A Biblical Exposition of Matthew 7:24–27 Our Lord concludes the Sermon on the Mount with a searching contrast: “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” —Matthew 7:24–27, KJV These verses are far more than a charming illustration or moral tale. They form the solemn, climactic warning of the entire Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7). After unfolding the character of true righteousness, the realities of kingdom life, the heart of prayer and giving, the dangers of anxiety and being judgmental, and the narrow way that leads to life, Jesus now presses every hearer to a decisive response.  The question is not merely “Have you heard?” but “Have you obeyed?”   The Context and the Force of “Therefore” Matthew 7:24–27 stands at the very end of Jesus' longest recorded discourse. Immediately preceding it are three paired contrasts that build to this point: The two gates and two ways (7:13–14)   The two trees and their fruit (7:15–20)   The two claims at the judgment (“Lord, Lord…”) versus doing the will of the Father (7:21–23)   In 7:21–23, Jesus warns that many will claim His lordship with impressive religious activity yet be rejected as “workers of lawlessness” (anomia — lawlessness, rebellion against God's revealed will).    The “therefore” (Greek: οὖν — oun) is not a casual transition. It draws the inescapable conclusion from everything that has gone before.  It means, “In light of all I have said — the radical demands of the kingdom, the necessity of fruit, the danger of false profession — this is how you must respond.” The entire Sermon on the Mount is not optional religious advice. It is the authoritative teaching of the King. The “therefore” demands that every listener move from hearing to doing.   Hearing and Doing: The Great Divide “whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them…” The Greek is emphatic: πᾶς οὖν ὅστις ἀκούει … καὶ ποιεῖ αὐτούς (pas oun hostis akouei … kai poiei autous). ἀκούει (akouei) — “hears.” This is not mere a question of hearing. In biblical usage, akouō often carries the idea of hearing with understanding and attention that calls for response. Jesus is addressing those who have sat under His teaching, who have been exposed to the light of the kingdom. ποιεῖ (poiei) — “doeth.” From the verb ποιέω (poieō), meaning to do, to perform, to practice, to produce.  It is in the present tense, suggesting ongoing, habitual action— MAKE IT A HABIT! — a lifestyle of obedience, not occasional compliance. This is the same word used in 7:21 (“he that doeth the will of my Father”).   Both the wise and foolish man hear. The difference is not access to truth but response to truth.  James echoes this exactly: “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). Hearing without doing produces self-deception — the most dangerous spiritual condition. Examine your life honestly. Do you read Scripture, listen to sermons, or discuss doctrine — yet continue in known sin, neglect known duty, or live as though Christ's words are suggestions rather than commands?    The difference between information and transformation is obedience.   The Wise Builder and the Rock “…I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock…”   The Greek for “wise” is φρόνιμος (phronimos). It does not mean merely clever or intellectually sharp.    It describes one who is prudent, thoughtful, far-sighted, and practically wise — someone who thinks ahead and acts accordingly.    It comes from the root idea of the phrēn (the mind or seat of thought). The wise man counts the cost and builds for permanence.   He builds “upon a rock” — πέτραν (petran). This is not a small stone (petros) or a loose rock, but a massive outcropping of bedrock — solid, immovable, able to bear the full weight of the house through every season. In the immediate context, this rock is “these sayings of mine” — Christ's own words.    More deeply, it is Christ Himself as the divine authority and foundation (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:4; Psalm 18:2).   The wise builder does not begin with appearance, speed, or convenience. He begins with stability. He digs deep (as Luke's parallel emphasizes in Luke 6:48) until he reaches the unshakeable foundation.   Practical application: Building on the rock means ordering your entire life — marriage, finances, speech, relationships, ambitions, suffering — according to the concrete teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. When He says forgive, you forgive. When He says love your enemies, you seek their good. When He warns against anxiety, you trust the Father.  This is not legalism; it is the fruit of genuine faith in the One who both commands and enables obedience.   The Foolish Builder and the Sand “…shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand…”   The Greek for “foolish” is μωρός (mōros) — from which we get “moron.” It means dull, senseless, morally and spiritually stupid.    It is the opposite of phronimos. The fool is not necessarily ignorant; he is one who acts as though God will not judge, as though words may be heard without being heeded, and as though life can be built on shifting ground.   He builds “upon the sand” — ἄμμῳ (ammō). Sand is loose, shifting, and unable to bear weight under pressure. In the Jewish context Jesus' hearers knew well, this often meant building quickly and cheaply near a dry riverbed (wadi).  In fair weather it seemed convenient; when the rains came, the sand would be washed away in sudden, violent flash floods.   The sand represents any foundation other than obedience to Christ: outward religion without inward reality, emotional experiences without repentance, self-made morality, reputation, wealth, tradition, or feelings. All of these may look solid until tested. Practical application: Many today build on the sand of “I believe in Jesus” without submission to His lordship, or on church attendance and moral respectability without the transforming power of the gospel. Ask yourself: If every external support were removed — health, reputation, comfort, approval of others — what would remain?   The Storms Are Inevitable — and Revealing   Both houses face the identical storm: “the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house.”   In the land of Israel, storms could be sudden and catastrophic.  Torrential rains would turn dry riverbeds into raging torrents within minutes. Winds would lash the structures. The same forces struck both houses. Obedience does not exempt the believer from trials; it determines whether he stands when they come.   These storms picture: The ordinary trials of life (suffering, loss, temptation, persecution).   The providential testings of God that expose the heart.   Ultimately, the final judgment for believers, when every life is tested by divine fire (TURN 1 Corinthians 3:13–15). The storm does not create the foundation — it reveals it. The Contrast in the End   The wise man's house “fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” It stands because its foundation was secure from the beginning. The foolish man's house “fell: and great was the fall of it.” The Greek πτῶσις (ptōsis) means collapse or ruin.    The word “great” (megalē) emphasizes the total, devastating nature of the destruction. All the labor, time, and hope invested in the house are lost in one catastrophic moment.     Practical application: A life of religious profession without obedience may appear impressive for years. But when the storm comes — whether in this life or at the judgment seat of Christ — the collapse will be total and terrible. There is no partial ruin when the foundation is wrong.       Christ's Supreme Authority   Notice the personal claim: “these sayings of mine.” Jesus does not point to Moses, the prophets, or tradition as the ultimate standard. He places His own words at the center. This is an astonishing assertion of divine authority.    The final question of every life is not “Did you hear?” but “Did you do what I said?”         Gospel Comfort and Urgent Invitation   This passage is both warning and mercy. Christ does not leave us without hope. The Rock is available.  The same Lord who demands obedience also provides the grace to obey through the new birth and the indwelling Spirit. To build on the rock is to come to Christ in repentant faith, to trust Him as Savior and submit to Him as Lord, and then — by His grace — to walk in obedience to His word. Hearing + doing is the evidence of genuine saving faith, not the ground of it.   Conclusion Matthew 7:24–27 teaches that the final test of discipleship is obedience to the words of Christ. Both the wise and the foolish hear.      The difference is what they do with what they hear. Storms will come to every life. Only the house built on the rock — the solid, unmovable foundation of Christ and His authoritative teaching — will stand.   Therefore, examine yourself today. Are you building on the rock or on the sand? The wise man builds for eternity. The foolish man builds for the moment. May God grant us grace to be wise builders — those who not only hear the sayings of Jesus but do them, to the glory of His name.      Christ is that Rock. His word is sure. His house shall stand forever.

Welcome to Episode #210 of the Way of the Bible podcast. This is our second of eight episodes in our Twenty-Seventh mini-series entitled Response to Sermon on the Mount. In our last mini-series, we overviewed Matthew 7:24-27. In this overview, I pointed out how Jesus was saying something much greater than what appears on the surface. Of course, I could say this about any passage in the Bible, any word in the Bible, any Letter and even any space between the letters. While men and women have attempted to plumb the depths of what is hidden in the Scriptures, I can say without hesitation that no one has yet even scratched the surface of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge it contains. I doubt even the most powerful AI we could ever conceive would melt down long before the contents were fully revealed.All that to say, on this episode we also will only be scratching the surface as we look at the rock mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 7:24. Let's read the entire massage for context. Matthew 7:24-27 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”We got into this a little on our last episode when I read Paul speaking of the foundation of our faith in 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 – You are God's field, God's building. 10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.Each of us are building a house, God's temple, where the Holy Spirit indwells us. Once we are reborn by the Holy Spirit, he will never leave us. Our life now and into eternity will be by empowered by the Holy Spirit. We are now and forever experiencing eternal life. Although now still residing in a body of death, at God's time and choosing, he will take us from our bodies and bring us to paradise until we receive our resurrection bodies at the return of Christ. When thinking about this, being with Jesus rather than remaining in the body, Paul noted in Philippians 1:23-24 – I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.Paul notes our bodies being the temple of God also in 2 Corinthians 6:16 – For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.Peter also mentions Jesus as a living stone and we as living stones, each in spiritual houses of God. We'll see this stone imagery later in this episode. 1 Peter 2:4-6 – As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” This is a good time to repeat Matthew 7:24-25 – “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.Our foundation is Jesus Christ and him crucified for our sins/trespasses, raised from the dead for our justification, and ascended to the right hand of God in heaven. In 1 & 2 Corinthians, Paul says the house we're building is the temple of God. Peter, in 1 Peter 2,  says we are building a spiritual house and that we are a holy priesthood. John writes of Spirit Baptized believers in Revelation 1:5-6 – To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Matthew 16:13–20 Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ [13] Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” [14] And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” [15] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” [16] Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [17] And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [19] I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” [20] Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
