Z prof. Have you ever wondered why so many school leaders gain weight after transitioning from teaching to administration? This week, I sit down with my dear friend and certified life coach Jena Damiani to unpack what we jokingly call the "admin 30" – those unwanted pounds that seem to appear overnight when you step into a leadership role. As both a school leader and a weight loss coach, she brings a unique perspective to this common but rarely discussed challenge. Join us on this episode as we dive into the five key reasons principals gain weight and why traditional weight loss approaches often fail in the high-stress environment of school leadership. To some, Lent can often seem like an empty ritual. But author of The Good of Giving Up, Aaron Damiani will discuss on Wednesday’s Mornings with Eric and Brigitte what he came to find, and what he describes as something else entirely. Lent has been described as a "springtime for the soul," a season of clearing to make room for growth. Damiani calls this something exceedingly good.

Top shot © Ron Tarver Cowboy lore has deep roots in American culture. Yet, black cowboys have lived pretty much under the radar until recently, when songs by pop culture icons Lil Nas X and Beyoncé went viral and catapulted the black western aesthetic into the limelight. In today's show, we're getting the inside scoop from two photographers who've been fully immersed in these vibrant communities since long before they became a top fashion trend. Separated by a generation in age and with pictures spanning from film to digital, we follow Ron Tarver and Ivan McClellan from their early years in Oklahoma and Kansas, to the urban stables of Northern Philadelphia, the legendary Roy LeBlanc Rodeo in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and beyond. Listen in and discover how the popularity of a single newspaper assignment led Ron to the pages of National Geographic and a career defining body of work. In a similar manner, Ivan's hunch to act on a chance invitation morphed into a passion project that reconnected him to his midwestern roots and ultimately expanded his role from photographer to that of an entrepreneur and rodeo boss. Ever wonder about the funding and stamina required to compete as a rodeo athlete? We take that bull by the horns at the end of the show. Guests: Ron Tarver & Ivan McClellan Episode Timeline: 4:09: Ron Tarver and Ivan McClellan's early memories of cowboy culture during their respective youths in Kansas City and Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. 9:19: Ron's early story for the Philadelphia Inquirer and his subsequent documentation of black cowboy culture. 15:06: The camera gear and film stock Ron used for his pictures, plus digitizing analog slides using a digital camera, macro lens and bellows system. 20:15: Technical limitations Ron faced when shooting film, and his editing process when working with National Geographic. 23:19: Ivan's start as a designer, his introduction to photography and the world of black cowboys, and his shooting process at the rodeo. 33:40: The dominance of women within black rodeos, a female horse whisperer, and tips for photographing horses in a rodeo context. 44:34: Episode Break 45:35: The journey behind our guest's respective books, and Ron's collaboration with a noted editor to create The Long Ride Home. 51:19: The back story to Ivan's book—from a self-published Kickstarter release to the editor he worked with to get Eight Seconds published by Damiani. 57:10: Ivan and Ron discuss each other's finished book projects, questions about model releases, plus the current hunger for black cowboy culture. 1:05:23: Ivan's work to promote black rodeo athletes and the economics of competing in this arena. 1:10:39: How Ivan's life has changed since founding the Eight Seconds rodeo in Portland, Oregon. 1:16:04: The impact of Ivan's work on the lives of rodeo athletes, and the maximum number of bulls a rodeo athlete can ride in a single day. Guest Bios: Ron Tarver was born and raised in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and is now based outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During 32 years as a staffer at The Philadelphia Inquirer, he was nominated for three Pulitzer's and shared the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for public service, in addition to many other accolades. Tarver's photographs have been exhibited internationally. His pictures can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections, and have appeared in major publications both in print and online. In 2004, he co-authored the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, published by Harper Collins, accompanied by a traveling exhibition. A recipient of a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2001 Pew Fellowship in the Arts, Tarver has also received funding from the NEA, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and an Independence Foundation Fellowship. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Art at Swarthmore College. His book, The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America was released by George F Thompson Publishers in September. Ivan McClellan is a photojournalist and designer originally from Kansas City, Missouri. These days he calls Portland, Oregon home. His work reveals marginalized aspects of black culture, challenging broad assumptions and myths about racial identity in America. His project Eight Seconds, focuses on elevating narratives about American Black cowboys, and transforming the culture of the American West by ‘re-centering' black women and men back as an integral part of our historical narrative. After initially self-publishing his photos in book form, Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture was released by Damiani books in April 2024. The winner of the 2022 Getty Inclusion grant, McClellan's photos have been presented in and collected by Museums and cultural spaces across the United States. His work has also been featured in ESPN: The Undefeated and Fast Company. As an experience designer for Adobe Lightroom, he has led projects for Nike, Adidas, Disney, and the U.S. National Soccer Team. And most recently, he founded the Eight Seconds Rodeo in 2023. On a bright sunny day at Gilgo Beach in 1963, a 13 year old Tony Caramonico remembers paddling out and catching the white water as the wave broke behind him. The unparalleled sensation of riding his first wave ushered in a sense of purpose and destiny. Surfing would be his North Star. A lot of people were surfers at the time and life got in the way for many of them. Tony was damn hell sure life would not get in his way. What would follow is a life filled with enough adventure and incredible waves to fill 10 lifetimes. Surfing has been his singular obsession for over 60 years. Tony is a legend among legends. An East Coast Hall of Famer, a 2x Greg Noll Da bull invitational champion, and became a pro surfer when others his age were giving up surfing.Beyond his surfing, Tony kept journals with collages, stories, and scraps for every day for decades. These creations have become a kaleidoscopic chronicle of his search for the perfect wave, from Montauk to Hawaii, South Africa to the Caribbean, and Indonesia to Japan. Eventually Tony transitioned to a respected artist with numerous shows and prints of his work. His latest book by Damiani, 'Montauk Surf Journals' presents a stunning selection of Tony's art representing his 60 years in and around surfing. The book takes readers on Tony's journey through surfing as the world progresses through four decades of immense change. From his first wave in 1963, to living and working with Peter Beard at his home in Montauk, and endless days of perfect waves, Tony's unique, colorful visions shine through on the page.We are incredibly stoked to have Tony on as our guest for this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast. Anyone who remembers New York City's “golden age” of graffiti in the late '70s and early '80s knows about the lion spray-painted on the handball court at Corlears Junior High School, roaring next to metallic blue letters spelling the word “Lee.” In this episode of the Hyperallergic podcast, we speak with its creator, Lee Quiñones, whose paintings of dragons, lions, and Howard the Duck on over 120 MTA train cars were part of the movement that brought light and color to the otherwise dingy, dark, and drastically underfunded subway system. Quiñones's paintings caught the attention of art collectors and gallerists. By the time he was 19, he was showing his work at Galleria La Medusa in Rome, alongside fellow graffiti writer Fred Brathwaite, also known as “Fab 5 Freddy.” Among other writers, the following years would bring his graffiti art to more shows, both at home in New York City and in the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, and even Documenta 7 in 1982 in Kassel, Germany. Quiñones is the rare graffiti writer from this era who maintained a successful career in the gallery space. Today, he continues to experiment through paintings, drawings, and collages in an ever-changing range of styles. His art is in the collections of several major museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art. In this episode, Quiñones reflects on the monster movies that inspired him as a kid, running the tracks as a graffiti-writing teen, making art alongside Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Jenny Holzer in the 1980s East Village scene, and much more. He also discusses the new book documenting his life and work, Lee Quiñones: Fifty Years of New York Graffiti Art and Beyond, which was published by Damiani on April 30. A solo show of his recent work, titled Quinquagenary, will be on display at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles until May 25, 2024. Ambiguity is at the forefront of Richard Kalvar's photography. Richard, who describes context as the “enemy”, seeks mystery and multiple meanings through surprising framing and meticulous timing. He describes his approach as “more like poetry than photojournalism – it attacks on the emotional level.”Richard has done extensive personal, assignment and commercial work in the United States, France, Italy, England, and Japan, among others, has published a number of solo books including Earthlings (Terriens) in 2007 and his most recent title, Selected Writings, published in 2023 by Damiani, and he has had important exhibitions in the US, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. His work has appeared in Geo, The Paris Review, Creative Camera, Aperture, Zoom, Newsweek, and Photo, among many others. Editorial assignments and even commercial work have given Richard an additional opportunity to do personal photography. He did many documentary stories that allowed him to disengage from documentary mode when the occasion arose.Richard joined Magnum Photos as an associate member in 1975, and became a full member two years later. He subsequently served several times as vice president, and once as president of the agency. In episode 221, Richard discusses, among other things:How he ended up settling in ParisHis introduction to photographyHow humour is an intrinsic element of his photographshow he is playing with things he has trouble dealing withWhy he called up Robert DelpireVU agency becoming VivaHow he ended up in MagnumHis favourite cities to shoot inThe legal restrictions on shooting in public in different placesPublic attitudes towards taking photographs of strangers in publicHis new book, Selected WritingsWhy his interest is in single images that stand alone Referenced:Jérôme DucrotAndré KerteszHCBRobert FrankLee FriedlanderElliott ErwittRobert DelpireViva AgencyGuy LeQuerecGilles PeressMary Ellen MarkAlex MajoliJonas BendiksenPaolo PellegrinOlivia ArthurWebsite | Instagram“I'm most interested in having pictures stand alone, and each one is something you can get into and is a story in itself and is also an imaginary story. I'm working with reality, that's what's really interesting to me and it's also what's interesting about photography in general, that you're doing something that looks like real life but obviously isn't. that's the edge I like to work on. Where you have the impression that things are going on and not necessarily going on. If I have to tell a story, I feel a certain moral obligation to respect the truth or respect the feelings of the people that are in it. I think that's a noble thing but for my kind of work it's a break.”
In this episode, Laura is excited to introduce you to Carlo Pignataro, whose uber cool job is to help companies & individuals add a touch of luxury and elegance to their business so they can stay out of price wars and build emotional links with their clients/stakeholders. How's that for a unique approach to executive communication? We kick off by chatting about culture as top luxury brands, like other top companies, focus on retaining top talent. (Hint: no ping pong balls, beer, or even luxurious workspaces needed.) We spend a lot of time connecting the allure of luxury brands - their desirability, their quality, their stories, their courage to accept they're not all things to all people in relationship to leadership and communication. 15+ years of experience in the international luxury industry have taught me that value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. – Carlo Pignataro Grab your Cartier pencil ✏️ and take note of these takeaways and others!
