When Jesus told the story of the two types of builder, and said that the wise man builds on rock (Matthew 7:24-27), He was setting the scene for His promise that He would build His House (the church) on Rock (Matthew 16:18) - a solid, secure and unshakeable foundation. So what does that mean for us in practical terms today? How is the church to be built? What are the essential foundations? And how can we play our part in what's being built?…

“Founded on the Rock” Matthew 7:24-29 January 19, 2025 Pastor Tony Felich Sermon Application [file] ----more---- Matthew 7:24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. [25] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. [26] And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. [27] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it. [28] And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, [29] for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. Blessed is the person who builds their life upon the Rock, who is Jesus Christ. • The foolish way to build your life (26-27) • The wise way to build your life (24-25, 28-29)
In Week 1 of the "Jesus' Church" series, we dive into Matthew 16:13-19 to uncover the foundation of the Church that Jesus is building. Jesus declares Peter's confession of faith as the rock upon which He will build His Church, with a promise that even the gates of hell will not prevail against it. Through passages like 1 Peter 2:4-5 and John 2:19, we see how the Church is not just a building but a living, spiritual house made up of people transformed by God. This message challenges us to reflect on our role in Jesus' Church and the significance of being part of His unstoppable plan for redemption. For more information about Integrity Church, visit our website, http://liveintegritychurch.org Connect with us on social media throughout the week to stay up to date on events and things happening at Integrity! “In applying [the Sermon on the Mount] to ourselves, we need to consider that the Bible is a dangerous book to read, and that the Church is a dangerous society to join. For in reading the Bible, we hear the words of Christ, and in joining the church, we say, we believe in Christ. As a result, we belong to the company described by Jesus as both hearing his teaching and calling him Lord. Our membership therefore lays upon us the serious responsibility of ensuring that what we know and what we say is translated into what we do.”— John Stott Matthew 7:24-27

In Matthew 7:24-27, we find a contrast between the wise man who builds his house on the rock and the foolish man who builds his house on the sand. The foundation on which we build our lives is critical when the storms of life come. The wise man hears and practices the words of Jesus, building his house on the Rock, which is immovable. In contrast, the foolish man hears but does not practice the words of Jesus, building his house on sand, which is unstable, and in the end, he will fall. Matthew 7:24-27: 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Head over to ThankfulHomemaker.com for full show notes. Matthew 16:13–20 Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ [13] Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” [14] And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” [15] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” [16] Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [17] And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [19] I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” [20] Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. The church is established upon the foundation of Christ, and has been charged as the gatekeepers of the kingdom of God. We cannot bypass the cross for the crown, any more than Jesus did.
What do people say about you? Do people know the real you? Jesus had the same issue, people said all sorts of crazy stuff about Him too. Today we hear what Peter says about Jesus (and Jesus says Peter's faith came straight from God). Jesus is the Christ, the Savior and that's what the Church is all about. Recorded live at Word of Life Church in Le Sueur, Minnesota on September 25, 2022, Pastor Jason Lang preaching.
"But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand" Matt 7:26. In these times of uncertainty, it is easy to lose hope and sight of the future when the foundation of your life is not on solid principles. Many times throughout the bible God is said to be "the rock on which we stand", which means we are centering our whole life on who he is. Join us as Pastor David dives into scripture throughout the bible solidifying the concept of Christ being our cornerstone.
