Carolyn Harding with Judge Terri Jamison, candidate for the Ohio Supreme Court. Judge Terri Jamison began her work history in social work with the West Virginia Department of Welfare. She became a trailblazer when she was one of few women to join the United Mine Workers of America. She moved to Columbus, Ohio when mass layoffs shut the mines down. As a single parent, she worked a variety of jobs before becoming a small business owner for more than 16 years. She became a nontraditional student at Columbus State Community College, ultimately graduating cum laude from Franklin University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She enrolled in Capital University Law School where she obtained her juris doctor degree. As an attorney, she stood beside families in crisis, not corporations, representing them in various courts around Ohio and in U. S. District Court, in administrative hearings, and later being hired to preside over unemployment compensation claims. She comes to this campaign with more than a decade as a judge, having served on the Franklin County Court Domestic Relations and Juvenile Branch, and now on the Court of Appeals, Tenth District. Judge Jamison has often been quoted, “when the law is not on your side, you deserve to be heard, treated with dignity and respect.” Welcome to GrassRoot Ohio. When everyday folk go to the polls, most voters have an idea of who the candidates are, what party they represent, and if they are engaged, they have some idea of the candidates' platforms. But even engaged voters, get a bit overwhelmed when it comes to judges. There are usually many judges on the ballot - and very few opportunities to hear what each candidate hopes to bring to the table. Ohio early voting started Feb 21 and primary election day is March 19, and my hope is that each voter does their own due diligence for all the candidates on their ballot, and this November- All Ohioans will vote for the open seat on the Ohio Supreme Court. www.votejudgejamison.com GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. Carolyn Harding with Jolene Strieter, trans woman, founder & CEO of the non-profit advocacy organization,Trans Humanity. Jolene Strieter (She/Her/Hers/Ladywoman) please share your bio with our listeners. “From my earliest memories, I always knew I was created uniquely and wonderfully different. The hidden secret was... I am a Girl. I grew up with great inner turmoil between two worlds, on one side The Far-Right Evangelical Church led by religious zealots bent on narcissistic control of my life. On the other hand, a hidden life of discovering my True Identity knowing I was different than what society's black and white binary viewpoints had attempted to control my life to be, and I struggled greatly.... Eventually publicly coming out at age 18 I went through the chutes and ladders of life from being alienated by my own family and outcasted as a recluse, institutionalized, abandoned driven to Cleveland Ohio's homeless shelter by my own father, demon exorcised, attending Conversion Therapy in the deep south of the United States and even drugged up, molested and raped. My upbringings became almost an impossible nightmare where I grew up house hopping from partner to partner just to try to find some security unfortunately never having done so and greatly unprepared for life. I was torn between The Religious Control of my Transphobic upbringing and independently setting a new course for my destiny away from the burden of bigotry and regret. So, I purged and detransitioned to promote Conversion Therapy for 5 years as a poster child for detransitioners. Afterwards having stumbled upon undeniable fact which validates Transgender and Gender Variant Identity I re-transitioned at age 33 at the tail end of 2020. Today I advocate because of the undeniable truth I have found and have established Trans Humanity to promote the equality of all genders. I believe we're on the verge of a mass New Renaissance in the transgender world and since Felicity Huffman, Jenner, Jaz and Bono Transgender exposure has gone mainstream this has become a verge of success for so many. I would like to see what the future holds in store for us all.” We first met at the Ohio statehouse on January 24, 2024, the day the Ohio Senate Voted to overrule Governor Mike DeWine's Veto of HB68, which, according to the Ohio Capital Journal, will block gender-affirming care for trans youth and prevent transgender athletes from playing women's sports. Carolyn Harding with Jaelle Terrell, a Ohioan trans writer and humorist who is currently living in Akron with her chosen family. Excerpts from her novel "The Tales of Victoria" can be found at www.statestreetnews.com. On January 24, 2024, the Ohio Senate Voted to overrule Governor Mike DeWine's Veto of HB68, which will, according to the Ohio Capital Journal, "block gender-affirming care for trans youth and prevent transgender athletes from playing women's sports. The bill prohibits transgender youth from starting hormone therapy and puberty blockers…. and Gender-affirming care is supported by every major medical organization in the United States. Children's hospitals across Ohio, the Ohio Children's Hospital Association, and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians all opposed HB 68. No Ohio children's hospital performs gender-affirming surgery on patients under 18 currently." You were there at the Senate Session with your adopted trans daughter and partner. We heard the myopic statements of State Sen. Kristina Roegner, R-Hudson, “There are men and there are women and there are boys and there are girls and they are different…Gender is not fluid. There is no such thing as a gender spectrum....” And they passed HB 68, 24-8. It will go into affect, likely on April 23, 2024. And here you are Jaelle.... talk about your experience that day. Carolyn Harding with visual artist/activist Andrea Bowers and Lauren Leving, curator at Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, or commonly called moCa. On December 21, 2023, Andrea, you posted on Face Book, “A line from the Lake Erie bill of rights will be shining over Lake Erie on the science center across from the rock and roll hall of fame!” with photos and video clip from the installation of your work of Art, which is now hundreds of feet high installed on the Great Lakes Science Center, next to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown, Cleveland, Ohio. Congratulations! That's a big and very public work of Art. Let's Talk about this huge Glowing Sign that says “Lake Erie has the Right to Exist, Flourish and Naturally Evolve” in Red, Green, Blue and Yellow Neon. Ohio-raised Andrea Bowers is a Los Angeles-based artist who has been recording and amplifying the work of activists present and past for more than two decades. Her multi-media practice includes drawing, video, sculpture, and installation work that foregrounds the experience of the people who dedicate their time and energy to the struggle for gender, racial, environmental, labor, and immigration justice and those who are directly affected by systemic inequality. Over time, her different bodies of work have become a document of the changing language, prerogatives, and dynamics of social justice movements. In 2021, a major mid-career survey of Bowers's work curated by Michael Darling and Connie Butler opened at the MCA Chicago and traveled to the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in 2022. Carolyn Harding sharing this Sprouts episode from one of GrassRoot Ohio shows featuring Tish O'Dell on State Preemption Laws and Nature's Rights. It was an honor to work with Pacifica Radio to bring this to you. Tish has been a Community Organizer for CELDF (Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund) since 2012 assisting residents to organize rights based initiatives in their communities in order to help them “make real” the just and sustainable communities they envision for the future. CELDF has assisted hundreds of communities across the country to develop “first in the nation” laws banning fracking, factory farming, sludging, water privatization, industrial scale energy development, and others addressing worker's rights, homeless rights, immigrant rights, fair election issues and nature's rights, including the first in the nation law recognizing the rights of a specific ecosystem, the Lake Erie Bill of Rights in 2019. Tish is a founding board member of the Ohio Community Rights Network (OHCRN), organizing and assisting county chapters to build a movement of community rights organizing throughout the state to culminate in constitutional change that will guarantee people's rights to local self-governance and the rights of people and nature over corporations. Tish co-founded the grass-roots organization MADION, Inc (Mothers Against Drilling In Our Neighborhoods) in her hometown of Broadview Heights, Ohio that successfully campaigned to adopt the first Home Rule Charter amendment in Ohio creating a Community Bill of Rights banning new gas drilling, fracking and injection wells in 2012. Tish has also been featured in the documentary We the People 2.0, appeared on the Thom Hartmann Show and The Daily show and is one of the editors of the 2021 book, Death by Democracy: Protecting Water and Life - Frontline stories from Ohioans fighting corporate and state power. celdf.org ohiocrn.org pacificanetwork.org GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. Carolyn Harding with Julie Doran, hemp farmer and advocate for cannabis in Ohio. Julie was raised on a small farm in a big family. She's passionate about cannabis, and her focus is to free this plant, and to keep cannabis a clean medicinal option for anyone who wishes to use it. She manufactures an organic fertilizer formulated for cannabis production. She also farms 5 acres of hemp and grows the cbd that she uses in her cbd line, Ohio Friends and Family CBD Products. She enjoys educating people on the benefits of cannabis, how to cultivate it, and what it's uses and possibilities are. You can find her at the statehouse educating legislators on the benefits and uses of cannabis, or hosting summits to educate farmers on how to cultivate a new crop. She loves connecting the dots for businesses, growers, patients, and legislators. She has submerged herself in the industry because of the way the cannabis plant can change a life. Carolyn Harding with David DeWitt, editor-in-chief of the Ohio Capital Journal about Ohio Issue 1 - the Single Issue on the August 8, special election Ohio ballot. Ohio Capital Journal Editor-in-Chief and Columnist David DeWitt has been covering government, politics, and policy in Ohio since 2007, including education, health care, crime and courts, poverty, state and local government, business, labor, energy, environment, and social issues. He has worked for the National Journal, The New York Observer, The Athens NEWS, and Plunderbund.com. He holds a bachelor's degree from Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and is a board member of the E.W. Scripps Society of Alumni and Friends. The Ohio Capital Journal covers the Ohio Statehouse, Issues, Politicians, Wins/Losses and Votes since I started reading your daily newsletter. And in my opinion, your articles, editorials and opinion pieces have been pointedly on the side of the People of Ohio. As a professional journalist and news organization, you must have credible sources and facts to back up your assertions, statements, opinions in your articles. Your July 6 commentary entitled, “The historical malfeasance of equating the Ohio Constitution with the U.S. Constitution to attack it - Issue 1 assault on majority rule is a grotesque overthrow of ideals behind America's constitutional republic”, your June 29 commentary, “Ohio government is already captured by radical special interests. State Issue 1 would make it worse” , and your June 8 commentary “Change to 88 counties under State Issue 1 would effectively kill Ohio grassroots amendment proposals”- leads one to surmise you have strong opinions in opposition to Issue 1. So let's look at some of these issues and breakdown for our listeners & viewers- Ohio Issue #1- on the statewide ballot now through August 8, 2023. ohiocapitaljournal.com https://twitter.com/DC_DeWitt GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. I opened my door and listened - it was someone crying/weeping. “Do you need help? Silence. Are you ok? Silence. Are you there? I waited. Nothing. I went back to my couch, my candle and my coffee, and I thought of the people you serve- outside, cold, unsheltered, without support, hot coffee, food, comfort. Carolyn Harding with Pat Marida and Lee Blackburn coordinators of the Ohio Nuclear Free Network. They are highly concerned with the current Ohio HB 434, and we'll learn what it's about and what we can do about it. Pat Marida has been an antinuclear activist since the 1980s, when she was a Board Member of the Ohio Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign. For 25 years she held volunteer positions with the Sierra Club, working on environmental issues and chairing the Ohio Sierra Club Nuclear Free Committee. She is currently a Coordinator with the Ohio Nuclear Free Network. Lee Blackburn is one of the founding members of the Ohio Nuclear Free Network and is currently working to oppose Ohio House Bill 434, a senseless bill that provides no benefits but could saddle the State with billions in losses. He is a former Chief Investment Officer for a major real estate concern that invested some $3 billion in low to moderate income housing under his purview. He became concerned about radioactive materials and its deadly legacy after becoming familiar with the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in southern Ohio where uranium was initially enriched to weapons-grade. Beginning in 1991, until its relegation to Cold Standby in 2001, PORTS, or the A-plant as it's locally known, supplied low-enriched uranium for nuclear reactors. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Senator Sherrod Brown, The Department of Energy was required in 2008 to establish a community-based Site Specific Advisory Board to make recommendations to the Department Of Energy on clean-up efforts at the Site. Mr. Blackburn served as one of the founding members and still attends Board meetings to provide testimony as a private citizen. Ohio HB Bill 434 is relatively short, only 14 pages and YET this Bill is “Massive in Scope” - What's in it, and why you are so concerned? https://onfn.blogspot.com https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/legislation-summary?id=GA134-HB-434 GrassRoot Ohio - Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio. Carolyn Harding with David Harewood and Matina Bliss, organizers with First Collective, working to protect, and ensure homes for, Columbus Houseless residents. David S. Harewood is an Artist, Advocate, and Community Organizer (https://www.davidsharewood.com/). He is a Co-Founder, with FIRST Collective (https://bit.ly/3HBFMHn), Co-Chair of the Columbus Police Accountability Project (https://c-pap.info/), and Executive Committee member of the Columbus Coalition for Rent Control (http://columbusrentcontrol.info/). Matina Bliss serves as the volunteer organizer and treasurer for FIRST Collective. Matina started volunteering with FIRST Collective during the winter months of 2022 while they were operating an overnight warming station and has been a leading organizer for camp operations. She is also a leading organizer for the FIRST Collective's stop the sweeps efforts. Press Release Sunday, August 28, 2022, stated “FIRST COLLECTIVE TO HOLD A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS ON BEHALF OF HOUSELESS CAMP COLUMBUS, OH-- Members of the FIRST Collective will hold demonstrations at the homes of several elected officials this afternoon regarding the forthcoming September eviction of Camp Shameless, located at 897 E Mound Street. Camp Shameless is a houseless encampment established on the near east side of Columbus this past spring. This afternoon we will be holding space at multiple locations demanding the following: 1. Cancel the eviction for 897 E Mound Street. (asks are edited for word count) 2. Move all homelessness matters out of the jurisdiction of the Department of Development and to the Department of Public Health. 3. End the Environmental Remediation Contract associated with encampment sweeps. 4. Create a committee to review and revise practices and policies around homelessness. This committee must be inclusive of mutual aid and community organizations that work with this population, as well as folks currently experiencing homelessness. 5. Make space and funding available for an overnight warming center during cold months. The camp grew from a warming center we created in order to supplement the woeful inadequate resources for warming centers and inhumane conditions in the homeless shelters across the city. Access to buildings that might be used for warming centers from late fall to early spring would greatly increase the well-being of our most vulnerable populations. Carolyn Harding and today I'm talking with Dr. Alice Faryna and Bob Krasen with SPAN Ohio, an organization working for improved Medicare for All in Ohio! Dr. Alice Faryna, M.D. served in private practice in Marion, OHio, at the Neighborhood Health Center; VA hospitals and in Academic medicine at Wright State University. Her last full time job was as medical director for Part B Medicare in Ohio and West Virginia. That is what convinced her that the Medicare program should be expanded to cover all ages, but with improvements to eliminate co-pays and deductibles which can be done at a cost less that our current privatized system. Bob Krasen is a former clergyman in Cleveland; he worked for non-profits in Columbus, including United Cerebral Palsy; American Red Cross Blood Services; and Vision and Vocational Services; until retirement in 2006. He has been involved in SPAN Ohio ever since, and is now Coordinator in Central Ohio, promoting Medicare for All on the National and State levels. I'm turning 65 in November and since last November I've been getting a lot of mail, emails and texts about Medicare. I'm confused, I assumed Medicare was an automatic enrollment, but I'm hearing it's not that easy. I need help. So let's break this down for everyday folks- and for those of us skeptical of the spin and possible booby traps. How does one best sign up for Medicare? Carolyn Harding with Rita Hallaveld and Carissa Roberts, organizers for the DSA, (Democratic Socialists of America) Central Ohio Childcare for All initiative. Rita Hallaveld (she/her) is passionate about community building and organizing with an eye toward addressing the root causes of issues. With a background in social work, she previously worked as a mental health therapist for a decade, first in community based work then in private practice. A single parent of a preschooler, Rita currently dedicates her spare time to organizing with Columbus DSA's Child Care Campaign and volunteers on the board of a summer camp. She is an outdoor enthusiast, with hiking and rock climbing among her favorite activities. Carissa Roberts (she/they) grew up in Upper Arlington and attended The Ohio State University, studying Spanish Linguistics. As a childhood trauma and relationship abuse survivor with chronic mental health issues, she is passionate about pursuing collective solutions to systemic issues that impact our individual lives. Carissa joined the Columbus DSA Child Care Campaign to advance feminist, racial, and economic justice through prioritizing the needs of children, parents, and early childhood educators at a local level here in Central Ohio. Outside of the Child Care Campaign, she is also a dedicated volunteer with the Central Ohio Housing Action Network, helping to connect tenants facing eviction in Franklin County with legal resources. Last week at the Ohio Education Association march, I met Rita and asked her why she was marching. She shared her Childcare for All campaign with me, and I think we all will benefit to learn more about this Need and their campaign's proposed solutions. Carolyn Harding with Sherry Fleming and Susan Catterall, water protectors of the Michindoh Aquifer. According to epa.gov “In 2007, the city of Bryan, Ohio applied to U.S. EPA to designate the Michindoh Aquifer as a "sole-source" aquifer. That designation means the aquifer is the only source of drinking water for people in a nine-county area that includes parts of three states. Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Sherry Fleming is the chairperson for the Williams County Alliance, a grassroots 501c3 citizen group, promoting a sustainable future through education and citizen action. The Alliance has been involved with issues such as factory farms, tire pyrolysis, fracking and water privatization. Sherry graduated from OSU with a degree in animal science production. She and her husband Ted live on a small homestead in Williams County. Sherry also serves on the board of the Ohio Community Rights Network and is coordinator for the Bryan Food Co-op. Susan Kipfer Catterall was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and currently resides in Hamilton, Indiana. She is married with five adult children. Susan is a direct support professional employed by Full Potential, Inc., and she's the DSP of her two adult sons on the autism spectrum. Advocating for her disabled children led her to activism. She is an organizer for United Activist of Fort Wayne. She volunteers at the local animal shelter, Literacy for Companionship, and serves as the treasurer for Feline Fixers. Susan serves as the precinct chair of her township with the democratic party in Steuben County, and is an active member in The Green Party of northeast Indiana. Sherry lives over the aquifer in Indiana, and in 2018 she created the Michindoh Water Warriors FB page after she became aware there was an effort to sell water from the aquifer to the Toledo area. Susan's worked to raise the awareness of the people and electeds in Indiana. https://www.facebook.com/wmscoa/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/726682254348572 GrassRoot Ohio, Conversations with everyday people working on important issues, here in Columbus and all around Ohio.
