But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” John 21:7-11 — “When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus told them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 -- “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” 1 Peter 1:8 – “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.”

“We hold patents on a few gadgets we confiscated from visitors. This is the story of how necessity in the cosmos became the mother of invention on Earth. Picture working in an environment where temperatures swing from a scorching +250°F in direct sunlight to a bone-chilling -250°F in the shade, where traditional lubricants freeze or evaporate, and where the absence of air means no natural cooling. The solutions developed for these extreme conditions would eventually trickle down to our garages and workshops, spawning not just the cordless drill but an entire family of battery-powered tools that have liberated us from the tyranny of power cords. But the story doesn't end there. These cosmic hand-me-downs represent more than just clever adaptations - they're testament to human ingenuity under the most extreme conditions imaginable. When engineers had to solve problems where failure wasn't an option, up there, they created solutions so robust and versatile that they transformed life, down here, on Earth. How does drawing from experiments and scientists on the fringes of science help all of science and strengthen the core? How does luck actually work? How did the early members of NASA treat scientists who made mistakes in the quest to reach the moon?Richard Wiseman is a professor of the public understanding of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, a magician, performer, and the author of several books. Two of his latest titles are Moonshot: What Landing a Man on the Moon Teaches Us About Collaboration, Creativity, and the Mind-set for Success and Quirkology: The Curious Science of Everyday Lives.Greg and Richard discuss Richard's unique career path, his popular books, and how psychology can have real-world applications. The conversation delves into various topics such as the public's fascination with luck, the importance of empirical research, and the psychology behind the successful teamwork that achieved the Apollo moon landings. Wiseman also shares insights from his background in magic and how it has influenced his understanding of human perception and deception. The episode highlights the need for applying psychological research to improve everyday life and the significant role of creativity and open-mindedness in both science and education.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Why conservative thinking limits scientific innovation34:01: Organizations, I think, have become very conservative in terms of risk-taking, which is sort of sad for the next generation of students within science. I think we want to encourage people to be expansive thinkers, to have crazy ideas. Obviously, you need to find out whether they're true or not. But again, even within science, I think we're quite conservative. We want to encourage students to think in a certain way, to do science in a certain way, and so on. And I'm just rather pro the more maverick approach in some extent; the only students we have are those people that are good at passing exams. And I often think, I wonder what talent is out there that just happened to not be so good at passing exams—that maybe who have had creative, amazing ideas that would have changed the world, and they don't sit in our labs or in our universities because they're not the sort of people who want to sit in a hall and write something on a piece of paper. Why is creativity important in science?37:56: I'm so pro-creativity in science and getting people to think differently because that's where your good ideas are going to come from, and sometimes those people are not the ones that perform best in an exam hall. They're the ones who just want to get out there and change the world. What magic taught Richard about psychology50:47: Magic is incredibly important, and it shows you, fundamentally, that you can be very, very confident and very, very wrong. You know, when a magician shows you an empty box and makes something appear in it, the audience has to be 100 percent certain that there's nothing in that box. And they are 100 percent wrong because an object is going to appear in that box. So it should teach us a bit of humility as well. How Quirkology was born from a disappointing psychology experience21:06: Quirkology came about because psychology broke my heart a bit. People are astonishing—when you think of your friends, partners, and family, they're amazing, complex, and fun to talk about. They experience emotions, behave differently in crowds, do things that surprise you, do things that disappoint you, and so on. That kind of buzzy energy of humanity, which was the reason I got into psychology, I really just loved it. Then I'd open a psychology journal, and I just saw this dusty old paper that reduced that buzzing humanity to a number that wasn't very interesting, and I thought, there must be some interesting psychology out there; there has to be. And that was the path into quirkology, where it was all the quirky psychology that I love, some of which I've carried out myself.Show Links:Recommended Resources:William JamesNeo-FreudianismBayesian inferenceMalinowski, the Trobriand people and the Kula (anthropologyreview.org)Glynn LunneyApollo 1Apollo 11Christopher C. Use this link to send us thoughts or questions! The Weaving the Future Podcast aims to foster conversation and tangible insights on how we can live and work in ways that are aligned, sacred, equitable and joyful. Every month, we start by taking some time to frame and get some shared understanding of a topic, followed by a group discussion centred around questions that are emerging, interesting or challenging. This episode kicks off a regular monthly schedule of community discussions, which are also live recordings for the podcast and YouTube versions of these episodes. We focus on the questions: What would a different economic system look like? How would that look and feel different in our everyday lives?I start by sharing takeaways from attending the Ownership Matters conference in Victoria, BC in early May 2024. The model of Community Ownership presented in this work presents one of the most exciting and promising ideas for how we might shift our economic system from something abstract into something that brings our hearts, everyday lives and sense of empowerment back into how we talk about economics. We then had a group discussion focused on these questions:- What is a vision for a different economic system?- We do we want our everyday lives to look like? If we could create the perfect life for yourself and your community, what would that look like?- What needs to happen to support this way of living? This includes the question of what economic system would support the everyday lives we are hoping for.You can find the video version of this episode here: https://youtu.be/atZgl0Cc1ms Links for Weaving the Future and Robyn McLean:https://weavingthefuture.net/ - Information about the podcast, courses and other opportunities to connecthttps://tapestrycollectiveco-op.com/ - Information about consulting services of Tapestry Collective Co-ophttps://calendly.com/robyntapestry/weaving-the-future-initial-consult - Book a free initial consult to talk about what would support you to make meaningful change in the worldLinks and resources for this episode, including a few examples of community ownership in BC and Canada:https://ownershipmatters.ca/ - Report and resources about building community wealth in Canada, part of a larger research project of Royal Roads University and Scale Institute and is supported by funding from the Vancouver Foundation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.https://www.propoliscooperative.com/bond-campaign - Chance to invest in a community bond campaign to build affordable green homes in Kamloops, BC. The grace-taught life sputters to a stop unless it is centered on the finished and continued work of Christ. Do you want to stop being offended when someone looks at you the wrong way? Do you want to meditate on God's Word day and night? Do you want to live in earnest hope for Christ's return? Titus 2:14-15 shows how Christ's person and work connects to the rest of our lives as believers. In this episode we see how Christ's work is the foundation of both our (1) Salvation and (2) Sanctification. He gave Himself to redeem and purify us.

The Everyday Lives of Gay Men in Hainan: Sociality, Space and Time (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) by Dr. James Cummings explores the everyday lives of gay men in Hainan, an island province of the People's Republic of China. Taking an ethnographic and phenomenological approach, it asks how these men construct and experience ways of ‘sexual being' – as gay, homosexual, tongzhi and/or in the scene – and what these mean for the ways of living they see as possible within a socio-cultural, political and material context characterised by pervasive heteronormativity. It explores what it means for gay men in Hainan to ‘come into the scene', how internet and mobile technologies figure in their everyday processes of sexual categorisation and how these men negotiate orientations and disorientations towards the future in relation to dominant heterosexual life scripts of marriage and reproduction. This book offers vital insights into the production and restriction of non-heterosexual lives in diverse settings, while addressing universal questions of how certain ways of living are enabled and curtailed in living together with others through powerful conditions of uncertainty and precarity. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
