The featured artist in this episode of the Freio Music Podcast is Phutureprimitive aka Rain, a Bay Area producer and songwriter. His early childhood was spent sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear. Continuing his early fascination, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation... and Phutureprimitive was born. Music is one of the arts that can be healing for many people. From moments of sadness, joy, rage, music is there to accompany us, and like many of us, today's guest, Phutureprimitive, found passion and refuge in music. Imagine having a car accident and using the insurance money on a musical instrument that would change your life, leading you to fame, concerts, and a life where music is everything; this is the story of Phutureprimitive. Learn how self-commitment led Phutureprimitive to be the successful person he is today and start applying it in your life. Say no to excuses. ABOUT PHUTURE PRIMITIVE Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Bay Area producer and songwriter Rain. Early childhood photos reveal Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear... a true sign of things to come. Continuing his early fascination with music, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full-blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation... and Phutureprimitive was born. Phutureprimitive's music is singular and unique in its approach. Lush melodies drift across intricate rhythms, groove-heavy beats, and warm, fuzzy bass lines. Often exploring a dark and dense palette, his music also manages to convey a sense of tranquility and beauty, engaging the listener into hypnotic movement and often escalating into a full-on kinetic experience. Shimmering with cinematic qualities, his music ultimately speaks to the body, mind, and soul. Milkcrate Mechanic began experimenting with mixing wax over 2 decades ago. The name came from being one of the last DJ's still carrying crate after crate up and down stairs, not updating DJ equipment to CDJs or even a laptop. After many years Mr. Milkcrate can't be tied down to a specific genre, his sound can be described as unique, funky fresh and infinitely danceable. This has given him a chance to share a stage with artists Phutureprimitive, Griz, Sub-Swara, JPOD, Dieslboy, Enzymes, Freq Nasty, Logisticalone plus countless local and regional talent. Aside from playing music he started Milkcrate Productions. Inspired from attending and hosting a theme camp at Burning Man. The Production Company was created to provide locals (many of them their first time) a bigger and better platform with which to perform. Since 2008 the mission statement for Milkcrate Productions has been and will always be, "Bringing the community together through art and music". Thus began Milkcrate Monday at the Palace and Badlander complex which later became Milkcrate Wednesday and after a decade became the longest running DJ weekly in the state. Some Words form the Man Himself- Hailing from the beautiful Missoula Valley my biggest inspiration has always been bringing something new and different to our community and providing up and coming artists a much needed outlet. Honestly running a weekly plus often a headliner show or festival on the weekend was a lot of work but always worth it. Another major inspiration is my wonderful wife Kitty! Without her love and support I don't know that many of these shows would have happened. In addition to the weekly at the Complex, I helped with major festivals across the state and beyond. I had the honor of playing and helping build and promote events such as Shine, Pirate Party, Neon City, LYMEF, Forest Creatures and many more! Inspired by the Burning Man Festival I constructed a couple of geodesic domes, an art vehicle (Boxy Brown RIP), a fire breathing dragon head and two twenty foot flame cannons just to add to the outdoor DJ experience.Watching this music scene grow and flourish has always been my biggest inspiration. However being able to host artists in my own home during their first trip to the Treasure State has been amazing as well. Having artists such as CloZee and JPOD stay with you and realizing that not only are they fantastic musicians but also amazing genuine people is nothing short of humbling. This mix includes some new jams as well as some classics dusted off and resurrected from "the crate". Enjoy! -Milkcrate Mechanic- For more of his amazing mixes check out https://soundcloud.com/milkcrate-mechanic?ref=clipboard&p=i&c=0

Ooohhh, we kick it off with a little mashup dropping Lorde low courtesy of Ester Dean. That's right. Die Antwoord after that with Ninja flowing like no other. Danny Brown and A-Trak after that with a couple of wicked Congo Natty tracks in there too. DJ Vadim remix Terrorist with some George W Bush and then Barrington Levy and Beenie Man keeps the theme with Murderer. Phutureprimitive remixes Massive Attack while Youth remixes the Ozric Tentacles before DJ Shadow gets remixed! The bpms get cranked with The Qemists and some seriously old school Squarepusher. We catch our breath via Daft Punk and swing our hips into the end with a joint production of DJ Disk and Tim Love Lee and C2C reminds us to be happy. This week we're pleased to welcome Oakland's DJ Sychosis to The Armory. Press play. Get down. Alex Dias (aka Sychosis) has spent over ten years in the San Francisco Electronic Music scene as a DJ, producer, and promoter. In the studio, Sychosis is a machine. His bangin' edits, originals, and remixes have been played on dance floors and featured in mixes worldwide. With releases on Orphan Music, Toast N Jam, Breakz R Boss and support from the likes of Phutureprimitive, Marten Horger, Left/Right, The Crystal Method, Refracture, Dylan Sanders, J-Roc(Sould Out Djs), Dj Frenzy, Lady Waks, Fort Knox Five, Krafty Kuts and Rel1 he is quickly getting noticed as a major up and coming player in the breaks scene. He also is a reviews writer for 2012 Breakspoll Nominee Life Support Machine and has interviewed FreQ Nasty, Rektchordz, and Sub Slayers among others. I'm joined by my lunatic friends to talk about our antics at the Phutureprimitive show in El Paso and Albuquerque including Rob's brush with death by lacerated "eusnophagus". We also touch on their affinity for Tinder and the future of First Fridays/La Parada.
Another episode from The Howe Sound System
Montreal's Killa-Jewel kicks it off this week with her track Tempo, then Beat Junkies legends J-Rocc & Babu bring a WWII Intro. Kid Koala's project The Slew gives us 100% and 2econd Class Citizen gets us to Step Inside. JFB cuts together his Midnight (DJ Shadow) Routine and French DMC Team Champs Birdy Nam Nam gives us the rhythmic Abbesses. Dan The Automator's Handsome Boy Modelling School lets us know that Rock n' Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) and we thank them for it. The show finds a future dubby groove with the fresh off the presses Basement Dub from Bluetech, and a Bluetech rework of Abakus' Cruise Control. Phutureprimitive brings The Enemy, then Miami, the Foals track gets remixed. The show finishes up with a new one from one of our faves Phaeleh, called Here Comes The Sun.
True to form we're all over the map this week on HSS. We kick it off Malian style with a head nodder by Vieux Farka Toure. The gears get decidedly shifted as switch into some dark beats courtesy of Phaeleh. The identity crisis continues as we jump into Beirut and then we settle down into some Doomtree hiphop. Second half of the show is all bass. A brand new one from Shpongle leads us into some Phutureprimitive. Personal highlight of the week comes next with the big bass and beats from Gramatik and we close it with a gnarly and heavy one from the mighty Reso. Yesssss. Tracklist: Vieux Farka Toure - Diaraby Magni Phaeleh - Reflections Beirut - Guyamas Sonora YACHT - Second Summer (RAC Remix) Sims - Pay No Mind Redo Doomtree - Last Call Shpongle - Brain In A Fishtank Phutureprimitive - Vamp Gramatik - Illusion of Choice Reso - Otacon
The show starts ambient this week with one from Harold Budd & Brian Eno. Polygon Ring brings Whitewards from the OneonTwoism project, then we hear from BC local Adham Shaikh. Karsh Kale gives us a Cinematic Reprise, then Lisa Gerrard & Marcello De Francisci get atmospheric with Geisha. The show starts to bring the bass with a new one from Phutureprimitive and then we head overseas to hear from the UK Garage/Bristol Sound scene. The second half opens with a beauty from Phaeleh called Lament, and we hear the classic dubstep track Shinein from Skream. Thelem gets kinda scary with Elemental Fears, and show fave Reso gets his Exoframe spun. Loz Contreras from Leeds wraps up the show with their Sarajevo (Blackmill Remix).
Percussive and glitchy is how it starts moving this week. We hear some Hang Drum from David Kuckhermann and then we head into the melodic glitch of Tinaedae and o9. We slow it down a bit with The Boats and then go back a ways with Boards of Canada. Philadelphia's City Rain remixes Obfusc and drops one of his own called Between Two Minds. The show brings the bass with a Phutureprimitive remix of Massive Attack's classic Teardrop then DJ Vadim and Version Big-Fi move air in front of the subs, warming them for Ott, who is in town tonight. Tracklist: 0:00 David Kuckhermann - Asymetric Refraction 2:30 Tinaedae - Torchlights 4:24 o9 - Terminal Red 7:57 The Boats - It's Not Your Fault (It's How Air Works) 12:14 Boards of Canada - Amo Bishop Roden 18:24 Obfusc - Amateur Cartography (City Rain Remix) 21:37 City Rain - Between Two Minds 29:04 Massive Attack - Teardrop (Phutureprimitive Remix) 33:34 DJ Vadim - Black Is Black (JFB Remix) 39:03 Version Big-Fi - Serious Dub 44:30 Ott - Squirrel and Biscuits 50:30 Phutureprimitive - Cryogenic Dreams
It all starts with a throwback to the 80s with Bronski Beat. We continue with the 808 and female vocals theme as we go into more contemporary tunes from Born Gold and a bangin' Austra remix from Mark Pistel. Aphex Twin drops a remix and then show fav Santogold sings us to the break with Say Aha. We shift gears into some psydubby territory but not withouth passing through some Flamenco flavour from Gustavo Santaolalla and Phutureprimitive. The hips start to wiggle as we move into Beanfield and we end off with the tripped out beats of Die Antwoord's Zefside Zol. Tracklist: Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy (Full 12" Version) Born Gold - Ferocious Body Austra - Lose It (Mark Pistel Dub Remix) Aphex Twin - DMX Krew - You Can't Hide Your Love Away (Hidden Love Mix) Santogold - Say Aha Gustavo Santaolalla - Zenda Phutureprimitive - Spanish Fly (Flamenco Dub Pt.1) Solar Fields - Magic Eye (Remix) Beanfield - Keep On Believing Die Antwoord - Zefside Zol
Must be the effect of the summer heat 'cause this week's show is hot! We start it all off with some old school dubstep from Skream before building into some deep bass from Phutureprimitive but not before a little segue way through some jungle first. Then the psychedelics kick in with Yggdrasil and their epic psytrance/dub/reggae track. Now that we're sweatin' a little we bring in Birdy Nam Nam with the bad ass Escape and follow it up with the rad Miss Chang by Chinese Man. Beenie Man and Burning Spear bring the old school dub into the mix followed by DJ Vadim dropping some new school dubby beats with Strictly Rockers 215. We bring it down and out with Kuba's Let Go. Quality bass music for the entire hour. Tracklist: Skream - Late Night Request Line Lee "Scratch" Perry - Jungle Youth (Congo Natty Remix) Phutureprimitive - The Changelling Yggdrasil - Ryggsill Beats Antique - Louie's Lullaby Birdy Nam Nam - Escape Chinese Man - Miss Chang Beenie Man - Murderer Burning Spear - Black Wa-Da-Da DJ Vadim - Strictly Rockers 215 Kuba - Let Go
We live up to our tagline this week as we drop some heavy bass, blips and beats. We start off with some psychedelic techno heavily influenced by dubstep production styles with a couple selections by Phutureprimitive. We add a little world sound to the psydub mix as we drop some Temple Step Project and the mighty Ott. Things get a little glitchier as The Glitch Mob brings a remix into town and we finish off in maximum intensity with the frenetic Android Porn remix by Mochipet. Warm up the sub! It's time for the Howe Sound. Tracklist: Xotica- Phutureprimitive Cryogenic Dreams - Phutureprimitive Medecine Temple - Temple Step Project Adrift In Hilbert Space - Ott Space Between - Desert Dwellers Red Dress (Glitch Mob edit) - TV On The Radio Battling Go-Go Yubar - edIT Android Porn (Mochipet Godzilla Porn Remix) - Kraddy
