Join legendary drummer Simon Phillips for a reflective loo through his extraordinary five-decade career in music. From his early days as a teenage session prodigy in London’s bustling studio scene to becoming one of the most sought-after drummers in rock and jazz fusion, Simon shares the stories behind the grooves that defined generations. We walk through his formative years backing artists like Jeff Beck and Judas Priest, his iconic work with Toto where he brought explosive energy and technical precision to classics both new and old, and his ventures into jazz fusion with his own Protocol series and collaborations with players like Dave Weckl and Billy Cobham. Simon reflects on the evolution of drumming technology, from acoustic kits to electronic innovations, and how he’s adapted while maintaining his distinctive powerful yet nuanced style. Along the way, he opens up about the discipline required to stay at the top of his game, the challenges of balancing touring with studio work, and what keeps him inspired today. From recording sessions with The Who to his current projects and teaching the next generation of drummers, this is Simon Phillips unplugged—candid, insightful, and still very much in the pocket. Episode 84: Dave Weckl One of the most influential drummers of all time, today's guest is the legend, Dave Weckl. From his legendary years with Chick Corea's Elektric Band and Akoustic Band to his groundbreaking solo debut Master Plan, to his session work with Simon & Garfunkel, Nile Rodgers, George Benson, Mike Stern, Robert Plant, Madonna, and more, his drumming has defined modern fusion and inspired generations worldwide. This is the Dave Weckl deep dive! Two and a half hours long, intimate, honest, and open. Dave shares stories about his early breaks with Nite Sprite, French Toast, and landing the Simon & Garfunkel Reunion Tour that put him on the map. We dig into his days as a first-call New York session player in the 80s, and go deep inside his years with Chick Corea, from writing records like “Got a Match?” to how the Grammy-winning Akoustic Band came together, as Dave reflects on what made Chick so special as a bandleader. We talk about his solo career beginning with Master Plan, his longtime collaborations with Jay Oliver and Mike Stern, and studying with Freddie Gruber even at the height of his career. Dave has always pushed himself to grow as a player. We discuss how he created his signature Dave Weckl Vic Firth drumsticks, his Sabian Evolution and Legacy cymbal lines, and what led him to being the first person to put holes in cymbals. We talk about the Dave Weckl Band, teaching through his online school, and the importance of making musical choices on the drums rather than just displaying technique. This episode is packed with stories, insight, advice, and inspiration from one of the greatest drummers to ever sit behind the kit. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Dave Weckl. Really thrilled to be joined once again by one of the most in demand drummers in Rock n Roll, Brian Tichy back again for Part 2! We once again delve into Brian's amazing career, we kick off talking about Brian's time at the revered Berklee college of music in 1986 and how a drum clinic by a young (26 years old) Dave Weckl inspired him and still does to this day. Brian's enthusiasm and love for music shines through more than any other person i have ever spoken too, he delights in telling us about how he felt learning his first few simple grooves on the drums and the excitement that this brought him. We also talk about his current gig with the legendary Gene Simmons from Kiss! Kiss were the band that grabbed his attention as a young boy and how it felt when he got the call offering him in the gig. I have loved speaking to Brian for both of these episodes, he speaks total sense and has almost a childlike joy for music, be it making it or listening to it, i dare you to listen to these converstions and not be inspired by them. what a wonderfuly guy. Thanks Brian.

Bill Gibson began playing music at the age of seven. He found his passion for music when his father Ed Gibson, an architect by trade but a jazz drummer in his own right, began taking him to see such greats as The Count Basie Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, and The Buddy Rich Big Band. Inspired by big band jazz and rock & roll styles, Bill got his first drum kit at age fourteen, and began playing drums with local bands the following year. He soon became the drummer for Sound Hole and played his first tour in 1974 backing up Van Morrison. Bill is a founding member of Huey Lewis and the News, which he and other members of Sound Hole and the band Clover formed in 1979. 33 years later, the band is still going strong and has enjoyed enormous success with over 30 million albums sold worldwide, 19 top ten hits including "The Power of Love", "Stuck With You", and "Hip To Be Square", and multiple awards and award nominations. Bill remains an integral part of the band, lending his writing and singing talents as well as providing drums and percussion. Bill has been a Yamaha Drum Artist since 1985. Tonight's VIP is Mr. Chris Miskel, CEO of KENDRE Music Group. Chris is naturally gifted to do what he loves. He said he has never taken formal lessons and has gained the majority of his inspiration from mentors, Oscar Seaton Jr. and Khari Parker. He has admiration for Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl. In 2003, Chris began touring with guitarist Nick Colionne and in late 2006, with smooth jazz artist Brian Culbertson during his Soulful Christmas tour. He is currently touring with Brian Culbertson and Will Downing but has performed with a variety of artists. By playing with many musicians, Chris has acquired the ability to play the drums in multiple styles and genres of music. He believes adapting to various musical situations is essential to being a well-rounded musician. When Chris is home between tours, he continues strengthening his drumming techniques, solos, and improvisation by performing in local clubs and participating in jam sessions. According to Chris, "The vibe you receive from playing in local clubs allows you to stretch out and just play! Playing what I feel and being able to transcend my vibe to the fans and get a reaction from them is what makes my job wonderful". One quote he stands by is “If u do what you've always done you"ll get what you've always gotten.” #ChrisMiskel #drummer #jazz #rnb #music #BrianCulbertson #TiffanyRochelle #thepeoplescheerleader #HearMyHeart #chicago #WillDowning, #producerlife #musicdirector #bYou #LifeCoach #Success #Life #Encouragement #podcast #talkShow #Coach #GrowthMindset #Author #LifePurpose #mindset #motivation #inspiration #youtube #applepodcast #Spotify

Then, Matt talks about his experience judging alongside Aaron Spears and Dave Weckl at a recent drum competition, which initiates the topic of "judging" other drummers. In 2003 I interviewed Dave Weckl, a drummer whose unique talent and fire had won him induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2000. His performances with Paul Simon, George Benson, Michel Camilo, Robert Plant, Dave Grusin, Mike Stern and Anthony Jackson brought him public acclaim. But with his dynamic contribution to the Chick Corea Elektric Band and the Akoustic Band (1985 to 1991) Weckl became a jazz icon. In this interview, Weckl discusses his development, the influence of Steve Gadd, playing in complex meters, his sonic concepts, the use of computers, and his work with Chick Corea. He also talked about his albums as a leader and composer, revealing a thinking musician who blends razor sharp precision with passion. My guest this episode is Mr. Oz Noy. One of the most accomplished guitarists out there on the scene today, Oz has it all- amazing chops, vocabulary, technique, all delivered with touch, soul and tone. His 9 solo records capture all of this and, if that's not enough there's more; he uses the best rhythm sections in the world, surrounding himself with drummers including Dave Weckl, Keith Carlock, Anton Fig and bassists Will Lee, James Genus and Jimmy Haslip. As you'll hear in the podcast, touring all over the world with his own music isn't what he originally set out to do, but it's nice work if you can get it. He also has a nice resume of backing up artists in the studio and live such as Gavin Degraw, Richard Bona, Chris Botti,Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper, Clay Aiken, Akiko Yano and more. He also has a new band that you'll hear about called Ozone Squeeze. In this interview we'll discuss his early years in Tel Aviv, moving to NYC, putting together his first record (Oz Live) and how he rehearses the bands, pedals- (he'll talk about what his favorite most useful pedal is), his instructional videos for True Fire, current state of the blues in his opinion, influences and much, much more. Plus you get my usual doses of sarcasm and bad humor.
