The transfer of genuine energy is the basis of what makes any transaction feel good or fruitful. Whenever you come across a solid individual whose morals and values align with yours, you're more inclined to want to see that person win– and at a very high level. These are the exact sentiments we at CWTFB Radio feel for this rap artist out of Academy Homes in Roxbury, AK(CTCG)! AK is one of those guys who has been close to the likes of Jefe Replay, Vintage Lee, Cousin Stizz, and many other successful creatives from the city and many fans have been patiently waiting to see the "VS Everybody" rapper stand next to these names in any venue. What a lot of fans have said about AK have all been similar along the lines of "we want more work" and Charlie MaSheen & KASH did not shy away from giving him a hard time about it. While giving him his flowers, our hosts also aimed to use this opportunity to show the artist how much support the city is showing him and how he can build from the attention. AK pulls up to the pod with one of his label mates Keezie900 and had a very entertaining and transparent conversation. Join us as we talk about AK's plans for his career, what he feels is holding him back, the Boston music scene and SO MUCH MORE! On Episode 52 of the Night School series, Mike sits down with composer, producer, and artist Johan Lenox for a legendary conversation. Originally from Winchester, MA and growing up exclusively with a classical/orchestral music background, Johan has found himself deeply embedded in the mainstream hip-hop scene, working with the likes of artists such as Kanye West, John Legend, Big Sean, Travis Scott, BROCKHAMPTON, Saint JHN, Ty Dolla $ign, Vic Mensa, Snoh Aalegra, and so many more. Johan has started to put together an impressive catalog of solo music, and gets in depth with his experiences from both sides with Mike. Johan also discusses his early years learning to play piano and write sheet music, his recent recognition on Grammy Award winning music, new single "phases" with Cousin Stizz, and his upcoming album this summer titled 'What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?', and even shares moments of being in the studio with Nelly, and playing piano in front of Jay-Z & Beyonce. Mike & Johan also discuss the presence of a plethora of Massachusetts artists in LA, what Massachusetts has meant to him, and even the guys' favorite local restaurants and take-out food places. We meet with Boston native Cousin Stizz and his manager Tim Larew to discuss their upbringings, introduction to the music industry, how they first met, and the in’s and out’s of their journey releasing music both independently and on a major label.
This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal we welcome Boston's own Cousin Stizz to the Upper West Side! Stizz discusses the realities of growing up in Dorchester, the oldest of three children and the son of working class parents who wanted more for him then what they had, how he excelled in certain classes but didn't care for school, the pull of the darker corners outside, and the effect his best friend's death had on him before even reaching high school. Stizz talks his mother's line in the sand, what it was like to bus to the suburbs to a brand new school experience, listening to but not obsessing over music as a teen, and casually finding his way into rap cyphers, where more than anything he got a chance to show off his sense of humor. We break down his mom's driving him to an Army recruiter, his last-minute scheme to stay at home by becoming a producer, how that evolved into composing lyrics, recording his own songs, and keeping them all to himself, and the serendipitous moment where he left a dice game after a last minute invite to crash an open mic where he met up with a number of his contemporaries who'd go on to become his creative partners. Stizz talks about speaking on his circumstances where others hadn't before, the care he puts into perfecting his art, the thought that goes into his process, and what it's like to find out that Drake played your music at a party and broadcast it to the world on Instagram. We get into his meeting at Lyor Cohen's house, how labels came calling, why he ultimately chose to sign with RCA, what he discussed with Donald Glover while they got high, how both loss and success led to scrapping two full albums, what it's like to have Shea Serrano in your corner, why he still loves his city, that infamous Cuba Gooding, Jr. picture, whether a true Bostonian can ever wear a Yankees hat, the reality of Tom Brady getting older, and so much more! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode 55. We were pumped to have Replay swing through the show to chop it up about how much Boston has shifted since he initially started glowing up in the city. For those who don't know: Jefe Replay is an artist who was part of the 2015 wave which started really putting Boston on the map (with Cousin Stizz, Michael Christmas, and OG Swaggerdick). He was also part of Pilot Nation with our guy Nick Gray, and an original member of the 12 for 12 freestyles. He's from Orchard Park and just recently dropped a tape called, "Proper Finessements". Additionally, he was probably the first Boston Artist (besides Moufy), that I had ever heard of. We chopped it up about A LOT, including the division in Boston Music, his tape, the excitement of being one of the first dudes to come up out of the city; and transitioning from being hood into a political/business mindset. Great dude, hope everyone enjoys! Boston's first Son and everybody's favorite cousin, Cousin Stizz comes through to chop it up with us about everything under the sun for a solid 45 minutes before the icon OG Swaggerdick bursts in the studio for the final 15 minutes of the interview. After the break, Coley and Tyler discuss Giannis' historic run, when the Celtics win streak will end, Lonzo's second triple double, the MVP race a month in to the season, and whether or not Ben Simmons ever needs to learn how to shoot.
Episode 117 has us run through and review the latest music of the week including new records from Sevyn Streeter, Toro y Moi, Trouble, Cousin Stizz, and 21 Savage.
Episode 32: During his sophomore year at Boston University, Tim saw an opportunity to bridge the rest of the world with the Boston music scene. He had just seen one of his first shows, Wiz Khalifa at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge, MA. Tim always enjoyed writing growing up, had a good taste for music and recognized he could be part of the scene and not just a fan. A year and a half later after launching his blog, The Fresh Heir, he had written over 1,500+ articles, album reviews, reviews of shows he had attended, and more- all by himself- and was creating as much content as possible. All the while he was slowly beginning to build genuine relationships with people in the industry. He booked Chance The Rapper his very first show in the city (who is now headlining Boston Calling music festival in May!), he has played a role in creative direction and management for artists like Cam Meekins, Cousin Stizz, Michael Christmas and many more. One of the main reasons he has gotten to where he is today is because he has never chased the money, he’s only chased after what his passions have been. Tim elaborates on some of the biggest moments of his career to date-achievements like selling out Paradise Rock Club two weeks before the show and waking up to a text of a video of Drake on his birthday with the OVO crew bumping “Shoutout”, a Stizz record. We talk about planning for the long-run, letting relationships build naturally and organically, being patient and letting life take its course, not burning bridges, the perspective that luck is when preparation meets opportunity, and the idea of just starting something but being a student willing to study and learn. — Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) weekly: http://bit.ly/2zprpon Follow us on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2hcSBws Subscribe to iTunes: http://apple.co/2yE0u9l Follow us on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2j82AHF Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Ap24ce Twitter: http://bit.ly/2hj6Ljm
