the far distant future of 2034 in a world where the game Slayers (an online third person shooter) uses real life death-row prisoners in a real life murder arena controlled by players safely at home. In many ways it's ahead of it's time and in many other ways it has aged horrible. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes roll into WWII with "Fury" (2014), David Ayer's gritty tank drama starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal.Mike Butler came into this rewatch with a new perspective, after not liking the film too much on his first viewing. He found a lot more to appreciate this time around, especially in a tense, uncomfortable dinner scene that he gushes about in the episode. Both he and Mike Field agree that the performances are excellent across the board, giving weight to the film's depiction of life and death inside a WWII Sherman tank. That said, the Mikes still have issues with some of the logic gaps in the climactic battle, and they can't ignore the stories of how the set was run behind the scenes. Still, "Fury" remains a gripping war film that offers intensity, strong character work, and a perspective on WWII worth revisiting. What's your favorite WWII film or gritty war film from another time period? Let us know!
In this episode, I'll be applying diagnostic criteria to two fictional characters: Sherlock Holmes (played by various actors) and Charlie (from the film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, played by Logan Lerman). As I journey through these characters' stories, you may see some related themes in your own life. At first, the episode will be a little…technical (with loads of medical jargon). But, stick with me. You might learn something about yourself. And, it may surprise you to learn about my view of diagnostic criteria…SPOILER ALERT for anyone who has not seen these characters portrayed in media (as I will be discussing specific moments). Also, my utilization of these films and characters is not an endorsement of their content nor their themes. This week, Andrew shows up for a minute before his night-night time, and then leaves Kevin and Lauren to fend for themselves to discuss Alien: Earth, Caught Stealing, Eenie Meanie, Oh, Hi!, Night Always Comes, The Gilded Age, and Peacemaker. Since Andrew is on borrowed time this week, he and Kevin quickly break down the latest episode of Alien: Earth. I have a feeling this will be a theme over the next few weeks... As with the previous episodes, this one does not disappoint. We are digging into these new characters and discovering some wild new species and skills that are making this show a must watch so far. After tucking Andrew in and singing him a lullaby, the show moves on with Lauren discussing her sneak peak of Caught Stealing. This one stars Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, and a handful of other big names. It's a solid action dramedy that seems to be exactly what the previews led us to believe - this is Darren Aronofsky channeling Guy Ritchie and it sounds like it worked pretty well. Next up, Kevin talks about the new Samara Weaving film, Eenie Meanie. This film is somehow both good and bad, corny and dramatic, and fun and sad. Trailers will definitely give shades of Gone in 60 Seconds or Baby Driver, and that's not entirely wrong, but at some point, the film siwtches up on you and tries to give to feels, which is arguably when it becomes the better film. Weaving is really solid, so if there's no other reason to watch, check her performance out. Heading out to the theater, Lauren discusses the film Oh, Hi! starring Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman. Imagine a genderswapped Gerlad's Game, but also a comedy.. If it sounds insane, well, it is a little. But with that being said, it is a lot of fun, if not chaotic. The crux of the story is that, when a woman finds out her latest love is a player, she puts him in a position where he has no choice but to face his decisions. Yeah, it's nuts, but it's fun! In an effort to kill that light mood, Kevin talks about the emotional suckage that is, Night Always Comes. It stars rising actress Vanessa Kirby as a down on her luck woman who needs to get $25,000 in a single night to save her family. In most films, this would turn into a fun caper, but here we spiral with this woman, diving deeper and deeper into her painful past. While Kirby is fantastic in the part, the film lacks any semblance of joy and ends with an odd decision, sure to leave you wishing you'd done almost anyting else with your time. As we power towards the end of the episode, Lauren brings joy back to our lives. She start watching, and quickly finished, The Gilded Age on HBO. It's a period piece, a la Downton Abbey, but in the US and a few decades earlier. Loosely based on the Venderbilt family, it's a story of new vs old money and all of the complications that come with high society. With standout performances from Carrie Coon, Christine Baransky, and Taisa Farmiga, this one is not to be missed. Kevin brings the show to a close with a quick review of the season 2 premiere of Peacemaker. If you watched season 1, this is more of the same, but in the best of ways. Gunn manages to retcon the DCEU in a fun way without disrespecting that universe. This season begins Peacemaker's multiversal journey into his own existential crisis. While absolutely hilarious, and expectedly raunchy, it has some wondeful heartfelt moments that are setting up some major decisions for Peacemaker to deal with throughout the season. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Oh, Hi! is a new film that's supposed to be a rom-com? A thriller? A dark comedy? Something else? Ashley, Matt and Rachel aren't exactly sure what it's trying to be, but we definitely have opinions about it.

November is Sword and Sandals month! All month, we'll focus on mythical and mythic-ish movies, starting with 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief! Ben, Bree, Sam, and Vaz break down the watered-down (ha!) first attempt at adapting Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series. Directed by Chris Columbus, starring Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, and Alexandra Daddario, and featuring Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Joe Pantoliano, and Uma Thurman.
David Ayers (Suicide Squad, The Beekeeper) directs this brutal war drama which takes place during the last days of World War II along the German front. We follow a crew riding within tank titled the titular "Fury" which is lead by Brad Pitt's grizzled veteran nick-named "Wardaddy." Pitt leads a stellar cast including Michael Pena, Shia LeBouf, Jon Bernthal and Logan Lerman, the latter of which plays Norman who becomes the audience avatar as he has just joined this crew and has never experienced combat before. What results is a grisly adventure featuring several intense combat sequences ALL depicted from the vantage point of this Sherman tank. There is one thing that connects the disparate generations of Americans: books. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will look at two novels that don't just capture the spirit of growing up but punctuate chapters in an American student's life: “Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. These books are frequently assigned in English classrooms across the county, and if they're not, they're passed from friend to friend. They are rites of passage in their own right. These books don't share plot, characters, or scenery, but they both prove how serious childhood is, how painful growing up can be, and just how "adult" a topic a young person can handle.

PARTY PLEASER: Shirleon joins Melvin in summarizing Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, the forgotten sequel to Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Mythical monsters abound in this YA-flick, and the two have a fun time chattin' what works and what doesn't in this swan-song of the Percy Jackson theatrical film series. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 22-minutes playing a Disney Trivia Game that has some pretty dang difficult questions. Can you guess more correctly than Shirleon? (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The first 10-minutes of the film are expediently-well paced, which for Melvin was a good sign. The "Fantasy Racism" from Annabeth to the cyclops Tyson gets to be a bit too much. It's very one-note.When the Three Fates Taxi scene took place, despite evoking Harry Potter 3, Melvin thought to himself, "Oh, I think I'm going to like this movie.".Percy's character arc is simple, and not all that explicit, but it's very much about the confusion between a found-family and a born-family, as well as concepts of faith.Tyson's cyclops CGI is off-putting, which is made worse when we see a cyclops in a flashback and it looks awesome.Jake Abel plays Luke as this character who likes being the irritating antagonist but is also really, really chill.Rewriting scenes, because that's what you do on a podcast. There's a mutuality and wanting more cost or risk within the Percy Jackson films, but that will never happen because there will never be a third film.Recommendations:One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware (2024)Shesmadeofwords PodcastLake Mungo (2008)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Adapt Deez, a brand new season of GateCrashers, is dedicated to appreciating media adaptations in all their many forms! From the classic book-to-movie adaptations to the many iterations associated and in-between, episodes of Adapt Deez will focus on a specific property and its (officially licensed) adaptations. Not simply a recounting of the differences and similarities between each adaptation, Adapt Deez aims to highlight the ways in which each iteration shines and how its individual media-specific properties—such as film scores, casting, and packaging—elevate the material and affect the way each work is received. In today's episode, Amanda and Jon discuss the many iterations of The Lightning Thief, the first book in the Percy Jackon & the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. Originally published in 2005, The Lightning Thief has gone on to receive critical acclaim and has since spawned numerous adaptations and launched the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, a media franchise consisting of various mediums, including three additional book series, several standalone novels, graphic novel adaptations, short story collections, films, a television series, a musical, a video game, and more. The Lightning Thief follows 12-year-old Percy Jackson, who lives with ADHD and dyslexia. When on a school field trip, he encounters a Fury, a goddess of vengeance sent to eliminate him. Though he survives the encounter, nothing about Percy's life will ever be the same, especially when he learns that his best friend Grover is actually a satyr assigned to protect him and his favorite teacher turns out to be a centaur named Chiron. Things continue to spiral until Percy arrives at Camp Half-Blood—a protective stronghold for demigods, or children of Greek gods—and is informed that Zeus believes Percy has stolen his master lightning bolt, sending Percy on a dangerous quest to retrieve it or risk further peril. Focusing on the first book, Amanda and Jon dive into both the 2010 film adaptation Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief—directed by Chris Columbus and starring “white boy of the century” Logan Lerman as the titular Percy Jackson—and the recently released Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians (with a special shout out to the Off-Broadway musical of the same name).

This week, Tommy is joined by actors Joey King and Logan Lerman who are currently starring in the limited series, We Were the Lucky Ones, out now on Hulu. The series is inspired by the true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War 2, determined to survive and reunite. We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the 20th century's darkest moments, the human spirit can endure and even thrive. Today, Joey and Logan open up about working on a series that is deeply personal to them, they reflect back on The Kissing Booth franchise and The Percy Jackson films: projects that made them become household names, how they are uncomfortable with the concept of being famous, being proud of where they are in this moment in their careers, and both of their unfortunate experiences with shaving for the first time. ARONOFSKY SEASON! NOAHChapter 3, Episode 2: So the Voice of Kenneth spake unto The Good, The Pod, and the Ugly, and it sayeth: Let there be NOAH (2014); and all the peoples then of the world rejoiced for Darren Aronofsky for his blockbuster that bringeth forth He of the Scarf his firsteth and onlyeth picture to be No. 1 opening weekend at the box office. As the temporal pincer movement winds down, guest Ryan returns with an extra squeaky chair to discuss this bold and big-budget entry into the Aronofsky canon. According to research by Thomas, Paramount's marketing budget for Noah was over $100M, nearly as much as it cost to shoot the film, airing advertisements during commercial breaks in the Super Bowl and the 2014 Winter Olympics. This Easter weekend release would also have YA and graphic novel tie-ins.Russell Crowe, who as offered the lead role of The Fountain, plays the titular Noah, Anthony Hopkins plays his grandfather Methuselah, and Logan Lerman is a joke to Ken's begats for some reason. Ari Handel returns to produce and puts quill to parchment with Aronofsky for their second corroborative writing credit (their first being Chapter 3, Episode from last week's The Fountain), Matthew Libatique shoots, and Mark Margolis plays a Watcher (a stone angel fallen from Heaven during the Creation that lusted for Earthly women and would father the Nephilim because—you know what? not worth your time reading). And Jennifer Connelly returns (last seen in Requiem for a Dream). Listen closely for the glee in Thomas's voice as the hosts comb through repetitious verses of Genesis desperate for the dry ground of understanding after being flooded with Lord of the Rings-style imagery for 2 hours and 18 minutes. Stay awake for when his dogs reacting to Ken's fond desire to adopt an armadillo dog. And hear Ryan suggest that Tubal-Cain had some good ideas.
