"We have spent years seeking information on the assassinations of President Kennedy, Senator Kennedy, Reverend King, and other government secrets without success. It is time to give Americans the answers they deserve."

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 20, 2025 is: inimitable • in-IM-it-uh-bul • adjective Inimitable describes someone or something that is impossible to copy or imitate. // Courtnay delivered the speech in her own inimitable style. See the entry > Examples: “In a nation whose professed ideals include freedom, liberty and independence, every American is charged with an individual self-examination. ... Such a searching self-examination helps us discover our precepts, ethics, ideals, principles, and purpose—a sense of mission. Reverend King discovered his mission as a teenager at Morehouse College. Although the son, grandson and great grandson of ministers, Reverend King initially aspired to be a lawyer. Then he encountered the inimitable Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, President of Morehouse College. ... The rest is history.” — David C. Mills, The (Nashville) Tennessee Tribune, 13 Apr. 2023 Did you know? Something that is inimitable is, literally, not able to be imitated. In actual usage the word describes things so uniquely extraordinary as to not be copied or equaled, which is why you often hear it used to praise outstanding talents or performances (or uniquely talented and incomparable individuals). (The less common antonym imitable describes things that are common or ordinary and could easily be replicated.) Inimitable comes, via Middle English, from the Latin adjective inimitabilis. Be careful not to confuse it with inimical or inimicable, two adjectives meaning “hostile” or “harmful”; those words come from a different Latin root.

For more, visit https://www.wypr.org/show/midday  Tom's guest on this encore edition of Midday is writer and journalist Jonathan Eig, whose latest book is a comprehensive new biography of the slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Eig's book — called, simply, King: A Life — is the first biography of the iconic social activist in more than three decades. Jonathan Eig's book incorporates research material unavailable to previous biographers, including hundreds of pages from the files of a close aide to U.S. President Lyndon Johnson — documents that were first made available only last year. One of the book's revelations is that a widely-circulated quote in which King appears to criticize Black Muslim activist Malcolm X was faked. Eig's research discovered that portions of the published transcript of King's controversial interview for "Playboy" had been completely fabricated. Eig reminds us that Dr. King's career as the public face of the civil rights movement was tragically brief. He was gunned down on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis in 1968, just 13 years after he had burst onto the scene as the leader of the Montgomery bus boycott. The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. is an iconic figure, revered around the world. It's easy to forget that in 1963, when he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the historic March on Washington, nearly 80% of Americans disapproved of the mass gathering, as it was happening. Eig's new biography helps us understand Reverend King, in our time. Jonathan Eig joined Tom in Studio A in May.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

It also shows us what happens when the friends try to alter the future. We discuss the importance of the film to black elementary students, the idolization of historical figures, generational trauma, and much more. On June 12, 1968, a widowed Coretta Scott King stood before Harvard's outgoing senior class in place of her husband, Martin Luther King, Jr. Only months after her husband's assassination and in the midst of a tumultuous year, Scott King urged the young crowd to carry forth MLK's mission, saying "there is reason to hope and to struggle if young people continue to hold high the banner of freedom." Fifty years after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King's speech on that rainy, Cambridge Wednesday, young people remain at the helms of many social and activist movements across the country.
