At least 1.2 million Americans have died from COVID-19; thousands of them just since January. As the nation marks five years since the pandemic-causing virus appeared in this country, we'll look at how Native Americans have recovered — and how they haven't. Businesses closed down or have yet to regain their pre-pandemic levels, school enrollment remains weakened, and trust in medical science — something Native Americans already lacked — is diminished. We'll examine what we learned from the unprecedented public health emergency five years later. GUESTS Gwendena Lee-Gatewood (White Mountain Apache), former chairwoman of the White Mountain Apache Tribe Dr. Rebecca St. Germaine (Lac Courte Oreilles), director of tribal health care administration at St. Germaine Data Innovations Jonathan Nez (Diné), former Navajo Nation President Lavinia Cody (Diné), certified school Diné counselor

This year, the Grand County School District started a program called the Student Career Success Center to help boost historically low graduation rates. The program is intended to help students earn enough credits to graduate by offering a flexible, online schedule that allows students to work while still attending high school. The program director says it will have helped at least 6 students graduate who otherwise would not have received a diploma. - Show Notes - https://gchs.grandschools.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=4251335&type=d&pREC_ID=2517314

Nutrition advocates say the nationwide ‘free meals for all' program helped address food insecurity and childhood hunger for millions during the first two years of the pandemic. But that's going away this school year. Now families who are above certain federal income thresholds will once again have to pay for their children's lunches. And experts say that can be tricky in Moab, where these income thresholds don't necessarily reflect the cost of living here. Plus, ancient human footprints were recently discovered in the Great Salt Lake Desert by two archaeologists on their way to an excavation site. // Show Notes: // Photo: Margaret L Hopkin Middle School. As students return to school this week, nutrition advocates worry that the expiration of the ‘free meals for all' program will leave some families falling through the cracks – making too much money to qualify for free and reduced lunch, but not enough to comfortably afford the meals. // Grand County School District Meal info Sheet https://www.grandschools.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1653097&type=d&pREC_ID=1798917 // Need Help Applying for Free/Reduced Lunch? Many of us look around and are driven to despair. But this week, Uri and Rivky speak to Rabbi Dr. Gil Perl, head of school at the Kohelet Yeshiva, about how Kohelet has pivoted in the last few weeks, fabricating special face shields for local Philadelphia medical professionals who are on the front lines battling COVID-19. Rabbi Perl tells us how this project came about, why he sees this as fitting perfectly into the educational model of Kohelet, and how he sees the lessons going forward into a post-corona age, whenever that may be. We have all had a dream or a goal that we wanted to accomplish, but then told ourselves “that's not for me!” “I cant possibly do that!!” In this episode of Blooming is a Habit (BIAH) S1: E6 How to Prepare Girls and Women for the Future, Cristina Jacobs Easton, the Upper School Principal at Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) helps us remember that 1. You belong wherever you want to be. 2. You can do anything you put your mind to, but this comes with hard work, perseverance, and self reflection. 3. Success is not achieved by being fearless, but by being so committed to your dreams that you take action even while scared, and find ways to cope mindfully. 4. Girls and women can better plan for their future and be their best selves when they are open and honest about the challenges and success they experienced throughout their academic, personal, and professional journeys! 5. There is no such thing as perfection. Mistakes help all of us learn and grow. These lessons start in school. Let's make it foundational material! Guest Bio Continued.
