On March 8, 1964, activist Malcolm X announced his separation from the Nation of Islam (NOI), a religious sector advocating for Black self-determination. This decision came after a disagreement with Elijah Muhammad, the leader of NOI. Despite parting ways with the organization, Malcolm X retained his adherence to Islam and went on to establish the Organization of African Unity, embodying a vision of broader inclusivity and unity among African descendants.  However, his journey was tragically cut short on February 21, 1965, when he was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, just as he was about to deliver an address. His untimely death, at the age of 39, marked a profound loss for the civil rights movement. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

When I first connected with Gregory, Newson, I loved his energy, he reminded me of somebody in my life, and I loved this passion. He's a great storyteller, with a great story to tell. He was born and raised in Harlem, NY, and was sifted through the Elijah Muhammad movement and then through the Black Panther Party, drug addiction, and prison to walk away from God's gift as an artist and painter to wander the desert for 40 years. And then he migrated back to the plantation that his ancestors owned, and that is when he started developing a positive character that would continue to lead him to participate in Civil War reenactments and historical events in the Southland of America.    His website https://newsonpublishing.com

In this Episode talk about the connection between Jesus, Malcolm X, and the Essenes. In his autobiography Malcolm X mentions Jesus being part of an Egyptian Brotherhood called The Essenes . Here is passage for from the autobiography of Malcolm X where he refers to Jesus and the Essenes . I can't remember how, or why, he somehow happened to mention the Dead Sea Scrolls. I came back with something like, "Yes, those scrolls are going to take Jesus off the stained-glass windows and the frescoes where he has been lily-white, and put Him back into the true mainstream of history where Jesus actually was non-white." The reporter was surprised, and I went on that the Dead Sea Scrolls were going to reaffirm that Jesus was a member of that brotherhood of Egyptian seers called the Essene-a fact already known from Philo, the famous Egyptian historian of Jesus' time. And the reporter and I got off on about two good hours of talking in the areas of archaeology, history, and religion. It was so pleasant. I almost forgot the heavy worries on my mind-for that brief respite. I remember we wound up agreeing that by the year 2000, every schoolchild will be taught the true color of great men of antiquity. Time for some high marking Negro filmmaking and we chose the 1992 classic, Malcolm X. The movie that made Denzel a star, Spike Lee an elite level filmmaker and showed how far blacks have came and what still needs to be done not just in America but the whole world. A movie that follows Malcolm's life in several stages. His rebellious youth in Harlem. Doing coke, running numbers, burning his scalp, doing goon shit with his ace boon and sleeping with white women. The Nigga American Dream! This goes to his time in jail and his awakening under the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. From there we see his leadership in the Nation of Islam and his blossoming love with his future wife Betty Shabazz. But like in all biopic's we see his fall or rather people plot against him.(*cough*ThePatriots*cough*) Especially after his second enlightening while on pilgrimage to Mecca. And then ultimately his tragic death being murdered in front if his family. So the real question is how did 3BG get through a movie thats this heavy? Easy! Metal Gear references, redpill jokes and constantly dragging white American culture. But seriously it was a pleasure to review this black movie classic. And Denzel Washington got robbed of an Oscar on this. 10/10

At the end of the show a question from Jim Anderson. Recommendations: Stuart: Beckham With never-before-seen footage, this docuseries follows David Beckham's meteoric rise from humble beginnings to global football stardom. https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81223488 Paddy: Cassius X Exploring the life of Cassius Clay as he undergoes his spiritual transformation as well as examining the evolution of his amazing boxing skills, this landmark film is structured around the early years of his boxing career between 1959 and 1964 when he turned professional and pursued his dream of becoming World Heavyweight Champion. From his first contact with the Nation of Islam to the moment when he is given the name Muhammad Ali, we reveal the events in America that would shape his beliefs and examine the figures such as Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X who would become his spiritual advisors. Featuring interviews with people with a direct connection to these moments in Ali's life, Cassius X: Becoming Ali examines the influences on Ali's awakenings with regard to owning his own identity - the Nation of Islam, integration vs. separation, and the thoughts and perspectives and beliefs he adopts. It is Ali's origin story - the definitive observation of the emergence of a hero https://www.screen.scot/film-in-scotland/made-in-scotland/film/cassius-x-becoming-ali The Thief Collector In 1985, Willem de Kooning's "Woman-Ochre," one of the most valuable paintings of the 20th century, was cut from its frame at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. 32 years later, the painting was found hanging in a New Mexico home. https://www.amazon.co.uk/placeholder_title/dp/B0B8HVPLRH Shona: Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World: Signed Edition (Hardback) What if you woke up one morning and found you'd acquired a double? Someone almost like you, and yet not you at all? When Naomi Klein discovered that a woman who shared her first name, but had radically different, harmful views, was getting chronically mistaken for her, it seemed too ridiculous to take seriously. Then suddenly it wasn't. She started to find herself grappling with a distorted sense of reality, becoming obsessed with reading the threats on social media, the endlessly scrolling insults from the followers of her doppelganger. Why had her shadowy other gone down such an extreme path? Why was identity – all we have to meet the world – so unstable? To find out, Klein decided to follow her double into a bizarre, uncanny mirror world: one of conspiracy theories, anti-vaxxers and demagogue hucksters, where soft-focus wellness influencers make common cause with fire-breathing far right propagandists (all in the name of protecting ‘the children'). In doing so, she lifts the lid on our own culture during this surreal moment in history, as we turn ourselves into polished virtual brands, publicly shame our enemies, watch as deep fakes proliferate and whole nations flip from democracy to something far more sinister. This is a book for our age and for all of us; a deadly serious dark comedy which invites us to view our reflections in the looking glass. It's for anyone who has lost hours down an internet rabbit hole, who wonders why our politics has become so fatally warped, and who wants a way out of our collective vertigo and back to fighting for what really matters. https://www.waterstones.com/book/doppelganger/naomi-klein/2928377214036

Muhammad Ali Quotes on Life, Champions & Boxing (Wisdom Radio) Who was Muhammad Ali? Muhammad Ali, original name Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., (born January 17, 1942, Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.—died June 3, 2016, Scottsdale, Arizona), American professional boxer and social activist. Ali was the first fighter to win the world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions; he successfully defended this title 19 times. Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., grew up in the American South in a time of segregated public facilities. His father, Cassius Marcellus Clay, Sr., supported a wife and two sons by painting billboards and signs. His mother, Odessa Grady Clay, worked as a household domestic. Serena Williams poses with the Daphne Akhurst Trophy after winning the Women's Singles final against Venus Williams of the United States on day 13 of the 2017 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 28, 2017 in Melbourne, Australia. (tennis, sports) When Clay was 12 years old, he took up boxing under the tutelage of Louisville policeman Joe Martin. After advancing through the amateur ranks, he won a gold medal in the 175-pound division at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and began a professional career under the guidance of the Louisville Sponsoring Group, a syndicate composed of 11 wealthy white men. In his early bouts as a professional, Clay was more highly regarded for his charm and personality than for his ring skills. He sought to raise public interest in his fights by reading childlike poetry and spouting self-descriptive phrases such as “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” He told the world that he was “the Greatest,” but the hard realities of boxing seemed to indicate otherwise. Clay infuriated devotees of the sport as much as he impressed them. He held his hands unconventionally low, backed away from punches rather than bobbing and weaving out of danger, and appeared to lack true knockout power. The opponents he was besting were a mixture of veterans who were long past their prime and fighters who had never been more than mediocre. Thus, purists cringed when Clay predicted the round in which he intended to knock out an opponent, and they grimaced when he did so and bragged about each new conquest. On February 25, 1964, Clay challenged Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship of the world. Liston was widely regarded as the most intimidating, powerful fighter of his era. Clay was a decided underdog. But in one of the most stunning upsets in sports history, Liston retired to his corner after six rounds, and Clay became the new champion. Two days later Clay shocked the boxing establishment again by announcing that he had accepted the teachings of the Nation of Islam. On March 6, 1964, he took the name Muhammad Ali, which was given to him by his spiritual mentor, Elijah Muhammad. For the next three years, Ali dominated boxing as thoroughly and magnificently as any fighter ever had. In a May 25, 1965, rematch against Liston, he emerged with a first-round knockout victory. Triumphs over Floyd Patterson, George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper, Brian London, and Karl Mildenberger followed. On November 14, 1966, Ali fought Cleveland Williams. Over the course of three rounds, Ali landed more than 100 punches, scored four knockdowns, and was hit a total of three times. Ali's triumph over Williams was succeeded by victories over Ernie Terrell and Zora Folley. The Zebra Murders were a series of racially motivated attacks and murders committed in San Francisco, California, by some so-called "Death Angels." From October of 1973 to April of 1974, a group of cold-blooded killers truly terrorized the city. Why? Nation of Islam teachings had convinced them that white people, in general, were truly evil "white devils" who needed to be destroyed. They were also taught that it was time for black men and women to violently start ridding the world of these white devils so that a type of heavenly paradise on Earth could be restored. With In and Out of This World: Material and Extraterrestrial Bodies in the Nation of Islam (Duke University Press, 2022), Stephen C. Finley, Inaugural Chair, Department of African and African American Studies at Louisiana State University, examines the religious practices and discourses that have shaped the Nation of Islam (NOI) in America. Drawing on the speeches and writing of figures such as Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, Warith Deen Mohammad, and Louis Farrakhan, Finley shows that the Nation of Islam and its leaders used multiple religious symbols, rituals, and mythologies meant to recast the meaning of the cosmos and create new transcendent and immanent black bodies whose meaning cannot be reduced to products of racism. Whether examining how the myth of Yakub helped Elijah Muhammad explain the violence directed at black bodies, how Malcolm X made black bodies in the Nation of Islam publicly visible, or the ways Farrakhan's discourses on his experiences with the Mother Wheel UFO organize his interpretation of black bodies, Finley demonstrates that the Nation of Islam intended to retrieve, reclaim, and reform black bodies in a context of antiblack violence. In our conversation we discussed the theoretical framework of In- or Out-of-place, the body as both as social and symbolic, Nation of Islam mythological and cosmological narratives , Elijah Muhammad's theological vision for African Americans, Malcolm X' focus on civil and human rights movements, Warith Deen Mohammed's notions of race, the identity of “Bilalians,” Louis Farrakhan's mystical extraterrestrial experiences, and women's embodiment in the Nation of Islam. On Sunday, 31-year old Elijah Muhammad, who was being held at New York City's Rikers Island jail complex, was found dead in his cell. It is the 8th death of an inmate at Rikers Island just this year. Last year, 16 people died while in custody at Rikers. The city's Department of Correction has released a plan for reforming Rikers, but a federal takeover of the facility is still possible later this year. We speak with WNYC and Gothamist reporter Matt Katz about the conditions at the jail complex.
