Monty Soutar is a respected New Zealand historian who took a big step and turned his life upside down to write a game changing novel. Kāwai For Such A Time As This, is the first instalment in what is to be a three book family saga, which went straight to the top of the bestseller lists in New Zealand and stayed there for 22 weeks. Hi there, I'm your host, Jenny Wheeler. And it's quite likely no one else but Monty has the knowledge and understanding to undertake a book like it, in the tradition of Alex Haley's Roots, introducing readers to pre-European Maori life in much the same way as Alex Haley's tale of tracing his roots back to Africa captivated an international audience. Monty tells the fascinating tale of how he came to write it and explains how all of his life experience seemed to be leading up to this point. A perfect preparation for writing a trilogy, telling a story of nation building through the eyes of its original people. Our Giveaway for this week is Free Historical Fiction for June and Sadie's Vow, my Book #1 in the Home At Last trilogy is included in a good range of other selections. Rev Dr. Hirini Kaa uses his research for his doctoral thesis, and then book, to explore the coming of the Missionaries and the signing of the Treaty from a Maori, and in particular, Ngati Porou viewpoint. The key concept is matauranga - knowledge. Maori had a theological and philisophical framework which made sense of their world. They renegotiated this in light of the new knowledge presented by Pakeha. It was this matauranga that, more than anything, was guaranteeed in the Treaty. It is this matauranga that is finding expression today, and which we need as a nation, to stand along side the Pakeha viewpoint as we find our way in this rapidly changing world. His book - Te Hāhi Mihinare | The Māori Anglican Church by Hirini Kaa can be purchased at good book stores or from https://www.bwb.co.nz/books/hahi-mihinare/

MIA’s Ayurdhi Dhar interviews Diana Kopua about the Mahi a Atua approach, the global mental health movement, and the importance of language and narratives in how we understand our world and ease our suffering. Diana Kopua’s life resembles the stories she uses in her work. From a psychiatric community nurse to the head of the department of psychiatry for Hauora Tairawhiti in Gisborne, New Zealand, her 13-year long, arduous journey is both deeply personal and profoundly political. Kopua says she did this to “become a wedge that kept the door open to allow for indigenous leaders” in her world to change the system. One may call her a storyteller, but a story-gatherer might be more appropriate. As a psychiatrist, Kopua deals in human distress but her interest does not lie in neat psychiatric classifications; instead, she focuses on understanding suffering through Maori creation stories, Purakau. She has developed Mahi a Atua, “an engagement, an assessment, and an intervention” to address the mental distress and suffering among the Maori of New Zealand. Mahi a Atua is not just a set of techniques or a culturally sensitive new therapy, but a drastically different way of conceptualizing the lived experience of the Maori. Recently, along with art and culture expert Mark Kopua and critical psychiatrist Pat Bracken, she published a paper on this approach in Transcultural Psychiatry. Their work can be seen as an alternative to Western pharmaco-therapeutic interventions currently being promoted throughout the global South via the global mental health movement. Researchers have critiqued the exporting of Western psychiatric practices, often citing the famous WHO study that reported better outcomes for people diagnosed with mental disorders in the developing world. As the only Ngati Porou (a Maori nation) psychiatrist in the world, working with a population known for poor mental health outcomes, Kopua’s work offers insight into what can be learned from local, Indigenous, and traditional healing methods. There are many now calling for a “paradigm shift” in Western psychiatry, and in our interview, we covered topics ranging from the specifics of the Mahi a Atua approach, the global mental health movement, and the importance of language and narratives in how we understand our world and ease our suffering. © Mad in America 2019

Business is Boring is a weekly podcast series presented by The Spinoff in association with Callaghan Innovation. Host Simon Pound speaks with innovators and commentators focused on the future of New Zealand, with the interview available as both audio and a transcribed excerpt. Last year a medicinal cannabis producer called Hikurangi Cannabis Company came out of seemingly nowhere and broke the internet, crashing PledgeMe’s servers as it became the fastest local company to crowdfund into the millions - doing 2 million odd in less than ten minutes. But as with most overnight successes it was on the back of years of work. It’s a long journey to change an illegal activity well connected with an area to a legal one. Locals from the Ruatoria area and around Ngati Porou and the East Coast, of which Hikurangi is a significant Maunga to local Iwi, were given first dibs, and invested ahead of the public raise. And the company, that inked deals overseas that could stretch into the hundreds of millions has gained first low THC and very recently higher THC trial and growth rights. And this is while not compromising on trying to create access and jobs for people that have fallen foul of the prohibition laws. While other companies have gone out with a very medical company type branded approach, Hikurangi proudly showed their dreadlocked and rasta hatted workers. This is about honesty, integrity and most importantly actually following through, the 20 plus local jobs and big milestones hit have Hikurangi as a leader in the industry, a founding member of the industry council and a beacon to many companies looking to take a community-led approach to the legal cannabis industry, To talk the journey, where we are and where we go from here, founder CEO Manu Caddie joins us now. When we think of missionary in this context we often, maybe usually think of English men and women bringing the gospel to Maori. But like Paul who had inside knowledge (He grew up in the Greek world and Luke reports he had some knowledge of Greek philosophical thinking) European missionaries in this country had inside help – Maori who either took the gospel home with them when released from slavery up near Kerikeri, or who worked with the misisonaires. Today we will look at two: Ihaia Te Ahu, Missionary and Priest in Te Arawa who we remember on May 13; and Piripi Taumata-a-kura Missionary in Ngati Porou who we remember on May 15.

When active volcanoes are in your backyard how do you prepare for that inevitable eruption? Well, for one thing you stay in communication with GNS Scientists who have been warning of the event for a long time and if you're Tuwharetoa hapu, Ngati Hikairo, you prepare nearby marae and have in place evacuation plans. Justine Murray learns more from Bubs Smith. Celia Lashlie is unapologetically Pakeha and middle class which wouldn't perhaps naturally marry in an advocacy role for Maori populating the lower socio-economic class. Yet, it does and it works because her direct manner and acknowledgment of the privilege associated with being pakeha and middle class means she has a deeper understanding than most of the layers of powerlessness that are so pervasive when you are poor and Maori. Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi is both a pioneer and expert when it comes to te reo Maori. Te Ahi Kaa salutes the Ngati Porou kuia who retired as a Maori Language Commissioner recently with recordings from that poroporaki and an interview with Justine Murray when she received the Te Tohu mo Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu/Te Waka Toi Exemplary Award at the 2008 Nga Taonga Toi a Te Waka Toi (Creative New Zealand Awards).
