The tomato gets no respect. Never has. Lost in the dustbin of history for centuries, accused of being vile and poisonous, subjected to being picked hard-green and gassed, even used as a projectile, the poor tomato has become the avatar for our disaffection with industrial foods — while becoming the most popular vegetable in America (and, in fact, the world). Each summer, tomato festivals crop up across the country; the Heinz ketchup bottle, instantly recognizable, has earned a spot in the Smithsonian; and now the tomato is redefining the very nature of farming, moving from fields into climate-controlled mega-greenhouses the size of New England villages.  About the author William Alexander is the author of the national bestseller, "The $64 Tomato," as well as "52 Loaves: A Half-Baked Adventure," his hilarious and moving account of a year spent striving to bake the perfect loaf of bread; "Flirting With French," about his often riotous attempt to fulfill a life-dream of learning French, and most recently, "Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World," a whirlwind tour of the history of the humble tomato. The New York Times Style Magazine says about Alexander, "His timing and his delivery are flawless," while Counterpunch has called him "one of the funniest writers in America." He has appeared on NPR's Morning (and Weekend) Edition, at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC, and was a 2006 Quill Book Awards finalist. Alexander has also contributed over a dozen essays to the New York Times opinion pages, where he has opined on such issues as the Christmas tree threatening his living room, Martha Stewart, and the difficulties of being organic. Before turning to writing full-time, Bill spent 37 years as a director of information technology at a psychiatric research institution, persisting in the belief that he is a researcher, not a researchee. Even with a broad interest in practice ownership, giant student debt is negatively influencing future practice ownership. This was the summarized conclusion from a recent cross-sectional study in the AAPD journal evaluating practice ownership intentions and educational debt. On today's solo episode, I wanted to do a quick review of this article and share my thoughts. I receive inquiries several times a week from young pediatric dentists who express interest in starting a practice. I can tell you first hand that there is a lot of interest in the subject. Some dentists commit and make it happen right away, and for others it takes more time due to additional barriers. Even with the stresses of running a business, I still encourage practice ownership and I think this article does a great job shedding some light on restrictions that come with it. Shoutout to Dr. William Alexander, Dr. Joel Berg, Dr. JoAnna Scott, Dr. Roger Sanger, and Dr. Zheng Xu on publishing this study. The study is title, "Practice Ownership Intentions of Pediatric Dentistry Residents and the Influence of Educational Debt." Pediatric Dentistry V 44, No 1. Jan/Feb 2022.

Why does the world of young adult fiction seem to have more wizards, werewolves, and vampires in it than astronauts and engineers? And why have the writers of the blockbuster YA books of the last 20 years fixated so consistently on white, straight, cisgender protagonists while always somehow forgetting to portray the true diversity of young people's backgrounds, identities, orientations, and experiences?Well, you could write a whole dissertation about those questions. But instead, my friend and colleague A. R. Capetta and I went out and assembled a counterweight. It's a YA science fiction collection called Tasting Light: Ten Science Fiction Stories to Rewire Your Perceptions, and after more than two years of work, it comes out today—October 11, 2022.Tasting Light highlights the plausible futures of science fiction rather than the enticing-but-impossible worlds of fantasy. Don't get me wrong: I love both kinds of stories. But fantasy doesn't need any extra help these days—just turn on your favorite streaming TV network and you'll see show after show featuring dragons, magic, and swordplay. There's some great science fiction out there too (The Expanse, For All Mankind, the never-ending Star Trek universe), but it isn't nearly as pervasive. The two genres do different kinds of work, and I think Hollywood and the mainstream publishing world have been focusing so hard on one that the other has been getting edged out. That's too bad, because to me, fantasy is the literature of escape, longing, and lost worlds, while science fiction is the literature of hope and possibility. And hope is something we need more of these days.As a project, Tasting Light was born at Candlewick Press, a prominent publisher of YA and middle-grade books based here in the Boston area. Candlewick had formed a pair of collaborations with the MIT Press called MITeen Press and MIT Kids Press, and they were looking for someone to put together a YA-oriented science fiction collection under the MITeen Press imprint—a book that would do for the YA market what the MIT Press and MIT Technology Review's Twelve Tomorrows books (one of which I edited in 2018) was doing for mainstream sci-fi. Namely, prove that it's stil possible to create technically realistic “hard” science fiction in the style of Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, or Robert Heinlein from the 1950s and 1960s, but do it in a way that speaks to readers now in the 2020s. (For more on the Twelve Tomorrows vision listen to my 2018 episode Science Fiction That Takes Science Seriously.)At the same time, though, MITeen Press wanted to open up space for stories that reflect a wider range of human experiences and perspectives. So they recruited A. R. and me to edit, and we went out and recruited the smartest, most accomplished, most diverse set of authors we could find to write hard sci-fi stories with heroes who would be recognizable and relatable to young adults today. As you'll hear in today's episode, that includes William Alexander, whose story “On the Tip of My Tongue” follows two young people of unspecified gender as they attempt to tame the loopy orbital mechanics of a space station suspended at the L1 LaGrange point. It includes the Chicago-based thriller and sci-fi writer K. Ancrum, who wrote a lovely story called “Walk 153” about a the complex relationship that develops between a lonely, infirm, elderly woman and the college student who helps her experience the outside world through his GoPro-like body camera. And it includes the prolific Elizabeth Bear, who wrote a story called “Twin Strangers” that tackles the issues of body dysmorphic disorder and anorexia through a story about two teenage boys and their misadventures programming their “dops” or metaverse avatars. There's also a luminous story by A. R. themself called “Extremophiles,” set amidst the ice of distant Europa. And there are five more remarkable stories by Charlotte Nicole Davis, Nasuġraq Rainey Hopson, A.S. King, E.C. Myers, and Junauda Petrus-Nasah, as well as a gorgeous comic / graphic novella by Wendy Xu about a sentient robot and the teen girl who discovers it in the forest. The reviews of Tasting Light have been wondrous and welcome. Kirkus Reviews gives it a rare starred review and says “Capetta and Roush introduce engaging, thoughtful, beautifully written entries about identity and agency, all unfolding within the bounds of real science.” Publishers Weekly calls it “dazzling” and notes that “the creators seamlessly tackle relevant issues such as colonization, misogyny, transphobia, and white entitlement in this eclectic celebration of infinite possibility and the ever-present human spirit.” Buzzfeed says “Each story is unique, brilliant, and brimming with hope.”I hope the three excerpts you'll hear in today's episode will entice you to get a copy of Tasting Light for yourself; it's available at Amazon and everywhere you buy books. Or if you decide to become a new supporter of Soonish on Patreon at the $10-per-episode level or above, between now and December 31, 2022, I'll send you a free signed copy of the book! For more about this episode, including a full transcript, please visit http://www.soonishpodcast.org/soonish-509-tasting-light

To dig into the fascinating history of tomatoes, from their origins to recent developments, my guest this week is William Alexander, the author of “Ten Tomatoes that Changed the World.”

It was the result of two years of interviews and research into the history, folklore and paranormal activity of Nantucket Island. Now, with the advent of E-Books, author WB Alexander has added new stories to his book, changing the original 22 true ghost tales into 33 ghost stories and an essay written for an online magazine about ghosts. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson of Salem County, New Jersey Joseph T. Buckingham, editor of the Boston Courier in the 1830s, had a way with invective: The mere fungus of an offensive plant which one cannot touch without an immediate application of soap and water with an infusion of eau de cologne, to sweeten the hand…O ye caterers of luxuries, ye gods and godesses of the science of cookery! Deliver us from tomatoes. You have to wonder what Buckingham said about politicians. Everything has a history, and that includes tomatoes. For when Buckingham wrote his anti-tomato diatribe, not very coincidentally the United States was in the midst of tomato-eating health craze that included (for some) the consumption of life-enhancing tomato pills; while in that very year, Italians persisted in eating pasta that had been cooked in broth for as much as hour before being tossed with pork lard and eaten by hand. These and other excellent facts are found in William Alexander's Ten Tomatoes That Changed the World: A History. His previous books include The $64 Tomato: How One Man Nearly Lost His Sanity, Spent a Fortune, and Endured an Existential Crisis in the Quest for the Perfect Garden. For Further Investigation If you haven't already listened to it, find out more about Dr. Wiley and his crusade for pure food in my conversation with Jonathan Reese; for a discussion that busted lots of myths regarding food, and how we came to eat things the way we do, see the conversation with Rachael Laudan Bill Alexander's website The Tomato Pill Craze New York Times article on the GMO tomato Andrew Smith, Pure Ketchup: A History of America's National Condiment, with Recipes Massimo Mortinari, A Short History of Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce: The Unbelievable True Story of the World's Most Beloved Dish

Happy Reading Everyone Today's Library Tidbit comes to us from the Sarah the adult programming librarian and is all about learning to paint, specifically painting along with Bob Ross and the Joy of Painting. Bob Ross was born in 1942 in Daytona Florida. He joined the Air Force in 1960. While he was stationed in Alaska he took a USO painting lesson and the painting bug bit hard. When he left the Air Force Bob moved back to Florida and was introduced to the wet-on-wet painting technique through a class by William Alexander. William Alexander was a German painter who's The Magic of Oil Painting ran on PBS from 1974-1982. William Alexander created the specific style of wet-on-wet that made Bob Ross famous and as Bob Ross became more famous his relationship with William Alexander became more strained. William Alexander believing that Bob Ross betrayed him by copying the technique. He also claimed that Bob Ross had borrowed some of the verbal patter that we all recognize today. The wet-on-wet technique that both painters use is a modern take on an old technique that's also called alla prima. This is a technique that requires fast oil painting as the entire painting needs to be finished before the first layer of oil paint dries. Painting alla prima means adding layers of oil paints on top of each other. This style of painting allows for the ability to create fast oil paintings as you do not have to wait for the previous layer to dry. It also allows for some mixing of colors on the canvas. Bob Ross tweaked the wet-on-wet technique by adding a layer of thinned white paint across the entire canvas before starting on the painting. This primes the canvas for quicker alla prima painting. Priming the canvas in this way would allow Ross or Alexander to paint a landscape within the 30 minute run time of their shows. Bob Ross was passionate about sharing his love of painting. He started The Joy of Painting on public television in 1982. To promote the show Ross would tour the country doing live classes at shopping malls and art stores. As the popularity of the show grew so did the audiences at the classes. Most of Ross's success and appeal was persona, almost everything people love about Ross was a carefully put together persona. This is not to say that he was not being genuine, but that Ross wanted to make sure that his show was accessibly, enjoyable, and timeless. He specifically chose to wear jeans and button-down shirt because he believed that it would be a timeless look for future viewings of the show. Ross also consciously spoke as if he had only one viewer so that that everyone watching felt that he was teaching just them. The biggest appeal of Bob Ross for people was his calm and smooth voice. It is often joked that Bob Ross started painting ASMR. ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response and is a tingling sensation, typically from the scalp down the back, that is triggered by some people due to specific stimuli. Not everyone experiences ASMR, but a popular genre of ASMR videos include brush strokes and soft calming whispering. Both of which are key facets of The Joy of Painting. Bob Ross was also unrelentingly positive. Something that is best shown in quotes,

William Alexander Cosmetics was founded with the vision to revolutionise the stigma within the male cosmetics industry. Their tanning products are especially designed for men and their mission is to create a brand with products of the highest quality, and to give men confidence and trust in using them. The brand's luxury tan enhancer has been formulated to create a perfectly balanced blend, illuminating a subtle, natural looking tan.  William Alexander Cosmetics is a new brand which launched at the end of February this year, founded by two best friends, Alec and Themy, who came up with the idea during the first lockdown. Both were struggling to find a product that gave them a natural holiday glow rather than the orange shade that usually comes with tanning products. They're set to launch with two products, one being a tan enhancing mousse and one a tanning water. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Alec and Themy, Co-Founders of William Alexander Cosmetics about the story of how two good friends launched a male beauty brand. At the start of lockdown in 2020 they decided to use their spare time to research the tanning industry with the desire to make their own beauty products aimed at men.  Our host Peter Brooker and the co-founders also talk about the increasing adopting of men's tanning, working with manufacturers, why it's important to get the product right before going to market, using social media for brand awareness, and why packaging matters.  Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here. Industrialization, and the semi-dwarf wheat developed during the Green Revolution, created a disconnect between farming and flour. But now, consumers are rejecting these commodities and rediscovering the foods, flavors, and farmers around us. This episode is about the growing movement to bring back heritage grains and strengthen local and regional food systems. In direct opposition of the Green Revolution, we’re going to the front lines of the “Grain Revolution." We'll hear from author William Alexander, baker Ellen King of Hewn, Henry Blair of the Greenmarket Regional Grains Project, "The Grain Lady" Mona Esposito, miller Jennifer Lapidus of Carolina Ground, and, of course, co-authors of "Modernist Bread," Nathan Myhrvold and Francsico Migoya. In 1940, while he was struggling as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Walker Percy wrote to his uncle and adopted father, William Alexander Percy, to give him the bad news about his grades. William Alexander, who introduced his young ward to the writings of Marcus Aurelius and had himself gone to Harvard, did not care for one second about the grades. As he wrote back to Walker, “My whole theory about life is that glory and accomplishment are of far less importance than the creation of character and the individual good life.” How lucky we might have been to get such a lesson from our own parents at that impressionable age! To hear, emphatically, that marks on a report card are not a reflection of who we are and that their recognition is such a hollow thing. Because it’s clear that most of us internalized the exact opposite: We think that fame and fortune are the marks of a good person. We connect them, like cause and effect. If/then statements in the logic of human existence. We chase these things, because like grades, they are quantifiable and easy to game. But character? The trait the Stoics believed was like fate, the determining factor in life? Well, that we mostly ignore. We assume it will take care of itself. It won’t. If we directed half the time we spend trying to advance our careers or ace a test, toward our individual moral improvement, the world would be transformed. And so would our individual lives--good lives.

And many probably have no idea how and why those words stirred General Washington’s heart so profoundly when he heard them. And Lady Gaga probably had no idea that her Rivington Street Rebels derived their name from Washington’s greatest spy- James Rivington- or the Beastie Boys, for that matter, when they chose a picture of Manhattan’s Rivington Street for the cover of their album ,Paul’s Boutique. Or the people leaving the Burger King at the intersection of Gregory Ave. and River Dr. in Passaic NJ who drop trash near the forlorn historical marker located on a small concrete pad right there near a utility pole in the parking lot…the sign that just begins to note the incredible accomplishments of a one-time British Lord, William Alexander –better known , and loved, by his Continental Troops as Lord Sterling. Although it says much more, these few words say it all: “American Patriot, Friend of George Washington”. The American Revolution stretched for eight years, from 1775 to 1783, during which time Commander in Chief George Washington had to depend on his network of spies and most trusted soldiers to stay one step ahead of the noose. The AMC series TURN, based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington's Spies", gives a highly fictionalized account of the actions of Washington's greatest spy ring- The Culper Ring. This is the real story of the courageous men and women who risked and sometimes suffered hanging, beginning with Nathan Hale. It's the ultimate REFRESH button." —Elizabeth Gilbert With 2018 just two weeks away, I am, as I am with each new years, inclined to be quite excited for a fresh start. No matter what the current year shared with me, surprised or delighted me with, the gift of a chance to improve is a priceless opportunity that only arrives once every 365 days. And so, I readily choose to seize it and apply what I have learned over the past 12 months and put it to practice, to improve upon who I reveal myself to be the previous year. As I look ahead to the new year with plans to finally get back to France since far too long ago (2013), I couldn't help but look to my collection of French living and culture books which I didn't fully realized is as plentiful as it turned out to be in my personal library (a sampling captured recently of many of my French themed books) for inspiration as to how to step forward into 2018. Below I've gathered 18 quotes of wisdom, insights and inspiration for beginning anew, renewed and brilliantly rested and ready to make 2018 the year we wish it to be. You Know More Than You Realize 1."a quarter to a third of all English words come from French, and good thing; otherwise, learning this language would be even harder than it is." —William Alexander in Flirting with French: How a Language Charmed Me, Seduced Me & Nearly Broke My Heart   Read Books Like You Need Them to Breathe 2. "France retains a reverence for the printed book. As independent bookstores crash and burn in the United States, the market here is healthier, largely thanks to government protections that treat the stores as national treasures . . . in France, booksellers —including Amazon —may not discount books more than 5 percent below the publisher's list price." —Elaine Sciolino in The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs   The Gift of a Balanced Life is a Beautiful Life to Savor 3. "So here is a trilogy: food/movement/know thyself. Again, these are important elements in my life and also in the lives of French women who don't get fat (and perhaps do not want or need facelifts)." —Mireille Guiliano in French Women Don't Get Facelifts: The Secret of Aging with Style & Attitude    Trust Your Journey, and As You Travel, Just Be Yourself 4. "'Seize the moment . . . pay attention to your life right now' . . . What I failed to see, sitting around the coffee table on those nights, was the possibility that I didn't have to keep looking for a family to belong to; I could create one of my own. I had conflated my deep need to belong to something bigger than myself with a more superficial need to fit in, to look and dress and act like others. But fitting in is not belonging. This seems so clear now, but at the time I didn't understand the difference. I was still floating between New York and Paris, at least in the sense that my identity was tied to both cities. I lived in New York and worked at a New Yorker's pace, but I couldn't let go of Paris —Paris, which had shaped me more deeply than college or even my Manhattan childhood. Returning to Paris felt as if I was reawakening some part of myself that had been asleep since I'd left." —Kate Betts in My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine   On Style: Mix It Up 5. "Forget the 'total look.' Frenchwomen love to mix and match. Pascale Camart, womenswear buying manager for the Galeries Lafayette, told me that having designer labels next to ordinary ones on the same floor was 'on purpose. The Frenchwoman likes to put different things together.' The Parisienne, she says, doesn't buy evening dresses. She sticks with basics and then finds the one distinctive jacket or scarf or top that will make the ensemble a knockout." —Harriet Welty Rochefort in Joie de Vivre: Secrets of Wining, Dining and Romancing Like the French   The Importance of Elevating the Everyday 6. " You don't go overboard, exhausting yourself over the holidays when you make every day an occasion for friendship and family, fun and celebration." —Jamie Cat Callan in Bonjour, Happiness: Secrets to Finding Your Joie de Vivre   Choose Quality in Your Food and in Your Life to Elevate the Experience 7. "Édith Piaf famously sang, Non, je ne regrette rien ('No, I regret nothing'). Although I have my share of regrets, using good chocolate to make a soufflé is never one of them." —David Lebovitz in L'Appart: The Delights and Disasters of Making My Paris Home   Let Your Body Tell You What It Needs and Listen 8. "She knows exactly what she has 'a taste' for, and once she's had enough, that's it. She eats what she wants, when she wants it, until she is satisfied. Food is not a moral or emotional issue for her. She does not describe foods as good or bad; to her they are neutral, just food." —Carol Cottrill in The French Twist: Twelve Secrets of Decadent Dining and Natural Weight Management   The Essence of Real Beauty Goes Beyond the Surface 9. "Style without substance is unacceptable, largely because it's boring, one-dimensional. In France, it's inadmissible to provoke ennui. Real style is built upon a solid foundation of informed intelligence, quick wit, and an impressive panopoly of culture references. One must hold her own in a lively conversation. The essence of beauty is to continue educating oneself and constantly to learn something new. Simply put: these are the keys to eternal youth." Tish Jett in Forever Chic: Frenchwomen's Secrets for Timeless Beauty, Style and Substance   Keep Persevering to Create More 'Luck' in Your Life 10. "Persevering is often not simply a matter of working hard and refusing to quit; often, by trying again, failing again, and failing better, we inadvertently place ourselves in the way of luck. Yet another reason to keep on keeping on." —Karen Karbo in Julia Child Rules: Lessons on Savoring Life   Cooking Need Not Be Complicated & Thus an Necessary Element of Socializing Well in Everyday Life 11. "Yes, Parisians have more fun when they go out. But they're also ten times less likely to eat out. And in Paris, there's no ordering in —you cook. It's simple cooking, really: You can have five friends over, create a fast, delicious pasta with zucchini and mint. Or you just buy cheese, figs, wine and call it a night." — Garance Doré in Love, Style, Life   Opening Your World to Other Languages & Cultures Deepens Appreciation and Perspective 12. "Linguists call America 'the graveyard of languages' because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and extinguish their native languages in a few generations. A study of thirty-five nations found that 'in no other country . . . did the rate of the mother tongue shift toward (English) monolingualism approach the radity of that found in the United States.' Immigrants to America lose languages quickly; natives of America fail to acquire them. Only 18 percent of American schoolchildren are enrolled in foreign language courses, while 94 percent of European high-school students are studying English." —Lauren Collins in When in French: Love in a Second Language   Incorporate the Arts into Your Life 13. "As often as you can, take an evening off and seek out the arts. Attend the ballet, visit an art show at your local coffee shop, go see an independent theatre, attend a symphony performance or a rock concern. These moments are often too few and far between, especially when family and work life seem to always come first. Indulging in the pleasure of the arts feels decadent and is a magnificent way to recharge your soul. Purchase your tickets in advance. Knowing that you are going to attend the ballet in three weeks gives you something delightful to look forward to." — Jennifer L. Scott in At Home with Madame Chic   Luck is Hard Earned 14. "In truth, her luck was not yet finished. Not even close. These two daring shipments were to make her one of the most famous women in Europe and her wine one of the most highly prized commodities of the nineteenth century. As Louis told her, it was a succes born out of 'your judicious manner of operating, your excellent wine, and the marvelous similarity of your ideas, which produced the most splendid unity and action and execution — we did it well, and I give a million thanks to the bounty of the divine Providence who saw fit to make me one of his instrument in your future well-being . . . certainly you merit all the glory possible after your misfortunes, your perseverance, and your obvious talents.'" —Tilar J. Mazzeo in The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It   On What Is Worth Appreciating and Savoring 15. "The weight of history means that the French don't wipe the slate clean to make way for progress the way Americans do. Because of their centuries-old attachment to the land, restriction is their second nature, not expansion. The French have completely different ideas about what's public and what's private, and those ideas influence how they think about money, morality, eating, manners, conversation, and even political accountability. The French glorify what's elevated and grand, not what's common and accessible. They value form as much as content. And finally, they created many of their instituions to try to deal with the after-affects of two major wars. These factors don't add up to a neat picture that diametrically opposes French and Anglo-Americans. They just explain a lot about why the French think the way they do. Unless Americans recognize these differences, they will never understand the French." —Jean-Benoît Nadeau & Julie Barlow in Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong: Why We Love France, but Not the French   Stop and Nourish Your Body & Mind Daily 16. "No matter how fraught our workload, we stop and have a proper meal. It helps us calm our brains and bodies, and we know we will work more efficiently afterward." —Mathilde Thomas in The French Beauty Solution: Time-Tested Secrets to Look and Feel Beautiful Inside and Out   The Importance of Quality Living for the Individual Living It, Not for Outward Applause 17. "Ambition—another virtue that becomes a vice when taken too seriously. Time is not money for the French. It's an ephemeral currency and should be spent doing the things that make life worth living. Remember, the French woman might have an acute sense of breveity of time and the immediacy of pleasure; that said, she also has a strong predilection to enjoy not only the finer things in life but the things that make life fine." —Debra Ollivier in What French Women Know: About Love, Sex and Other Matters of the Heart and Mind   Let Your Dreams Lead the Way and Never Stop Striving Forward 18. "Willa Carter believed that if you have a wish for something from a young age and you nourish it, if you continually make an effort to nurture this wish and stay connected to this dream, then you will live a fulfilled life. If you believe in something, it invests everything you do with meaning. Paris has always stayed with me, close to me, and I've continually felt nourished by it." —Kate Betts in My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine   At the core of living well is appreciating the value of now and tempering longings and future hopes so that we are soley living in the future. Our lives are indeed right now. Just for a moment, examine where you were in your life one year ago today, now five years ago, now 10. Few people know of one of the best modern houses in the United States, and even fewer have ever seen it. The designer of Richard Halliburton's house (1938) in Laguna Beach, William Alexander Levy, would never again produce such an exceptional building nor work for such an eccentric client. He met Paul Mooney in 1930 and the two men became lovers. By that time, Mooney had a prolific professional and personal relationship as editor and ghostwriter to Richard Halliburton, the world-traveling adventurer, who at the time was as famous as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. Alexander was only 27 years old when he received the commission for the Halliburton's house. Alexander drew upon European contemporary architecture and created flat-roofed boxes of concrete and glass in a clear expression of the International Style of modernism. He hoped to create a house that soared like the modern spirit of Halliburton. Mies van der Rohe's work and his experimental concrete buildings of the 1920s, along with Le Corbusier's L'Esprit Nouveau Pavilion (1924-25) and his famous Villa Savoye (1928-29) would influence Alexander. In 1936, the first major and well-publicized concrete dams, Hoover Dam and Grand Coulee Dam were built, securing concrete as a practical and modern material in the United States. Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander's teacher, had used concrete at the Larkin Building (1904) and Unity Temple (1905-07), but Wright most exploited its structural characteristics in the cantilevered concrete decks at Fallingwater (1936-37). At the Halliburton House, simple rectangular boxes of reinforced, poured-in-place concrete define the house. The boxes' two open sides facing the ocean and the canyon are filled with thin steel frames of industrial windows. Cantilevered concrete stairs wrap the exterior's southwest corner to the entry door. The interior contains a gallery, the living and dining rooms, a small kitchen, two bathrooms and three bedrooms one each for Halliburton, Mooney, and Alexander. The roof is a deck with unobstructed views in all directions. Mooney named it Hangover House because of the dramatic setting overlooking the canyon. The words are impressed into the concrete retaining wall near the entry. The three men were aware of the obvious pun. Later, Alexander assisted Arnold Schoenberg, the composer, with the redesign of Schoenberg's Brentwood studio. Alexander befriended Ayn Rand, and provided quotes for her book, The Fountainhead (1943). Some of Rand's descriptions in the book of the Heller House are thinly disguised references to the Halliburton House. Alexander continued to practice architecture and interior design and by 1950 had moved permanently to West Hollywood. He died in 1997. For more information see the book, Horizon Chasers: The Lives and Adventures of Richard Halliburton and Paul Mooney, by Gerry Max. It's the story of Halliburton, the quintessential world traveler of the 20th century and his gifted editor and ghost writer, Paul Mooney, with first hand accounts by William Alexander and others. The book is published by McFarland & Company, April 2007.
