State of the Arts Episode 186 now available on Spotify! This week I had the privilege of interviewing Eddie Mellow, the vice president of Grillo's Pickles. In 2008, his business partner Travis Grillo, decided to sell pickles made with his grandfather's hundred-year old Grillo family recipe. Using ingredients from his backyard, Travis Grillo began preparing pickles for sale at local markets and events in the Massachusetts/Connecticut area. With dedication Travis and Eddie began securing grocery store accounts in many locations. Sixteen years later, these flavorful pickles can be found in all fifty states. The products of this Cindarella company can now be purchased in 10, 000 stores nationwide. Their merch is even sold by the Urban Outfitters franchise. They collaborate with many different kinds of artists on projects. Grillo's Pickles can be found in pop-ups as well. This interview was conducted at the Rivington Street popup in Manhattan. I am elated to have this inspirational story shared on my podcast!
"That's totally the guy!” Sloane Crosley yelps, coming to an abrupt halt. She gestures at a gray-haired man exiting a graffiti-adorned brick building. For the past 20 minutes, we've been booking it through Manhattan's Chinatown, past bustling produce stands and purse vendors, to find this former synagogue tucked away on a quiet stretch of Rivington Street—a source of inspiration for the author as she wrote her novel, Cult Classic, coming June 7.
Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 206th episode, our guest is Howie Statland. Here is how he describes himself and his store, Rivington Guitars: “This year we are celebrating 23 years of business – 23 years of finding guitar players the guitar of their dreams. Located at 73 E. 4th St., our store is right in the heart of the East Village of Manhattan. We like to keep our prices low and our customers delighted. We buy, sell, trade and repair all vintage guitars, amps, keyboards and more. Our expert repair shop features quick, reasonable prices and reliable service. Since we opened in 1998, Rivington Guitars has come to be known as 'The Best Little Guitar Store in New York City,' and this is a reputation we have earned. Rivington Guitars specializes in vintage guitars, and we know vintage guitars. It's what we do best. We have over 350 vintage guitars in stock at all times -- Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Martin, Rickenbacker, Silvertone and Harmony as well as many other more unusual brands. Owner and proprietor Howie Statland is a featured survey participant for the 'Vintage Guitar Price Guide.' He is one of 25 select guitar dealers throughout the USA who helps determine the values set forth in the 'Vintage Guitar Price Guide.' He has been dealing guitars for over 20 years. A list of some of our satisfied clients include Paul Simon, The Killers, The Strokes, Courtney Love and Hole, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Wilco, The Black Keys, Cults, Green Day, Arcade Fire, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Vampire Weekend, Motley Crue, Jonathan Richman, Mumford & Sons, J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr., the Smashing Pumpkins, Norah Jones, Peter Bjorn and John and many other local New York City working musicians. Our store began in 1998 on Rivington Street, hence our name, and expanded to a larger location on East 4th Street in 2008. We have since opened an acoustic store called Rivington Guitars Unplugged on the same street as our main store. Besides selling fine vintage guitars, we also offer guitar lessons at affordable rates, rental services and appraisal services. Our website is updated daily and all our inventory is on our website. There is always something new at Rivington Guitars, so come in today.” Join The Rob Burgess Show mailing list! Go to tinyletter.com/therobburgessshow and type in your email address. Tony Arcabascio is the Art Director for Nanotronics and oversees all creative design across branding, marketing, and digital platforms. Tony also provides creative input on design for some engineering projects such as nHale™. Tony joined the Nanotronics team with over 25 years of experience in the streetwear and the fashion industry. In 1999, he co-founded the sneaker and apparel company Alife. Its headquarters on Orchard St. and their world renowned sneaker boutique, The Alife Rivington Club, on Rivington Street, served as a hub for a cross-section of the Lower East Side creative scene: artists, photographers, actors, musicians, sneaker-heads, skaters, and graffiti writers. Tony’s legacy of popularizing street wear serves as a perfect example for what Malcolm Gladwell highlighted in his pop-culture book, The Tipping Point, namely that ideas, attitudes and behaviors tend to spread contagiously in the same way as some infectious diseases. Tony is known in the New York arts and culture scene as a prescient brander and behind-the-scenes trend-setter. He has been the creative contributor to many of the brands New Yorker’s know and love today such as The Standard Hotel, WeSC, Damiani, and Buscemi. Today, Arcabascio makes a significant contribution to the Nanotronics ecosystem and culture where artists, designers, engineers, marketers, and business leaders work together to envision, and passionately work toward building, a more sustainable future.
In the 1890's, Aron Streit and his wife, Nettie, left Europe and came to America. In 1916, Aron opened his first matzo factory. There, on Pitt Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Aron and his first partner Rabbi Weinberger made all their matzo by hand. In 1925, Aron and one of his sons opened up a modern bakery on Rivington Street. A few years later, Aron's other son joined the business. With the family working together, the Streit matzo bakery prospered and Aron bought three adjoining buildings to handle the growing business. In 2015, after nearly 100 years making matzo on Manhattan's Lower Eastside, Streit's moved to a new and modern bakery in New York. Technology may have changed but Streit's traditions and dedication to quality have not. We want to ensure we will all be able to enjoy the same great-tasting matzo for centuries to come.Family and religious values are not the only things that have remained constant at Streit's. The matzo bakery is still a family business. Today, Aron's granddaughters and great-grandsons run the company. Streit's is the only family-owned and operated matzo company in America. While others have sold out to large corporations, we at Streit's continue our family tradition of bringing you the best matzo and kosher food products for Passover and year-round.Today I am joined by Aaron Gross (Executive Vice President) and Aron Yagoda (Executive Vice President) both direct descendants of the founders of Streit's Matzo. Both Aaron and Aron take us all on a journey on the ins and outs of creating matzo and all the incredible products that Streit's now offers. EnjoyWith Pesach around the corner, Streit's Matzo is showing up supporting the podcast and I greatly appreciate it. Streit's Matzo is America's last family-owned Mazor Bakery. Unsung Heroes of the Revolution (Pt. 1): The Culper Spy Ring, Nathan Hale, Caleb Brewster, James Rivington, and others...Few people leaving the Banana Republic Store at 66th and 3rd st Manhattan, NY, stop to notice the plaque on the outside wall that mentions the spot less than 100 yards away where courageous young Nathan Hale spoke his famous last words “I regret that have but one life to give for my country’- before being hung from a tree by his British captors. And many probably have no idea how and why those words stirred General Washington’s heart so profoundly when he heard them. And Lady Gaga probably had no idea that her Rivington Street Rebels derived their name from Washington’s greatest spy- James Rivington- or the Beastie Boys, for that matter, when they chose a picture of Manhattan’s Rivington Street for the cover of their album ,Paul’s Boutique. Or the people leaving the Burger King at the intersection of Gregory Ave. and River Dr. in Passaic NJ who drop trash near the forlorn historical marker located on a small concrete pad right there near a utility pole in the parking lot…the sign that just begins to note the incredible accomplishments of a one-time British Lord, William Alexander –better known , and loved, by his Continental Troops as Lord Sterling. Although it says much more, these few words say it all: “American Patriot, Friend of George Washington”. The American Revolution stretched for eight years, from 1775 to 1783, during which time Commander in Chief George Washington had to depend on his network of spies and most trusted soldiers to stay one step ahead of the noose. The AMC series TURN, based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington's Spies", gives a highly fictionalized account of the actions of Washington's greatest spy ring- The Culper Ring. This is the real story of the courageous men and women who risked and sometimes suffered hanging, beginning with Nathan Hale. While Part I focusses mainly on the Culper Spy Ring,, Part Two will provide many rarely told stories about the unsung heroes who risked everything for the cause of liberty, including the slave spy James Armistead Lafayette, Margaret Corbin, Molly Pitcher, Francis Marion , aka The Swamp Fox, and many others. Jerry Cohen’s father opened Economy Candy on Rivington Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side back in 1937, and it remains a paradise for anyone with an appreciation for brightly packaged and affordable confections. In it, one finds shelves overflowing with every candy you can imagine, from Bonomo’s Banana Turkish Taffy to Sifer’s Valomilk. The store also carries seasonal treats, which, at this time of year, means neon-yellow marshmallow Peeps within arm’s reach of packaged Seder mints. On this week’s podcast, Cohen takes unabashed sweet tooth Blake Eskin on a tour of his Passover candy selection. Along the way, they discuss the joys of a non-packaged fruit slice and the future of the candy business and make a brief detour into the forbidden land of chocolate bunnies.
