Development of The Last of Us began in 2009, soon after the release of Naughty Dog's previous game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. For the first time in the company's history, Naughty Dog split into two teams; while one team developed Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, the other half developed The Last of Us. The relationship between Joel and Ellie became the focus, with all other elements developed around it. Actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson portrayed Joel and Ellie, respectively, through voice and motion capture, and assisted creative director Neil Druckmann with the development of the characters and story. The original score was composed and performed by Gustavo Santaolalla.
Twitch boss Dan Clancy remarked that the company is still too big, but despite not being profitable, there's no risk of them being cut loose by parent company Amazon. And finally, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has a new playable character: the game's composer, Gustavo Santaolalla. He'll be playable in the game's guitar mode. Also this will be Stella's last episode as a regular Daily Fix host, let's show our appreciation in the comments!
Bom podcast!

The small Andean instrument has been core to the success of the Argentine film composer and music producer on projects like The Last of Us video game, 2005's Brokeback Mountain and 2006's Babel.
Legendary music producer Gustavo Santaolalla has crafted the soundtrack to Rock En Español, producing career-defining albums for Café Tacvba, Molotov, Juanes, and many more. He is one of only three composers to win consecutive Academy Awards for Best Original Score for Brokeback Mountain and Babel. In our wide-ranging conversation, Gustavo shares his philosophical views on art, humanity, the spiritual connection he finds in music, and the state of the creative industry today. We begin with how Gustavo's hard-knock life in 1960s Argentina led to an explosion of boundary-pushing creativity still felt in music today.Episode Key Quotes:"The album 'Arcoiris' is a blueprint of my career. In that album, you're going to find the music for the movies, the songs, the production tricks.""It's creativity, art, and music that moves you in any art. It's what keeps us sane.""In the next 20 years, we're going to have to make big decisions and big changes or this can go away, really."Highly Relevant PlaylistThe Last Of Us - Gustavo SantaolallaEres - Cafe TacvubaFrijolero - Molotov
Academy Award-winning composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Gustavo Santaolalla joins Score: The Podcast for a lively conversation about the phenomenon his music helped create in The Last of Us, and why it's different than any of his other work. Plus, writing the score to Brokeback Mountain prior to anything being filmed, how the records he made with the band Arco Iris (at age 18) become a blueprint for his career, and how he put the instrument "ronroco" on the map. Gustavo also shares details about his upcoming projects, including a performance in October at the World Soundtrack Awards in Ghent, Belgium, where he will be with our own Robert Kraft.

When you're lost in the darkness...look for this episode of Reap the Spoils! This time we try something new - instead of talking about a video game, we talk about a show based on a video game. Join us as we discuss the simple gameplay of navigating a streaming service, changes made from source material, and what is probably the best video game adaptation in a group where the bar is set admittedly pretty low.Note: The music track at the start of the episode is “The Path (A New Beginning)”, composed by Gustavo Santaolalla for the The Last of Us Original Soundtrack. Composer David Fleming sits down for a brand new Film.Music.Media conversation! Dave shares his journey to becoming a composer including getting his start working with composers like Atli Örvarsson and Hans Zimmer. Dave also talks about his work as an additional composer on certain projects like Hans Zimmer's Dune, and what it's like being part of a music team. For this chat we take a look at Dave's general approach to several projects including South Of Heaven, Hillbilly Elegy, and The Unforgivable. The latter two were co-scored with Hans Zimmer. We also dive into Dave's recent score with Hans to the French Canadian miniseries, The Night Logan Woke Up. Dave also talks about co-scoring The Last Of Us on HBO. Hear how he worked separately from the series' lead composer Gustavo Santaolalla to help flesh out certain scenes and to add tension and atmosphere to the overall structure of the series. It's been one of the TV events of the year, and we're delighted to be celebrating its success with two of the composers who worked on it. Based on the 2013 video game, The Last Of Us tells the story of Ellie and Joel as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world in which a mass fungal outbreak has caused humanity to collapse, with the infected turned into bloodthirsty Zombie-like creatures. The game was scored by Gustavo Santaolalla, who returns to work alongside David Fleming on the HBO show - which you can watch on Sky and Now TV.
"Joel is sooo babygirl-coded."This week we're joined by our friend Becca Rowland, who first guested on our original The Last of Us episode, to discuss the stellar HBO adaptation of Naughty Dog's beloved 2013 video game. We knew that we would probably want to discuss this season of television, compare it to our thoughts the game, and talk about how much we are head-over-heels, madly, deeply in love with Pedro Pascal & would trade the world for a journey with him across a post-apocalyptic America, but it wasn't until after episode 3 broke our hearts into tiny little pieces that we knew we absolutely HAD to get on the mics and discuss the breadth of queer content on this show. Now that season 1 is wrapped, we get into Bill and Frank, Ellie & Riley, and so much more from this season, as well as our thoughts on its (few) shortcomings, the beauty of queer joy in apocalypses, and speculation/hopes for the future seasons as the show begins to adapt Part 2. We can't wait to see Bella Ramsey continue to slay (literally & metaphorically)========Get in touch with us!EMAIL US at gayforplaypodcast@gmail.comFOLLOW G4P Twitter: @GayForPlayPodInstagram: @GayForPlayPodTwitch: twitch.tv/gayforplaypodSupport the Show & Unlock Bonus Episodes on our PATREON========CREDITSIntro and outro music by Connor Marsh (@connorjmarshmallow)Show art by Benny Kessler (@retro.spectacle.studio)Special thanks to our patrons: Blueberri Mary, Elijah Punzal, Trevor McTavish, Travis Ryans & Martha Turner
