After World War II, book publishers and film makers worked to identify American heroes that they could promote to the world.  Frequently these heroes were self-made men who used specialized knowledge or skills to defeat an overwhelming enemy.  One such character was Francis Marion, a South Carolina plantation owner who utlized his knowledge of the countryside to prey upon British garrisons and foraging parties. We talk with John Oller, author of The Swamp Fox: How Francis Marion Saved the American Revolution. Tell us what you think! Florida's role in the War Between the States is easily and often overlooked. She was third behind South Carolina and Mississippi to secede from the Union. While the battles fought on her soil never rose to the level of those farther north in the main theater of war, Florida's supply and defensive roles were critical to the Southern cause. As easily as these facts are forgotten, so too can brave and honorable men be forgotten if we allow them to be. One such man is Captain John Jackson Dickison, the Swamp Fox of the Confederacy. Chad Bond is awesome. He recently won the Swamp Fox 100, smashing the previous course record by more than 6 hours. After taking 4.5 years off of the 100 mile distance, Chad made an epic return at Swamp Fox, and the hard work he put in paid off.

Dan Auerbach, the Black Keys frontman, had always been a big fan of the late Tony Joe White. The singer-songwriter—some knew him as “The Swamp Fox” had an unmistakably swampy baritone and down-home style. He was best known, of course, for songs like “Poke Salad Annie” and “Rainy Night in Georgia.” Over his career, White's songs were recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles and Tina Turner, among others. In 2018, White passed away after suffering a heart attack in Tennessee. Afterward, his son and manager Jody White unearthed boxes of reel-to-reel tapes filled with hundreds of demos that no one had ever heard. It was a treasure trove of classic Tony Joe White material just sitting in storage. So Jody sent an email to Auerbach with one of the tracks, as for years the two had spoken about a collaboration.   What has come of that has been a terrific collection of new Tony Joe White music with more to come and Jody White recently joined us on the Load Out Music Podcast to talk about his father, the legacy of the Swamp Fox, and what's coming next.

Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Elizabeth Crook, author of the novel THE MADSTONE.  Set during Reconstruction in Texas in 1868, THE MADSTONE is an adventure story of a young frontiersman who helps a pregnant young mother and her child flee across Texas from outlaws bent on revenge. The outlaws are based on the historically true Swamp Fox gang which terrorized and killed blacks, and agents of the Freedmen's Bureau, a federal agency which provided relief and helped formerly enslaved people become self-sufficient.  In the interview we discussed Crook's commitment to tell the whole truth about Texas history in her storytelling. Brigadier General Francis Marion (c. 1732 – February 27, 1795), also known as the "Swamp Fox", was an American military officer, planter, and politician who served during the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. During the American Revolution, Marion supported the Patriot cause and enlisted in the Continental Army, fighting against British forces in the Southern theater of the American Revolutionary War from 1780 to 1781. Though he never commanded a field army or served as a commander in a major engagement, Marion's use of irregular warfare against the British has led him to be considered one of the fathers of guerrilla and maneuver warfare, and his tactics form a part of the modern-day military doctrine of the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment.[1][2]

The explosion at BASF's Germany plant near Frankfurt shut down the four square mile complex Monday that makes raw chemicals for BASF products. BASF is the world's largest chemical company and says the facility is likely to face a prolonged shutdown. The complex is home to some 39,000 BASF employees. An extended shutdown may tighten earnings for BASF and benefit Dow Chemical, according to Bloomberg. There's no word yet on how the shutdown might impact the production of BASF's agriculture chemicals. BASF never joined the merger and acquisition trend within the agriculture chemical industry but did reportedly enter talks with Monsanto to sell-off BASF's agriculture-solutions unit.
