Despite its characteristics as a clean energy source, nuclear energy has not been a priority in the energy transition to date. Countries like Germany have shut down their last nuclear plants despite of the loss of pipeline natural gas from Russia and the US has been on a similar path with the Palisades and Diablo Canyon power plant closure decision as an example. You mention nuclear power and most people think of nuclear accidents like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima Daiichi. But despite those high-profile safety accidents, nuclear energy maybe seeing a comeback. A new plant has opened at Vogtle in Burke County, near Waynesboro, Georgia. The first nuclear power plant in the Middle East has opened in the UAE and a fourth-generation plant opened in 2023 at the Shidaowan plant in China's northern Shandong province. Add to these events, talk of small modular reactors and growing interest in nuclear plants to power the new AI data centers and maybe the idea of a comeback is not so crazy. A multibillion-dollar rainstorm has completely transformed the land market across Western North Dakota and surrounding regions. After months of drought conditions had operators questioning whether there would be enough grass for the season, recent rainfall measuring 2-10 inches has saturated the soil, filled dugouts, and created a wave of optimism that's driving strong prices for both grassland and cropland.The results from recent auctions tell the story vividly. A 3,076-acre ranch in Golden Valley County drew 52 serious bidders, with cropland parcels bringing $2,375 per acre and the ranch headquarters selling for $1,750 per acre. "December 23, 1981. Burke County, North Carolina. After leaving an office Christmas party, 19-year old Rhonda Hinson begins her drive home, but her car is soon discovered in a ditch on Mineral Springs Mountain Road about a half-mile from her residence. Rhonda's body is lying outside the vehicle and it turns out she was fatally shot by someone who fired a bullet which passed through the car's trunk and the driver's seat before it penetrated her heart. An eyewitness reports having seen an unidentified man near the vehicle's driver's side door shortly before Rhonda's body was discovered, but he cannot be identified. Years later, new information surfaces to suggest that Rhonda's death may have been caused by someone from her personal life, but the crime is never solved. Thousands of acres of burning in North Carolina and South Carolina this weekend are due to extremely high fire danger.The largest fires are in Polk County, North Carolina, where firefighters are battling the Black Cobve, Deep Woods and Fish Hook fires. Combined over 3,000 acres have burned and nearby residents have been evacuated to a shelter in Columbus.Fires are burned Saturday in Table Rock, South Carolina and Burke County, North Carolina.A Norfolk Southern freight train started a small grass fire in Huntersville, North Carolina.The weather forecast remains dry and sunny. Combined with leftover storm debris from Helene and ongoing gusty winds, state officials in both North Carolina and South Carolina have issued statewide burn bans.James Brierton provides this update on the ongoing wildfires from the Carolina Weather Group studio in Charlotte.
