At the age of 16, Lorde went #1 across the world. She was catapulted from the suburbs of Auckland to the Grammy's stage, winning Song of the Year. 12 years and four albums later, she's continued to defy expectations as a pop artist and is one of the most gifted songwriters of our time. This is an extended edit of a Take 5 that was filmed for the TV series, but this podcast is an extended edit - capturing even more stories, insight, and sounds. It's an incredible conversation with one of the most thoughtful people I've met. Lorde has been going through a massive period of change. A chrysalis, taking new form. So I worked up a Take 5 theme to draw that out. And from Lucinda Williams to Westerman to something very close to home, hearing her speak about the craft of song is a rare treat.Lorde's song choices:Lucinda Williams – 'Fruits of My Labor'Bronski Beat – 'Smalltown Boy'Nina Simone – 'Suzanne'Westerman – 'Confirmation'Charli xcx & Lorde – 'Girl, so confusing featuring lorde'00:00 Introduction and Podcast Overview00:49 Lorde's Early Influences and First Song Choice02:04 Lucinda Williams' Impact on Lorde09:30 Lorde's Childhood and Musical Beginnings12:56 The Mystery of Songwriting14:02 Second Song Choice: Small Town Boy24:10 Reflecting on Teenage Years and Womanhood28:22 Lorde's Relationship with Her Parents30:18 Third Song Choice: Suzanne30:27 Nina Simone's Transformative Cover of 'Suzanne'31:16 Leonard Cohen's Inspiration and Poetic Imagery32:12 Nina Simone's Unique Interpretation35:39 Exploring Gender and Identity in Music36:36 The Impact of Personal Transformation39:48 The Creative Process Behind 'Virgin'46:20 The Emotional Journey of 'Girl So Confusing'50:06 Reflections on Vulnerability and Friendship55:22 Concluding Thoughts and Future PlansWatch Take 5 on ABC iview:https://iview.abc.net.au/show/take-5-with-zan-rowe

Playliste: Donna Summer - I feel love Sylvester - You make me feel (Mighty real) Sparks - The number one song in heaven Patrick Cowley - Menergy The Flirts - Passion New Order - Blue Monday Evelyn Thomas - High energy Bronski Beat - Smalltown boy Dead Or Alive - You spin me round (Like a record) Kim Wilde - You keep me hangin' on Jessie Ware - Save a kiss

On this week's show, we celebrate Pride Month with the LGBTQ+ icons of queer country & new wave, and pour one out for legends Sly Stone and Brian Wilson as well as the sorely underrated Jill Sobule. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

Kindred know-it-alls Deon and Jay kick knowledge…f#@% it, you know where this is going. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, kooky, knuckleheaded yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-ninth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru J, so naturally, they went with K. Our favorite selections from the K section in outr collections mixtape: [SIDE ONE] (1) Al Gromer Khan – Konya (2) John Krautner – I Need Sugar (3) Rahsaan Roland Kirk – Freaks for the Festival Part One (4) Kitchens of Distinction – Railwayed (5) Khruangbin featuring Nina Simone – Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair [SIDE TWO] (1) The Kingbees – Man Made for Love (2) Key-Matic – Breakin' in Space (3) Klark Kent – Away From Home (4) Kris Kristofferson – Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Goes (5) The Korgis – Perfect Hostess Sonic contributors to LLR podcast episode 39 include: Holland-Dozier-Holland, Brothers Johnson, Head Hunters, Sault, Blues Brothers, Donald Trump, The Alkoholiks, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Dreamville, J. A new dance trend is getting Gen X parents to show their Gen Z kids how they danced back in the day, to the tune of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy.” Also this week, The Wall Street Journal reported that consulting and professional services giant PricewaterhouseCoopers is now OpenAI’s largest customer and the first reseller of ChatGPT’s enterprise tier, which is aimed at businesses.
