Później przychodzi niesamowita satysfakcja z tego, co się osiągnęło. Ale wysokie góry są niebezpieczne. Wielu ludzi przepłaciło tę ciekawość życiem – przypomina.Psychika ważniejsza niż siłaPodróżnik podkreśla, że w górach równie ważna jak kondycja fizyczna jest znajomość własnego organizmu i odporność psychiczna.– Kluczowa jest znajomość swojego organizmu i tego, na co można sobie pozwolić, ale też jak daleko możemy się posunąć, przekraczając swoje słabości. Powyżej 4,5 tysiąca metrów powietrze się rozrzedza i organizm zaczyna to bardzo mocno odczuwać – pojawiają się bóle głowy, przyspieszony oddech, rośnie tętno – mówi.Na takich wysokościach nawet najprostsze czynności stają się ogromnym wysiłkiem.– Tam się nie biega jak w filmach. Postawienie kolejnego kroku wiąże się z nabraniem dwóch, trzech oddechów. Nawet latem powyżej 5 tysięcy metrów są temperatury ujemne, a powyżej 6 tysięcy dochodzą do minus 30 stopni. Trzeba gotować wodę, nieść jedzenie, robić aklimatyzację i wszystko dobrze zaplanować – opisuje.

 Góry nie zaczynają się od mięśni. Zaczynają się w głowie. Od ciekawości, od pytania „co jest wyżej” i od momentu, w którym człowiek po raz pierwszy przekracza własną granicę. Paweł Mamoń, podróżnik i miłośnik wysokich gór, w rozmowie radiowej opowiadał o tym, co naprawdę dzieje się z człowiekiem na dużych wysokościach – i dlaczego tak wielu wraca tam mimo realnego ryzyka.„Dla kogoś, kto poszukuje wrażeń, kto lubi wiedzieć, co jest za zakrętem, kto lubi wiedzieć, co jest wyżej, jak wysoko może zajść, jak je temperatury może wytrzymać.”To jednak nie jest opowieść o romantycznej przygodzie. Raczej o cienkiej linii między euforią a tragedią.Góry nie wybaczają. Psychika ważniejsza niż siłaMamoń podkreślał, że wysokie góry szybko weryfikują wyobrażenia. Powyżej 4,5 tysiąca metrów zaczyna się fizjologia, z którą nie da się negocjować: ból głowy, duszność, przyspieszony oddech, zimno. Każdy krok wymaga wysiłku, a błędy kosztują więcej niż na nizinach.„Powyżej 4,5 tys. metrów powietrze zaczyna się bardzo mocno rozrzedzać… Postawienie kroku następnego wiąże się z nabraniem dwóch, trzech oddechów nieraz.”Dlatego – jak mówił – kluczowa jest znajomość własnego organizmu i umiejętność ocenienia, kiedy należy się wycofać.„Znajomość swojego organizmu, na co można sobie pozwolić, ale też jak daleko możemy się posunąć przekraczając swoje granice.”Elbrus i moment, gdy rzeczywistość się rozpadaNajmocniejsza część rozmowy dotyczyła Elbrusa – góry pięknej, ale zdradliwej. Mamoń opisywał ją jako teren czynny sejsmicznie, z wyziewami siarki, które potrafią wpływać na świadomość. To tam jego partner z wyprawy zaczął doświadczać halucynacji.„Te wyziewy siarki spowodowały już halucynacje.”„Powiedział: ‘przecież widziałem cię, jechałeś maluchem'. A mnie tam w ogóle nie było.”To właśnie w takich momentach – tłumaczył – ludzie tracą orientację, wybierają zły kierunek i giną, spadając w przepaście.„Bardzo często ludzie tam właśnie giną na Elbrusie, bo podczas tych halucynacji idą nie w tą stronę, gdzie trzeba.”Uzależnienie od wysokości i rywalizacjaDlaczego więc wracają? Dlaczego ryzykują ponownie? Mamoń nie uciekał od trudnych odpowiedzi. Mówił wprost o uzależnieniu, o potrzebie sprawdzenia się i o rywalizacji, która potrafi przysłonić rozsądek.„To wciąga jak narkotyk, jak uzależnienie.”„Wchodzi jakiś element rywalizacji – kto szybciej wejdzie, kto wyżej wejdzie – i niestety nieraz to się kończy w taki sposób.”W tym kontekście wspomniał też o dramatycznych historiach z Himalajów, gdzie w sytuacjach granicznych wybór bywa brutalny.„Albo giną dwie osoby, albo jedną osobę się zostawia. Dla ratowania własnego życia.”Nocna burza i decyzja, która ratuje życieInnym obrazem, który zostaje w pamięci, była nocna burza pod Elbrusem. Błyskawice, wiatr dochodzący – jak relacjonował – do 130–140 km/h i moment, w którym odwrót przestaje być możliwy. Jedyną opcją było schronienie się za niewielkimi skałami.„Musimy się schronić za tymi skałami.”„Małe bryłki lodu nas bombardowały… nie można było ustać na nogach.”Po dwóch godzinach cisza. Pogoda odpuściła, a grupa mogła kontynuować wejście.„W pięknej pogodzie stanęliśmy wszyscy na szczycie.”Co zostaje po powrocie „na dół”Mimo wszystkich zagrożeń Mamoń mówił też o tym, co góry dają pozytywnego. O perspektywie, która zmienia sposób patrzenia na codzienne problemy.„Stanąć na szczycie i spojrzeć na świat z tej perspektywy… jest jakiś rodzaj euforii.”„Daje to moc w codziennym życiu. Dużo łatwiej jest pokonywać małe bariery.”Na koniec wrócił jeszcze do Kaukazu – regionu pięknego, ale naznaczonego konfliktami – i zostawił prostą, osobistą refleksję.„Konflikty tworzą politycy, a nie ludzie. Ludzie, których tam poznaliśmy, byli cudowni. To przepiękne miejsce.”
