Have you even seen the connection before? The text then moves to the story of the two demon possessed men in Matt 8:28-34. Rev Dr. Hirini Kaa uses his research for his doctoral thesis, and then book, to explore the coming of the Missionaries and the signing of the Treaty from a Maori, and in particular, Ngati Porou viewpoint. The key concept is matauranga - knowledge. Maori had a theological and philisophical framework which made sense of their world. They renegotiated this in light of the new knowledge presented by Pakeha. It was this matauranga that, more than anything, was guaranteeed in the Treaty. It is this matauranga that is finding expression today, and which we need as a nation, to stand along side the Pakeha viewpoint as we find our way in this rapidly changing world. His book - Te Hāhi Mihinare | The Māori Anglican Church by Hirini Kaa can be purchased at good book stores or from https://www.bwb.co.nz/books/hahi-mihinare/

Bishop Julius Trimble of The Indiana Episcopal Area along with Bishop Bishop LaTrelle Easterling of the Baltimore-Washington Episcopal Area engages in an in-depth conversation on matters of peace and justice, racism, the Capitol insurrection of January 6, and the state of the United Methodist Church. Bishop Easterling spoke of her personal experiences in dealing with the impact of the January 6 events in her community. She talks about how the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference was prepared to respond to the violence as they had already experienced vandalism and violence at African American UMC’s in Washington DC during the Black Lives Matter gatherings of the summer. Bishop Easterling spoke a prophetic word about the power and meaningfulness of the word “truth” in such a time as this referring to the story of Moses and Aaron from Exodus 32. Bishop Trimble spoke about the legacy of racism faced by baseball great Hank Aaron as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and the importance of taking the gospel seriously in a time when racism and other social ills have arisen. He comes from the same pulpit that Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once occupied at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. This Sunday is Reformation Sunday when we remember the ever-reforming tradition we are a part of. Perhaps no reform is more greatly needed in the church today than the reckoning of racism in our church and ourselves, which is why this Reformation Sunday we centralize the voice of our friend and Black preacher, the Rev Dr. Stephen Newby. Join us as he speaks to what Jesus does with difference in race.
Last Sunday we kicked off our fall series, "The Space Between Us: What Jesus Does with Difference," our chance to name and explore the issues that divide us. Today, we welcome the Rev Dr. Megan Rohrer (they/them), the first ordained trans pastor in the Lutheran church. Rooted in their own story, they will engage us in exploring what Jesus does with difference in gender and sexuality.
