We're back with a new episode in anticipation of this year's Blue Ox! Justin and Nate chatted with Leah Song of the sister-led group, Rising Appalachia. We discussed their journey around the country, developing their signature rendering of folk music and keeping rooted with a family that continues to inspire their music, pace of life and sense of place in the world. We listened to a couple of their songs and one from The Cody Sisters, who will be performing on stage and also conducting the guitar and mandolin workshops at this year's festival. Other new and recurring features are discussed, helping to serve as an introductory audioguide and to get excited about this quickly approaching weekend. Most widely recognized for co-founding the Rising Appalachia project with her sister, Chloe Smith - Leah is also a dedicated social activist who's been on the frontline for many fights on the environment, human rights, prison reform, and food justice. For this conversation we explore the intersection of folk music and activism, the role of storytelling in orienting humans in their environment, and the power of sharing music in times of uncertainty. This week we revisit a dynamic show featuring two musical acts that are countercultural icons in their own ways and in separate countries. American-born sisters, Leah Song and Chloe Smith, along with their band Rising Appalachia, share their unique brand of "Hillbilly World Music" and chat about how they promote the slow movement in their touring practices. Now exiled in Sweden, Egyptian Ramy Essam travels to eTown to share the songs that led to his becoming the voice of the 2011 Egyptian revolution that overthrew an oppressive leader. Also with us is Joseph Teipel who shares his story about Re:Vision, an organization dedicated to building food independence in the Westwood neighborhood of Denver. That's all this week on eTown! Visit our Youtube Channel to see artist interviews, live recordings, studio sessions, and more! As we turn inward at this time of year, we also turn back, longing for the comforts of a home that is lost to us now. Episode 082 offers a bit of a different trip than the usual Upful LIFE Podcast. This program is focused entirely on Asheville NC & surrouding Appalachia in the wake of unimaginable destruction wrought by Hurricane Helene in late September. The Asheville music and arts community is a beacon of light and creativity, full of ambitious artisans, dreamers n' doers whom I admire. The good folks of AVL and Appalachia need a whole lotta love, positive energy, prayers, and most importantly DONATIONS to continue their long, arduous process of recovery and rebuilding. This podcast presents four conversations between five different people rooted down in Appalachia, connected to the local music/arts community, and who each lived their own harrowing version of this same nightmare. It is an honor and privilege to offer a platform for these special souls to tell their storm stories, and ruminate on the realities of the recovery journey. Tune in for emotional, inspirational reflections from Leah Song (Rising Appalachia) and Andy Fyfe, Josh Blake of GFE and iamAVL, Wren Ashley from The Nohm Collective, and Brian Good of Asheville Music Hall. The region's two rivers carried whole houses downstream. What buildings that remain in the lower areas of Buncombe County are larded with a foot-deep layer of toxic mud. Many people died. The storm was prodigious. Official reports note that 2,300 structures were destroyed completely or made uninhabitable. That's homes, stores, and other businesses. The Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina was closed along its entire length, and its director said that some 10,000 trees had fallen into the roadway. Parts of the parkway were covered in landslide mud, while in other places the pavement had washed away entirely. In several locations, the North Fork Swannanoa River carved new courses, leaving at least one bridge over dry land and the water flowing a hundred yards to the west. Along the French Broad River south of downtown Asheville, the River Arts District was completely wiped out. The narrow, 14-mile long Hickory Nut Gorge, which drops about 1,800 feet between the town of Gerton and Lake Lure, much of the road is now reduced to a rocky creek bed. Estimates for regional damages are currently at $53 billion. In Appalachia, Hurricane Helene was a thousand-year-flood. It flattened towns and forests, washed roads away, and killed hundreds. But this story is not about the flood. It's about what happened after.A month after Hurricane Helene, our producer Justine Paradis visited Marshall, a tiny town in the Black Mountains of western North Carolina, a region renowned for its biodiversity, music, and art.She went to see what it really looks like on the ground in the wake of a disaster, and how people create systems to help each other. But what she found there wasn't just a model of mutual aid: it was a glimpse of another way to live with one another.Featuring Josh Copus, Becca Nicholson, Rachel Bennett, Steve Matlack, Keith Majeroni, and Ian Montgomery.Appearances by Meredith Silver, Anna Thompson, Kenneth Satterfield, Reid Creswell, Jim Purkerson, Jazz Maltz, Melanie Risch, and Alexandra Barao.Songs performed by Sheila Kay Adams, Analo Phillips, Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia, and William Ritter. Leah Song is one half of the musical duo Rising Appalachia - alongside her sister Chloe, they are an internationally touring folk ensemble steeped in the soul of the South that blends Americana music with lyrics, rhythm and poetry to form a unique sound influenced by a blend of Appalachian, Irish, Latin and world roots music. Leah was at Esalen Institute for a week this summer to dance and make music with Lucia Horan and Douglas Drummond's 5 Rhythms workshop, and she was kind enough to do a live interview on a Wednesday evening for a rapt audience of more than a hundred lucky souls. She spoke wisely about her history with activism, her love of 90's hip hop, her dynamic relationship with the festival scene, what slow music means to her, and a lot more. She even played several songs. What a gem!
Hi, I'm Carolyn Harding, producer/host of GrassRoot Ohio, conversations with everyday people, working on important issues, here in columbus and all around Ohio. For the past five years I've been honored to interview guests working for a better world in their communities, state, country, and, quite frankly, the world, in all areas of justice - environmental, social, racial and economic. My first guests were young activists working to pass the Lake Erie Bill of Rights, one of the first Rights of Nature laws ever to pass in the US, giving the citizens of Toledo legal rights to protect the health of their main drinking water source. I got to interview Ohio activists working on: Women's Reproductive Rights; Black lives matter; folks making home-made protective masks for health care workers at the top of the pandemic; common sense gun reform; running for public office, even when the party pre-selects/endorses and funds “winners” before the primaries; protecting LGBTQIA+ rights at the State house; ranked choice voting; curbside composting; safe streets; organic farming; protecting the Columbus Metro water supply from oil & gas production and radioactive waste, etc. I interviewed city-wide and state-wide ballot initiative organizers with campaigns to: give Columbus citizens the legal right to protect their water from oil and gas production; End Qualified Immunity; Ensure $15 an hour to Ohio workers; End Gerrymandering; and Inshrine Women's reproductive rights into the Ohio Constitution. I interviewed writers, doctors, musicians, housewives, attorney's, nurses, film makers, teachers, bee keepers, retired fire fighters … People who felt the call to protect their communities, nature, rights - to stand up and fight back, in oh so many ways. Throughout these five years we Won and we Lost. And we got back up, adjusted, shifted and are working to create a better world for everyone and all life on this planet. I want to thank each GrassRoot Ohio guest, who shared your cause, your work and your unique stories with us. Thank You. You challenge and inspire us to do better. I want to thank the production teams at wgrn.org and wcrsfm.org for helping me get started and supporting me all along. I want to thank you, my listeners on air, podcasts and viewers on YouTube. I hope you gained as much insight, courage and gratitude as I have. GrassRoot Ohio is ending in its current form. I'm taking a hiatus. I'm curious to know what the next chapter of my life and work will be. So, It's a wrap my friends- In solidarity for Equality, Sustainability & Justice for All. Thanks for Joining Me. Rising Appalachia has always been a mission-driven, social justice-focused band. On their recent album Folk and Anchor, however, the band decided to take on a more light-hearted project. The sister duo of Leah Song and Chloe Smith went back to their roots and picked out a collection of songs that influenced them -- including some that might surprise you. Leah and I spoke about how the band settled on this project, the songs they chose, and what it means to finally take a break.
I now see just how my wounds, Have been stopping and blocking my light. Whether with myself or someone else, It's time to make it right. ☉ How about that thumbnail? Yup, that is one tenacious dandelion pushing itself up through the crack in the asphalt driveway. Sometimes, like during these times, we need to have the same push as the dandelion and push ourselves through the stops and the blocks to our highest self-expression. Now, that is not to say that the midnight point of any cycle is any worse or less than the 12 o'clock noon high point! There is gold to be had and lessons to be learned in, with, and through all the seasons of the cycle. Right now, as the Moon wanes toward the Sun, preparing to eclipse him totally on Sunday, we are at a point in the cycle of “the darkest hour is just before the dawn.” Time for all the ghosts to come up and out. We have a couple-hour window at the eclipse, which is pretty spooky if you haven't seen one. There is an eerie silence and feeling in the air as the Sun's rays are blocked. As the mantra says, we block our own light from fully shining when we are afraid, and we are afraid because our wounds make us vulnerable. So we can take this time as a blessing that brings us face to face with our fears, vulnerabilities, and failures so they can be integrated fully, enabling us to MOVE ON!! Happy New Moon! In February of 2024, after a year of touring the country, the musical group Rising Appalachia, an ensemble that marries American folk music with a wide array of world influences, made an announcement that might have been surprising only to those who don't know them well. Sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, who created Rising Appalachia over 15 years ago, had decided to take a sabbatical year, though they would honor the concerts already on the books in 2024. Longtime Rising Appalachia fans have been supportive because they know this is a band that has never taken shortcuts in how they manage their artistry and their lives. Since early on in their careers, Leah and Chloe have been advocates for and practitioners of the slow music movement, an ethos of touring and music-making that places sustainability, local engagement and creative control at the heart of their business. The current sabbatical is the latest tool in their slow music toolbox.Yet though last year's tour was hugely successful and they've just released an album titled “Folk and Anchor,” Chloe and Leah's decision was undeniably gutsy and far from conventional in the music industry. In this interview, the sisters, speaking from their homes in the North Carolina mountains, discuss why this was the right time for a yearlong break, how they prepared for it and the ways in which they and their bandmates keep the slow music ethos at the heart of their artistic practice.https://www.risingappalachia.com/tourhttps://www.risingappalachia.com/
Carolyn Harding with Elaine Robertson and Bryn Bird, concerned citizens working to protect their rural communities next to the mega Intel microchip fabrication industrial buildup in New Albany, Ohio. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Talking about show vs tell at the scene level is a little bit harder than talking about it at the paragraph and scene levels. But it's also a tiny bit easier. When you're looking for telling at this level of the story, what you're looking for is a couple of things: A butt ton of backstory. A butt ton of info dumps A lot of flashback. You can have bits of these things in your stories. Where us authors get into trouble is when we have a lot of it and we have a lot of it in telling language. So, that really happens when we do this: Bud Godzilla looked down on his sweet friend turned zombie. They'd been friends forever, so this hurt. Three page description of how they met – info dump or backstory Or: Bud Godzilla looked down on his sweet friend turned zombie. They'd been friends forever, so this hurt. Three page scene of how they met – flashback. You usually want to limit these places and instead sprinkle in action/dialogue/details throughout to help the readers understand that the characters have history or the world exists before the book begins. There's a balance between telling too much and too little. You want the reader to anticipate that something cool is going to happen or has happened, but you don't want to leave them confused or knowing way too much. You know how sometimes you'll be on the plane and the person will not stop talking for six hours about their boil, their aunts' piano obsessions, their dinner plans while you just want to finish watching the inflight movie? That's what happens with those paragraphs of backstory, flashbacks and info dumping. Everything is paused. The stakes are gone. And when that happens? You risk losing your reader completely. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Pogie says keep your eyes on the prize, my friend, and laugh. COOL WRITING EXERCISE TO MAX OUT YOUR SKILLS This comes from the Writing Cooperative and it's really about how to spot your info dump, which is an exercise. "Once you spot an info-dump, ask yourself the following questions: "How much of this information is it essential for the reader to know right now? Most of the information will not be essential. Be ruthless. Cut it out. "Of the information left — if any — how can I get the protagonist to do something which shows or implies the information? This may involve minor or major rewriting, but you do no-one any good by avoiding it. Rework or add scenes which convey the information through present situations and your protagonist's actions. "If the information is necessary, how can I use it to enhance the emotional effect of the scene? Key in on the emotional impact of the scene and if you must retain information that can't be shown or implied, look for ways to add it in a way that will have an emotional impact. ;But the woman you saw can't have been my mom, Angie. Mom died when I was a kid.'" In times of global upheaval, ecological destruction, and societal inequity, justice can seem very far away. Justice in the modern world is often viewed as a contract, an agreement forged between human beings rather than something inherent to the natural world. And yet, for many cultures and traditions, justice is seen as a living presence, as the actual dynamic flow of cause and effect that serves to keep a larger natural balance. Tradition after tradition speaks of the larger law of the cosmos and of the human role in aligning to it. At a time when people are experiencing deep grief and anxiety over the fate of the planet, understanding and reconnecting to a living vision of justice can help provide not only a sense of somatic anchor, but a way forward that asks us to align to something both immediate and ultimate. This vision of living justice asks us to move away from the language of abstract 'justification' towards a more palpable understanding of cause and effect, of excess and repercussion, of balance and flow. Even as it asks us to be awake to the suffering of the world and take action to help remedy its imbalances, it also provokes us to find this living flow within ourselves, to go deep into the roots of cycles of vengeance and retribution in our own hearts. At once a lament over the sorry state of human justice, a cry out to a greater justice, and a deep inquiry into justice as a living force, this episode draws on a range of voices from activists and elders from diverse traditions. Joining for this episode are author and Islamic scholar Dr. Omid Safi, CNN commentator and activist Van Jones, former Tibetan political prisoner Ngawang Sangdrol, author and death row inmate Jarvis Jay Masters, Palestinian-American activist Nadia Irshaid Gilbert, Aboriginal Nyoongar Elder Noel Nannup, and author and Native American activist Jose Barreiro. Featuring original music by Leah Song, Chloe Smith and Duncan Wickel of Rising Appalachia and Sidibe, this episode is meant to be listened to on a good sound system at a time when you can devote your full attention. Carolyn Harding with Judge Terri Jamison, candidate for the Ohio Supreme Court. Judge Terri Jamison began her work history in social work with the West Virginia Department of Welfare. She became a trailblazer when she was one of few women to join the United Mine Workers of America. She moved to Columbus, Ohio when mass layoffs shut the mines down. As a single parent, she worked a variety of jobs before becoming a small business owner for more than 16 years. She became a nontraditional student at Columbus State Community College, ultimately graduating cum laude from Franklin University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She enrolled in Capital University Law School where she obtained her juris doctor degree. As an attorney, she stood beside families in crisis, not corporations, representing them in various courts around Ohio and in U. S. District Court, in administrative hearings, and later being hired to preside over unemployment compensation claims. She comes to this campaign with more than a decade as a judge, having served on the Franklin County Court Domestic Relations and Juvenile Branch, and now on the Court of Appeals, Tenth District. Judge Jamison has often been quoted, “when the law is not on your side, you deserve to be heard, treated with dignity and respect.” Welcome to GrassRoot Ohio. When everyday folk go to the polls, most voters have an idea of who the candidates are, what party they represent, and if they are engaged, they have some idea of the candidates' platforms. But even engaged voters, get a bit overwhelmed when it comes to judges. There are usually many judges on the ballot - and very few opportunities to hear what each candidate hopes to bring to the table. Ohio early voting started Feb 21 and primary election day is March 19, and my hope is that each voter does their own due diligence for all the candidates on their ballot, and this November- All Ohioans will vote for the open seat on the Ohio Supreme Court. www.votejudgejamison.com GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. Carolyn Harding with Jolene Strieter, trans woman, founder & CEO of the non-profit advocacy organization,Trans Humanity. Jolene Strieter (She/Her/Hers/Ladywoman) please share your bio with our listeners. “From my earliest memories, I always knew I was created uniquely and wonderfully different. The hidden secret was... I am a Girl. I grew up with great inner turmoil between two worlds, on one side The Far-Right Evangelical Church led by religious zealots bent on narcissistic control of my life. On the other hand, a hidden life of discovering my True Identity knowing I was different than what society's black and white binary viewpoints had attempted to control my life to be, and I struggled greatly.... Eventually publicly coming out at age 18 I went through the chutes and ladders of life from being alienated by my own family and outcasted as a recluse, institutionalized, abandoned driven to Cleveland Ohio's homeless shelter by my own father, demon exorcised, attending Conversion Therapy in the deep south of the United States and even drugged up, molested and raped. My upbringings became almost an impossible nightmare where I grew up house hopping from partner to partner just to try to find some security unfortunately never having done so and greatly unprepared for life. I was torn between The Religious Control of my Transphobic upbringing and independently setting a new course for my destiny away from the burden of bigotry and regret. So, I purged and detransitioned to promote Conversion Therapy for 5 years as a poster child for detransitioners. Afterwards having stumbled upon undeniable fact which validates Transgender and Gender Variant Identity I re-transitioned at age 33 at the tail end of 2020. Today I advocate because of the undeniable truth I have found and have established Trans Humanity to promote the equality of all genders. I believe we're on the verge of a mass New Renaissance in the transgender world and since Felicity Huffman, Jenner, Jaz and Bono Transgender exposure has gone mainstream this has become a verge of success for so many. I would like to see what the future holds in store for us all.” We first met at the Ohio statehouse on January 24, 2024, the day the Ohio Senate Voted to overrule Governor Mike DeWine's Veto of HB68, which, according to the Ohio Capital Journal, will block gender-affirming care for trans youth and prevent transgender athletes from playing women's sports. Carolyn Harding with Jaelle Terrell, a Ohioan trans writer and humorist who is currently living in Akron with her chosen family. Excerpts from her novel "The Tales of Victoria" can be found at www.statestreetnews.com. On January 24, 2024, the Ohio Senate Voted to overrule Governor Mike DeWine's Veto of HB68, which will, according to the Ohio Capital Journal, "block gender-affirming care for trans youth and prevent transgender athletes from playing women's sports. The bill prohibits transgender youth from starting hormone therapy and puberty blockers…. and Gender-affirming care is supported by every major medical organization in the United States. Children's hospitals across Ohio, the Ohio Children's Hospital Association, and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians all opposed HB 68. No Ohio children's hospital performs gender-affirming surgery on patients under 18 currently." You were there at the Senate Session with your adopted trans daughter and partner. We heard the myopic statements of State Sen. Kristina Roegner, R-Hudson, “There are men and there are women and there are boys and there are girls and they are different…Gender is not fluid. There is no such thing as a gender spectrum....” And they passed HB 68, 24-8. It will go into affect, likely on April 23, 2024. And here you are Jaelle.... talk about your experience that day. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Aliza Hava. I was honored to have the incredibly talented singer songwriter, Aliza Hava (“aLEEza Hah-vuh”) on my show. We talk about music, trauma, healing, life, and the state of our world today. Most importantly, we talk about the role in which music can play in our lives to help heal past trauma and help us connect with each other and God. Ethereal. Enlightening. Medicine for the soul. Aliza Hava interlaces the elements; earth and sky, fire and water. Her transcendent voice is reminiscent of the mystical tone of Stevie Nicks, the raw soul of Janis Joplin, and the gritty wisdom of Brandi Carlile. With her award-winning infusion of folk, rock, pop, and soul, Aliza heals the tiny forgotten bits of ourselves while rekindling our memories, setting our feet on the path back home, and calling us to rise into our best versions of ourselves. Featured on the soundtrack of Sharon Stone's award-winning documentary, Femme: Women Healing the World, which also features performances by Annie Lennox, Yoko Ono, and Rickie Lee Jones, Hava is a recipient of the Human Spirit Award presented by the international organization Talent for Humanity. Her story is featured in their book along with seven other internationally acclaimed artist/activists. The original recording of her song RISE can be heard on Occupy this Album: 99 Songs for the 99% alongside artists such as Ani DiFranco, Jackson Browne, and Warren Haynes. Hava has always sought to relay a message of healing and hope in her music. Seeking solace from a difficult childhood, she turned to music at an early age. Self-taught on a twenty-dollar used guitar, she found inspiration in an old songbook she discovered in her parent's basement, 'Great Songs of the 60s.' Fire-lit, Hava immersed herself in the history of the 60s and early 70s. The music, culture, and activism helped her discover her calling for healing and ignited a drive to write songs that could change the world. While in university studying Music Therapy, Aliza developed a strong inclination towards student activism and discovered a natural gift for concert production and community organizing. She began producing charity concerts featuring local bands for campus organizations like Students for a Free Tibet, and led drum circles in the infamous “Tripping Fields” behind the college where some of the greatest names in music once played, including the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. With her college located just thirty miles from the town of Woodstock, Hava soaked up the culture and spirit that continued to permeate the region many decades later. She collaborated with local musicians, pulled all-nighters with her guitar around campfires, and earned herself the nickname, FireMusicFaerie. After college, Aliza began performing at and co-producing concerts at the United Nations headquarters in NYC. She earned a position as Chair of the UN International Day of Peace NGO Music Committee and went on to produce live concerts on six continents in partnership with over forty civic society, governmental, and environmental organizations. While living part-time in the Middle East, Hava represented UN-related peacebuilding initiatives and worked with Israeli and Palestinian musicians promoting peace and dialogue through music. She went on to produce the internationally live-streamed concert, Harmony in the Holy Land. This extraordinary event united Muslim, Christian, and Jewish musicians in a universal, musical prayer for peace from the heart of Jerusalem. Watching Palestinians and Israelis meet as strangers and part ways as friends, Aliza felt the reaffirmation of her calling to build bridges through the healing power of music. Hava has recently finished recording a new album at the iconic Revolver Recording Studios in Thousand Oaks, CA, produced by multi-platinum, Grammy winner Mikal Blue, who is best known for his work with Colbie Callait, Jason Mraz, and OneRepublic. The album is expected in Spring 2024 and features bassist Dean Dinning of Toad the Wet Sprocket as musical arranger and on bass/keys, and Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, Santana) on drums. Her latest single, When the Children Cry, is a cover of White Lion's soulful ballad, and its message of peace is even more poignant today than it was when originally released in the late 80s. This song resonates through the generations with a message of healing and hope for the children of the world. In addition to writing her own music, Aliza collaborates with artists and songwriters and is a co-writer on Grammy-Award-winning artist Macy Gray's upcoming EP, produced by Mikal Blue. Throughout her journeys, Aliza has shared bills with world-class artists such as Dr. John, Michael Franti, Zac Brown Band, Rising Appalachia, and more. She has performed in the U.S., Canada, India, Morocco, Egypt, Italy, Australia, Jordan, Israel, and South Korea. With an inherent message of peace and universal love, Aliza considers her music and work a form of sacred activism. Her songs embody the power of music to uplift the mind, body, and soul while staying true to the ongoing practice of reclaiming our natural state. Carolyn Harding with visual artist/activist Andrea Bowers and Lauren Leving, curator at Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, or commonly called moCa. On December 21, 2023, Andrea, you posted on Face Book, “A line from the Lake Erie bill of rights will be shining over Lake Erie on the science center across from the rock and roll hall of fame!” with photos and video clip from the installation of your work of Art, which is now hundreds of feet high installed on the Great Lakes Science Center, next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown, Cleveland, Ohio. Congratulations! That's a big and very public work of Art. Let's Talk about this huge Glowing Sign that says “Lake Erie has the Right to Exist, Flourish and Naturally Evolve” in Red, Green, Blue and Yellow Neon. Ohio-raised Andrea Bowers is a Los Angeles-based artist who has been recording and amplifying the work of activists present and past for more than two decades. Her multi-media practice includes drawing, video, sculpture, and installation work that foregrounds the experience of the people who dedicate their time and energy to the struggle for gender, racial, environmental, labor, and immigration justice and those who are directly affected by systemic inequality. Over time, her different bodies of work have become a document of the changing language, prerogatives, and dynamics of social justice movements. In 2021, a major mid-career survey of Bowers's work curated by Michael Darling and Connie Butler opened at the MCA Chicago and traveled to the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in 2022. Other recent solo exhibitions include Grief and Hope, Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, Germany and Light and Gravity, Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, Bremen, Germany. In September 2022, Bowers opened a solo exhibition including both new and existing work at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano as part of an exhibition program organized by the Fondazione Furla. Bowers is represented by Vielmetter Los Angeles, Andrew Kreps Gallery, Kaufmann Repetto, and Jessica Silverman Gallery. Lauren Leving (she/her) is a curator and writer based in Chicago, IL and Cleveland, OH. Her work explores how creative practice can expand institutionally-rooted understandings of access. Currently, she is Curator-at-Large at the Museum of Contemporary Art (moCa) Cleveland; Associate Curator for the Orange County Museum of Art's 2024 California Biennial; and Co-Curator of Everlasting Plastics, originally presented in the U.S. Pavilion during the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. Since joining moCa in 2019, Leving has organized projects including the Getting to Know You residency, which supported the production of Messages to Authorities (Go Away!), a largescale textile commission by Aram Han Sifuentes and Don't mind if I do, a group exhibition stewarded by Finnegan Shannon. She holds an MA in Museum & Exhibition Studies from the University of Illinois–Chicago and a BA from Tulane University. https://www.mocacleveland.org/exhibitions/andrea-bowers-exist-fourish-evolve Celdf.org GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. Carolyn Harding sharing this Sprouts episode from one of GrassRoot Ohio shows featuring Tish O'Dell on State Preemption Laws and Nature's Rights. It was an honor to work with Pacifica Radio to bring this to you. Tish has been a Community Organizer for CELDF (Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund) since 2012 assisting residents to organize rights based initiatives in their communities in order to help them “make real” the just and sustainable communities they envision for the future. CELDF has assisted hundreds of communities across the country to develop “first in the nation” laws banning fracking, factory farming, sludging, water privatization, industrial scale energy development, and others addressing worker's rights, homeless rights, immigrant rights, fair election issues and nature's rights, including the first in the nation law recognizing the rights of a specific ecosystem, the Lake Erie Bill of Rights in 2019. Tish is a founding board member of the Ohio Community Rights Network (OHCRN), organizing and assisting county chapters to build a movement of community rights organizing throughout the state to culminate in constitutional change that will guarantee people's rights to local self-governance and the rights of people and nature over corporations. Tish co-founded the grass-roots organization MADION, Inc (Mothers Against Drilling In Our Neighborhoods) in her hometown of Broadview Heights, Ohio that successfully campaigned to adopt the first Home Rule Charter amendment in Ohio creating a Community Bill of Rights banning new gas drilling, fracking and injection wells in 2012. Tish has also been featured in the documentary We the People 2.0, appeared on the Thom Hartmann Show and The Daily show and is one of the editors of the 2021 book, Death by Democracy: Protecting Water and Life - Frontline stories from Ohioans fighting corporate and state power. celdf.org ohiocrn.org pacificanetwork.org GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. Sisters Leah Song & Chloe Smith grew up in Urban Atlanta, they also lived in New Orleans and outside of Asheville. The pair are deeply rooted in their Southern identity as evidenced in their band, Rising Appalachia. Although their parents are not professional musicians, music was a constant part of the family. Their parents were dedicated students of early Appalachian music. The sisters played music everyday, were classically trained, attended fiddle camps and music festivals among other musical activities. The sisters developed their own taste in Atlanta's 90s rap underground scene. There was a time when the two didn't want anything to do with their parents' music, however, eventually they came back to it and decided to pursue Appalachian music thanks to some time spent away living in Mexico.Aside from music, activism and purpose remain very important to Rising Appalachia. Leah's idea for "The Slow Music Movement" came out of the desire to sustain the troubadour lifestyle over participating in the traditional touring musician industrial complex. While touring, the band requests local food in their rider, invite tabling from non-profits, and work to create relationships with the local community. They also will seek out alternative methods of transportation: trains or smaller vehicles that use non-fossil fuels. Rising Appalachia has been known to do hub shows where they stay for a few days and create relationships with the community. This past July, they hosted Catalyst, their first annual music art and education festival in Asheville. Leah and I dug into how being musicians helped them create a space where artists felt welcome and taken care of. We also talk about Chloe's new baby and how touring might be looking different this fall. Carolyn Harding with Julie Doran, hemp farmer and advocate for cannabis in Ohio. Julie was raised on a small farm in a big family. She's passionate about cannabis, and her focus is to free this plant, and to keep cannabis a clean medicinal option for anyone who wishes to use it. She manufactures an organic fertilizer formulated for cannabis production. She also farms 5 acres of hemp and grows the cbd that she uses in her cbd line, Ohio Friends and Family CBD Products. She enjoys educating people on the benefits of cannabis, how to cultivate it, and what it's uses and possibilities are. You can find her at the statehouse educating legislators on the benefits and uses of cannabis, or hosting summits to educate farmers on how to cultivate a new crop. She loves connecting the dots for businesses, growers, patients, and legislators. She has submerged herself in the industry because of the way the cannabis plant can change a life. When Julie isn't focused on the world of cannabis, she can be found outside in nature, gardening, showing alpacas, and hanging out with friends and family. ohiofriendsandfamily.com GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. This week we revisit a dynamic show featuring two musical acts that are countercultural icons in their own ways and in separate countries. American born sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith and their band Rising Appalachia share their unique brand of "Hillbilly World Music" and chat about how they promote the slow movement in their touring practices. Now exiled in Sweden, Egyptian Ramy Essam travels the eTown to share the songs that led to his becoming the voice of the 2011 Egyptian revolution that overthrew an oppressive leader. Also with us is Joseph Teipel who shares his story about Re:Vision an organization dedicated to building community food independence in the Westwood neighborhood of Denver. That's all this week on eTown! Visit our Youtube Channel to see artist interviews, live recordings, studio sessions, and more! Y'all, for a long time now, I've listened to Rising Appalachia while working my garden, walking the land, and finding my peace out here in the woods. One day, I saw something new coming out of their work: a collaboration of women called Starling Arrow. This wondrous group (featuring Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia, Tina Malia, Ayla Nereo, and Marya Stark) came together during the darkest part of the 2020 pandemic. The result is nothing less than magical. One of these songstresses agreed to come onto the podcast in the middle of her busy schedule—and I couldn't be more honored.Join Marya and myself today on the porch as we chat about the healing, connective power of song and voice. And if you haven't listened to their first album, “Cradle,” stop everything and give yourself the magic that is their lyrical storytelling.Episode Notes:Click HERE for Starling Arrow's websiteClick HERE for Marya Stark's websiteClick HERE for Starling Arrow's YouTube channel
Welcome to a very special episode featuring Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia. We love the soulful tunes from this sister duo and get the feeling that their music resonates with a lot of other folks in the herbal community as well. It was certainly wonderful welcoming Leah and Chloe as our live musical guests for our first virtual Free Herbalism Project (FHP) back in May 2020. After the FHP collaboration, we knew that we wanted to get to know them a little better. Herbal Radio producer, Elise, sits in with Thomas for a lovely conversation with Leah and Chloe. We talk about their upbringing, inspirations, relationship to the herbal community, herbs that support them while on tour and at home, as well as the slow music movement. We hope you enjoy! Rising Appalachia brings to the stage a collection of sounds, stories, and songs steeped in tradition and a devotion to world culture. Intertwining a deep reverence for folk music and a passion for justice, they have made it their life's work to sing songs that speak to something ancient yet surging with relevance. Whether playing at Red Rocks or in rail cars, at Italian street fairs or to Bulgarian herbalists, this fiercely independent band has blazed a unique and colorful path across the globe. 11 years into their movement, Rising Appalachia believes that the roots of all these old songs are vital to our ever evolving soundscape. Michael Ridge has spent the last decade living and traveling nomadically on horseback, mostly in the Pacific Northwest. He is an expert in primitive skills and wild foods, and possesses a level of bravery and commitment to core values that I find extraordinarily impressive. In our conversation, Michael shares about the events that led him to his current life on horseback, and outlines what his day-to-day has looked like, season by season, for the past ten years. We discuss civilization, technology, authenticity, grief, ecology, and community, and Michael outlines the the logistical, psychological, spiritual and emotional tools necessary to live the kind of life he's chosen. This conversation is by far one of my favorite episodes of the podcast, and deserves more than one listen.Find Michael on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube. Here is a short video about Finisia Medrano, Michael's teacher -Songs featured: “And You Don't Even Know You Hurt Me” by Nick Murphy, “Fertile Ground” by Evan Fraser, Vir McCoy, Rising Appalachia, and Chloe Smith, and “Wandering Nomad” by Cody FrancisHow to support the show:* Rate, review and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes* Become a paid subscriber on Substack* Visit my website - AnyaKaats.com & Find me on InstagramA Millennial's Guide to Saving the World is a reader and listener-supported project.
