Continuing with our coverage on Revolutionary War espionage, we focus this week on the spies that George Washington recruited to help him in his efforts to defeat the British. The main circle of spies we know of today was the Culper Ring, a hand picked group that provided key information on British troop movements and battle plans which helped Washington deceive the enemy. We also discuss Agent 355, who probably wasn't a real thing at all but, ya know, it's fun. Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube by searching for Gems of History Podcast. Quick History - The Culper Ring
Hey everyone, we've got a great one for you. So we had a listener reach out after our Don Wildman interview, and she mentioned how great it was to be talking about weird history, etc., and mentioned she too has been studying some strange history, mainly finding out who the supposed "355 Spy" in George Washington's famous "Culper Spy Ring" really is. Out of Washington's 6 spies in the Culper Ring, all have been identified except for one female spy that was in the group. Our guest believes she found out who that person is, and is writing a book to perhaps change history if she is right, and we are hoping she is! Everyone enjoy. We feel like we have finally cracked the code on how to mix in spy television series with our spy movie discussions. It's kind of rare to find spy drama that focuses on pre-WWII tradecraft, but TURN delivers big time. This AMC Original show dramatizes the historical efforts of the Culper Ring in the effort to create a new nation. This is Part One of a Three Episode series on Season One of TURN: Washington's Spies. Here we will discuss the pilot episode. Next week we will discuss episode 6. The final week we will close the discussion with details (including spoilers) of the final episode 10. The season finale is here and we're chatting about Y The Last Man Episode 10 "Victoria". From a family flashback to a new mission for 355 there's lots to discuss before the season, or maybe the series, closes out. Y The Last Man Episode 10 Synopsis and Details Based on the comic series Y The Last Man by: Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra Showrunner: Eliza Clark Teleplay Written by: Eliza Clark Episode Directed by: Daisy von Scherler Mayer Before the event, at a family dinner, Yorick, Beth, Hero, Jennifer and Dean have a fraught meal when Yorick tries to share his new performance with his parents and sister. Failing to get the reaction he expects from Hero, he baits her by revealing she's got a new boyfriend. Making the night even more uncomfortable, Hero reveals that her new partner is already married with a baby on the way but why would her parents be concerned when everyone knows her father is sleeping with his teaching assistant. Jennifer abruptly ends the meal and Yorick angrily sends the drunken Hero home with Sam. In the present day, while awaiting an attack by the Daughters of the Amazon on the town of Marrisville, Hero learns that the government has fallen and the president has been killed in the insurrection. The next day the Amazons begin their attack on the town and they soon realise the former prisoners are ready to defend their home. While the two sides are occupied Yorick, Doctor Mann and Ampersand make their escape and 355 goes to help the former prisoners. But Hero catches up with them, discovering that her brother is alive, and informs Yorick of their mother's death. She allows her sibling to escape but does not follow. As the battle of Marrisville intensifies Nora calls for a surrender on all sides and her group leave with their tails between their legs. Roxanne confronts Nora but she stands up for herself knowing an abuser when she sees one and puts an end to Roxanne's control with a bullet to the head as the rest of the group move to support their new leader “Victoria”! Meanwhile back in Washington Jennifer and Beth gather supplies from the Brown family home and meet up with Sam. Before they can escape the city the Culper ring surrounds the house and takes them into custody. Agent 355 rejoins Yorick and Doctor Mann with a new mission from the Culper Ring. They've been given supplies, a working car and coordinates to return to 355's former handler Fran. The group takes to the road. “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” The last words of Nathan Hale, an American patriot sent to spy on New York by George Washington, but captured by the British and hanged. George Washington was hit hard and resolved never to use amateurs to do his spying for him again. Instead, he set up the United States' first professional spy network - the Culper Ring. They saved the critical fort at West Point, uncovered the treachery of Benedict Arnold, saved the newly arrived French under Rochambeau, the new American economy and George Washington himself. I think, they saved the Revolution, and the new United States with it. Spycraft was seen as a treacherous craft, but it was necessary to win a war. Washington knew this, as his early attempts to gather intelligence on British-occupied New York led to an execution of Nathan Hale, a young school teacher. More sophisticated networks developed, particularly the Culper Spy ring, which involved a farmer, a whaleboat captain, a tavern owner, and a slave.

Happy 4th of July! This week, you’re too busy getting tipsy at your neighbor’s BBQ potluck and lighting off fireworks to care about your retirement, so I’m lightening things up with some non-retirement tips this week. I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I do get addicted to a Netflix show every now and then. And today, in honor of our Independence Day, I’m sharing with you a show I just finished watching a couple months ago on Netflix - Turn: Washington’s Spies. This show first aired in 2014, but the whole series is now on Netflix. Turn is about a farmer from Setauket, New York and his childhood friends. They form an unlikely group of spies called the Culper Ring, which eventually helps to turn the tide during the American Revolutionary War. It’s a really interesting show, based on real people, and it’s worth checking out, even if you aren’t a history buff. And lastly before I send you off on what I hope is a fun-filled day of celebration for you, I want to leave you with this: Without our freedom, we have nothing. Our government, our capitalist economic system, and our country is far from perfect. But we are free. And it takes a conscious and consistent effort to maintain that freedom. So let us all do our part today and every day to protect our freedoms and rights, and fight the misguided socialist ideals that have begun to permeate our culture. An estimated 100 million people died in the 20th century because socialist governments lost sight of the importance of individual freedom. Let us not forget that. Happy Independence Day! That’s it for today. Thanks for listening! Before you continue on with your day, please take a moment to leave a review for the One Minute Retirement Tip in Amazon. If you’re getting any value from these tips, it’s a great way to share the love. And thank you to those of you who have already taken the time to write a review. Unsung Heroes of the Revolution (Pt. 1): The Culper Spy Ring, Nathan Hale, Caleb Brewster, James Rivington, and others...Few people leaving the Banana Republic Store at 66th and 3rd st Manhattan, NY, stop to notice the plaque on the outside wall that mentions the spot less than 100 yards away where courageous young Nathan Hale spoke his famous last words “I regret that have but one life to give for my country’- before being hung from a tree by his British captors. And many probably have no idea how and why those words stirred General Washington’s heart so profoundly when he heard them. And Lady Gaga probably had no idea that her Rivington Street Rebels derived their name from Washington’s greatest spy- James Rivington- or the Beastie Boys, for that matter, when they chose a picture of Manhattan’s Rivington Street for the cover of their album ,Paul’s Boutique. Or the people leaving the Burger King at the intersection of Gregory Ave. and River Dr. in Passaic NJ who drop trash near the forlorn historical marker located on a small concrete pad right there near a utility pole in the parking lot…the sign that just begins to note the incredible accomplishments of a one-time British Lord, William Alexander –better known , and loved, by his Continental Troops as Lord Sterling. Although it says much more, these few words say it all: “American Patriot, Friend of George Washington”. The American Revolution stretched for eight years, from 1775 to 1783, during which time Commander in Chief George Washington had to depend on his network of spies and most trusted soldiers to stay one step ahead of the noose. The AMC series TURN, based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington's Spies", gives a highly fictionalized account of the actions of Washington's greatest spy ring- The Culper Ring. This is the real story of the courageous men and women who risked and sometimes suffered hanging, beginning with Nathan Hale. While Part I focusses mainly on the Culper Spy Ring,, Part Two will provide many rarely told stories about the unsung heroes who risked everything for the cause of liberty, including the slave spy James Armistead Lafayette, Margaret Corbin, Molly Pitcher, Francis Marion , aka The Swamp Fox, and many others. http://blamehamilton.com http://learntruehistory.com Not many Americans know anything about the Culper Ring, the intrepid group of American patriots and spies who helped Washington during his difficult tenure in New York during the War. AMC brought the ring to life in the series Turn. While fun to watch, the show lacks historical accuracy. I discuss the show, the Ring, and several of the historical inaccuracies in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brion-mcclanahan/support

Y: The Last Man gets it very own Ring Cycle with Vol. 5: Ring of Truth, wherein Yorick is separated from his engagement ring while the Culper Ring goes head-to-head with the Setauket Ring. Meanwhile, Paul and Arlo’s year-long Four-Color Flashback “study” of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s acclaimed series runs rings around the competition (not that there is any). The boys discuss everyone’s relative morality; the stand-alone issue “Hero’s Journey,” which allows us to see things from a feminine perspective; whether or not it all comes down to crane spunk and monkey shit; and Christ on a cross. Plus, Paul and Arlo remember Chris Cornell. Next: killer trees are afoot as Wesley “Wezzo” Mead joins the boys once again to discuss Chris Carter’s seminal sci-fi series The X-Files. This time, the gang sets their sights on season 5 and the series’ first big screen outing, Fight the Future.
It's a very special episode as we celebrate our one-year anniversary by welcoming our old friend and former co-host of our old podcast and stand-up show Pat Medaugh to discuss the Culper Ring! Brian and Jen Kolic have also prepared a trivia game where we talk about the most notable revisionist historians-conspiracy theorists! Meanwhile, Zach is writing a D&D themed erotic novel, Pat makes rank in the Navy, and Brian gets giggly. Thanks for all your support, and here's to growing the show in the next year
