MDJ Script/ Top Stories for July20th Thursday Publish Date: July 19 Wednesday   Commercial: Henssler :15   From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast Today is Tuesday July 20th and happy 76th birthday to guitarist Carlos Santana ***Santana*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia 1. Alabama man gets 10 years in prison for trafficking 55 grams of cocaine 2. Unlicensed minor crashes into utility pole that injures one and causes power outage in Marietta 3. And Cobb prosecutor of Arbery's murderers named Prosecutor of the Year Plus, Leah McGrath of Ingles Markets is here to talk about sugar substitutes, and Brian Giffin has our weekly Marietta Food Guy segment. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Commercial : CUofGA   STORY 1: busted   A man from Dothan, Alabama, named Timothy Obrien Crews, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for trafficking cocaine, as announced by Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr.'s office. Crews pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including trafficking cocaine, possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The arrest occurred on October 8, 2020, when Cobb police responded to a report of a suspicious person at the Lakemont Campground. Officers discovered a large package of suspected controlled substances protruding from Crews' pants. The substances were identified as 55 grams of cocaine, around three grams of methamphetamine, and 585 pills of oxycodone. Assistant District Attorney Amanda Buxton handled the prosecution, while attorney Robert Alexander represented Crews during the plea.................……... Read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: unlicensed   In Marietta, an unlicensed minor was involved in a crash early Monday morning that caused power outages and sent one person to the hospital. The incident occurred when a 2018 Cadillac Escalade traveling eastbound on Blanche Court lost control and crashed into a utility pole, causing a fire and affecting multiple homes' power supply. One occupant of the vehicle was transported to Children's Hospital of Atlanta for injuries. The driver, who was unlicensed, received traffic tickets for driving without a license and reckless driving. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Marietta Police Department.   Story 3: arbery   Linda Dunikoski, a senior assistant district attorney in Cobb County, Georgia, has been honored with the Prosecutor of the Year award by the District Attorneys' Association of Georgia. Dunikoski was recognized for her 21 years of service and her role as the lead prosecutor in the Ahmaud Arbery case. She expressed gratitude for the support of Cobb DA Flynn Broady and the trial team. The case gained significant attention and scrutiny, with the trial being closely watched worldwide. Broady commended Dunikoski and the team for their dedication to justice and for restoring the legitimacy of the justice system. Dunikoski currently serves as the managing attorney of the Appeals Division in the Cobb District Attorney's Office. The award was presented at the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia's summer conference.   we'll be right back   Break: ESOG - Dayco – Ingles 10   STORY 4: justice   The city of Mableton has hired former Chief Justice Harold Melton to defend itself in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the legislation that allowed the city's formation. The suit, filed by Mableton residents, argues that House Bill 839, which created the city, violates the state constitution's single subject rule by creating both the city and community improvement districts in the same act. The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment to void the bill and the city. Melton, along with attorney Michael Foo, will represent Mableton in the case. The city will pay Melton $750 per hour for his services. The lawsuit poses a significant threat to the existence of Mableton as a city.   STORY 5: cupid   The Cobb Board of Commissioners has rejected a proposal for a church on a residential street in Mableton, Georgia. The vote was 4-1 against the request, with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid being the sole dissenting vote. The request from Aguas Vivas Centro Familiar de Adoracion initially sought a 10,000-square-foot building, but the Planning Commission stipulated it should not exceed 5,000 square feet. The church representatives brought a 6,800-square-foot proposal to the commission, arguing that the smaller size would not meet their needs. Opposition to the church primarily came from the Mableton Improvement Coalition, citing concerns about traffic and noise in a residential area. The board rejected the application due to the mismatch with the land use category and concerns about future expansion.   Story 6: engram   The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached a three-year contract agreement with tight end Evan Engram, who was franchise-tagged by the team. The financial details were not disclosed, but it is reported to be a $41.25 million deal with $24 million fully guaranteed. Engram, a Hillgrove High Alum, who would have earned $11.345 million on the franchise tag, had a productive season in 2022 with 73 catches for 766 yards and four touchdowns. He previously played for the New York Giants and has recorded 335 receptions for 3,594 yards and 20 touchdowns in his career. Three players remain on franchise tags: Saquon Barkley, Tony Pollard, and Josh Jacobs.   Break: Drake- Elon- UMC 30   Story 7: author   And Now, Leah McGrath, corporate dietician at Ingles Markets talked with Bruce Jenkins about sugar substitutes ***LEAH***   Now Brian Giffin has our Weekly Marietta Food guy feature   ***Food Guy***   We're back with final thoughts after this     Break: G.O.N :30. - Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Alzheimer’s drug gets FDA panel’s backing, setting the stage for broader use

Health advisers unanimously backed the full approval of a closely watched Alzheimer's drug, a key step toward opening insurance coverage to U.S. seniors with early stages of the brain-robbing disease. The drug, Leqembi, received conditional approval from the Food and Drug Administration in January based on early results suggesting it could slow Alzheimer's progression by several months. The FDA now is reviewing more definitive results to decide whether the drug should receive the agency's full endorsement. The decision carries extra significance because insurers have held off on paying for the infused treatment until it has full FDA approval. The FDA panel of outside advisers voted 6-0 that a large company study confirmed the drug's benefits for patients with mild or early Alzheimer's. The nonbinding vote amounts to a recommendation for full approval, and the FDA is scheduled to issue a final decision on the matter. The FDA's initial OK for Leqembi came via the agency's accelerated approval program, which allows early access to drugs based on laboratory or biological measures suggesting that they might help patients. The drug, marketed by Eisai and Biogen, helped clear a brain plaque that is a hallmark of Alzheimer's. The FDA panel reviewed more recent data from a 1,800-patient study in which people taking the drug showed a modestly slower rate of decline on measures of memory, judgment and other cognitive tests. Drugs approved via the accelerated pathway can technically be withdrawn by the FDA if their benefits aren't confirmed, though regulators rarely take that step. Gaining full approval allows medications to stay on the market indefinitely. Leqembi is the first drug that's been convincingly shown to slow Alzheimer's by targeting the underlying biology of the disease. The delay in progression amounts to about five months, and some experts disagree on whether that difference is enough to meaningfully improve people's lives. But most FDA panelists were impressed by Eisai's results, which they said showed significant differences in patients' cognitive abilities and functionality, as well as a reduced burden for caregivers. “There are adverse effects,” said Dr. Robert Alexander of the University of Arizona, who chaired the panel. “But they're monitorable and I think the benefit is clear.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

In this episode you will hear:   (16:20) Mark and Julia discuss a June 6th article in Forbes by Brennan Barnard entitled, “College admissions, who knows what”. This is the   of this three-part series examined the issues around transparency in college admission. Mark and Julia will discuss all three of these articles for three consecutive months       (36:20) For our question from a listener, comes from Nina from Massachusetts and she wants to know:   My son has played the trumpet since the 4th grade and when we started high school he made the decision that he wanted to stay in Concert Band which I fully support. Because band meets 4x per week it limits him in his ability to take other courses. For example, our high school offers an engineering certificate if you complete certain courses. Because of his choice to stay in band, he's not able to take many electives and has to choose among those that will fit with his other core classes. Is this something we need to explain to schools?     (01:13:00) Our interview is with Dr. Robert Alexander, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and Enrollment Management. In Part 1 of 2, Mark and Dr. Alexander discuss the following: Introduction and Greetings Robert, give us your backstory, walk us up to various admission roles you have had and what you are doing today? Robert, take 3-5 minutes to explain UR to someone who knows nothing about UR? Describe a student who thrives at UR? How “open” is UR's open curriculum?  What are some unusual ways that students take advantage of it? What is the university's relationship with Medical Center complex? Are undergrads involved?   The University of Rochester interview will also serve as our college spotlight.    (01:20:35) The recommended resource is “Breaking Ranks” How the Rankings Industry Rules Higher Education and what to do about it” by Colin Driver, President of Reed College   .
